Belgium and Tottenham Hotspur legend Toby Alderweireld has revealed that health concerns were the main reason behind his retirement from international football. Alderweireld formed a crucial partnership with Jan Vertonghen at the heart of the defence and was integral to Belgium's 'Golden Generational' that were among the best teams in the world from 2014 to 2022, although they failed to win any major trophies.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Alderweireld made his debut for the Belgian national team on May 29, 2009, and played his final game at the 2022 World Cup. The 35-year-old announced his retirement in March 2023 with 127 caps to his name.

He appeared in three World Cups (2014, 2018, 2022) and two European Championships (2016, 2020) and is Red Devils' third-highest appearance maker for all-time.

  • WHAT TOBY ALDERWEIRELD SAID

“After the lost cup match against Union I was angry and frustrated,” Alderweireld told Belgian media outlet VRT (h/t Sporza). "I couldn't sleep that night and went to the club early the next morning to do a strength session. Before I left, I took a caffeine pill because I don't like coffee.

"When I was in the car, my heart suddenly started beating at a rate of a thousand an hour. I thought: I'm going to have a heart attack. I'm done for, I'm never going to see my children again. I pulled over, walked into a furniture store and asked if they could call 911.

"It turned out that all the stress made my heart pound. That gave me a panic attack, which made my heart beat even faster. You actually drive yourself crazy. And at a certain point you think you're going to have a heart attack and die.

"We did a lot of tests, but everything was okay. Then I started talking to people and they said it was due to too much stress. Purely a panic attack. Now I still suffer from that sometimes, but I can accept that because I know it's nothing.

"That's why I quit the national team. I had a great time there with five major tournaments and was able to close that chapter."

    WHAT NEXT FOR TOBY ALDERWEIRELD?

Alderweireld returned to Belgian Pro League side Antwerp in 2022 and led them to their first league title at the end of the 2022-23 after 66 years, scoring a stunning last-minute winner. Antwerp next take on Dender in Belgium's top-flight on Friday, November 22.

Everton submit bid to sign £25 million striker whose "currency is goals"

With Everton's current attacking options facing an uncertain future at Goodison Park, the club are looking at a highly-rated striker to help bolster Sean Dyche's forward line.

Toffees talisman could be sold this summer

The biggest story out of Goodison Park in recent weeks has been the saga around the future of Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Despite interest from both Newcastle United and West Ham, Everton long looked reluctant to let the striker leave this summer with the 27-year-old seen as a vital part of the Toffees' squad.

In spite of their initial refusal to allow offers for Calvert-Lewin it now appears that the club's hand has been forced and the player may have to be sold during the transfer window. Owing to the Toffees' failed takeover by The Friedkin Group a couple of weeks back, it now transpires that the striker's sale could be necessary in order to stave off any further financial sanctions.

Another forward who could be leaving Merseyside this summer is Beto, who could call time on his Toffees career after just one season. The Portguese forward arrived in a £26 million move from Udinese last summer and after failing to impress during his maiden campaign, could be shown the door before the window slams shut on the 30th August.

beto-everton-opinion-premier-league

With a new striker clearly high on Everton's list of priorities, it appears that the club have submitted an offer to sign a forward with proven Premier League experience.

Everton make an offer for Tammy Abraham

As first reported by Sport Witness, the Italian press are claiming that Everton are among the clubs chasing AS Roma’s Tammy Abraham. The outlet states that the Toffees have made contact with the Serie A outfit over a move for the Englishman and have gone on to submit a bid to bring him to Merseyside.

Whilst the value of the bid is not known, a report from last month suggested that Roma were looking for a fee in the region of £25 million to part ways with the striker this summer. Sport Witness claims that Everton are joined by fellow Premier League side West Ham United in the race to secure Abraham's services.

Tammy Abraham

At 26 years of age, Abraham already boasts a CV with successful spells in England and Italy as well as 11 caps for the England national team. Across his 328 senior appearances, the striker has managed to score on 127 occasions, showing his proficiency at finding the back of the net.

Speaking during Abraham's loan spell at Aston Villa back in 2018/19, former Villa boss Dean Smith spoke highly of the player describing the striker as someone whose "currency is goals".

With Everton in the market for a new number nine this summer, the Toffees could do a lot worse than a player like Abraham who boasts no shortage of experience in England.

Liverpool make move to sign "complete" £50m Thiago successor

Now that the summer's international tournaments have wrapped up, focus on the transfer window will be accentuated, though, much to the frustration of the fanbase, all remains quiet at Liverpool.

Arne Slot is assessing his newly inherited squad and still awaits the returns of multiple first-team stars following international commitments, with sporting director Richard Hughes revealing that business is more likely to be conducted later down the line.

However, FSG are always willing to move for a shrewd deal, and there's one such market opportunity that might just prove to be too good to turn down.

Liverpool transfer news

According to Calcio Mercato, Juventus are struggling to meet Atalanta's demands in the pursuit of centre-midfielder Teun Koopmeiners, which could see Liverpool steal ahead.

The Merseysiders are long-time admirers of the Netherlands international, who played under Slot at AZ Alkmaar, and while Juventus are hoping to seal the deal, finances are proving to be a sticking point.

Liverpool are understood to hold the funds to complete a deal, however, and given that Atalanta are holding for €60m (£50m), the Reds may yet find themselves in the driving seat, having already moved ahead to learn conditions of a possible transfer.

What Teun Koopmeiners would bring to Liverpool

A multi-functioning midfielder, Koopmeiners is creative in possession and crisp and combative out of it, with a wide range of technical strengths that could see him excel in the Premier League.

Netherlands midfielder Teun Koopmeiners

The 26-year-old was forced to watch his nation's Euro 2024 campaign from the sidelines after picking up an injury on the cusp of the tournament, though there's no question that he earned his stripes last season, instrumental in Atalanta's Europa League triumph – ending Bayer Leverkusen's record unbeaten streak to lift the trophy and defeating Liverpool on the way to the final.

He was described as "very versatile" by his Serie A manager, Piero Gian Gasperini, though he spent much of the 2023/24 campaign in a forward-driving midfield position, scoring 15 goals across 51 appearances and adding seven assists.

Marvelling at the player's ability, his former coach Pascal Jansen has said: "His stamina is amazing. His pressing and chasing abilities when out of possession, I would almost say they are inhuman."

It's almost like he's tailor-made for Slot's high-octane, control-focused system, even ranking among the top 6% of attacking midfielders and wingers in the Italian top flight last term for passes attempted and the top 2% for progressive passes per 90, as per FBref.

Why Liverpool need Teun Koopmeiners

Liverpool are well-stocked in the centre of the park, though if Slot and Co opt against signing a specialist No. 6 it is highly likely that Alexis Mac Allister will operate in a deeper-lying role, as he did on many occasions under Jurgen Klopp last year. Wataru Endo enjoyed a solid campaign last term too but the 31-year-old has his limitations.

Liverpool players Wataru Endo and Alexis Mac Allister

Despite the wealth of talent at Slot's disposal in the middle of the field, Koopmeiners could make a marked impact on the squad, not least because he embodies many of Thiago Alcantara's standout attributes.

Thiago has recently retired from football after his Liverpool contract expired last month. The 33-year-old is one of the game's superlative technicians, distinguished across the globe, though his final professional term was wrecked by injuries that limited him to just five minutes of action, coming in a defeat against Arsenal in February.

Still, while his Liverpool career didn't reach the heights dreamily envisaged, Thiago still excelled across his 98 appearances, with talkSPORT host Tony Cascarino even remarking that he's "up there with the very best".

Statistical data from the 2023/24 campaign is negligible, but the previous term illustrates quite clearly how good the maestro was, despite suffering significant injury issues again. He ranked among the top 2% of Premier League midfielders in 2022/23 for passes attempted and progressive passes, the top 11% for successful take-ons and the top 10% for tackles per 90, showcasing how he was one of the most complete midfielders around.

Atalanta central midfielder Teun Koopmeiners.

Once praised as the "complete" midfielder by Dutch legend Ruud Krol, Koopmeiners could prove to be a brilliant Thiago replacement, not quite stylistically identical but carrying some of the Spaniard's principal ball-playing characteristics – and a sharp intelligence besides.

It would be unjust to say that the Anfield side need a Thiago replacement: he didn't play last season. That said, one can only imagine the heights that could have been reached with the midfield magician pulling strings from the heart of the field, perhaps instilling the perfect chemistry and coherence through his passing prowess to have seen Liverpool swerve the late-season slump that unravelled Klopp's swansong.

Slot is working hard to drill his philosophy into the Red Merseysiders, and while he's lost one of the Premier League's brightest midfield talents in Thiago, he could swiftly replace him with a player he knows well: Koopmeiners. The Dutchman is tenacious and supremely talented, willing to chip in defensively and boasting the motor requisite for success in the fast-paced Slot system.

Whether FSG decide to make such a move this summer remains to be seen, but there's no doubting Koopmeiners' quality, and there's no question that he would be a credit to Slot's outfit.

Leeds make contact to sign £3m star who could replicate Rutter

Leeds United weakened one of their potential rivals for promotion from the Championship next season when they swooped for Jayden Bogle earlier this month.

The English right-back has joined on a permanent deal from Sheffield United, who were just relegated from the Premier League, in a blow for Chris Wilder's side.

Daniel Farke has now added four players to his squad during the summer transfer window, with Bogle joining Joe Rodon, Alex Cairns, and Joe Rothwell.

The West Yorkshire side could be ready to deal another blow to their South Yorkshire rivals, as they are reportedly battling for the same player.

Leeds eyeing League One star

According to The Boot Room, Leeds have made contact with Peterborough United over a potential deal to sign impressive left-back Harrison Burrows.

The report claims that Sheffield United have been in advanced talks to sign the 22-year-old starlet but the Whites are now threatening to come in and hijack their move.

It states, however, that is is unclear as to whether or not the club have formalised their interest with an actual bid for his services, which could leave the Blades in the driving seat if they have not.

The Boot Room adds that a fee of £3m is on the cards for the League One dynamo, who has one year left to run on his current contract with Peterborough.

Leeds must now press ahead and follow up on their initial contact with a bid for him, if they have not already, as he could replicate Georginio Rutter's immense creativity at Elland Road.

Harrison Burrows' creative quality

Despite playing at left-back, Burrows has the creative quality to replicate the Frenchman's incredible chance creation numbers for the Whites next season.

The English defender's form in League One for Peterborough suggests that the potential is there for him to be an exciting addition to Farke's attacking roster.

Burrows, who has been hailed as "unbelievable" and "amazing" by boss Darren Ferguson, is yet to prove himself in the Championship but his statistics from last term indicate that it is a worthwhile gamble to bring him to Elland Road.

As you can see in the table above, the Posh wizard posted incredibly similar numbers to Rutter at league level last season, with one less goal contributions in the same number of games.

Burrows, actually, provided more key passes per game than the French ace, despite the Leeds star being an attacking midfielder, and these statistics speak to the immense creativity he can provide from a left-back role.

Now, imagine if the Whites have both left-footed magicians in their side next season to consistently break down opposition defences to create high-quality chances for their teammates.

Leeds pursuing deal for "strong" star who'd brilliantly replace Cresswell

Leeds could break down low blocks with ease with the invention and passing quality of Burrows and Rutter in their side, which is why this could be an exciting addition if they can get it over the line.

Arsenal could reach another level with dream £100m Rice & Odegaard partner

There are less than two weeks until the Premier League returns, and while it's sure to be an important season for every club, that's probably truer for Arsenal.

Mikel Arteta's side will be hoping they can get over the line and end their two-decade title drought at the third time of asking after coming so close for the last two campaigns.

However, to do that, the Gunners need to bring in some more stars. While there are a plethora of super-talented players that Edu Gaspar and Co could bring in to supercharge the team, one in particular would be an incredible pickup.

The superstar in question has been heavily linked with the Gunners in the past, and while signing him could prove exceptionally challenging, he'd be an incredible addition to the midfield and form an unreal partnership with Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice.

Arsenal transfer news

The player in question is Newcastle United's midfield general Bruno Guimarães, who, according to a recent report from The Mirror, remains a long-term target for Arsenal despite reaffirming his commitment to the Magpies in recent days.

Newcastle's Bruno Guimaraes

However, as fans are well aware nowadays, a player's platitudes mean very little in modern football, and so, while it might be unlikely, the Gunners should push to bring the former Lyon ace to the Emirates this summer.

If Edu and Co could work their magic and convince the 26-year-old to up sticks and move to North London, the club would have to stump up a massive fee, as reports this summer have claimed that the Toon value him at around £100m.

Bruno Guimaraes for Newcastle

It would require a serious effort from Arsenal to get this transfer over the line, but if they have a chance, they have to take it, as a midfield three of Rice, Odegaard, and Guimarães would be incredible.

Why Guimarães would be an incredible signing for Arsenal

Okay, so let's entertain this hopeful optimism for a little bit longer and examine a few of the reasons why Guimarães would be such an incredible signing for Arsenal, particularly for Rice and Odegaard.

Bruno Guimaraes

The first is that, like the two Arsenal stars, the Toon ace has an extraordinarily clean injury record, with just eight games missed for club and country across his entire career thus far.

This resilience and ability to remain fit for entire seasons would make it much easier for him to form effective partnerships with those around him. Unlike Thomas Partey, for example, the 26-year-old could be relied upon to be there day in and day out.

Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes.

The second reason the Rio de Janeiro-born ace would be great for Arteta's midfield stars is his raw output.

In 50 games for the Magpies last season, he scored seven goals and provided ten assists, equating to a goal involvement on average every 2.9 games.

This means he'd be able to either get on the end of killer passes and score himself to boost his teammates' assist tallies or play that killer ball himself, potentially helping Odegaard improve his goalscoring numbers from their already impressive level.

The final reason the "world-class" midfielder, as dubbed by talent scout Jacek Kulig, would be such a great signing is his ability to play in either central or defensive midfield.

Across his career, he has played 160 games as a six and 63 as an eight, although when you look at his heatmap from last season, when he started more games as a six, you can see that his natural game is to venture forward.

This ability to do both would make him the perfect player to connect play between Rice and Odegaard in the middle of the park. He would help the former out with some defensive work when needed before flying forward to help the latter by either creating space or playing the ball himself.

Arsenal can finally axe Zinchenko by signing the "best LB in the world"

The incredible talent would be a game-changer for the Gunners.

4 ByJack Salveson Holmes Aug 9, 2024

Ultimately, this is a move that seems unlikely this summer and there is no getting away from that, but if Guimarães really is still a long-term target for Arsenal, then going all out to bring him in would be a bold statement and the perfect way to complete the team's midfield at the same time.
