Alex Hales will return to the Sydney Thunder for the Big Bash as he becomes the first overseas player to sign a new deal with the league ahead of what is expected to be the arrival of a significant number of England players.Tom Banton (Brisbane Heat) and Tom Curran (Sydney Sixers) are so far the only other confirmed overseas names for the tournament but they had existing deals with their clubs.Hales, who was dropped from the England side shortly before the 2019 World Cup after receiving a ban for using recreational drugs and has not played since, was the second-highest run scorer in last season’s BBL with 576 at 38.40 and a strike-rate of 146.93.”To get the chance to come back is exciting because we’re at the start of something,” Hales said. “I think the next two-to-three years is going to be very special for Sydney Thunder as a franchise. I really believe that, and to know I’m coming back to that means a lot.”It is expected that England names will feature strongly in this season’s BBL. ESPNcricinfo previously reported that Jonny Bairstow and Jason Roy were lining up deals while Dawid Malan, the current No.1-ranked T20I batsman, is also in the mix and Liam Livingstone is tipped to head back to the Perth Scorchers. However, with England in talks about a limited-overs tour of South Africa in November it remains to be seen the availability of those who would be part of the squad. Overseas players arriving for the BBL will need to undergo two weeks of quarantine when they reach Australia amid the Covid-19 protocols.Shane Bond, the Sydney Thunder coach, said: “There’s a whole range of reasons to be excited about Alex extending his contract – and they’re exactly why we signed him in the first place. He is a great player who is available for the entire tournament.”He played brilliantly for us last year, but he was brilliant on-and-off the field. He was hugely popular with the players and support staff – and that’s how Alex is viewed wherever he plays.”We have some very talented players in our squad, and it is important to have those professionals, like Alex, around so they can learn off them as well. Everyone in the team is looking forward to having him back, he’s a brilliant bloke.”The revised fixture list for the BBL – which is currently due to start on December 3 – is yet to be confirmed by Cricket Australia but there is a chance it will be played in rolling hubs around the country to navigate the various Covid-19 border restrictions.

PCB withdraws Balochistan first XI coach Faisal Iqbal from National T20 Cup after PIA delays NOC

The PCB has withdrawn Faisal Iqbal, the Balochistan first XI head coach, from the upcoming National T20 Cup after his NOC was delayed from his parent organisation, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA). ESPNcricinfo understands the reason for the delay is becasue he is presently facing an inquiry about discrepancies between his date of birth and his name in the matriculation certificate from the one he had submitted for his employment with PIA in 2003.Iqbal was staying with his team in Muridke in a biosecure environment, a protocol for all teams playing domestic cricket. On the last day of quarantine, he, along with his assistant coach Wasim Haider, violated the protocol only to have their stay extended by five days. They were to be tested twice over and required to return negative both times before being allowed to join the team in Multan. After withdrawing Iqbal from the rest of the squad, the PCB named Haider as interim head coach for the tournament scheduled to start from September 30 in Multan.Unlike last year, all players, support staff and match officials who were offered contracts were asked to fulfill the stipulated term to obtain the NOC from their respective organisations. Unlike Iqbal, PIA has issued an NOC to their regular employees Ghulam Ali (head coach of Sindh Second XI) and Aizaz Cheema (Southern Punjab First XI), while other coaches in the system have understandably submitted their NOCs.ALSO READ: Salman Butt refuses to play National T20 Cup after Central Punjab demotes him“It would be unfair on Faisal Iqbal as well as on his side – and on the tournament – if he competed in a major domestic tournament until he had resolved and settled the matter with his parent organisation,” the PCB said in a statement. “Faisal Iqbal would be reintegrated with his domestic side as soon as PIA gave him a clean chit along with a No Objective Certificate (NOC). Until such time, Wasim Haider will act as the Balochistan cricket team’s interim head coach.”This year, the PCB had made substantial changes to the domestic set-up, bringing in new coaches with Iqbal being handed over the charge of Balochistan’s first XI team. However, there were as many as 16 coaches who lost heir jobs, including Azam Khan, Arshad Khan, Ijaz Ahmed Jnr and Kabir Khan. Abdul Razzaq is supposed to replace Kabir at Khyber Pakhtunkhwa while Basit Ali, the former SNGPL coach, will take over the reins from Azam at Sindh. Shahid Anwar is in charge of Central Punjab while both Abdur Rehman (Southern Punjab) and Mohammad Wasim (Northern Punjab) were retained. All six domestic coaches will also act as national selection committee members to assist Pakistan national team coach-cum-chief selector Misbah-ul-Haq.Iqbal, 38, had a prolific career at the junior level since making the Under-15 side. But his time with the seniors has, for the most part, been marred by allegations of nepotism. His career coincided with Mohammad Yousuf and Inzamam-ul-Haq being at their prime, and thus Iqbal was never able to cement his place in the team. His domestic figures are impressive with 12,685 runs at 39.64 in 225 matches to go along with 5,979 at 42.10 in List A games. Iqbal turned his attention to coaching since he retired from all cricket in 2018, having served as the Karachi Kings’ batting coach for the last two seasons of the PSL.

'Difficult' – Newcastle boss Eddie Howe gives update on Magpies future amid England job links following frustrating transfer window

Eddie Howe admitted it is "difficult" at Newcastle but assured the Magpies that he is looking forward to a "long reign" amid England job links.

  • Newcastle were subdued in the market
  • Howe has had his "hands off" from transfer dealings
  • Yet he has no qualms about continuing at St. James'
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Howe has been a subject of speculation regarding the England's national team manager position after Gareth Southgate stepped down following an agonising defeat in the European Championship final. However, Howe has always been quick to dismiss these rumours, emphasising that his commitment lies solely with Newcastle United.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

However, Newcastle have undergone notable changes at the boardroom level that might have impacted Howe's role at the club. Amanda Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi, who had a strong working relationship with Howe, left after selling their stake. Their departure saw the arrival of Paul Mitchell as the new sporting director, with Darren Eales stepping in as CEO to take the lead in the club's operations. These changes have brought about a shift in how the club operates and Howe admitted that this summer's transfer window was the most "hands-off" experience he has had since taking charge of Newcastle in November 2021.

  • WHAT HOWE SAID

“You have to understand that in the majority of the other windows the whole structure of the club has been different so that is not necessarily a criticism of the structure we have now,” Howe said.

“There are different personalities and there’s a different way of working now. Yes, it probably has been the most hands off I’ve been, but that’s not necessarily a negative. It’s just a different way of working.”

When asked about his future at Newcastle, Howe provided a candid response.

“It’s difficult to ever – and this isn’t a loaded answer, by the way – give any reassurance on anything in football, but I absolutely love being Newcastle manager," he said. "I’m very, very proud to do it. “No part of me is thinking anything other than trying to beat Tottenham and looking, hopefully, to a long reign here.”

Newcastle experienced a relatively quiet summer transfer window, with only a few additions to the squad. The Magpies secured Lewis Hall on a permanent deal from Chelsea, marking the most significant acquisition of the summer. Additionally, the club signed two outfield players: Lloyd Kelly, who joined on a free transfer from AFC Bournemouth, and Will Osula, who was signed for £15 million ($20m) from Sheffield United. The other recruits included goalkeepers John Ruddy and Odysseas Vlachodimos.

Australia wriggle free and march into World Cup final

Australia booked themselves into the final of the ICC Cricket World Cup with a comprehensive Duckworth Lewis affected 48 run win against Sri Lanka on Tuesday, another clinical performance that will only enhance the aura of invincibility that now surrounds Ricky Ponting’s side.Sri Lanka had their moments, making Australia’s top order struggle on the sluggish St George’s pitch at Port Elizabeth, but Australia once again wriggled free of trouble, posting a respectable 212 for seven after an unbeaten half-century from Andrew Symonds, before grabbing an iron-like grip on the game with the ball.Mid-innings the match may have looked evenly poised, but that was before the main contest of the day: speedster Brett Lee versus Sri Lanka’s pace-shy top order. Lee won the contest in convincing fashion, shrugging off the handicap of a turgid surface to take three wickets as Sri Lanka slumped to 76 for seven.Kumar Sangakkara (39*) and Chaminda Vaas (21*) provided some resistance, adding 47 runs in 13.5 overs for the eighth wicket, before rain forced the players from the field with Sri Lanka on 123 for seven after 38.1 overs, well behind the run rate according to the Duckworth Lewis machinations. No further play was possible, meaning Australia, who now have a record 16 successive World Cup wins under their belt, will face either India or Kenya in the tournament final at Wanderers on Sunday. The Sri Lanka innings had started brightly enough with the inform Marvan Atapattu (14) stroking three boundaries but Lee was cranking steadily up through the gears. The disappointment of a spilled catch at cover pushed him to full throttle and a thunderbolt yorker, clocked at a staggering 160.1 km per hour, rearranged his stumps.Sanath Jayasuriya (17), a shadow of his former self after being roughed up and maimed by Lee at Centurion, was snared by Lee’s new ball partner Glenn McGrath, swivel-pulling lamely into the hands of Symonds at backward square.Lee quickly mopped up Hashan Tillakaratne (3) and Avishka Gunawardene (1), both of whom wafted edges behind, before Andy Bichel sealed Sri Lanka’s fate with the brilliant run out of Aravinda de Silva, the last man capable of carrying Jayasuriya’s side to victory.De Silva, playing his last international game, had already signaled the threat he posed with two boundaries when Kumar Sangakkara nudged to mid-wicket and called for a quick single. Bichel, the bowler, quickly chased down the ball and threw down the stumps with de Silva yards out of his ground. The out-of-form Mahela Jayawardene, included in the side in place of paceman Dilhara Fernando earlier in the day as Sri Lanka packed their side with batting, extended his World Cup aggregate to 21 in seven innings before being caught off pad and glove. When Russel Arnold, Sri Lanka’s last recognised batsman, top edged a sweep to deep back square, having spent 27 balls scratching out his three runs, Sri Lanka dead and buried on 76 for sevenEarlier, after Australia had won an important toss, Symonds, a controversial selection when Australia’s World Cup squad was first announced, produced his second match-winning performance of the tournament, scoring an unbeaten 91 from 118 balls. The zinc-lipped right-hander, who would have been stumped on 33 had Sangakkara not spilled a straightforward take, rescued the Australian innings with a 93 run partnership for the fourth wicket.Australia had made a galloping start, racing to 34 off the first five overs as Pulasthi Gunaratne was smacked for 20 runs in his first two overs. But de Silva, called into the attack in just the sixth over, broke through with his second off-break of the day as Gilchrist edged an attempted sweep onto his pad to offer Sangakkara a simple catch. Had the 29-year-old stood his ground then he would have been reprieved by a doubting Rudi Koertzen but, in an act of rare Australian chivalry, Gilchrist walked.Vaas, who produced another skillful display, then claimed a brace of wickets as Ricky Ponting (2) mistimed a drive to be caught at mid-off and Matthew Hayden (20) clipped a stinging catch to mid-wicket. The left-armer extended his record World Cup tally to 23 when he had Lee Harvey caught at the wicket with a jagging off-cutter.Symonds and Lehmann then steadied the innings, never scoring easily against Sri Lanka’s quartet of slow bowlers, but preventing a Sri Lankan rout and laying a solid enough foundation for their bowlers later in the day.Eventually, Jayasuriya broke through with a well-flighted delivery that Lehmann chopped onto his stumps. The spinner had a chance of claiming a hat-trick when Michael Bevan (0), the hero during Australia’s previous two matches at Port Elizabeth, edged a catch behind.Brad Hogg (8) survived the hat-trick ball but did not last long before being smartly stumped by Sangakkara. After Harvey’s dismissal Australia were 175 for seven but Sri Lanka could not finish them off as Symonds and Bichel added 37 runs in the final 6.1 overs.

Man Utd must soon unleash Hojlund rival who’s their best teen since Mainoo

Although the present isn’t quite so brilliant at Manchester United, the future certainly looks extremely bright.

The star leading the rebuild will most definitely be Kobbie Mainoo, who’s been absolutely fantastic since breaking into the first team.

The 18-year-old has now started 18 Premier League games this season after making his debut against Everton in November, and has even made his England debut.

However, there’s a young talent in the United academy who has the potential to be the best talent since Mainoo, while also potentially ending up being a successor to Rasmus Hojlund.

Rasmus Hojlund’s first campaign at United in numbers

With the pressure of a £72m price tag on his shoulders and the demand to instantly succeed, Hojlund initially struggled to adapt to the Premier League.

Fast forward to today, and the Dane has seven goals and two assists in the English top flight, but his output has dried up in recent weeks.

Rasmus Hojlund

The 21-year-old now hasn’t scored in all of United’s last four Premier League games, but he spends most of his time on the field chasing shadows and receiving no service whatsoever.

Had there been a replacement in the squad for Hojlund, he may have been rotated, but there’s no doubt that he has the potential to lead the line for years to come, and he may have some competition via an academy player extremely soon.

Man Utd were rinsed by flop who earned more than Hojlund & Fernandes

The exceptionally gifted star drained the Red Devils and offered very little in return.

ByJack Salveson Holmes Mar 22, 2024 Ethan Wheatley could be up next

Ethan Wheatley isn’t a name that many of the United faithful will have heard before, but the 18-year-old made his first matchday squad against Bournemouth at the weekend.

The academy star is a relentless centre forward who’s thrived in the U21s and the U19s this season, and he certainly loves to score goals.

The number 84 has played 25 games across all competitions this season, boasting a record of 11 goals and also registering four assists, which is a fantastic return.

Earlier this season, Wheatley particularly impressed against København in the UEFA Youth League when he scored and assisted in a 2-2 draw, which proves he can provide much more than just goals.

As you can see from the clip above, Wheatley is an extremely dynamic striker who’s comfortable on the half-turn while having the confidence to unleash a strike from range.

It also highlights that he’s the type of forward who can create moments of magic out of nothing, even if there’s a lack of supply, which is an aspect that even Hojlund needs to develop.

However, he also has the characteristics of a goal-poacher, using clever movement to buy himself a yard of space in the box, where he often finds the back of the net.

Overall, the “sensational” attacker, as dubbed by Statman Dave, has an extremely bright future ahead of him, and Erik ten Hag has shown how keen he is to integrate him into the first team setup.

Spurs eye up new forward for Postecoglou

Spurs were dealt a hammer blow in their race for Champions League qualification after a dismal defeat at Newcastle on Saturday, but manager Ange Postecoglou has repeatedly dismissed the importance of fourth place.

26 year-old open to summer move to Tottenham, Ange wants him as well

Postecoglou is very keen on strengthening one key area.

ByEmilio Galantini Apr 13, 2024

For him, the emphasis is instead on how his team are progressing in terms of playing style on the pitch, as he also prioritises the longer-term project.

A big part of this will be how they invest into their squad during the next transfer window, and some reports have claimed that Tottenham are keen to replace Harry Kane with a marquee striking option.

Overall, Postecoglou's side have coped extremely well in their first full season with Kane, who is currently lighting up the Bundesliga amid an exceptional debut campaign at Bayern Munich.

Nevertheless, it is believed that a new number nine could well arrive at Spurs in the summer. One very interesting name they've been linked with is Brentford star Ivan Toney, who Bees boss Thomas Frank admits will depart before his contract expires in 2025.

“It is relatively obvious that Ivan Toney will probably be sold this summer,” Frank said to Danish media, via Tipsbladet.

“We also know what he is worth. I don’t think there are many strikers in the world who are better than him right now. He is a really skilled striker who is in his prime football age. Personally, as a coach, I would prefer to keep Toney but one day it could be fun to see him on a top team.

“This winter we actually had no offers for him, but it will surprise me if there aren’t a lot of clubs that will be interested in him.”

Spurs are thought to be eyeing Toney alongside a host of other sides in the top flight, and Agbonlahor believes Tottenham are prime candidates to sign the £75 million striker.

Agbonlahor believes Toney might be joining Tottenham

Speaking to talkSPORT, he claims Toney might be joining Spurs or Chelsea if he is to leave Brentford.

“I’d want to move, because another year at a Brentford team where they're underperforming," said Agbonlahor.

"You can tell by watching him, and when he speaks in interviews, he wants out. And another year is a long time. He’ll think to himself, ‘I can go in the summer and still get really good money.

"He’ll go and get 150 to 200 grand a week, it might be Chelsea or Spurs. He's going to get the signing-on fees as well. Spurs should be going all out for him. Because they can't keep with Richarlison, who I don't think is good enough for them.

“Son on the left, you can have Toney down the middle, you’ve got [James] Maddison behind. On the right you’ve got options. They’ll have [Dejan] Kulusevski, [Brennan] Johnson, whoever else you want to maybe bring in there."

Messi is nursing ankle damage, with a protective boot being donned at present, and no timescale has been put on his recovery. He has been ruled out of the MLS All-Star Game and is expected to miss Inter Miami’s defence of their Leagues Cup crown.

WHAT GOMEZ SAID

The lack of transparency regarding his fitness has, however, led ex-United States international Herculez Gomez to tell : “It is complete horsecrap that they won’t give you an outline on what’s exactly going on and how long it will be. Other teams have to give you that. Inter Miami staying tight-lipped and not saying anything, that to me is embarrassing for MLS. We’ve always heard things and seen things from MLS from the beginning, the LA Galaxy got away with these things, LAFC got away with those things, Toronto here, Seattle there, but when it comes to Inter Miami, you’ve not only proven to get away with it, you look the other away, you publicly look the other way.”

The Herons, who are co-owned by Manchester United legend David Beckham, are reluctant to take any risks on Messi’s fitness. They are prepared to offer him an extended break from action, with the hope being that he will then be ready to lead a push for MLS Cup glory in 2024.

In a first, Bangladesh name two concussion subs in one day

While there was a like-for-like swap, the choice to use Mehidy Hasan in place of Liton Das raised eyebrows

Mohammad Isam in Kolkata22-Nov-2019Bangladesh had to use two concussion substitutes after Liton Das and Nayeem Hasan were both hit on the helmet by Mohammed Shami. The visitors’ choice of replacements, though, put their planning for this series in poor light, as they had no specialist batsmen in reserve despite two batsmen in the original squad going unavailable well before the start of this match.ICC Playing Conditions

1.2.8.1 In assessing whether the nominated Concussion Replacement should be considered a like-for-like player, the ICC Match Referee should consider the likely role the concussed player would have played during the remainder of the match, and the normal role that would be performed by the nominated Concussion Replacement.
1.2.8.2 If the ICC Match Referee believes that the inclusion of the nominated Concussion Replacement, when performing their normal role, would excessively advantage their team, the Match Referee may impose such conditions upon the identity and involvement of the Concussion Replacement as he/she sees fit, in line with the overriding objective of facilitating a like-for-like replacement for the concussed player.

While there was one bowler-for-bowler swap with Taijul Islam taking Nayeem’s place, Mehidy Hasan, a specialist spinner, took over from Liton, a wicketkeeper-batsman. That means he cannot bowl in the game. As per the ICC playing conditions, a concussion substitute has to be a like-for-like replacement and perform the same role as that of the concussed player. Both Liton and Nayeem went to the hospital for scans, where concussions were confirmed. “Both players have been diagnosed with delayed onset of concussion by the medical team after being struck on the helmet while batting,” a BCB statement said. “Consequently their symptoms have ruled them out of the rest of the Test Match and they have been substituted with Mehidy Hassan Miraz and Taijul Islam respectively. They will now follow their concussion recovery protocol to ensure their safe recovery.”*It is unclear why the BCB didn’t call in replacements much earlier, considering both Saif Hassan and Mosaddek Hossain were ruled out long before day one of the Eden Gardens Test.Saif’s injury was confirmed on November 20, two days before the game, and although there are 30-minute flights between Dhaka and Kolkata, no one was was flown in. Mosaddek, meanwhile, had left the Test squad on November 11, even before the first Test, to be with an ailing family member, but the BCB didn’t name a replacement then either. This, in a squad missing Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal.Liton was hit on the helmet by a Shami bouncer in the 20th over of Bangladesh’s innings. He decided to bat on, struck two more fours, but walked off seven balls after the injury. Nayeem was hit off the third ball he faced and he too continued batting, whacking Shami for four boundaries before he lost his off stump to Ishant Sharma after making 19 runs. The concussion-sub rule came into effect in time for the Ashes earlier this year and since then it has been used five times in men’s Test cricket and India have been involved in four of them.In August, Steven Smith was replaced by Marnus Labuschagne after being hit by Jofra Archer. A few days later, in the Caribbean, Darren Bravo took a blow from Jasprit Bumrah and Jermaine Blackwood took his place. In October, Dean Elgar found himself in trouble after being struck by Umesh Yadav, which brought Theunis de Bruyn into the game. There is potentially a sixth instance on the cards with New Zealand’s Tom Blundell being on standby for Henry Nicholls, currently playing a Test against England.*This copy was updated at 5pm GMT with the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s official statement on the concussions.

All-muscle India look for bright start against shaky South Africa

India have named their XI with Rohit Sharma as opener and Wriddhiman Saha and R Ashwin in the mix

Agarkar: Was harsh on Ashwin to miss out in the West Indies

Big picture
Remember the first Test between these sides four years ago? South Africa had won the T20I series, Kagiso Rabada had outdone MS Dhoni in an ODI, South Africa had mauled 438 in another, and India took the ultimate gamble going into the Tests. Coach Ravi Shastri admitted later said those were desperate times, and they asked for extreme pitches to restore the confidence of a young team that was being outmuscled at home. The context, the anticipation, India’s coach playing mind games with an announcement that he didn’t mind playing four spinners, South Africa starting off with momentum and confidence, it all made up for a great build-up.Watch cricket on ESPN+

India v South Africa is available in the US on Hotstar and ESPN+. Subscribe to ESPN+ and tune in to the three Tests.

Remember the return tour? South Africa vowing revenge, asking for extreme pitches of their own, India fighting fire with fire, South Africa captain berating his own groundsmen for not being co-operative enough until he got them to co-operate so much that they nearly got the Wanderers banned. Now? Now the talk is about how South Africa have nothing to lose and all to gain. None of that needle or anticipation exists now as South Africa commence their sixth Test series in India. For a long time, South Africa were the gold standard for touring sides, but now the gulf between the two sides in these conditions is so huge that the absence of the best all-format bowler in the world is not even a big headline.ALSO READ: ‘I think if I don’t take wickets even in one innings, my career for India is over’ – Ishant SharmaIndia have since gone on to become competitive in all conditions, and efficient and intimidating at home. South Africa have lost many of the players that made them the threat they were at that time. Since November 2015, R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja have taken 256 wickets between them at home at an average of 20.78. Since India lost the home series to England in 2012-13, after which Ashwin-Jadeja became a duo, India have lost just one home Test out of 29.South Africa, a team in turmoil, a team that has only five survivors from that last tour when they used to be competitive away from home, are not being reticent but are merely stating facts when they say they have nothing to lose. Their one improvement over the last squad is Keshav Maharaj, easily a much better Test spinner than the ones that toured the last time. But he won’t be able to pull off miracles on his own. The South Africans will all have to play out of their skins if they are to win even one Test.Form guideIndia WWDWL (last five Tests, most recent first)
South Africa LLWWWIn the spotlightR Ashwin is still an India player. You could be forgiven for thinking he wasn’t: he last played for India last December. Out of limited-overs cricket, he lost his No. 1 spinner title to Jadeja in the West Indies. He will want to have a thing or two to say about it when he finally gets the SG ball in his hand.It is a matter of mild surprise that Faf du Plessis is still here, and that too as a captain. South Africa’s World Cup exit had strong end-of-era feels to it, which the coming months showed was not unfounded. Hashim Amla and Dale Steyn have retired, AB de Villiers remains retired, coaches are gone, politics is still a big factor. As a captain, du Plessis speaks at press conferences more honestly and openly than many others, and his resignation seemed apparent during the World Cup. It wouldn’t have surprised anyone if a worn-down captain had joined the exodus. Instead, he has chosen the cauldron where he will have to lead a young batting line-up. Over to you, Faf. Show us you’ve still got it.3:15

Maharaj as good as any spinner in the world – du Plessis

Team newsApart from Ashwin, making a comeback after 22 months of international absence is wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha. That means Rishabh Pant is out after having scored the first centuries for an India wicketkeeper in England and Australia. The argument is that Saha is more accomplished technically and that will be much more important when it turns at home. Also, Saha has a home Man-of-the-Match award for his batting, so he is no mug on that front either.Rohit Sharma will begin another attempt at resurrecting a stalled Test career as he converts to an opener.India 1 Rohit Sharma, 2 Mayank Agarwal, 3 Cheteshwar Pujara, 4 Virat Kohli (capt), Ajinkya Rahane, 6 Hanuma Vihari, 7 Wriddhiman Saha (wk), 8 R Ashwin, 9 Ravindra Jadeja, 10 Ishant Sharma, 11 Mohammed ShamiFaf du Plessis said South Africa were thinking of playing five bowlers, which might send Quinton de Kock up to No. 6, and Theunis de Bruyn is likely to move up to No. 3.South Africa (probable XI) 1 Aiden Markram, 2 Dean Elgar, 3 Theunis de Bruyn, 4 Faf du Plessis (capt), 5 Temba Bavuma, 6 Quinton de Kock (wk), 7 Vernon Philander, 8 Keshav Maharaj, 9 Kagiso Rabada, 10 Lungi Ngidi/Anrich Nortje/Senuran Muthusamy, 11 Dane PiedtPitch and conditionsCricket, say hello to climate change. Well past the monsoon season, it is still raining in many parts of India, devastatingly so, and the east coast is particularly unpredictable. There is forecast for some interruption on each of the days, and the pitch preparation is bound to be affected as well. It won’t, however, turn into the seaming monster that Eden Gardens became when it rained a lot in the lead-up to the Test against Sri Lanka two years ago. Virat Kohli said it was a typical Vizag pitch, which means slow turn, which South Africa won’t like. However, if there is excessive moisture retained, there could be some vicious turn at the start of the Test as evidenced in Bangalore against Australia in 2016-17.Stats and trivia Jadeja is two away from becoming the tenth Indian to take 200 Test wickets. If he does it in this, his 44th, Test, Jadeja will be the second-fastest Indian to mark, behind Ashwin’s 37 and ahead of Harbhajan Singh’s 46. Maharaj needs six more to become the 17th South Africa bowler to take 100 Test wickets.Quotes
“The credit goes to the team. We laid down a vision in 2015 that we were going to be flexible. We were going to choose sides according to the conditions because we wanted results, we wanted to be successful, we wanted to be at the top of the world. If the team hadn’t bought into it, it can become difficult to play with the intent we have played with.”
“It’s really exciting. It’s something fresh, it’s something new. We have played a lot of Test cricket, but this is the first of its kind. Playing India in any conditions is tough, playing them at home is tougher, so it is a nice challenge, but I am more excited about the World Test Championship. Right now we don’t know if it is a good or a bad system. It is something you have to go through yourself.”
