Rangers can finally send Dessers packing with move for "impressive" forward

Glasgow Rangers Premiership title hopes went up in flames on Boxing Day as they suffered their fourth league defeat of the season against St Mirren, conceding a late goal to lose 2-1.

If the pressure on Philippe Clement was easing up after several weeks of solid performances, then this defeat puts him right back at square one. Matches against Motherwell and Celtic are coming up over the next six days and more dropped points could see his position become untenable.

While thoughts are on these games, surely one eye is focused on the upcoming January transfer window, which gives the Ibrox side a chance to bolster their squad ahead of the second half of the season.

Much will depend on how much of a budget the manager will be handed once the winter window opens next week, and he might have to sell a couple of players in order to raise significant funds.

This could see several players leave Ibrox, with one current first team player already attracting interest ahead of January – Cyriel Dessers.

Why Rangers should finally sell Cyriel Dessers

Unfortunately, Rangers are now in a position where they have to sell players before thinking of making signings, such is the nature of their finances.

Hopefully, Clement is ruthless and moves on those who are either taking up a place in the squad that isn’t warranted, or earning a lavish wage which is not representative of their performances on the field.

This could see a host of players depart the club next month, but it is Dessers who is the one attracting the most attention as of late.

Before Christmas, news emerged from France that Saint-Étienne were showing a keen interest in the striker ahead of making a potential move for the player once the window finally opens.

This wasn’t the first time that the Nigerian international had drawn interest from elsewhere. During the summer transfer window, Cagliari were hoping to bring the forward to Serie A, but no move ever materialised.

Things might have been different if Clement had more centre-forwards in his squad, but with Danilo still recovering from a knee injury and Hamza Igamane still settling in at Ibrox, it was perhaps too risky to sell Dessers.

January could be the ideal time for the club to recoup what they paid for him 18 months ago, especially as he hasn’t been the first choice over the previous few weeks.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Across 28 games in all competitions for the Gers, Dessers has found the back of the net on 12 occasions, yet he has scored just three league goals since the start of September.

Recently, Danilo and Igamane have taken turns being deployed as the lone striker in Clement’s 4-2-3-1 system, meaning Dessers has had to settle for a place on the bench.

Additionally, the striker is also earning £27k-per-week, which places him among the highest earners at the club.

All of these factors should be taken into consideration with regard to his future. Is he contributing enough considering his high wage? The answer is no. Therefore, if a decent bid arrives, then the Light Blues should accept it.

This could free up funds for Clement to move for a player they have been linked with lately who is currently shining in South Africa…

Rangers' search for a striker

As reported by South African news outlet SNL24 (via the Scottish Sun), the Light Blues have been keeping a close eye on striker Iqraam Rayners, who currently plays for Mamelodi Sundowns.

“There has been an enquiry about Iqraam (Rayners) from Rangers of Scotland,” a source told SNL24.

“I don’t think there has been an offer from them at this stage. What I know is they have shown interest and they continue monitoring him.”

There is no information on how much Rangers would have to pay to bring the South African to Glasgow, but it appears he is doing everything right in order to earn a big move abroad.

If a move for Rayners is concrete, this could see Dessers finally packing in what would be a popular move among the supporters. That’s for sure.

How Iqraam Rayners compares to Cyriel Dessers

Rayners may be the same age as Dessers, but he is currently in the form of his life for his club side.

Across just 17 matches in all competitions, he has scored 13 goals while chipping in with an assist, a wonderful strike rate in front of goal, that’s for sure.

Indeed, throughout the entirety of 2024, he has notched 24 goals for two clubs, which has led writer Joshua Henricks to hail the player as “impressive” due to his goalscoring ability.

Domestically, Rayners averages 1.7 shots per game, has created one big chance while succeeding with 75% of his dribble attempts. Crucially, he has missed only one big chance, indicating that he is more clinical in front of goal than Dessers, who tends to miss a large number of chances.

The 29-year-old has also shone for his country throughout 2024, scoring four goals in ten games for South Africa, with two coming during qualification for the Africa Cup of Nations as the nation avoided defeat in their group.

This proves that he is able to star on the international stage, suggesting he may not be fazed by moving to Ibrox in January.

With Hamza Igamane making the move to Scotland from Africa earlier this year and adapting fairly well, hopes are high that Rayners, who has more experience than the young Rangers striker, could follow suit.

Hamza Igamane

Once again, finances could be the crux of any potential deal. If interest in Dessers is genuine, then securing a decent fee for the 29-year-old could certainly aid in Clement’s future transfer plans.

Will Rayners be included in this? Only time will tell, but the South African has proven his talents in front of goal throughout the calendar year.

Bangladesh need repeat of team effort to win South Africa series

Big picture

As well as they would be celebrating the landmark win in Centurion on Friday, Bangladesh will have their eyes on a bigger achievement on Sunday. Beating South Africa in South Africa for the first time was huge, but if they can do it again in Johannesburg, and in the process win the series, it will be a massive success.Bangladesh produced a spectacular team effort. There were contributions right through the line-up – with Yasir Ali making a proper name for himself and Taskin Ahmed not too far behind. One more performance like that and this team will make even bigger history.South Africa, meanwhile, have a lot to work on. Temba Bavuma couldn’t work out why his bowlers didn’t push home the advantage they had after 15 good overs first up. They also leaked a lot of wides and no-balls, and in the back end, some of them didn’t bowl quick enough. The batters also have to find better ways to score runs. They were tied down by the Bangladesh seamers in the first Powerplay and in an effort to break free they lost too many wickets to the spinners. Rassie van der Dussen and David Miller batted well, but couldn’t finish the job. Bavuma himself struggled to rotate strike, while Aiden Markram lean patch continues to be a cause for concern.

In the spotlight

David Miller landed punch after punch on the Bangladesh bowling attack towards the end of the first ODI, but an already out of control required run-rate and falling wickets at the other end meant his 79 off 57 went in vain. They had enough bases covered on Friday for Miller not to matter but Bangladesh will know it won’t always be the case. They’re going to need to find ways to stop the marauding left-hander.David Miller was the only South Africa batter who gave Bangladesh something to think about on Friday•AFP/Getty Images

Taskin Ahmed took 2 for 15 in his first spell in Centurion, before coming back to bowl two more tight spells, finishing with the big wicket of van der Dussen in his last over. He worried all the South African batters with his pace, movement and bounce. From looking almost clueless on his last tour to South Africa in 2017, Taskin is now a much improved, fitter fast bowler.

Team news

South Africa will consider bringing back Tabraiz Shamsi, especially if the Johannesburg pitch will provide a bit for the spinners.South Africa (probable): 1 Kyle Verreynne (wk), 2 Janneman Malan, 3 Temba Bavuma (capt), 4 Aiden Markram, 5 Rassie van der Dussen, 6 David Miller, 7 Andile Phehlukwayo, 8 Marco Jansen, 9 Kagiso Rabada, 10 Keshav Maharaj, 11 Lungi NgidiBangladesh are unlikely to change the playing XI that’s brought them three wins in the last four games.Bangladesh (probable): 1 Tamim Iqbal (capt), 2 Litton Das, 3 Shakib Al Hasan, 4 Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), 5 Yasir Ali, 6 Mahmudullah, 7 Afif Hossain, 8 Mehidy Hasan Miraz, 9 Taskin Ahmed, 10 Shoriful Islam, 11 Mustafizur Rahman

Pitch and conditions

Four 350-plus scores for the sides batting first in the last seven day matches at the Wanderers should tell you what to expect on Sunday. Weather is set to be dry.

Stats and trivia

  • Tamim and Litton put on 95 runs in 21.3 overs on Friday, which is a new Bangladesh record for both runs scored (previous best 46) and overs batted (previous best 11.1) by their openers in South Africa.
  • Lungi Ngidi’s 1 for 75 in Centurion is now the worst bowling figures by a South African bowler against Bangladesh

Quotes

“Sunday is a must-win game for us. We have to up our game in all the departments. It will look after the points that we require. There’s no guaranteed points going into the game just because you are playing Bangladesh. We need to play the cricket that we know we can.”

Celtic ready to test club’s £4m resolve for "exciting" Scottish sensation

Potentially getting one over on Old Firm rivals Rangers in the process, Celtic are now reportedly ready to test one club’s resolve over the £4m price tag of their young prospect.

Celtic transfer news

Brendan Rodgers’ side have enjoyed quite the campaign so far, sitting top of the Scottish Premiership and on course to win yet another league title, this time ahead of both Aberdeen and Rangers. What has been a welcome surprise for those in Glasgow, however, is how the Bhoys have impressed in the Champions League at times, most recently picking up an impressive victory over Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig.

That success could yet come at a cost though, with Nicolas Kuhn the latest name to be linked away from Celtic Park. The Scottish giants already lost one star to the Premier League last season when Matt O’Riley left for Brighton & Hove Albion last summer and will be desperate to avoid a repeat. On the incomings front, meanwhile, Rodgers could be in for some good news.

According to the Daily Mail, Celtic are now ready to test Motherwell’s £4m resolve in the race to sign Lennon Miller in 2025. The 18-year-old is one of the hottest prospects in Scotland, having started in all 11 Scottish Premiership games that his side have played so far this season. Now, both Celtic and Rangers are in pursuit of his signature.

Alas, the teenage midfielder won’t come cheap. Motherwell are seemingly looking to take full advantage of the talent that they have in their ranks by demanding a £4m fee to open the exit door. Whilst that price may close the door on Rangers amid their financial struggles, however, it may not be enough to turn Celtic away.

"Exciting" Miller is one to watch

At just 18 years old, Miller has earned the attention of Scottish football, scoring four goals and assisting a further three in just 18 appearances in all competitions this season, and could now reap the rewards as a result. A step up to the Scottish champions certainly makes sense if Miller is to stay in his home country at all amid such a rise. If Celtic can offer him the game time that a young player needs, then he should only continue to grow through such a move.

Unsurprisingly, the teenager has received plenty of praise in the last year, including from Motherwell boss Stuart Kettlewell, who said via The National: “I have not shied away from it, because of the nature of the person and the lad that he is, he is unquestionably one of the best, if not the best, talent that I have worked with.

“But not just from how you kick a football, how you behave and everything that you do. I just think he is a really exciting talent. If he was playing at one of the other clubs I would be waxing lyrical about him as well because I do get excited when you see really good footballers in Scotland.”

Cameron Green, Pat Cummins ignite under lights as Australia seal Ashes 4-0

England lose all ten wickets for 56 in final collapse after Mark Wood six-for raises hopes

Valkerie Baynes16-Jan-2022Australia’s seamers, sparked by an electric Cameron Green spell, ran through England to win the fifth and final Test in Hobart by 146 runs inside three days and seal the Ashes 4-0.Despite Mark Wood’s best efforts to keep his side in the contest with a six-wicket haul that contained England’s target to 271, the tourist were found sorely wanting as they lost 10 wickets for 56 runs in 22.5 overs.Rory Burns and Zak Crawley started the chase brightly enough, but once Green dismissed Burns on the stroke of tea, they collapsed to be all out for 124. Green finished with 3 for 21, while Scott Boland and Pat Cummins also took three wickets apiece in a dominant display by Australia.Wood did everything in his power to give England a chance with a relentless short-ball barrage that began with a vicious bouncer that removed Usman Khawaja, caught behind off the glove as he took evasive action late on the second evening, and which yielded five more wickets on Sunday to give him career-best figures of 6 for 37 as Australia were bundled out in their second innings for 155.That it fell to England’s brittle batting line-up to finish the job was beyond his control, although in keeping the target under the 300-mark which the tourists had failed to reach all series he gave a glimmer of hope. That their failure to even threaten came as no surprise at all rammed home the running theme of this Ashes. In truth, Wood had switched to a short-ball tactic earlier, after tea on the opening day, to snatch three first-innings wickets after toiling long and hard for no reward. His effort all series has been beyond question but so too has the feeling that he deserved a greater return. He finally got it.Related

Wood gets his rewards to give England victory shot

The curious case of Steven Smith

Going into this match, Wood had taken eight wickets at 37.62, but after his stellar display in Hobart he increased his haul to 17 at an average of 26.64.Wood’s extra pace and bounce did for nightwatchman Boland, who feathered a catch to wicketkeeper Sam Billings and first-innings centurion Travis Head, caught down the leg side. When he sucked Steve Smith into a hook which careered off the top edge to Dawid Malan at long leg, Wood had removed yet another dangerous Australian batter.Stuart Broad re-entered the attack with immediate effect, removing Green lbw on review for 23 before Wood sealed his five-wicket haul with the scalp of Mitchell Starc, caught by Ollie Pope at short leg. Wood almost had two in two when his next ball – a swift yorker – struck Cummins on the boot to be given out lbw, but Cummins had the decision overturned with replays showing the ball was missing off stump.Adding to the drama on a pulsating day, Alex Carey was the beneficiary of two technology-led decisions that saw him reprieved on 19 and 30. On the first occasion, Carey dragged a Chris Woakes delivery onto his stumps and began making his way off the field only to return when it was deemed that Woakes had over-stepped with replays showing no definitive images of any part of his foot behind the line. Carey then had an lbw decision off Broad overturned when the DRS confirmed that the ball had pitched outside leg stump.Carey went on to top-score for the innings, falling one run shy of his fifty when Broad had him caught behind. Wood then claimed his sixth, with a length ball that was bang on target as Cummins played and missed.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Burns was back in the side for the first time since he was dropped after the second Test in Adelaide, sporting an untethered hairstyle as he and Crawley played with some freedom to take England to 68 without loss at more than four runs an over.It was the highest opening stand by either side in the series but when Green had Burns out chopping on to a delivery that angled in from around the wicket on what turned out to be the last ball before tea, there was danger in the air. With Crawley looking in decent touch and the likes of Malan, Joe Root and Ben Stokes to come, there should have been more cause for optimism but England’s performances throughout their tour of Australia had long ago curbed any enthusiasm for their chances.Struck a nasty blow to the side of the helmet from Green, Malan lasted 13 more deliveries before he edged on to his stumps and when Green removed Crawley, edging behind to Carey with the second ball of his next over, he had figures of 3 for 17 from 4.2 overs.Stokes fell hooking a Starc short ball to deep square leg, where Nathan Lyon took a strong catch running in from the boundary, and when Root copped an unplayable delivery from Boland – who was excellent again in just his third Test – that kept low and crashed into off stump, an England procession looked inevitable. And so it proved, with Cummins dismissing Ollie Pope, Wood and last man Ollie Robinson to finish as the leading wicket-taker for the series with 21 at an average of 18.04. Boland was third-highest behind Starc with 18 at 9.55.

    WHAT MARTIN ODEGAARD SAID

He said, via : “For the team, we’re in a good position. But still I feel like we have another gear, another step that we can take and hopefully we can hit that top form now until the end of the season. It was the same last year. We really hit top form towards the end of the season. Hopefully we can do that again and finish with a good run.

“It’s (goals) been something that I haven’t been good enough with this season. I feel like I’ve been in enough situations and created a lot for others but I haven’t been clinical enough with the finishing. So that’s something that I really want to step up towards the end of the season.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Indeed, Odegaard scored 15 goals in 2022-23 and 11 last season, but has managed just two this term. If Arsenal are finally to end their long drought for a league title, everyone, including the Norwegian, need to raise their game.

    WHAT NEXT?

Arsenal host defending Premier League champions Manchester City on Sunday in a game that could end their title hopes if they lose.

Everton gem who left in 2023 is now "insane" and outscoring Dwight McNeil

Everton have endured an interminable period of struggle in the Premier League but might just be heading toward a new era of success, with the Friedkin Group on the cusp of purchasing Farhad Moshiri’s majority stake.

The 2024/25 campaign kicked off with four successive losses in the top flight to cast a gloomy setting over Goodison Park, but a draw at Leicester City has been followed up with a turnaround victory over Crystal Palace in the Premier League to lift Sean Dyche’s side out of the relegation zone.

The Merseysiders are indebted to Dwight McNeil’s fast start to the season, with the winger turned number ten thriving in his new role.

Dwight McNeil's recent Everton form

It’s been a bit more than two years since Everton signed McNeil from Burnley for a £20m fee. The playmaking winger had risen to first-team prominence with the Clarets – under Dyche’s wing – but had failed to save them from relegation, and was understandably allowed to move to a Premier League side.

Dwight McNeil for Everton

He’s chalked up 14 goals and 12 assists across 88 appearances for the Toffees, but is really starting to come into his own this season as he moves away from left wing to a more central attacking midfield role, flourishing.

Indeed, the 24-year-old has bagged four goals and two assists across eight matches, already surpassing last year’s haul of three goals from 41 matches in all competitions.

As per FBref, he ranks among the top 6% of positional peers across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for shot-creating actions and the top 15% for progressive carries per 90, emphasising his efficacy in driving the play forward and making things happen with his ball-playing.

McNeil has outscored Dominic Calvert-Lewin so far in 2024/25, with the centre-forward’s salvaged fitness levels allowing him to lead the line across all six of Everton’s top-flight matches this season, bagging two goals and claiming one assist.

Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin

The towering talisman might have only posted a modest return at best, but his restoration is such a bonus for the Blues in their quest to preserve top-flight status.

Believe it or not, there’s a former Everton player, sold not too long ago, who’s outscoring both of the aforementioned this season, and he did it all in just one game.

Tom Cannon is on fire for Stoke City

We’re talking, of course, about Tom Cannon, who put four past Portsmouth in the Championship on Wednesday evening in what was unquestionably the performance of the 21-year-old’s fledgling career.

Plying his trade with the Potters this term after leaving Leicester City on loan, Cannon will feel that his career is now starting to take off, having moved to Leicester from Everton last summer for roughly a £7.5m fee.

A natural-born goalscorer, Cannon excelled at youth level for Everton but failed to break into the first team despite impressing while on loan with Preston North End in 2022/23. His talent was recognised by Leicester, however, and the Liverpool-based side were happy to turn a profit.

Hailed for his “insane” performance against Portsmouth by Stoke correspondent Pete Smith, the aptly-named Cannon fired them in like howitzers to lift his loan outfit into 14th place after six fixtures, curbing a three-game losing run. Portsmouth, back in the second tier after years away, remain winless.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast's Where Are They Now series.

As per Sofascore, the young gun showcased a skillset that stretches beyond that of a ‘poacher’, putting in a performance of a rounded and dynamic nature.

On top of his four-goal haul, Cannon succeeded with his one attempted dribble, won the penalty. that he converted for his hat-trick, completed 81% of his passes and won seven of his 11 contested duels.

Everton must rue cashing in on the talent, especially since the small fee recouped for his sale in 2023 was put toward signing Beto from Udinese in a deal worth up to £30m.

Moreover, compounding the issue, Calvert-Lewin’s contract at Goodison Park is set to expire at the end of the campaign, and though Armando Broja was welcomed from Chelsea in August on a loan deal that could become permanent, the Albania international has yet to feature as he recuperates from injury and, having endured extended spells on the sidelines in the past, perhaps can’t be entrusted with the role of focal frontman just yet.

Cannon, however, is proving that he has the goalscoring prowess to succeed in the Premier League, ranking as he does among the top 6% of strikers across divisions similar to the Championship for goals scored and the top 9% for through balls per 90.

That latter metric is particularly interesting, speaking of a passing game and enterprise in his movements that could prove to be tailor-made for Dyche’s system, dropping deep and getting stuck in but also boasting the pace and power to drive forward and get into promising positions, where he can lash shots past the goalkeeper and into the net.

Given that, on Tuesday evening, Cannon outstripped both McNeil and Calvert-Lewin for goalscoring this season despite the promise shown from each of Everton’s star forwards this year, it might come to be a well-known fact that Everton suffered a massive blunder when letting their young and talented forward, Cannon, leave for a small fee.

He’s got the quality to become a major player.

Arsenal player ratings vs Tottenham: North London is red – Leandro Trossard and Gabriel lead comeback to propel Gunners back into title race

The derby swung the way of Arsenal over 95 enthralling minutes of football as the hosts took the spoils in a 2-1 victory

Arsenal closed the gap to Premier League leaders Liverpool to just four points with a frantic 2-1 win at home to Tottenham in the north London derby. Mikel Arteta's side were in dire need of a result to reignite their season following disappointing cup losses against Newcastle and Manchester United last week, and duly delivered with a comeback victory on home soil.

The hosts had all of the possession early doors but were nearly undone on the counter when Djed Spence zipped away down the left and delivered a teasing cross into Dominic Solanke, only for Gabriel to make a superb recovery challenge and deny a certain goal. From the ensuing corner, David Raya stood tall to keep out Dejan Kulusevski from point-blank range.

And with their next attack, Tottenham took a shock lead. Gabriel's header from another corner fell kindly to Son Heung-min on the edge of the box, and his volley deflected off the toe of William Saliba before squeezing through the legs of Thomas Partey and beyond a helpless Raya.

Just before the break, though, Arsenal turned the game around. An in-swinging corner from Declan Rice sailed over to Gabriel at the back-post, and his header went in off Dominic Solanke for the equaliser. Spurs were furious with the decision to award the Gunners a corner after the ball appeared to take a nick off Leandro Trossard rather than Pedro Porro as the referee had believed.

Minutes later, Arteta's side went in front. Yves Bissouma was dispossessed in midfield too easily, with Martin Odegaard switching play left to Trossard, and his powerful shot bounced over the weak wrists of Antonin Kinsky.

The Gunners sought to extend that lead in the second half, and went mightily close when Kai Havertz headed narrowly wide from an Odegaard corner soon after the restart. A mix-up at the back for Spurs then afforded Havertz and Raheem Sterling the opportunity to sweep home from inside the 18-yard box, but neither were able to take up that invitation.

Rice and Gabriel Martinelli both went close as Arsenal continued to dictate the game, while Odegaard missed the chance to ice the game from well inside the Spurs box in the closing stages.

Arsenal managed to keep Tottenham at a safe enough distance for five minutes of added time, in spite of Porro rattling the post from a vicious cross, and held on to secure three precious points and climb back above Nottingham Forest into second, while Spurs could still end this round of fixtures as low as 14th.

David Raya (7/10):

Played his part by claiming some high crosses, while his superb early save to keep out Kulusevski sadly fell into the backdrop of an eventful evening.

Jurrien Timber (7/10):

Son may have scored but the Spurs captain didn't have any luck in trying to beat the Dutchman down his side for the rest of the night. Looked absolute exhausted in the second half but soldiered on nonetheless.

William Saliba (7/10):

Didn't cover himself in glory when turning his back on Son's strike for the opening goal, though was pretty formidable that blemish aside.

Gabriel (8/10):

Arsenal's main man at both ends of the pitch. Came up with a superb sliding challenge to prod the ball away from Solanke with the goal gaping and scores locked at 0-0 before heading onto Solanke for the equaliser.

Myles Lewis-Skelly (8/10):

A night the 18-year-old won't ever forget, with the home fans chanting he was 'one of their own'. Scarcely put a foot wrong, with his most notable discrepancy a foul throw-in during the second half. Given a standing ovation when subbed off for Zinchenko.

Thomas Partey (6/10):

Won the ball back off Bissouma which led to Trossard's winner on the stroke of half-time. Gave possession away in similar fashion on occasion.

Declan Rice (8/10):

Started a little within himself, but boy did he grow into the game as it wore on. Owned the midfield battle alone with one breathless shift. Taken off for Merino towards the end.

Martin Odegaard (7/10):

Exuded that typical elegance like a ballerina on tiptoes. Grabbed the all-important assist for Trossard's strike.

Raheem Sterling (5/10):

Failed to make the most of a rare opportunity to start. Drew the ire of a frustrated home crowd whenever he decided against motoring down the flank and instead slowing down play. Replaced by Martinelli after an hour.

Kai Havertz (6/10):

Ran the hard yards and seemed desperate to make up for last week's misgivings. Lacked a direct threat himself but worked extremely hard for the cause.

Leandro Trossard (8/10):

So often the man at the end of Arsenal's clearest chance. Took his goal well, even if Kinsky ought to have got a stronger wrist to it. Replaced by Tierney late on.
