Brewers to Place Closer Trevor Megill on Injured List

The Milwaukee Brewers are placing closer Trevor Megill on the 15-day injured list with a flexor strain in his right throwing arm, according to a report from ESPN's Jeff Passan.

The September injury to Megill is a critical blow to Milwaukee's bullpen, just weeks away from the start of the postseason.

The good news for the Brewers is that it is a low-grade strain for Megill, but it will take him some time to get back to full health, putting his availability—especially early in the postseason—in question.

Megill is 5-3 with a 2.54 ERA and 30 saves in 49 relief appearances this season for Milwaukee. He was named to his first All-Star team last month.

The Brewers hold the best record in baseball at 83-50 entering Wednesday's action and hold a 6.5-game lead in the NL Central over the Chicago Cubs.

Not just Grealish: £30k-p/w Everton gem can be England's World Cup wildcard

No player in the Premier League this season has directly contributed toward a greater proportion of their team’s goal involvements than Everton’s Jack Grealish.

The 30-year-old has resurrected his career. Plainly, had the silky playmaker left Manchester City for a bumper payday in the Saudi Pro League this summer, few would have been surprised, but his passion for success still burns strong, and he has charged David Moyes’ side so far this term.

He claimed the Premier League Player of the Month award for August after racking up some early assists, and has reminded English football of his elite quality.

But still the winger has been overlooked by England boss Thomas Tuchel. In fact, there are a range of Toffees players who would fancy a shot at the Three Lions squad ahead of the 2026 World Cup in the United States.

The Everton stars being overlooked by Tuchel

Toward the end of the 2024/25 campaign, Jarrad Branthwaite was playing out of his skin, instrumental in the early revival after Moyes replaced Sean Dyche.

Injury has now further reduced the defender’s prospects, but there are others of an Everton persuasion who will be angling toward a place on the plane.

At the forefront, Grealish aside, would be Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, who completed a £27m transfer to the Hill Dickinson from Chelsea this summer and has swiftly nailed down a starting berth.

He has been the complete player in the middle, threading things together, and has this week expressed his desire to continue working toward a senior cap with his home country, rather than taking advantage of international ties with the Republic of Ireland.

Hailed as “one of England’s most exciting young players” by journalist Harry Watkinson, Tyler Dibling might also hope for more opportunities on Merseyside to prove he has what it takes to thrive on the international stage.

This one might come too soon for the 19-year-old, but there’s a more mature teammate at Everton who has been overlooked, and who might actually prove a shrewd wildcard pick for Tuchel.

Everton man could be England's wildcard pick

Jordan Pickford is a stalwart for his nation, unflappable between the sticks. The aforementioned players all have the quality to star over the pond next year, too, but competition will be thick.

Someone we haven’t mentioned, though, is James Garner, who might seem like a left-field pick but is a hard-working and dynamic player who has been given Moyes’ endorsement.

The 24-year-old has become an ever more important player for the Blues this year, playing every minute of the Premier League campaign so far.

Last month, Moyes hinted that he believes the intelligent, tempo-controlling midfielder has what it takes to weasel his way in, saying, “If I was on the England staff, Jimmy Garner would definitely be in my thoughts.”

Not only can he cover multiple positions, but Garner is also a selfless player, hailed for his “relentless” approach to the midfield game by one prominent Everton fan in the past.

In the Premier League this season, he has averaged 2.9 tackles per game while completing 88% of his passes and winning 57% of his ground duels.

The £30k-per-week talent would be an underrated cog in the machine, the kind needed to make it all tick.

Garner earned 18 caps for England U21s and has worked hard as one of Everton’s most industrious players under Dyche and now Moyes’ management.

Be it in the middle of the park or in a makeshift role out wide, he will serve dutifully, and this is the kind of player the Three Lions need to weave amongst the superstars, balancing out a side fit to challenge for that elusive golden trophy.

Moyes has a bigger talent than Richarlison in Everton's "creator of chaos"

Everton must keep a hold of this talented player for as long as they can.

Crushed Tarik Skubal Knew He'd Given Up a Game-Changing Grand Slam Before Anyone Else

Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal was cruising to what looked like another quality start and victory against the Athletics on Monday night before encountering some turbulence in the seventh inning. Holding onto a 3-2 lead, the fireballing lefty allowed the home team to load the bases without an out. While this would have been reason enough for a manager to relieve any other pitcher, Skubal has earned the right to work out of such jams. And it looked like he would after striking out two batters to set up a battle with Shea Langeliers.

Langeliers, one of the hottest hitters in all of baseball since the All-Star break, worked the count to 2-1 and got a fastball to his liking. No one in the ballpark knew that his swing would result in a grand slam sooner than Skubal.

His immediate reaction said it all.

If you have some time to sit through some raw footage from a fan in attendance, the alternate angle of all the joy leaving the reigning American League Cy Young winner is even more compelling. It's like Skubal was living four seconds in the future where the Athletics had a 6-3 lead and he absolutely did not care for it.

Detroit would lose, 8-3, reducing their lead over the Toronto Blue Jays for the AL's best record to half a game.

Vikramjit back in Netherlands squad for Bangladesh T20Is

Vikramjit Singh is one of three players poised to make a return into the Netherlands squad for their three-match T20I series against Bangladesh, to be held later this month. The left-handed opener wasn’t in the side during their T20 World Cup qualifiers at home, having last played in the tri-series in Glasgow in June.Apart from Vikramjit, there were call-ups for legspinner Shariz Ahmed and left-arm pacer Ben Fletcher, who also last played in the Glasgow tri-series. Shariz returns after his last international in Muscat last year.Left-arm quick Fred Klaassen and left-arm spinner Tim Pringle have also been included in the squad, with both having last appeared for Netherlands in the format in 2024.Netherlands will be without experienced allrounders Bas de Leede and Roelof van der Merwe, both having excelled with the ball during the World Cup qualifiers. Batter Michael Levitt misses out, as do Zach Lion-Cachet and Hidde Overdijk.Netherlands, however, have most of their squad members from the previous assignment. Captain Scott Edwards is their batting lynchpin, along with Max O’Dowd, who top-scored for Netherlands in the T20 World Cup qualifier.Pacer Kyle Klein, who took seven wickets in the qualifiers, is in the squad alongside Paul van Meekeren and Aryan Dutt. Shariz is also an interesting choice, if he can master the conditions in Sylhet, where the three T20Is will be played on August 30, and September 1 and 3.IN: Vikramjit Singh, Shariz Ahmed, Ben Fletcher, Fred Klaassen, Tim PringleOUT: Bas de Leede, Michael Levitt, Zach Lion-Cachet, Hidde Overdijk, Roelof van der MerweNetherlands squad: Scott Edwards (capt, wk), Noah Croes, Max O’Dowd, Vikramjit Singh, Teja Nidamanuru, Saqib Zulfiqar, Ryan Klein, Kyle Klein, Aryan Dutt, Paul van Meekeren, Shariz Ahmad, Ben Fletcher, Daniel Doram, Fred Klaassen, Tim Pringle

Ashes tracker: Weatherald makes a statement as Boland primes for Perth

Marnus Labuschagne’s early-season surge continued while legspinner Mitchell Swepson sent a reminder of his skills

Andrew McGlashan20-Oct-2025Victoria vs New South WalesA match of two significant storylines and plenty others of interest. Sam Konstas bounced back from a first-innings duck, where he again fell to Scott Boland, to make a well-constructed half-century the second time around. But just when something more substantial was in the offing, he chopped on against Todd Murphy during a period where the game turned back in Victoria’s favour.Related

Konstas’ second innings included a scoop over the slips for six off Boland alongside some nicely controlled batting. However, with just one round of Shield matches remaining before the Test squad is selected, it feels as though he is struggling to make the cut. “[Konstas] is a baby cricketer in terms of experience as a number of batters in the game are on both sides,” NSW coach Greg Shipperd said. “There’s a lot of learning to be done and he’s learned a couple of lessons today.”If Pat Cummins is ruled out of the first Test, there is little doubt Boland will slot straight in. He became Victoria’s match-winner when he claimed the last five wickets to transform unusually expensive figures. Boland wasn’t quite at his best but has tuned up nicely in the first two games of the season. If the Perth pitch is anything like the one for the ODI against India, he could be a mighty handful.Meanwhile, Nathan Lyon continued his build towards the Ashes with 31 overs in the match, although with games having been pace-bowler dominated it will be interesting to see whether he now wants all four Shield matches before the opening Test.Sean Abbott became the first player to be subbed out under Cricket Australia’s new trial when he split his webbing, but it shouldn’t impact his Ashes prospects. It wasn’t a great game for two experienced batters hoping for another chance in Test cricket. Kurtis Patterson made 5 and 1 while Marcus Harris fell for 4 and a hard-working 20. Fergus O’Neill did all he could to keep his name in the conversation of back-up quicks with 5 for 26 in the first innings.Back to his best: Marnus Labuschagne keeps churning out the runs•Getty ImagesSouth Australia vs QueenslandBarring injury, it’s impossible to see a world where Marnus Labuschagne isn’t playing the first Test. He piled up a supreme 159 at Adelaide Oval to make it four centuries across formats this season. However, the debate rumbles on about whether he will bat No. 3 or open.Speaking to during the first ODI, having been called up following Cameron Green’s injury, he insisted he was happy to bat anywhere, but did note that first drop had been his spot.”It’s always nice when you’re scoring runs,” Labuschagne said. “You probably walk a bit taller, you’ve got that confidence, and it’s probably a nice reminder for yourself after struggling for a couple of years that you’ve still got it. It doesn’t matter how good you are or how many runs you’ve scored, when you don’t score runs for a while, those doubts creep in.”Usman Khawaja played neatly for 46 in the first innings before falling cheaply in the second. He may play one more game before the first Test, where all eyes will be on how he starts the series. Michael Neser, meanwhile, put in another big shift to suggest he’s well placed to provide support if the attack requires it.Mitchell Swepson has drifted down the spin pecking order in the last couple of years, but he bowled superbly to suggest he could still play a role when conditions allow. He barely put a foot wrong across 60 overs of expertly controlled legspin to finish with a career-best 10 for 159 in the match. Spin has played a major part in the two games at Adelaide Oval, which will be a day Test this year.Alex Carey, who played this round of Shield cricket ahead of the first ODI against India, picked out mid-off cheaply in the first innings but looked in decent order when making 43 in the second, although his dismissal early on the final day all but ensured Queensland’s victory. Jason Sangha, who has been back in the Australia A mix, made twin fifties but will need hundreds to bang the door down. Nathan McSweeney will rue not building on two starts.Jake Weatherald’s aggressive 94 was a timely performance•Getty ImagesTasmania vs Western AustraliaOne of the great Shield games could have included one of the more significant early-season performances. Jake Weatherald made 94 off 99 balls in conditions where runs were hard to come by. It was the sort of momentum-seizing innings that will certainly have been noted. One of the debates around Australia’s opening combination is what style of player partners Khawaja.”I was really impressed with Jake’s innings in Tassie this week,” chair of selectors George Bailey said. “Again, it was reasonably low-scoring in that first innings and I just thought the method and the decisiveness around the way he wanted to play and then the execution of that was really pleasing.”There could be a huge game ahead for Weatherald in the next round when Tasmania face Victoria at Junction Oval. That match should also see the return of Beau Webster from an ankle injury. The Hobart thriller did not include much else of immediate Ashes relevance. Matt Kelly is the early leader of the pack among the bowlers with 16 wickets at 12.37 but will likely be one of those players who fall short of higher honours.

Red Sox Hall of Famer Mike Greenwell Dies at 62

Mike Greenwell, the former Red Sox left fielder and franchise Hall of Famer, has died at the age of 62, it was announced Thursday. His death comes only months after he revealed his medullary thyroid cancer diagnosis in August.

In a message on Facebook, his wife, Tracy, said Greenwell died at 10:30 a.m. in Boston's General Hospital, per WINK-TV, a CBS affiliate in Southwest Florida.

“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Commissioner Mike Greenwell, a lifelong Lee County resident,” said officials from Lee County, Fla., where Greenwell served as county commissioner, in a post on social media. “He was a strong advocate for the people and businesses of Lee County and will be remembered for seeking meaningful solutions to the challenges his community faced. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and all who were touched by his leadership.”

"We are deeply saddened by the passing of Red Sox Hall of Famer Mike Greenwell," added the Red Sox in a statement of the team's own. "'The Gator' spent his entire career in a Red Sox uniform and was a beloved fixture of Fenway and Fort Myers. He gave so much to Lee County and Sox Nation. We send our love to the Greenwell family."

Greenwell, a two-time All-Star and 1988 AL MVP runner-up, was selected in the third round of the 1982 MLB draft and played from 1985 to '96. Over his 12 seasons in the league, he recorded a career batting average of 0.303 with an OPS of 0.831.

In 2022, he was appointed to Lee County commissioner following the death of then-commissioner Franklin Mann, and was re-elected in 2024.

Cubs Pick Up Veteran Carlos Santana Days After Guardians Release

The Cubs signed veteran first baseman Carlos Santana on Sunday, 's Jon Heyman was the first to report. This comes days after the Guardians released Santana in a "joint decision" between the two sides, the Associated Press reported on Thursday.

Santana wanted the ability to compete for a playoff contender once he was released from Cleveland. And, well, Chicago is definitely that.

With a 78-58 record, the Cubs hold the top wild-card spot in the National League as of Sunday morning. They have the MLB's best Brewers (85-52) leading the NL Central to deal with. But, unless something catastrophically goes wrong in September for Chicago, the Cubs will be in the postseason for the first time since 2020.

The 39-year-old was in his third stint with the Guardians after signing a one-year deal back in December. Through 116 games this season, Santana is averaging .225/.316/.333 with 89 hits, 49 runs, 52 RBIs and 11 home runs. While it's not his best year by any means, he's put up impressive numbers for his age and for this point of his MLB career.

It's unknown what kind of role the Cubs will put Santana in when he arrives in Chicago. The Cubs have Michael Busch competing at first base right now, who's having his career-best season.

Siraj returns fresher, sharper and hungrier after Champions Trophy snub

The exclusion hurt him, but it gave him a break that he perhaps needed after two years of carrying an intense workload. Now he’s back, and back to his best

Sidharth Monga06-Apr-20251:31

Rayudu: Siraj’s comeback since India omission has been amazing

Mohammed Siraj had been doing well for India in both limited-overs formats for some time when he was left out of their squad for the Champions Trophy. Even in Jasprit Bumrah’s absence, Siraj didn’t find a place in the 15-man squad. India wanted a left-arm quick, a tall, into-the-pitch bowler, and the expected conditions put a premium on the extra spinner. There was only one spot left for the traditional seam bowler, which went to Mohammed Shami, who was returning from injury.India were looking for someone who could run through a side when he got on a roll. Siraj had been doing this in 2023, but had gradually become a steady bowler since then. He didn’t have out-and-out bad days, but he didn’t run away with big hauls either. As any proud competitor, Siraj was upset by this exclusion coming hot on the heels of a release from his beloved IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).”To be honest, at the start, I couldn’t digest it,” Siraj said after his second straight Player-of-the-Match performance in IPL 2025, for Gujarat Titans (GT) against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). Put together international cricket and the IPL, and he won two in all of 2024. Now he has two in four days.Related

  • Rayudu: Sai Kishore 'as good as anybody' in the Indian team

  • Siraj, Gill and Washington hand Sunrisers fourth successive defeat

  • Vettori: 'We understand the ramifications of losing four in a row'

  • Nearly man Washington makes rare opportunity count

It will not quite be fair to call his exclusion a blessing in disguise, because there is no guarantee Siraj wouldn’t have done well in the Champions Trophy, but the break it gave him seems to have done him good. Through that break, Siraj followed the classic arc of struggling to come to terms with it before putting in the hard work to try and come back better.”I reached a point when I had to convince my mind that my cricket is not over,” Siraj said. “That I have bigger plans. Okay, this [Champions Trophy] was not in my destiny, but what can I do now? I got my mindset right, I worked on my fitness. I was playing non-stop, so I didn’t have time to reflect on what mistakes had crept into my game. So I worked on it. Now I am enjoying my bowling. The body is fresh, I am not overthinking, I am staying in the present.”It is important to remember that as Shami and Bumrah grappled with fitness issues, Siraj was the one constant in India’s team. He was perhaps denied the break that fast bowlers need to carry out running repairs. Since the start of 2023, only Ravindra Jadeja has bowled more overs for India than Siraj.Mohammed Siraj won his second Player of the Match award in a row•AFP/Getty ImagesNow Siraj already has more powerplay wickets in this IPL – six – than he managed in the entirety of the 2024 season. Again, just looking at wickets is neither accurate nor fair when it comes to T20. It’s his control that has been impressive. In this game – played on a slow and low pitch – Siraj bowled three straight overs in the powerplay. Only five deliveries went fuller than good length. Three of them were just a fact-finding mission in the first over.Once he knew there was no swing, Siraj bowled almost robotically to capitalise on the lack of pace in the pitch. There was no anxiety to go looking for wickets. The result was 11 dot balls to Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma, and both their wickets. With the old ball, Siraj drew a hint of reverse swing – he acknowledged the use of saliva to maintain the ball – which has been reinstated in this IPL – helped him pick up two more wickets at the death. In his last game, against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Siraj started the match with a sharp bouncer that nearly got Phil Salt out first ball. Only a handful of games in the 18 years of the IPL have started with a short ball bowled in anger. That Siraj was sharp enough from the get-go to bowl one with both venom and direction perhaps said something about his state of mind and body. There is perhaps a freshness to Siraj that makes a case for regular breaks. But now that Siraj finds himself on a roll, GT – and India? – won’t want to miss a thing.
