Sheaf has signed a Wrexham contract unitl 2028, with the option of a further 12 months. earlier reported the club will pay "in the region of" £6.5 million ($8.8m) for Sheaf, who was considered one of the Championship's top midfielders last season. This season, however, the 27-year-old found himself out of favour with Coventry boss Frank Lampard and the opportunity to move in search of more playing time is welcome.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Sheaf, developed by Arsenal's academy and going on to play three times for the Gunners first-team, extends Wrexham's already league-high net spend for the summer window. It might have been even higher, but for the pursuits of Rennes midfielder Jordan James and Bristol City defender Zak Vyner not coming to fruition.

  • WHAT SHEAF SAID

Speaking as part of Wrexham's announcement, Sheaf said: "The trajectory the club is on, I'm excited to be on board with that. From speaking to the manager, and from the ambition of the owners, it's clear it's only going one way. I'm looking forward to contributing.

"Change is always good, the move gets me out of my comfort zone – I've had some really good moments with Coventry and some memorable times but it's come to a time to look for something new and something exciting. When the opportunity to move to Wrexham came up, it's something I really wanted to be able to do – I'm excited to get started now."

The £6.5m fee doesn't threaten Wrexham's club record, which is the £10m ($13.5m) spent on Ipswich Town's Nathan Broadhead last month. However, it will immediately place Sheaf second on the list, ahead of £5m (£7m) capture Lewis O'Brien.

Massimiliano Allegri denies Adrien Rabiot talks amid Marseille fall out and insists he 'never asked' AC Milan to sign Dusan Vlahovic as Juventus striker remains in transfer limbo

AC Milan boss Massimiliano Allegri shut down Adrien Rabiot speculation and dismissed links to Dusan Vlahovic as the striker's transfer limbo drags on.

  • Allegri denies Rabiot transfer discussions
  • Milan links for Vlahovic firmly rejected
  • Juventus striker’s future remains uncertain

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Milan have had a busy transfer window since took over at the helm this window. Among the many candidates they have been linked to are two players who have already played under his leadership. Rabiot emerged as a possible signing amid his fallout with Marseille, while Vlahovic was reported to be a target as he looks to end his contract standoff with Juventus. Allegri, though, denies he has suggested the club sign either player.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Vlahovic has so far refused to leave Juve despite their desire to sell him because he refuses to extend his contract beyond its current 2026 expiry and accept a reduced salary. Rabiot, meanwhile, is in a precarious position as Marseille want to sell him following his physical altercation with Jonathan Rowe, though the player reportedly wants to stay at the Ligue 1 side.

As for Milan, saw another target escape their grasp as talks with Danish striker Conrad Harder of Sporting CP appear to have broken down. With Milan scrambling for reinforcements and Juve still holding firm on Vlahovic’s future, the Rossoneri find themselves in a tricky market situation.

  • WHAT ALLEGRI SAID

Pressed about Rabiot, Allegri was quick to downplay speculation, that he had not spoken to the French international: "No, absolutely not. We haven't spoken since before the holidays. I'm fond of Rabiot, but when he arrived at Juventus I left. He's a Marseille player, I can say I'm emotionally attached to him having worked together.

"I like Adrien Rabiot as a player, we have a good relationship as we spent time together at Juventus… but we didn’t talk recently."

On Vlahovic, he said: "No, I never asked for Vlahovic, also because he's a Juventus player. I've discussed his characteristics with the club, as well as the various situations that could arise. If players with different characteristics arrive, we'll do something."

    WHAT NEXT FOR MILAN?

For AC Milan, the hunt for attacking reinforcements continues. With Harder off the table and Vlahovic unwilling to budge, the Rossoneri must pivot quickly before the window closes. Allegri’s insistence that he “never asked” for Vlahovic suggests the club may turn to alternative profiles rather than pursue a high-cost striker. Meanwhile, the uncertainty around Rabiot is likely to rumble on, but barring a late breakthrough, he seems set to remain at Marseille, at least in the short term. As of now for the squad, the team needs a comeback as they set to face Lecce on Sunday, after an upsetting 1-2 loss against US Cremonese.

Man Utd accept defeat! Red Devils will not appeal Carabao Cup loss to Grimsby despite penalty shootout victors fielding ineligible player

Manchester United have refused the chance to force their way back into the Carabao Cup, despite evidence that Grimsby Town fielded a player who had registration issues in their second-round tie. The League Two side, who dumped United out in a dramatic penalty shoot-out, were found guilty of breaching EFL rules but escaped with nothing more than a fine.

At the centre of the storm is Clark Oduor, the 26-year-old midfielder loaned from Bradford. Oduor made his Mariners debut off the bench and even stepped up in the shoot-out, missing his spot-kick before Grimsby eventually triumphed 12-11. But behind the scenes, paperwork chaos told another story. The club admitted to EFL officials that Oduor’s registration had been submitted one minute past the deadline, rendering him technically ineligible for the tie.

Despite the breach, the EFL opted against the harshest of penalties. Instead, they fined Grimsby £20,000, half of which has been suspended until the end of the season. United had five days to challenge the verdict, yet chose to stay silent. suggests that a potential reason for this is pushing for reinstatement risked would have left the club open to mockery from rival fans. Some executives feared it would look like United were clutching at straws, trying to reclaim a spot they had lost on the pitch. The club’s hierarchy, already under scrutiny for poor results, ultimately decided it was better to take the blow and 'move on' rather than risk further embarrassment.

DID YOU KNOW?

While United wrestle with the fallout, Grimsby continue to bask in the glow of one of their greatest nights. The Mariners, cheered on by a raucous Blundell Park crowd, not only beat one of the biggest clubs in the world but did so under the shadow of a paperwork blunder that could have changed everything. Their reward is a third-round clash with Sheffield Wednesday, and they head into it buoyed by the belief that this cup run could become legendary.

Injured Stokes out of fifth Test against India, Archer and Carse rested

England will go into Thursday’s fifth Test at The Oval without their captain, with Ben Stokes ruled out with a torn shoulder muscle. Ollie Pope will deputise, leading for the fifth time in Tests, and England have made four changes in all from the draw in Manchester, with Jacob Bethell, Gus Atkinson, Jamie Overton and Josh Tongue all coming into the side.Jofra Archer and Brydon Carse are both rested after heavy workloads last week, while Liam Dawson is left out altogether. Bethell and Joe Root are the two spin-bowling options, with Chris Woakes retained to lead an inexperienced seam attack: England’s other three fast bowlers have 18 caps between them.Stokes arrived at The Oval on Wednesday morning hopeful to play as a specialist batter but after discussions with head coach Brendon McCullum and England’s medical team, and 20 minutes of quiet reflection, decided against playing through the pain. “The risk was way too high for damaging this any further than it currently is,” Stokes said. “It’s obviously very, very disappointing.”Related

  • Cricket must be played by the rules, not Stokes' moral code

  • Akash Deep likely to replace Bumrah for Oval Test

England refused to reveal the exact nature of the injury, but it is understood that Stokes has sustained a grade-three tear in a shoulder muscle and that his recovery will take at least six weeks. He was not scheduled to play any more cricket this summer, and is confident that he will be fully recovered ahead of England’s first Ashes Test in Australia on November 21.Stokes bowled 11 overs on the final day of the Manchester Test but grimaced throughout his two spells. He repeatedly clutched his shoulder while bowling and said afterwards that he was “very unlikely” to miss the fifth Test despite struggling with a biceps tendon injury, but woke up feeling “pretty sore” the following morning and scans confirmed a significant tear. His absence is a major blow for England, and for Stokes personally: he is the leading wicket-taker in the series with 17, scored his first Test century in two years in Manchester, has been named Player of the Match in the last two Tests, and his injury represents yet another frustrating setback after two hamstring tears in the second half of last year.Stokes insisted he could not have prevented the injury. “When I’m out on the field, I play to win and give everything I possibly can,” he said. “If I feel there’s a moment in a game where I need to put everything I’m feeling aside, I’ll do that because of how much this team means to me, how much playing for England means to me, how much winning means to me.”Jacob Bethell has found a spot in the XI for the final Test•PA Photos/Getty Images

He also suggested that playing at The Oval could have aggravated the injury to a worrying extent. “It was risk-reward,” Stokes said. “I’ll always try to push myself as much as I possibly can. There’s absolutely nothing I could have done [differently] before. Being a professional sportsman, injuries are part of this game and I can’t do anything about that.”England were planning to head into the fifth Test without a specialist spinner as soon as it became clear that Stokes would not be fit to bowl. Dawson bowled economically in Manchester but failed to take a wicket in 47 second-innings overs, and England are expecting a match dominated by seamers at The Oval, with a healthy covering of live grass on the pitch on Wednesday morning.”The Oval generally plays that it’s your seamers who take the wickets,” Stokes said. “We felt that, here, that gives you the best chance of winning the game. The way it’s played here through the year in the Championship as well: it’s looked very similar to this, and played like that. There’s a bit of intel there, and we wanted to give ourselves four seamers.”Stokes’ absence means Bethell will bat at No. 6, having scored three half-centuries at No. 3 in his maiden series in New Zealand last year. “Being the type of player that he is, where he plays all three formats, it probably allows him to be a bit more versatile with where he bats in the order,” Stokes said. “I’m very confident in his ability. He’s a quality player.”England’s seam attack is their biggest area of concern. Woakes has never bowled more overs in a series than the 167 he has got through over the past month, while Atkinson returns from a hamstring injury that had ruled him out since May. Overton wins his second cap, and first for three years, and Tongue is back after missing out for Archer in the third and fourth Tests.Stokes will remain with the squad this week, as he did last year when he missed four Tests – three against Sri Lanka, and one in Pakistan – through injury. Pope, his vice-captain, will again stand in on his home ground and will look to Shubman Gill for inspiration after struggling to “compartmentalise” his two roles when he deputised last year.”We know that the series is still on the line here,” Stokes said. “It’s been toe-to-toe throughout the whole series so far. We know that India will be coming out fighting, because they don’t want to leave England with a loss. The next best thing for them is a draw, so we’ll be doing everything in our powers to not let that happen.”

Hathurusingha returns as Bangladesh men's team head coach

Chandika Hathurusingha has returned to the Bangladesh men’s national team as its head coach. Not long after Cricket New South Wales confirmed that Hathurusingha had parted ways with them, the BCB announced a two-year deal starting next month. It has, however, not been confirmed which formats Hathurusingha would be in charge of, with S Sriram also around and at the helm of the T20I side.ESPNcricinfo understands that discussions about the roadmap between Sriram and the BCB in Dhaka earlier this month didn’t provide clear answers. But the board had said in December last year that it wants Sriram to be the long-term T20I head coach. If that remains true, Hathurusingha might only be connected with the Test and ODI sides.Related

“It’s an honour to have been given this opportunity to coach the Bangladesh national team once again,” Hathurusingha said in a statement. “I really loved the warmth of the people and the culture of Bangladesh. I’m looking forward to working with the players once again and enjoying their successes.”This is 54-year-old Hathurusingha’s second stint with Bangladesh after he had served as the head coach from 2014 to 2017. That included Bangladesh’s famous ODI series-winning streak at home, that included beating Pakistan, India and South Africa in consecutive months. Under Hathurusingha, the team also made the knockout stages of ICC events at the ODI World Cup in 2015 and the Champions Trophy in 2017, and also recorded their first Test wins against England, Australia and Sri Lanka.

BCB: Hathurusingha ‘a proven tactician’

During Hathurusingha’s time with the team, Bangladesh had a 40.20% success rate in 102 matches across formats. For the record, that’s lower than what his successors – and now predecessors – Steve Rhodes (51.11) and Russell Domingo (42.34) achieved.”Chandika’s experience and knowledge of Bangladesh cricket will be an advantage for him and will benefit the players,” BCB chief executive Nizamuddin Chowdhury said. “He is a proven tactician and we have seen his impact on the national team during his first assignment.”Following his time with Bangladesh, Hathurusingha went back to Sri Lanka, his home country, and took charge as the head coach of the national men’s team there, before moving to New South Wales in July 2020.

Man City player ratings vs Bournemouth: Omar Marmoush, stop that – striker's rocket turbo-charges Pep Guardiola's side top-five bid but Kevin De Bruyne flops in farwell game with terrible open goal miss

The Egyptian's bolt from the blue was a late contender for goal of the season but the departing De Bruyne failed to leave with a bang

This was supposed to be all about Kevin De Bruyne but Omar Marmoush made it all about himself with a truly stunning goal which kickstarted his team-mate's farewell party and put Manchester City on track for a top-five finish as they beat Bournemouth 3-1.

Marmoush let fly from 40 yards with a blistering strike which flew in off the post to give City a deserved lead after they made a rampant start, looking to make amends for losing the FA Cup final to Crystal Palace. It was a goal that De Bruyne would have been proud of but the Belgian will be cursing the fact he could not leave with a goal, especially after hitting the crossbar after being presented with an open goal.

Evanilson nearly punished City down the other end before Bernardo Silva scored the second after a brilliant piece of play from Ilkay Gundogan. Mateo Kovacic was sent off for City for hauling down Evanilson but Lewis Cook was then also dismissed for a brutal foul on Nico Gonzalez.

The midfielder shook off the challenge to score City's third, which came after Rodri had come off the bench to make his first appearance after tearing his knee ligaments back in September. Daniel Jebbinson scored a consolation goal for Bournemouth in injury time but it could not puncture the celebratory mood as City bid farewell to their greatest player ever and practically booked their place in next season's Champions League in the process.

GOAL rates Man City's players from the Etihad Stadium…

AFPGoalkeeper & Defence

Ederson (4/10):

Played with fire when he casually sent the ball straight to Marcus Tavernier and was grateful to Dias for blocking the shot. Made an early straightforward save from Justin Kluivert but should have done better with Jebbinson's late goal.

Matheus Nunes (6/10):

Gave City the width they badly lacked at Wembley which helped pin the visitors back. Had a wayward strike, trying and failing to replicate Marmoush's worldie.

Ruben Dias (6/10):

Made a silly early mistake when he gave the ball to Evanilson. Partly compensated for it with his brave block on Tavernier, bailing out Ederson. But then he was too slow and too weak to stop Jebbinson scoring at the end.

Manuel Akanji (6/10):

More comfortable back in central defence than at right-back at Wembley.

Josko Gvardiol (5/10):

Had a positive first half and involved in City's frequent attacks down the left side. Loses marks for his hospital pass which forced Kovacic to take out Evanilson, getting sent off for his efforts.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportMidfield

Kevin De Bruyne (5/10):

It must have been an emotional night for him but the truth is the occasion got to him. Or he was still tired from Saturday. Either way, he signed off with a rusty display. Only he will know how he missed the open goal and his passing was sloppy. His best moment was his cross for Haaland.

Mateo Kovacic (6/10):

Gave City the midfield control they lacked in the final. He was not far from scoring in the first half in a front-footed display. But he loses marks for getting sent off, even if Gvardiol was largely to blame for putting him in the situation.

Bernardo Silva (8/10):

Gave a battling performance which backed up his fighting talk after the final. Also got the all-important second goal after his team-mates kept missing sitters.

Ilkay Gundogan (8/10):

Conjured a lovely piece of skill to set up the second goal. Moved the ball around thoughtfully throughout, suggesting he could have had a bigger impact in the final had he started.

Getty ImagesAttack

Omar Marmoush (8/10):

What a way to respond to his penalty miss in the final. His goal was one part awesome quality, the other sheer audacity. Each time it was replayed on the big screen, the crowd's coos got louder.

Erling Haaland (5/10):

Couldn't get a goal from a De Bruyne assist, which is what the crowd wanted. It nearly came when the Belgian curled in a high cross to the back post but he opted to throw his foot into the air rather than head it and bungled the opportunity. His hold-up play was also lacking.

Subs & Manager

Nico Gonzalez (6/10):

Got a brutal introduction to the game when Cook clattered into him. Did well to shake off the pain and score his first Premier League goal.

Rodri (N/A):

The crowd's roar when he came on said it all. How they have missed their lynchpin this season. And he extended his unbeaten run in the Premier League to 36 games.

Oscar Bobb (N/A):

Brought on in added time.

Jeremy Doku (N/A):

Another late adition.

Jack Grealish (N/A):

Came on in added time for what should be and probably will be his final appearance at the Etihad Stadium

Pep Guardiola (7/10):

Picked a suitable line-up this time, restoring natural holding midfielders. His team were dominant and he used his substitutions to give De Bruyne the ovation he deserved, give Rodri the comeback reception he deserved and to give Grealish one last smattering of minutes.

Wyatt's 'terrifying experience' on cable car going up Table mountain

Moonda: Big crowd expected at Newlands for Women’s World Cup semi-final

England are targeting a calm performance in their Women’s T20 World Cup semi-final against South Africa on Friday, but opening batter Danni Wyatt’s nerves were frayed in the lead-up during an incident involving a cable car she was travelling in down Table Mountain.Wyatt revealed during a pre-match press conference in Cape Town on Thursday that a cable car she was travelling in while descending the peak on Wednesday afternoon “decided to drop a little bit and swung”.Related

Members of the England Women’s team were queuing for the cable cars, which transport visitors up and down the 1,086m mountain, when they saw one stop on its way up, which Wyatt said had made her “nervous”. It was shortly after Wyatt and Sophia Dunkley had boarded a car to descend that the incident occurred, stemming from a technical problem with a hydraulic back-up motor used to operate the cars when power to the usual electric motor is cut during load shedding. South Africa has been increasingly hit by load shedding, where the power supply is rationed to different areas throughout the day and night because demand outweighs capacity.”Going back down yesterday, there were a few technical issues that made me very nervous before we boarded the cable car,” Wyatt said. “And then it decided to drop a little bit and swung. It was a very terrifying experience. I don’t think I’ll be going up that mountain again anytime soon.”Wyatt said it wasn’t her first visit to Table Mountain, having been there “about seven years ago” but the incident on her latest visit had put her off returning.Danni Wyatt: ‘I’m not going on that cable car ever again. Well, literally everyone. A lot of people were shaking.”Wahida Parker, managing director of the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company, said: “Table Mountain Cableway Company uses a hydraulic back-up motor during load shedding that replaces the electric motor that operates our cars and their movement. This motor experienced a technical problem on Wednesday, which caused our cars to get stuck on the line.”We adopted two approaches simultaneously to resolve the problem. Our technicians worked to find the fault so that we could get moving as soon as possible, while at the same time, we contacted the City of Cape Town to ask that the power to our area be restored so that we could bring our passengers down safely and quickly.”We pride ourselves on providing visitors with a positive and enjoyable experience, and what happened on Wednesday is not what we aim for. We sincerely regret the experience that passengers had who were stuck in our cars. We are happy to confirm that all the passengers safely reached the upper and lower stations.”
