'We had sufficient wickets in hand' – Rovman Powell

He feels West Indies probably would have won or come very close had the game lasted the full duration

‘We think this Indian team is beatable’ – Rovman Powell

West Indies allrounder Rovman Powell believes his side was well-placed with “sufficient” wickets in hand to make a powerful launch in the last four overs to overhaul the target of 168 against India in the second T20I. Instead, a lightning alarm forced an initial delay at the 15.3-over mark with West Indies needing 70 to win before torrential thunderstorms officially ended proceedings with India declared winners by 22 runs via the DLS method.”I think the wicket was a little bit better,” Powell said after Sunday’s defeat while assessing West Indies’ batting performance compared to a day earlier when they struggled to 95 for 9 after being sent in. “It came onto the bat a little more. It didn’t spin as much or it wasn’t as slow as yesterday. As a team, I just thought we were an over behind. If the game had finished, we probably would have won or come very close.”I think we had sufficient wickets in hand. We had Kieron Pollard and [Shimron] Hetmyer at the crease, and Carlos Brathwaite and Keemo Paul to come in. I think those are guys that could have brought it to them. I guess in the end India are runaway winners but we don’t look at it and say we were far behind.”But rather than a possible finishing kick that was stymied by rain, a bigger issue was a poor start to their innings for the second day in a row as West Indies once again found themselves at 8 for 2. West Indies captain Brathwaite had said a day earlier that Sunil Narine was kept down the order in the first T20I so as not to expose him to offspinner Washington Sundar turning the ball away from him. Yet, Narine was sent in less than 24 hours later to open for the first time in a T20I for West Indies.Despite Narine’s well-documented success as an opener in T20 leagues, the strategy failed for West Indies as Washington didn’t concede a run off the bat in his first two overs bowling to the left-handed Narine – who opened after John Campbell was left out of the XI – and Nicholas Pooran. Narine racked up nine dot balls against Washington with the sequence ultimately ending in a failed charge that saw the batsman bowled for 4.”Sunil, around the world, has opened for different franchises,” Powell said. “We decided as a team that we were going to use that option today but unfortunately it just didn’t come off.”In contrast, Powell found success, top-scoring for West Indies with 54 off 34 balls at a venue that he is familiar with. Playing for Jamaica Tallawahs, he has made five appearances at the Central Broward Regional Park in the last two CPL seasons. That helped.”I’m comfortable with the ground,” Powell said. “It has been my home ground for maybe the last year or two with regards to the CPL. So I’ve played a lot of cricket here. I think it has got very good facilities and I feel at home whenever I come here.”Powell said that although India had already clinched the three-match series, he didn’t feel the results were particularly lopsided. Instead, he thought West Indies were not far off from turning the results around on Tuesday in the final T20I in Guyana to help give the hosts a momentum boost heading into the ODI series.”I wouldn’t know what changes will be made [for the third T20I] over maybe a two-day period,” Powell said. “But what we will say is that the team that is heading to Guyana, we’re looking to put our best foot forward. We think this Indian team is beatable and it’s just for us to string together good performances to show people that.”

Chris Jordan, Ben Brown pass 150 unbeaten to rescue Sussex

Visitors were 68 for 6 before pair saved the day in style

If Chris Jordan was feeling frustrated at watching his slim chance of making the cut for England’s World Cup squad disappear before his eyes over the past two weeks, then there are not many better ways in which he could have got it out of his system. His career-best unbeaten 158, the third century of his career, was an essay in controlled aggression, occasionally risky but never irresponsibly so, and with no leaping around punching the air as he ran the single that took him to his century or after the magnificent straight drive that took him past 150 in the midst of a wonderful record-breaking partnership with Ben Brown, who finished 10 short of his career-best on 153 not out.Yet you sensed he must have been feeling a particular kind of satisfaction at that moment, one borne of being selected for the one-day series against Pakistan that ended on Sunday – a chance, he must have thought, to make a late claim for a World Cup place – only to play no part, beyond being a substitute fielder. His response here, then, was hugely impressive, not least to his teammates, who watched with growing appreciation as he and his captain repaired the damage of a dreadful morning that had seen them lurch from 20 without loss to 68 for 6.”It can be a little bit frustrating to be with England like that and not get a game,” Jordan said afterwards.”But I tend to take the positives from a situation and the fact of the matter is that I had not been called up to that 50-over squad for three years so it means I am getting close again. Unfortunately I was not able to get a go but the boys are in great shape for the World Cup and it is good to be playing cricket again with Sussex.”Going out to bat at 68 for 6, Jordan said, was “not ideal”. Brown will certainly have concurred. During that torrid passage, he must have wondered what he was thinking when he looked at a green-tinged pitch before play and decided he wanted to bat. More so when the toss went against him and his opposite number said he was happy for him to do so.Alex Wakely was clearly spot-on about the conditions favouring his bowlers, the ball moving in the air and some nipping away off the pitch too. Moreover, several Sussex batsmen played some pretty woeful shots, as if disoriented to be batting.Ben Sanderson inflicted the first blows, taking three for none in 10 deliveries as Phil Salt lost his off stump, Tom Haines skewed one to point off a leading edge and Stiann Van Zyl drove loosely to mid-off.Luke Wells got a good one from Luke Procter that zipped away and took the edge, Adam Rossington taking a tumbling catch in front of slip, but Harry Finch did not offer a shot to the ball from Nathan Buck that literally broke his middle stump and David Wiese, who had been in excellent form in 50-over cricket, was bowled by a fullish delivery from Jamie Overton, the Somerset bowler who is here on loan, without scoring.Jordan, in fact, was a little fortunate not to go the same way, the ball flying between ‘keeper and first slip as he tried to jam the bat down on another Overton delivery that was well pitched up.From a Sussex viewpoint, it was the last scare before lunch. Nonetheless, 77 for 6 was a test for their digestion. No one could have imagined 370 for 6 at the close, yet from thereon in, Jordan and Brown reigned supreme. That is not to say that nothing troubled them. There was still something in the pitch, clearly, and neither batsman was immune from playing and missing. Yet Jordan, in particular, looked confident, punching boundaries both sides of the wicket and driving forcefully if Northamptonshire’s bowlers strayed in length or line, and the presence at the other end of a batsman with a very different style was certainly a factor in making that happen quite regularly.”We have batted together a few times and we tried to rotate the strike,” Jordan said. “We hit the ball in different areas and that makes it difficult for bowlers to settle on one length or one line.”Brown hit 20 boundaries, Jordan 24, the most thrilling of which came towards the close as he drove Procter straight down the ground three times in the same over, the third of them taking him past 150.”We did not get that many balls to hit down the ground so it felt good at the time and I’m grateful to get a personal best,” he added. The partnership is the highest conceded by any Northamptonshire side for the fifth wicket and the second-highest scored by a Sussex partnership, the highest being 344 by K S Ranjitsinhji and Billy Newham against Essex at Leyton in 1902, which was the highest by any side in the County Championship until Jonny Bairstow and Tim Bresnan put on 366 for Yorkshire against Durham at Chester-le-Street in 2015.That mark could yet be under threat.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Pochettino has openly admitted he would "relish" the chance of managing England and the job may well come up this summer. Southgate has hinted he could retire after Euro 2024 if the Three Lions are victorious. Yet Pochettino may receive an alternative offer before then. Manchester United are set to sack Erik ten Hag this summer, regardless of whether they win the FA Cup final, and the former Chelsea boss is a target for the Red Devils.

    WHAT NEXT FOR POCHETTINO

Pochettino leaves Chelsea after seeing his team end a tough campaign on a winning run that clinched sixth place and European football for next season. The former Chelsea boss joins the likes of Thomas Tuchel, Massimiliano Allegri, Roberto De Zerbi and Jurgen Klopp in leaving high-profile clubs. Meanwhile, Chelsea now join Bayern, Juventus, Brighton and, potentially Manchester United, in looking for a new coach.

Ange can land his best Spurs transfer yet in £100m man who’s "like Harry Kane"

Considering a new manager was appointed and they lost their most important player, Harry Kane, Tottenham Hotspur have had an excellent start to the 2023/24 Premier League campaign.

The Lilywhites currently sit in fifth place after 16 matches, picking up 30 points and nine wins. The latest of those came last weekend against Newcastle, as they swept the Magpies aside with a 4-1 victory.

Each of Ange Postecoglou’s signings since he was appointed as Spurs’ manager have been a hit, yet the Australian is keen to add another attacker to his squad.

Spurs transfer latest – Ivan Toney

According to the Mirror, Postecoglou has his eye on a handful of players this winter, ranging from centre backs to strikers. A name that features on that list is Brentford star Ivan Toney.

Ivan Toney competing against Aston Villa's Ezri Konsa.

Chelsea and Arsenal are also interested in the forward, who is open to leaving the Bees, but his club is hopeful of keeping hold of him until the summer.

The 27-year-old has a market value of £30m according to Transfermarkt, but Brentford are reportedly only willing to accept £100m this winter.

The stats that show Ivan Toney would be Ange’s best signing yet

Toney proved to be one of the deadliest strikers in the Premier League last season, scoring 20 goals in 33 starts for a mid-table club, and you can just imagine the impact he would have in a side with creativity in abundance like Spurs.

Despite Heung-min Son performing brilliantly as a makeshift centre forward – scoring ten league goals this season – Spurs must sign a replacement for Kane, who left for Bayern Munich in the summer, and there isn’t a better striker available than Toney, who has been described as “like Harry Kane” by England star Declan Rice.

Although Toney doesn’t get near Kane’s playmaking and passing ability from a statistical perspective, it is important to take the team they played for into context. But based on the statistics below, it is clear that the number 17 is a true number nine and this is how he compares to Kane.

Postecoglou currently doesn’t have the facilities to field an instinctive finisher who has played solely as a striker throughout their career, and signing Toney could elevate Spurs to the next level.

Son, Pedro Porro, James Maddison, and Dejan Kulusevski are all creative monsters, boasting at least six big chances created each this season, and when you combine that with Toney’s movement and box presence, you would fancy Spurs to cause havoc in attack against any team in Europe.

However, it is important to note that Toney would bring much more than just goals to the table, as he would also provide physicality to the attack and make the Lilywhites much more dangerous from set pieces. His work rate off the ball is also excellent, and he would slot right into the high-pressing, relentless Spurs side.

Unfortunately for the new boss, Kane would have been the final piece to the puzzle this season, but Toney definitely has the potential to get close to the ex-captain's output. Even though Maddison has hit the ground running, the Brentford man could just become the best signing of the Ange era so far.

Burnley now lining up cut-price move for "outstanding" player in January

Burnley are embroiled in a relegation battle at Turf Moor and could look to help their cause by bringing a talented player to Lancashire in January, according to a report.

Burnley's persistence with Vincent Kompany

Undoubtedly, the Clarets have shown commendable persistence with Vincent Kompany over the course of this term as he continues to bring an entertaining brand of football to Turf Moor despite outside criticism of his approach. In the aftermath of the Clarets' 5-0 victory over Sheffield United last weekend, Belgian boss Kompany praised his players for their commitment to carrying out his style of play that he has unwaveringly stood by despite learning some harsh lessons along the way in the Premier League.

"I don't take it for granted, the amount of pressure there was on the game to turn up and perform, it is a difficult thing to do. I work with an awesome group of players; all I am doing as a coach is hoping every weekend they can translate their hard work into results. Today is one of those days."

As we so often see in the English top flight, managers come under increasing pressure to deliver the results required to maintain their status on a year-by-year basis in the division, sometimes to the detriment of a long-term vision being the primary concern at any given club.

Burnley eyeing "brilliant" player for Kompany to boost survival chance

The Clarets are in desperate need of reinforcements…

By
Tom Cunningham

Dec 3, 2023

The Clarets don't have this problem due to their faith in the man who assembled a side that wreaked havoc in the Championship last season on their way to promotion, which can only bode well for the future as Burnley continue to acclimatise to their new position in the football pyramid.

Looking ahead to January, Kompany is now believed to have a new defender in his sights who could arrive for a cut-price fee, according to a report.

Burnley eyeing Eiran Cashin

According to TEAMtalk, Derby County defender Eiran Cashin is a target for Burnley alongside a host of other clubs as he continues to impress at Pride Park under Paul Warne. The report states that Brighton & Hove Albion, West Ham United, Sheffield United, Birmingham City and Middlesbrough are all in the frame to sign the Republic of Ireland Under-21 international.

Cashin will be a free agent in the summer of 2024 if he fails to sign a new contract at his current employer. Derby County are hopeful the Mansfield-born star will choose to commit his future to the club; however, if he doesn't, the Rams may look to cash in on his services in January, potentially making him available for a cut-price fee.

Derby County defender Eiran Cashin in action.

Labelled "outstanding" by former manager Wayne Rooney in 2022, Cashin has made 23 appearances in all competitions for Derby County this term, registering one goal in the process (Cashin statistics – Transfermarkt).

Burnley already have an encouraging crop of talented young stars at Turf Moor and Cashin could fit in well with Kompany's long-term plans at the club, making this a deal to watch.

Club now eye transfer move to sign “excellent” Rangers gem Adam Devine

A "really strong" Rangers player could be set to leave the club in the near future, according to an update regarding potential interest in him.

Rangers transfer news

The Gers weren't even in Scottish Premiership action over the weekend, due to Scottish League Cup final commitments, but that doesn't mean they still haven't had something to shout about in the league.

Celtic's defeat at home to Hearts means Philippe Clement's side are only five points adrift of their rivals but have two games in hand, meaning they can reach the summit if they win both of those matches.

Some January transfer business could certainly aid Rangers in their quest for a first league title since 2020/21, and a number of players have been spoken of a possible signings. Everton pair Ben Godfrey and Mason Holgate have both been sounded out as options for Clement, with the duo possibly capable of making the Scottish giants even stronger defensively.

There is always a chance that players could leave Ibrox, however, should they not be earning the playing time they expect, and an exit update has now emerged.

Adam Devine could leave Rangers

According to The Daily Record, MLS side Vancouver Whitecaps are interested in signing Rangers youngster Adam Devine.

Adam Devine

"Rangers starlet Adam Devine has emerged as a potential target for MLS side Vancouver Whitecaps. The Scotland Under-21 international signed a new deal at Ibrox last year to keep him with the Light Blues until 2025 but has featured just once this season in the Viaplay Cup opening round against Morton at the start of the season.

"Boyhood fan Devine has been living the dream at Ibrox but might be forced to consider his options in search of regular first team football."

It has clearly been a frustrating season for Devine to date, and as the report mentions, his solitary appearance came all the way back in August, meaning he is yet to play a single minute under Clement.

Granted, the defender is still only 20 years of age, so can't necessarily be expected to walk into the starting lineup regularly – James Tavernier is a star man who is difficult to budge – so he may consider a move away next month, seeing it as a good chance to kick on in his career.

Devine, described as making "excellent progress" by former Ibrox chief Ross Wilson last year, is a talented prospect, however, and Michael Beale was an admirer of his during his time as Rangers manager, once even joking that he could oust Tavernier in the team:

"It’s early days for Adam but I don't think he’s looked phased. Tonight, in an attacking sense, in the first half he got into really good areas but the young boy on the wing for them caused him one or two issues as well. I got into him a bit at half-time and I thought he had a really strong second half. You’ve got to remember, he’s playing on the wrong side as well. I think he’ll jump up another 20-25 percent if he’s at right back. So maybe our captain needs to look over his shoulder!"

Clement must now unleash Rangers' £22k-p/w "god given" gem

Rangers can win their first League Cup since 2011 when they face Aberdeen today

ByRoss Kilvington Dec 17, 2023

It seems clear that Clement doesn't currently see Devine as part of his plans, however, so if all parties feel an Ibrox departure makes the most sense, it is a transfer that should be looked at in January.

'I told my wife I'd be back for the top job' – Ashley Giles on bouncing back from ECB sacking

Harsh lessons of 2014 serve England’s new director of cricket well, as he lays out vision for his tenure

George Dobell09-Jan-2019It speaks volumes for Ashley Giles’ determination – and confidence – that even at one of the lowest points of his career, he was planning his comeback. In April 2014, Giles was sacked as England coach. Paul Downton, who was the managing director of England cricket at the time, called at his house one day and informed him that he was to be replaced by Peter Moores. His reaction? Anger, certainly. But also determination. And before Downton’s car had disappeared from sight, Giles had turned to his wife, Stine, and informed her he would be back and he would be the boss.”I don’t know if I was sacked or made redundant,” Giles says, “but whichever way it was, it wasn’t very nice.”But I said I would be back at the time. I don’t know if I said it to Paul, but I certainly said it to my wife. And, if you look at my career progress over the last four or five years, I have sort of prepared for this role. If you are a performance director, this is the pinnacle.”You can understand why Giles was angry. He was one of only two long-serving men – Kevin Pietersen was the other – completely cut adrift by the ECB after the debacle of the 2013-14 Ashes, despite having no direct involvement in the coaching of that team. And while results at the 2014 World T20 were not pretty – England had been eliminated even before a heavy defeat against Netherlands – Giles had some mitigation. As the junior partner in a split coaching structure – Andy Flower was very much the dominant figure – he had become used to seeing his first-choice players rested from white-ball cricket. But that anger has long since faded into something more constructive. And while Downton has now made the reverse journey – he is doing a fine job as director of cricket at Kent – and Flower is a strong favourite to take up Giles’ old role as director of cricket at Warwickshire, Giles himself now looks back on the episode as the making of him.”We all feel hard done by when you leave positions,” he says now. “But now I think it was a great learning curve for me.”I didn’t manage that balance between the short-term plans and long-term vision well. I always had in mind that I would one day become Test coach and perhaps, if I hold my hand up, I took my eye off the importance of winning tomorrow. In coaching you can’t afford to do that.”I think that experience will help me in this role. In this role you have to worry about tomorrow and the long-term strategy.Ashley Giles, ECB’s new director of England cricket, at Lord’s•Getty Images”That period with Andy Flower and the unravelling of the team in the Ashes and then the debacle against the Netherlands in Bangladesh, I guess that was almost a catalyst for me going back to university, studying, taking a masters and changing paths slightly. It was a good life lesson. It got me where I am today.”Giles’ behaviour in the months following that sacking is instructive. Instead of publicly criticising the ECB – as Pietersen did in a now-infamous book – Giles persuaded them to fund his return to university as part of his severance package. As a result, he went to Manchester Metropolitan Business School and gained a Master of Sport Directorship. And, instead of applying for coaching jobs, which he concluded left him vulnerable to fluctuations in fortune that could not always be controlled, he turned his interest to director of cricket roles which seemed more secure and more appropriate to a man with a hip replacement who no longer feels especially comfortable in a tracksuit. Less than a year ago, he declined an invitation to apply for the role of National Selector – a role subsequently filled by Ed Smith – in the belief that was a backward step for a man who had already served as a selector. So, what can we expect from Giles? Well, any player expecting a relaxation of the curfew that has been in place since the last Ashes tour is likely to be disappointed, for a start. And, in the long term, it seems the habit of playing football ahead of training every day may well be in jeopardy.”Curfews are in place to protect the guys,” he says. “I discussed curfews years ago. I don’t think we should look at those as being a negative thing. Everyone needs boundaries so it’s important that we have things in place that protect our guys.”We have got a responsibility to protect our players and the discipline side of things is really important to me. I have a reputation as being quite firm, but I think I am fair.”We’ve got to keep our best players on the park and I’m not sure playing football is the best way of going about that. If you look at what football does, the benefits from a physiological and fun point of view are outstripped by the dangers. In the long term we’ll perhaps see a change there.”But when you talk about short-term derailers I don’t want to be blamed for losing the World Cup because we are not playing football. I am not coming in with an iron rod right now. It’s something I’ll speak to the captains and coaches about.”There are other areas we may see change. Giles is likely to be asked to ‘rationalise’ – a euphemism for ‘cut’ usually – the budget at Loughborough with a growing realisation that spending has exceeded achievement there over the last few years. And he hopes to improve the relationship between the counties and the England team, drawing on the knowledge around the circuit and ensuring domestic cricket is well placed to produce international players.”The domestic system is hugely important,” he says. “So it’s important we get our system right in Championship cricket, because that is where our Test cricketers are coming from.”The counties do a fantastic job. There was a meeting yesterday of the county directors of cricket and I looked round the table and realised there was a hell of a lot of knowledge I can tap into. That relationship is important and I think it could be better than it has been. I want to see much stronger collaboration with the counties.”And then there’s the coaching role. Despite his own experiences, Giles has always maintained that a split coaching arrangement could work well. There is an acknowledgement that some of the best candidates may be reluctant to take the year-round workload required for an England coach, so there seems every chance that the role will be split once more. Paul Collingwood (for the white-ball sides) and Gary Kirsten (for the Test side) may well be among the frontrunners.”Whatever we do – two coaches or one – we need to make it normal and acceptable that coaches have time off and are able to watch some other cricket or have a break,” Giles says. “The programme is extremely busy, so to expect one or two head coaches to be there all the time is quite challenging.”Part of my role is coach development so, absolutely, we should be developing future England coaches and giving them opportunities. Perhaps the new competition is part of that? But I’m not silly enough to think the next coach has to be English. We need the best man – or two men – for the job.”

Vihari, Nadeem and Markande star in India B's big win

Fifties from Dinesh Karthik and R Ashwin weren’t enough to prevent India A from slipping to a 43-run defeat

ESPNcricinfo staff23-Oct-2018Shahbaz Nadeem celebrates a wicket•AFPAn unbeaten 87 from Hanuma Vihari and three top-order wickets from Shahbaz Nadeem helped India B make a winning start to their Deodhar Trophy campaign, as they defended 261 to beat India A by 43 runs. Nadeem, the left-arm spinner, took the new ball and struck with successive balls in his second over to send back Prithvi Shaw and Karun Nair, both lbw.India A’s top order continued to flounder until R Ashwin joined Dinesh Karthik at 87 for 5. The Tamil Nadu pair added 123 to bring parity back to the contest: at one stage, India A needed 52 from 47 balls with five wickets in hand. But Mayank Markande broke the partnership, having Ashwin stumped for 54 (76b, 5×4), and Nadeem dismissed Karthik in the very next over, having him caught and bowled one short of a hundred. Karthik’s 114-ball innings contained 11 fours and a six.India A’s lower order then collapsed against the legspin of Markande, who finished with figures of 4 for 48. The last five wickets only added eight runs to India A’s total.Ashwin had a good match with the ball too, finishing with figures of 2 for 39 in nine overs as India B, who chose to bat first, limped to 261 for 8 after threatening to post a much bigger total. Forties from Mayank Agarwal and Shreyas Iyer set up Vihari and Manoj Tiwary (52, 58b, 1×4, 2×6) to put on 99 for the fourth wicket. At one stage, India B were 194 for 3 with 12.4 overs remaining. The run-out dismissal of Tiwary, however, sparked a collapse. No one from No. 6 downwards got into double figures even as Vihari tried to keep the scoreboard moving at the other end. Following Tiwary’s dismissal, Vihari scored 39 off 30 balls to finish unbeaten on 87 (95b, 9×4). At the other end, India B’s lower order and extras combined to score only 28 off 45 balls. Even so, India B’s total of 261 for 8 proved more than adequate.

Wrexham beat Mansfield Town 2-0Moved to the third place after the victoryParkinson delighted with a "hard-earned win"WHAT HAPPENED?

In a thrilling encounter at the Racecourse Ground, Wrexham emerged 2-0 victorious against title rivals Mansfield Town, propelling themselves back into contention for automatic promotion from League Two. Parkinson, expressed his immense satisfaction with his team's performance, hailing their grit, determination, and outstanding teamwork on the pitch after Paul Mullin's brace sealed the win for the hosts.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesWHAT PARKINSON SAID

Speaking to reporters after the match, Parkinson said: "It was a hard-earned win; gritty, determined and our out-of-possession work was outstanding. We’re enjoying it, and the lads are relishing every single game, and they’ll take a lot of heart from this result today. We respected Mansfield because of the season they are having, but the work from everyone right throughout the team restricted them.

“I thought the first goal was a magnificent move; Maxy’s pass was as good as you are likely to see, and Andy’s cross to Mulls brought a calm finish to put us ahead. Before the penalty, we had a twenty-minute period where we gave the ball away too cheaply, but then we got the pen which was a nice cushion. All in all, I think the teamwork was outstanding.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

With only one point now separating the top three teams in the league, including Stockport County and Mansfield Town, every match becomes crucial in the pursuit of promotion.

"It’s a very competitive division but we knew that at the start," he said. "There are teams in the league like Mansfield that have been building for years to have a season like this.

“It’s another game chalked off, there’s six to go and it’s an important one against one of our rivals. Now it’s about preparation for what will be a terrific occasion at Doncaster on Tuesday.”
