'Mexico inspires no one' – El Tri's unexpectedly narrow Gold Cup-opening win over Domican Republic sparks harsh criticism

Mexico’s 3–2 win over the Dominican Republic in their 2025 Gold Cup opener Saturday night sparked sharp media criticism, with several prominent analysts and former coaches expressing concern about the national team’s performance under Javier Aguirre.

Despite the result, many pointed to a lack of identity, intensity, and tactical coherence against an opponent ranked 139th in the world.

“You can’t allow this to happen. Mexico didn’t impose itself on the Dominican Republic at all – they let them do whatever they wanted,” said José Luis Sánchez Solá said on ESPN’s utbol Picante. “There wasn’t a single clear chance in the first half. I loved what the Dominican Republic did. Mexico frustrated me. This team isn’t working."

Fellow analyst and coach Mario Carrillo agreed, stressing the lack of basic tactical structure and saying, “Mexico must improve tactically. Today, you have to know how to move the ball, create triangles, and manage possession – especially against teams that run a lot. This is CONCACAF. This is the Gold Cup."

Francisco Gabriel de Anda offered a more optimistic but still cautious take, saying: “Aguirre should already have a core lineup with the World Cup less than a year away. You can't still be testing players. I’m optimistic, but he should have 60 percent of the squad defined by now.”

He added that dismissing opponents based on perceived quality is a dangerous mindset: “It’s not always about whether the opponent is too weak or too strong. Mexico won, but it wasn’t convincing.”

On FOX Sports, Cristian “Chaco” Giménez, father of striker Santiago Giménez, noted that Aguirre "adjusted the team’s structure at halftime due to dissatisfaction with the first-half display."

Eduardo de la Torre, a former executive and analyst, criticized Mexico’s offensive setup: “Aguirre has to choose between Raúl Jiménez and Santiago Giménez – this team needs to play with a single striker.”

Rubén Rodríguez, also on FOX, was blunt in his assessment: “Much of what the Dominican Republic accomplished was because Mexico allowed it. There was a huge gap in midfield. The team was reactive, not proactive. That’s something Aguirre never addressed. If the goal is to win, fine – but this team doesn’t function

David Faitelson of TUDN echoed that sentiment: “Less than a year from the World Cup, Mexico inspires no one – absolutely no one. There’s no identity, no style. What we saw today was very poor against a team with limited ability. In the end, Mexico was begging for the final whistle.”

AdvertisementGetty Images SportWHAT JAVIER AGUIRRE SAID

After the game, Aguirre acknowledged his team was pushed to the limit by an opponent he admitted surprised him.

They stuck to a 5-4-1, and did it well," he said. "It was an attractive game for the fans. There are things to correct -we could’ve scored more, but credit to the opponent. They have players in Europe, they’ve grown a lot. They were clinical. Malagón didn’t face too many shots, but the ones he did came from silly plays that led to goals. It could’ve been 3-0, but then it was 3-1, 3-2… and we were on edge again. We played with intensity, but the opponent took us to the limit."

Aguirre has won eight of his 13 matches in his current stint as head coach of the national Team.

Raúl Jiménez reached 40 goals with El Tri, putting him just six behind Jared Borgetti (46) for second place on Mexico’s all-time scoring list. Javier “Chicharito” Hernández remains the national team’s top scorer with 52 goals.

SA in player availability conundrum for NZ Tests as T20 leagues encroach on bilateral commitments

The two-Test series, which will begin on February 4 in Tauranga, will currently clash with the latter stages of the SA20

The increasing encroachment of T20 leagues on the international calendar could force South Africa to seek a postponement or field a second-string side on next year’s tour to New Zealand. The two-Test series, which will begin on February 4 in Tauranga, will clash with the latter stages of the SA20, South Africa’s T20 franchise competition, and will present Cricket South Africa (CSA) with a conundrum over player availability.A significant proportion of South Africa’s Test players, including captain Temba Bavuma, new Durban Super Giants captain Keshav Maharaj and the entire frontline pace pack – Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Lungi Ngidi and Marco Jansen – are contracted to teams in the SA20 and will either have to miss parts of the tournament or opt out of the Tests, with the latter more likely.Although South Africa’s players are contractually bound to both CSA and the SA20, CSA has guaranteed the SA20 first rights to the players over the January window and as such, the players will be obliged to play for their franchises rather than the national team. It is, therefore, almost certain that South Africa will have to send a makeshift Test side to New Zealand. CSA’s CEO Pholetsi Moseki told ESPNcricinfo that the organisation will have a better idea of which players are available for the Tests, “after the SA20 mini-auction in September,” and that they are still trying to have the New Zealand Tests moved. The 2023-2027 FTP, which was made public in August last year, had South Africa scheduled to play two Tests in New Zealand in February 2024. NZC announced the fixtures this week which confirmed matches from February 4 to 17. Given the distance and time difference, CSA plans to send their Test squad to New Zealand about a week in advance, which will be around January 28 but would have preferred to send them at least a week later, at the conclusion of the SA20.The SA20 will begin in the week of January 7, after India’s tour to South Africa, and should end around February 4. Ideally, CSA would have wanted the New Zealand Tests to be held from mid-February, but NZC was unable to accede to that because they are also due to host Australia, whose players need to be free by late March for the IPL. The three T20I and two-Test series against Australia runs from February 21 to March 12, while the IPL is understood to be pencilled in for after March 20 at the earliest.South Africa forfeited the three ODIs against Australia earlier this year to play in the SA20 instead•SA20

CSA has also asked NZC to consider hosting the Tests during the IPL, in April, which would impact player availability for both sides, but this request could not be accommodated. Both CSA and NZC have players contracted to the IPL, though in South Africa’s case it is far fewer than those who will be involved at the SA20. CSA maintains that they are still trying to find an alternative window to propose to NZC but “if you look at the FTP – there’s nowhere to move the matches because we need to complete the WTC cycle by 2025,” Moseki said.Asked if South Africa, who only play two-Test series for the entire 2023-2025 WTC cycle, would consider forfeiting the matches, Moseki said they “want to avoid cancelling matches because we are aware of our bilateral obligations,” but also admitted “the SA20 is too important,” to jeopardise. The SA20 turned a profit in its first year and CSA is hedging the game’s financial future on the event which is why they have reneged on an international before. South Africa did not play three ODIs against Australia earlier this year in order to launch the SA20 with all their players available and as such, put themselves in a tough position on the World Cup Super League table.Despite making that concession, the first season of the SA20 still faced scheduling difficulties. A World Cup Super League series against England had to be sandwiched into the tournament window and it had to move out of the Cape Town, Paarl and Port Elizabeth in order for those venues to ready themselves for the Women’s T20 World Cup. As a result, the SA20 started off in the Western and Eastern Cape before fixtures were held up-country and on the east coast, and took an eight-day break after 22 matches to accommodate for the England ODIs.The organisers were hoping for a smoother schedule this time around but, because of the clash with the New Zealand series, will have to wait until 2025 for that. Moseki said CSA has ensured there are no future issues in the SA20 window for the remainder of the ongoing FTP. However, South Africa are due to host Pakistan for two Tests, three ODIs and three T20Is deep into January in 2025, West Indies for five T20Is in January 2026 and England for three Tests, three ODIs and three T20Is in early 2027.NZC has been contacted for comment.

£165k-per-week star determined to quit Tottenham after talks with his camp

Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou is facing the prospect of a key squad member being tempted away from N17 this summer, with the Spurs star now believed to be seriously keen on an exit before next season.

After a lacklustre temporary spell in north London, RB Leipzig loanee Timo Werner is set to return to his parent club at the end of the season, with the Lilywhites and chairman Daniel Levy electing not to trigger the £8.5 million buy option in his contract.

Meanwhile, out-of-contract trio Sergio Reguilon, Alfie Whiteman and Fraser Forster are all set to leave Hotspur Way on free deals this summer, as their contracts tick down towards expiry on June 30.

Richarlison could also be sold by Tottenham, according to reports, following a season blighted by injuries for the Brazilian. Everton are believed to be expressing an interest in re-signing their former star striker, as per GiveMeSport, and Levy could take a £20 million loss on Richarlison by letting him go for around £40 million.

The likes of Manor Solomon and Bryan Gil, who have both enjoyed productive stints away from Spurs, on loan at Leeds United and Girona respectively, are also reportedly unlikely to be donning Lilywhites colours for the 2025/2026 season.

There is also the prospect of elite sides attempting to prise Postecoglou’s star players away, following what has been a disappointing second campaign in charge for the Tottenham boss.

Now, Diego Simeone’s Atlético Madrid are becoming seriously linked with a move for £165,000-per-week defender Cristian Romero.

Sky Sports reported this week that Atletico hold an interest in signing Romero this summer, with the Argentine believed to be a credible target for the La Liga side ahead of next campaign.

Tottenham defender Cristian Romero

Some outlets have previously claimed that Levy could demand as much as £150 million to sell Romero, which may well be out of Atletico’s price range, but perhaps the centre-back himself could force through a move.

Cristian Romero determined to quit Tottenham after talks with his camp

As per reports from Spain, Romero “will do everything he can” to leave Tottenham this summer, and Atlético have already held talks with the South American’s camp as they ponder a move.

The 26-year-old is apparently ready to do his part in an attempt to seal a move away from north London, but it will also require a “significant investment” from Atlético, which Tottenham will demand if they even entertain the possibility of selling their crucial defender.

Simeone’s side appear determined, though, as they “dream” of striking a deal for Romero and luring him to the Wanda Metropolitano.

The former Atalanta star has been unable to exert his influence on the Spurs backline akin to last season, having spent the vast majority of this campaign sidelined through injury alongside partner Micky van de Ven. However, when fit and available, there is no denying he would be a sore miss and very difficult to replace.

Prithvi Shaw signs with Northamptonshire

India batter to play the remainder of the County Championship and also the Royal London One-Day Cup

ESPNcricinfo staff01-Jul-2023India batter Prithvi Shaw has secured a deal with Northamptonshire to play the remainder of the County Cricket season in England and also be a part of the Royal London One-Day Cup which starts in August. The 23-year-old is expected to join them at the end of the Duleep Trophy.Shaw is part of a strong West Zone side which is tipped to make it all the way to the final of the Duleep Trophy scheduled between July 12 and 16. He may have fallen down the pecking order for India but remains a prolific run-scorer for his state side, Mumbai, in all formats of the game. Shaw hasn’t played any first-class cricket for six months but he did make a career-best 379 off just 383 balls in a Ranji Trophy game against Assam in January 2023.The ability to score runs quickly is a big reason for Shaw’s rise through the ranks since winning the Under-19 World Cup for India in 2018. He had a stunning introduction to Test cricket, scoring a century on debut, but has since then struggled to deal with the quality of bowling on offer in international red-ball cricket. He played his last game as a first-choice pick for India in 2020 and only managed to get back when they had to send a second-string side to Sri Lanka in 2021.Most recently, Shaw was part of the Delhi Capitals in IPL 2023. He went through a six-game stretch where he was unable to score more than 15 runs which led to his being dropped there as well. He did return later in the tournament and immediately struck a half-century.Northamptonshire play in Division One of the English County Championship. They have won just one out of seven games so far and have seven more until the end of the season. This will be Shaw’s first time playing domestic cricket in the UK. He will become the fifth Indian to be part of the 2022-23 season following Cheteshwar Pujara (Sussex), Ajinkya Rahane (Leicestershire), Arshdeep Singh (Kent) and Navdeep Saini (Worcestershire).Shaw is a very attractive package in white-ball cricket, where hitting through the line of the ball is much easier. He is approaching 3000 List A runs at an average of 52.54 and a strike-rate of 123.27 with eight centuries, one of which is a double. Former India opener Gautam Gambhir, in 2022, had even tipped him to lead the country at some point in the future.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Broja has gone from being a highly-rated Chelsea academy product, who was valued at around £50m ($67.5m) just 18 months ago, to one who is seemingly surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge. The Albania international has had two unfruitful loans at Fulham and Everton, and now it seems a Blues departure is likely. Incidentally, team-mate Axel Disasi could also be heading for the exit.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Despite impressing on loan at Vitesse and Southampton, where he scored 20 goals in two seasons, Broja has found the net just 23 times in 132 matches in his career at club level. He also failed to score in 19 combined appearances at Fulham and Everton and has just three goals in 38 Chelsea games.

It remains to be seen if anyone will bid that much for Broja, who still has three years left on his contract at Stamford Bridge, or if Chelsea will have to lower their asking price to get him off their books.

Depleted Kent gain foothold through on-loan batters

Injury-kit Kent finished on 102 for 2 in reply to Nottinghamshire’s 350 all out on a rain-hit second day of their LV= Insurance County Championship clash at Trent Bridge. No play was possible after tea. With 10 first-team players either injured or unavailable, Jack Leaning’s Kent side included two batters signed on emergency loan and another brought out of red-ball ‘retirement’ with the county’s resources so stretched. After Ben Slater’s opening-day century, wicketkeeper Tom Moores made 94 as Nottinghamshire secured three batting points, 20-year-old Jas Singhfinishing with 4 for 87 as Kent collected three for bowling. Both teams – Kent in particular – will feel happier with a win here ahead of the break for the Metro Bank One-Day Cup as they seek to preserve their Division One status.Brett Hutton, the Championship’s leading wicket-taker, bagged his 46th scalp of the season when he dismissed former Nottinghamshire team-mate Ben Compton, which makes this the most successful campaign of his career, beating the 45 wickets he collected for Northamptonshire in Division Two in 2018.Related

On the basis of day one, when Kent’s bowlers could have made more of a helpful pitch, the 75 runs Nottinghamshire were able to add to their overnight score in similarly tricky conditions looked to have put them in a good position. The only negative amid their morning’s work was that Moores, unbeaten on 72 overnight and eyeing up a first hundred in a first-class match since August 2020, fell six runs short, edging a catch to gully as a decent ball from Matt Quinn squared him up a touch. His 49-run partnership with Lyndon James had just secured a second batting point. After Kent had taken the second new ball at the start of play, James, who made 36, was caught at second slip after Calvin Harrison had been taken at first and Hutton caught behind as conditions continued to aid the seamers. It had been a decent morning for the makeshift Kent attack, certainly, compared with the first day. Singh, a right-armer who has come though the Kent academy, finished with four wickets in an innings for the second time in only his sixth first-class match.Getting close to Nottinghamshire’s score looked a fairly formidable task for a Kent batting line-up that is even more patched up than their bowling attack. Toby Albert and Ben Geddes, making their debuts on loan from Hampshire and Surrey respectively, arrived with only six first-class appearances between them; Alex Blake, on a white-ball only contract since 2020, is appearing in a first-class match for the first time since July 2019.At tea, nonetheless, they were making a pretty decent fist of their reply, having negotiated a 36-over session with only two losses. Compton was leg-before to a swinging delivery from Hutton, but Albert, a 21-year-old right-hander who batted at No. 3 in Hampshire’s Vitality Blast side, batted nicely for his 37 in only his second first-class match before falling to a good catch by Harrison at second slip.Albert’s loose drive provided a comeback wicket for Luke Fletcher, playing for the first time in the Championship since early May after undergoing surgery for an ankle spur, although the local favourite began limping noticeably soon afterwards and had to leave the field two balls into his 10th over, which will be of concern to Nottinghamshire skipper Steven Mullaney.Geddes also impressed. Another 21-year-old, he posted his maiden first-class century against Kent last summer before being made captain of a young Surrey side in the One-Day Cup. He was unbeaten on 36 out of 102 for 2 at tea before the weather closed in.
