ECB defends dip in Blast attendances as Finals Day feels schedule squeeze

The ECB have insisted they are “committed to driving progress and increasing the reach” of the Vitality Blast after the competition’s 20th season saw a 15 percent decline in ticket sales compared to pre-pandemic numbers. The Blast’s 2022 season concludes with Finals Day at Edgbaston on Saturday, which will be the competition’s earliest-ever finish. The Blast has been squeezed into a shorter window at the start of the summer in order to accommodate the month-long window for the Hundred, which starts on August 3.Several counties were unhappy about their fixture lists, with many games taking place on week-nights during term-time, and ESPNcricinfo understands that the total attendance figure for the tournament will be around 800,000 – including a sell-out crowd at Edgbaston on Saturday. That figure is down from around 920,000 in 2019, the most recent Blast season in which full crowds were permitted. The 2020 season was played behind-closed-doors in its entirety, while full crowds only returned for the knockout stages in 2021.”After the impact of Covid and the restrictions that were in place for two summers, in addition to the changing consumer habits that has impacted other sports and entertainment, it has been heartening to see crowds returning up and down the country,” Neil Snowball, the ECB’s managing director of county cricket, wrote in a blog post.”We are undergoing research to further understand the changing consumer habits and how we can develop the Vitality Blast’s offer to fans. What is certain is that there has never been more ways to watch and follow the Vitality Blast, whether it is at-venue or across the various digital platforms, and we’re committed to driving progress and increasing the reach of a competition that has become much loved since its inception in 2003.”The Vitality Blast is a short-format competition unlike any other, partly due to age-old county rivalries that play out every year across the country. Over the years, all 18 first-class counties have established their own rich history in a competition that continues to attract top players from across the world and also provide a stage for homegrown players to develop their skills.”Related

There has been controversy surrounding the non-availability of six England players for Finals Day in Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow, David Willey (all Yorkshire), Jos Buttler, Liam Livingstone (both Lancashire) and Craig Overton (Somerset), who will be playing in Sunday’s deciding third ODI against India instead. The ECB were forced to reschedule the white-ball leg of the India series due to the postponement of the fifth Test last summer, prompting the clash between Finals Day and the end of the ODI series, but Tom Abell, Somerset’s captain, said that the occasion would not be “diminished in any way” by their absence.”The Blast can still take pride of place,” Abell said. “If there are really good games in the Blast, that creates huge interest and excitement around the competition in itself. Everyone really buys in and you really see the passion for it. If you’re getting good sides playing against each other, that fuels the passion for the T20 Blast and for county cricket.”Tim David, Lancashire’s overseas player, said it was “frustrating” to be without several England players. “Personally, I think it’s disappointing when you have clashes with international fixtures,” he said. “As a team, of course you want your best players available – but it happens everywhere. You have fixture clashes. I think it can be done better but I’m not going to offer any solutions at this stage.”Obviously there is some really high-quality stuff happening in the Blast but there’s also some different challenges with the scheduling and the number of teams,” David added. “It’s a different intensity to other tournaments: guys will be off playing a four-day game and then the next day, they’ve got a T20 match. It’s certainly a different challenge to franchise tournaments.”Five venues reported record T20 attendances this season: Edgbaston, Taunton, the Ageas Bowl, New Road and Grace Road, where Leicestershire reaped the benefits after deciding to cut their prices significantly midway through the group stages. “Last week’s quarter-finals attracted a combined 42,000 spectators – the most ever for the last-eight stage,” Snowball said. The new TV deal signed between the ECB and Sky Sports this week includes a 50 percent increase in the number of televised group-stage games, as well as a weekly highlights show on free-to-air television. Snowball said that the deal “reiterates the value and importance that is placed” on the Blast and “reflects the loyalty and passion fans have for it”.

Gray 2.0: Spurs looking to sign "sensational" star who’s outscoring Solanke

The unpredictability of Tottenham Hotspur’s campaign has continued into the new year in full force.

In just two weeks, Ange Postecoglou’s side have lost at home to Newcastle United, beat the incredible Liverpool in the first leg of their League Cup semi-final, and then required extra time to beat fifth-tier strugglers Tamworth Town in the FA Cup.

However, with progress being made in two cup competitions, the mood in N17 is more positive than it was last week, and in yet more encouraging developments, the summer signings of Dominic Solanke, Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray continue to prove their worth and the manager right.

So, recent reports linking the club with a striker currently outscoring Solanke in a move reminiscent of Gray’s should excite the fans.

Tottenham Hotspur chase free-scoring forward

According to a recent report from Spain, Tottenham are interested in West Bromwich Albion’s inform marksman, Josh Maja.

Alongside the Lilywhites, the report has revealed that fierce rivals and fellow Premier League giants Chelsea are also keen on the 26-year-old forward this month.

While competition from the free-spending Blues is far from ideal for the North Londoners, the good news is that, per the report, the former Sunderland ace is valued at around £15m, which for a backup striker is a fee the club could easily justify.

It might be a complicated transfer to get over the line, but given Maja’s form this season and Spurs’ need for a backup to Solanke, it’s one worth pursuing, especially as there are parallels to Gray’s move in the summer.

How Maja compares to Solanke and Gray

Okay, so before we look at Maja’s form this season and how he stacks up to the man he could be competing with if he were to join Spurs, Solanke, let’s explore the main parallel between his potential move and Gray’s.

The most significant similarity is that, like with the teenager’s transfer, the North Londoners would be swooping in for one of the best players in a promotion-chasing Championship side.

Granted, the potential upside of the 26-year-old forward is far smaller than with the teenage star, but as he is currently West Brom’s top-scorer, he is arguably even more important to them than the Englishman was to Leeds United.

With that out the way, how has the Lewisham-born poacher’s season stacked up to Solanke’s this year?

Well, in just 26 appearances for the Baggies, totalling 2077 minutes, the “sensational” striker, as dubbed by Nigerian football writer Samm Audu, has found the back of the net on 12 occasions, which comes out to an average of a goal every 2.16 games, or every 173 minutes.

In contrast, Postecoglou’s starting centre-forward has found the back of the net on 11 occasions in 28 appearances, totalling 2158 minutes, meaning he is currently averaging a goal every 2.54 games, or every 196.18 minutes.

Now, while that comparison certainly paints the Nigerian international in a brilliant light, it’s important to add that the former Bournemouth star has also provided six assists to his two this term and that the Englishman is operating in a far more challenging league.

However, even with that added context, Maja’s performances this season have been seriously impressive, and while he shouldn’t be looked upon as an upgrade for Solanke, he’d almost certainly be a useful backup, especially as Richarlison continues to suffer from injury setback after injury setback.

Therefore, so long as the price remains at £15m, Daniel Levy and Co should look to bring the West Brom ace to N17, as he’d be a valuable squad player, and the last signing they made from the Championship is settling into the team nicely.

"Astonishing" 29 y/o West Brom ace has "little chance" of facing Preston

An “astonishing” West Brom player has “little chance” of being fit to face Preston North End on New Year’s Day, according to journalist Lewis Cox.

Latest West Brom news

The Baggies picked up their first positive result without Carlos Corberan in charge on Sunday, as they battled their way to a 1-1 draw away to rivals Sheffield United in the Championship. Having fallen behind, Karlan Grant responded just before half-time.

The search is now on to find Corberan’s successor, with West Brom desperately hoping his exit doesn’t rock their promotion charge, and a number of potential candidates have already been mentioned as possible replacements.

West Bromwich Albion manager Carlos Corberan.

Liverpool first-team coach John Heitinga is seen as a front-runner to come in at the Hawthorns, despite no doubt enjoying life alongside Arne Slot this season, helping the Reds top the Premier League table. The Dutchman managed Ajax for a stint last year and may be keen to lead a team again.

Heitinga isn’t the only individual who has been linked with the vacant West Brom job, however, with Mark Robins backed to come in and lead the troops, having tasted victory against the Baggies twice in the past. He recently suffered a shock sacking at Coventry City and is likely to be keen to return to management. Away from the manager situation at the Hawthorns, the Championship club have now suffered an injury blow ahead of their return to action.

Injury blow for "astonishing" West Brom ace

According to Cox on X, West Brom midfielder Alex Mowatt has “little chance” of facing Preston, having picked up an injury against Derby County on Boxing Day.

Not having Mowatt available for the home clash with Preston to start 2025 would be an undoubted blow for West Brom, even though they did well without him against the Blades. The 29-year-old is an influential performer with so much quality in the middle of the park, bagging four goals and two assists in the Championship this season and being lauded by Sky Sports commentator Gary Taphouse in the past.

If Mowatt does miss out on New Year’s Day, as is expected, the hope is that his absence is still only a short-term one and that he is back for the trip to Swansea City on Saturday afternoon.

England women's player ratings vs Belgium: Lucy Bronze and Beth Mead are some combo! Lionesses stars provide deadly link-up to propel Sarina Wiegman's side to top spot in Nations League group

Aggie Beever-Jones and Keira Walsh also bagged their first senior international goals in a huge win for the reigning European champions

England's Lionesses cruised to a comfortable 5-0 win over Belgium on Friday night to rise to the top of their Women's Nations League group and continue their undefeated start to 2025. Goals from Lucy Bronze, Millie Bright, Aggie Beever-Jones, Jess Park and Keira Walsh secured all three points for Sarina Wiegman's side on an evening of dominance, with the European champions unlucky not to be victorious by an even greater margin after Alessia Russo twice hit the same post in the first half.

Belgium have caused England problems in the past, beating them in the previous edition of the Nations League after the 2023 Women's World Cup, but while they were by no means terrible on this occasion, they struggled to create much against a sturdy and locked-in Lionesses defence, which set a solid foundation for plenty of positive things further up the pitch. It was midway through the first half when Bronze deservedly broke the deadlock from a fantastic Lauren James cross and then the full-back turned provider before the break, as her header was pounced on by Bright to double that advantage.

Though in a comfortable enough lead, England's pressure didn't relent after the interval. A brilliant cross from Mead gave half-time substitute Beever-Jones the chance to really make sure of the win, with her showcasing great movement and providing a clinical finish for her first senior international goal. Jess Park, another introduction from the bench, made it four after some superb pressing and, having seen Nicky Evrard tip a fantastic effort of hers onto the post earlier, Walsh joined Beever-Jones in finding the back of the net for the first time for the Lionesses when her deflected effort put the cherry on the cake late on.

Had great chemistry with a back four that featured three club-mates, resulting in some good defensive efforts between them and some solid distribution. Didn't have any real saves to make.

Great at both ends of the pitch, covering well at the back while offering a real threat going forward. Deserved her goal.

    Leah Williamson (7/10):

Moved the ball consistently well and was defensively solid throughout.

Reacted well when needed in her own box and was great in possession. Brave to throw herself at Bronze's header to get on the scoresheet.

    Niamh Charles (7/10):

Covered well in defence, played some classy passes to kickstart promising attacks and finally got her first England goal late on, having come so close to it a few minutes earlier.

On at the break, taking James' place on the left. Was a really lively introduction and showed fantastic movement to get on the end of Mead's cross for a first England goal.

    Jess Park (6/10):

Was relatively quiet until she pounced onto a huge opportunity to make it 4-0 and clinically took it.

    Esme Morgan (N/A):

Slotted into the centre of defence for the final 15 minutes.

    Nikita Parris (N/A):

Continued her international renaissance with another appearance in the latter stages.

    Jess Carter (N/A):

Gave former Chelsea team-mate Bright a deserved rest for the final 10 minutes.

    Sarina Wiegman (8/10):

Didn't underestimate a Belgium team that have caused England real problems in the past, choosing essentially her best XI. They delivered a top performance and her substitutes were impactful, too. A great night.

Leeds hit gold selling star who Bielsa thought was "immense" when he joined

Marcelo Bielsa is the man who finally ended Leeds United’s Premier League exile back in 2020 after a 16-year absence from England’s top flight.

The Argentine gave a generation of supporters memories that will undoubtedly last a lifetime, with his style of play catching the eye, making it impossible to live with, leading to their eventual promotion.

However, that was only part of the 69-year-old’s success, establishing the Whites’ top division status after achieving a ninth-placed finish and looking as though they could build towards a European place the following campaign.

Former Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa.

It wouldn’t last for the experienced manager, eventually being sacked halfway through his second season in the Premier League and replaced by American Jesse Marsch.

Bielsa would leave the former RB Leipzig boss with an impressive squad to work with at Elland Road, highlighting the excellent business he did in the market during his time in charge of the club.

Bielsa’s best signings at Leeds

One real reason behind Leeds’ success during their return to the top flight was striker Patrick Bamford – hitting the ground running at the very top level.

The striker grabbed 16 goals in the promotion season, before notching one better the following campaign, looking well worth the £7m fee after becoming a full England international during 2020/21.

He registered 33 goals during his two full seasons under the Argentine, playing the best football of his career and undoubtedly benefitting from his appointment in Yorkshire.

Winger Crysencio Summerville may have only featured nine times under the experienced boss, but he’s since made the club a huge profit in recent years after providing the goods on the pitch following his arrival in 2020.

Last season, the Dutchman registered 29 combined goals and assists in the Championship, subsequently earning a £25m move to West Ham United, after narrowly missing out on promotion.

However, the same can’t be said for one player who arrived at Elland Road with huge promise after his transfer back in 2020 under Bielsa’s guidance.

The player who Leeds struck gold offloading

Winger Ian Poveda had high hopes to be a success in Yorkshire after joining on a free transfer from English giants Manchester City back in January 2020.

Leeds forward Ian Poveda.

He would only make 20 appearances during his first 18 months at the club, many of which coming off the substitutes bench, needing game time to progress and help him live up to his potential, with Bielsa dubbing him as “immense” during his time with the Whites.

However, his two loan spells with Blackburn Rovers and Blackpool would see him score just four times in 36 matches, but it was somehow enough to catapult him back into Daniel Farke’s plans last season.

The one-time Colombian international made ten appearances during the first half of the season, before yet another loan spell with Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday, Sadly, he was once again unable to deliver – failing to find the back of the net during his temporary stint.

His contract would expire during the summer, with Leeds deciding against extending his deal after his lack of impact during his four years contracted to the club, subsequently joining fellow second-tier side Sunderland on a free transfer over the summer.

However, the fresh start hasn’t worked out as the 24-year-old would’ve envisaged, appearing for just 44 minutes in the league to date and struggling to help the Black Cats’ own promotion ambitions.

Given his lack of form after his Elland Road departure, there’s no denying that the club made the right call in parting ways with the attacker.

Ian Poveda for Leeds

His youthful years mean he still has many years to resurrect his once-promising career, but the Whites’ supporters will be hoping that it doesn’t come against them towards the end of the season, as both sides look to do battle and return to the Premier League come the end of May.

However, Veiga’s desire to play at centre-back means he’s already agreed personal terms on a January switch to Borussia Dortmund – who have a wonderful track record of developing young stars and are extremely keen on a mid-season deal for the 21-year-old.

Chelsea have already knocked back a loan bid from Wolves, and won’t be entertaining proposals for a temporary transfer of any kind, as they set Veiga’s asking price at around £25 million.

Nkunku, meanwhile, has set his sights on a move to Bayern Munich. The France international is one of Chelsea’s top scorers in all competitions, bagging 13 in all competitions, but Maresca appears to deem him an impact player from the bench when it comes to regular chances in the Premier League.

The bulk of his starts have come in cup competitions, and this doesn’t appear to satisfy the 26-year-old, as Nkunku verbally agrees on a contract to leave Chelsea for Bayern.

Both sides are now in ongoing talks over his transfer to the Allianz Arena (Florian Plettenberg), but Fabrizio Romano says yet another Chelsea player could join Nkunku and Veiga in heading for the exit door.

Chelsea in talks to offload defender Axel Disasi in January

According to Romano, that man is £38 million defender Axel Disasi.

The centre-back, who Maresca has often utilised at full-back when the likes of Malo Gusto and Reece James have been unavailable, is expected to be left out of the squad to play Bournemouth this evening.

Important clubs are in talks to explore a January move for Disasi, as per Romano, after Chelsea held discussions with the Frenchman over his future. Following these conversations with Disasi, the west Londoners are now open to letting him leave before February 3.

Branded a “leader” in the team for some of his performances, Disasi still faces stiff competition for regular playing time, and it appears his exit is now firmly on the cards.
