Arsenal reluctantly prepared to sell "joy to watch" who Arteta still wants

Arsenal are reluctantly prepared to sell a player who manager Mikel Arteta ideally wants to keep, with the Gunners boss also having lavished him with praise.

Players who could still leave Arsenal this summer

This week, striker Eddie Nketiah and defender Jakub Kiwior have been the two players most heavily linked with the Arsenal exit door.

Nketiah has reportedly agreed terms with Marseille as the Ligue 1 giants and Arsenal negotiate over price, while Fabrizio Romano has backed that Kiwior could depart Arsenal now that defender Riccardo Calafiori has been signed.

The duo form just a couple of the many players who Arsenal could listen to offers for, and they're part of a long list including Thomas Partey, Aaron Ramsdale, Kieran Tierney, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Reiss Nelson and Emile Smith Rowe.

Arsenal chiefs expect Partey to be sold in the coming weeks, and the same could be said for goalkeeper Ramsdale after the Englishman lost his number one spot to David Raya last season.

Smith Rowe, meanwhile, suffered from precious few opportunities to impress at the Emirates over 23/24 – making just 13 Premier League appearances with 10 of them coming off the substitute's bench.

Arsenal will reluctantly sell Smith Rowe who Arteta ideally wants to keep

Speaking to CaughtOffside, reliable reporter Charles Watts has shared an intriguing update on the Englishman's future. He says that Arsenal will reluctantly sell Smith Rowe in the event of a good offer, despite Arteta actually ideally wanting to keep the 23-year-old.

“There has been a bid from Fulham for Smith Rowe, but that has been rejected. A second bid is expected, but Crystal Palace are also expected to make an offer soon having made their interest in the playmaker known,” Watts said.

“In an ideal world, Mikel Arteta would keep Smith Rowe. This time last year he made it clear that he would not be sold and I think his stance would be the same this time around if it was just down to a footballing decision. But Smith Rowe now has just two years left on his contract and has a strong desire to be playing regular football having sat on the bench for much of the last two seasons.

Arsenal midfielder Emile Smith-Rowe.

“So Arsenal would reluctantly let him leave should a good offer arrive from Fulham, Palace or anyone else. But at the moment that offer has not arrived and that is why Smith Rowe has flown with the squad to the United States. It’s certainly not a case that Arsenal will be forcing him out of the door.”

Smith Rowe's best season came during the 2021/2022 campaign, where he scored 10 goals and bagged a further two assists in an impressive breakout year.

However, a combination of fitness issues and more competition for places in the squad has limited his opportunities in the last two years. It will be interesting to see what Arsenal deem a reasonable fee for the £40,000-per-week ace, who Arteta described as a "joy to watch".

Virat Kohli: Our support spinners didn't 'create enough pressure with the ball'

Kohli affirmed that their “lack of execution is acceptable”, as long as the mindset was in the right place

Varun Shetty09-Feb-20212:14

Where did India lose the first Test?

In his assessment of India’s efforts during their 227-run defeat to England, captain Virat Kohli said the struggles of supporting spinners Shahbaz Nadeem and Washington Sundar during England’s first innings affected India’s control of the game, and eventually the result. Nadeem and Sundar, who were both playing their second Tests for India, went at close to four runs per over and took two wickets in 70 overs between them. On the other hand, senior bowlers R Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah, and Ishant Sharma went at a collective rate of 2.6 as England batted into the seventh session of the match for their 578.”You need to understand two things in this situation – as a bowling unit, we didn’t bowl well collectively,” Kohli said. “If you consider the fast bowlers and Ashwin, then yes, we bowled consistently and in good areas. But if Washi and Shahbaz had also bowled such economical spells, then you create more pressure, you cut out 80-90 runs from the opposition. Plus if you see from the batting point of view in the first innings, if you add about 80 runs more, then the match becomes almost equal. So there’s no need to overthink it. We just have to continuously build pressure on them. And if we do that, then I have full belief that we’ll get the results that we’ve achieved as a side on many occasions.”In an earlier conversation after the match with broadcaster , Kohli affirmed that their “lack of execution is acceptable”, as long as the mindset was in the right place; that, Kohli said, was visible in the second innings and that the pressure applied from the bowling unit was good enough, albeit not enough to win the Test.Nadeem was with India’s squad as a standby bowler, and replaced allrounder Axar Patel, who was believed to be a frontrunner for a debut in this Test until he was injured on the eve of the Test. Patel was slated to play a role similar to that of the injured Ravindra Jadeja, and his inclusion might have given India the chance to play wristspinner Kuldeep Yadav. That is, if they would be inclined to drop Sundar, who was one of their heroes in the famous Gabba win on debut and contributed valuable runs in this Test as well. From Kohli, there were no doubts about the bowling line-up India eventually went with, saying Nadeem was the man they had penciled in for the role.Virat Kohli waged a lone battle in India’s final-innings chase•BCCI”Not really. Not at all. Because when you’re playing two off-spinners, Kuldeep more or less becomes a similar kind of spinner taking the ball away [from the left-handers],” Kohli said. “So you need variety in the bowling attack. We were quite clear on what combination we wanted to play and there are no regrets whatsoever on that decision. And moving forward, we will think of combinations that will bring us variety as a bowling attack and not one-dimensional where the ball is only turning away from the bat. These things are really important to understand.”With the exception of Ashwin, and Jadeja to an extent, India have had to chop and change their bowling attack to a huge degree over their last few Tests. At the moment, injuries are keeping Jadeja, Umesh Yadav, and Mohammed Shami out of the squad. But India aren’t being bogged down by hypotheticals.”Well they’re not here, so whether they could have or would have is irrelevant,” Kohli said in response to a question about the benefits Shami or Yadav might have brought to a Test replete with reverse swing. “Look, we are not a side that goes into what-ifs and what could have been and what should have been. If you’re adding to what could have been, then we’re talking about someone like Jaddu playing this Test as well – then you’re talking about a totally different situation. So let’s not go there. Let’s be aware of the fact that we have a strong team. We have individuals in front of us who we believe will do the job for the team. And, in one game where the execution hasn’t happened, does not mean that it won’t happen again.”So we have to keep believing in our process. We have had a lot of success as a team and we have to believe that as a side if you play good cricket, more good things are gonna happen in the future and not think of what if this payer was here and that player was here. All three of them are injured, so we have bench strength. You saw a true example of that in Australia and we totally believe in the players that we have in the team and we’re confident that we’re going to bounce back strong. We’re really looking forward to being on the field again.”

Palmer repeat: Chelsea keen on signing young PL gem who’s "like Odegaard"

Chelsea are continuing to scour the market for the best young talent, having already acquired 18-year-old Barcelona striker Marc Guiu and Aston Villa's Omari Kellyman.

The Blues are hoping to strike gold again, as they did with Cole Palmer, signing him from Manchester City, and going on to make 45 appearances for Chelsea, scoring 25 goals, and providing 15 assists in his first season.

Cole Palmer celebrates for Chelsea

Palmer's impressive season, finishing runner-up in the Premier League Golden Boot Award, is the antithesis of what Chelsea want to do with these types of signings, bringing in highly regarded young talents and giving them a chance to impress and earn their spot.

Chelsea transfer news

According to reports from Dailymail, Chelsea are one of multiple Premier League clubs interested in Manchester City youngster James McAtee.

Whilst the reports suggest McAtee is scheduled to join City on their pre-season tour, the club are aware that Chelsea are watching the player's progress, with new Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca having attempted to sign him at Leicester City last season.

Former Sheffield United loanee James McAtee.

McAtee made 33 appearances in total for Sheffield United on loan last term, scoring five goals, and providing four assists in his 1,945 minutes played.

Despite his efforts to help the side, the Blades did finish 20th in the Premier League and were relegated back to the Championship following their promotion the season prior.

Why McAtee could be the next Palmer success story

Of course, the easiest comparison to make is the fact that both players have come through the Manchester City academy. Both boast impressive records for the U23 side, Palmer scoring 22 goals and providing 11 assists in 29 games, whilst McAtee scored 27 goals and provided 19 assists in 52 games.

Like Palmer, McAtee is left-footed, and can operate in many different positions. In his 33 appearances for Sheffield United, the 21-year-old played right wing, attacking midfield, central midfield, and even as a centre-forward.

The Chelsea man also played a host of positions last campaign, playing 19 games as a right-winger, 18 games as an attacking midfielder, and seven games as a centre-forward (false nine). This shows both players are versatile in attacking areas, and can affect the game from different zones of the pitch.

What makes this so appealing is the moldable profile you are gaining, Palmer joined, having played a lot off the right wing for City in his cameo appearances, and having played a mix of right-wing and attacking midfield at youth level.

McAtee is the same, and this gives the manager a freedom to unleash the best version of that player, showcasing their best traits and allowing them to function in a system that suits them.

BBC Pundit Carl Asaba said "he's like Odegaard" when speaking about McAtee. This shows despite playing more games from the right than centrally last season, the 21-year-old could be further unleashed in a more prominent central zone, allowing him to utilise his best assets such as progressive carries in central areas.

The toolset of a top player is there, and if City aren't ready to give McAtee increased inclusion next season with the first team, Chelsea would surely be more than happy to take a punt on him as they did with Palmer.

Amorim is in his final week at Sporting CP after United announced his arrival at Old Trafford on Friday. The manager will formally leave the Lions on November 11 and head to the Premier League. Ahead of completing his move to England, the 39-year-old coach was asked if he could consider raiding his old club in the January transfer window and try to sign star striker Gyokeres.

  • WHAT RUBEN AMORIM SAID

Speaking on the Red Devils' transfer pursuit of the Swedish star, the Portuguese coach said, "Gyokeres costs €100 million (£83.7m) and it's very difficult. I'm not going to pick up any Sporting player in January."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Gyokeres who scored four goals in the club's thumping 5-1 win over Estrela Amadora in a Liga Portugal clash on Friday, remained tight-lipped on his future with the Portuguese champions. The player, however, wished his manager luck ahead of his move to United.

Speaking to reporters, the striker said, "It wasn't a normal situation [this week], but we showed that we handled it well and won 5-1. It was a good reaction from us, we have to remain professional and do things the right way. It's sad that he's leaving, he was excellent for us, we had a wonderful year. We have to adapt, but it's difficult to talk about the future because we don't know what will happen, but I'm sure we'll do the same job. If we can do it, we'll continue as we have been doing. We wish him all the best, it's very good for him."

He added, "I don't know, I'm here. As you can see, I really enjoy playing here and I'm not thinking about anything else, I'm enjoying being here."

Juventus forward Dusan Vlahovic appears to have implicitly aimed a dig at Thiago Motta, his manager at Juventus, while on international duty. The Serbia forward has scored nine goals in 16 appearances this term under Motta, but is seemingly not particularly happy with the way he's being used.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

After Juve splashed over €8o million to sign Vlahovic from Fiorentina in January 2022, the striker hasn't quite hit the levels expected of him. Vlahovic has scored 50 goals in 117 appearances for the Old Lady and recent reports have suggested that Arsenal are eyeing a January move for the player.

Now, Vlahovic's recent comments are only going to add further fire to the speculation regarding his Juventus future. The 24-year-old, while on international duty with Serbia, revealed that he likes playing for his country more than he loves playing for his club, aiming a subtle dig at Motta.

  • WHAT DUSAN VLAHOVIC SAID

“Yes I like to play with another striker on the side," Vlahovic told RSI after Serbia's Nations League game against Switzerland (h/t Calciomercato).

"I get on well but it also depends on the coach. Definitely it is a bit easier because [Aleksandar] Mitrovic is a strong player who plays a lot with his back to goal and engaging in aerial duels and I can exploit my qualities.

"It's also because coach Dragan Stojković did not force me to do so many defensive tasks. And for a player like me, for my frame…honestly I can't run so much. Because then I am not fresh in the final third.”

England consider lodging ICC pitch complaint as Chris Silverwood calls on batsmen to heed lessons

England are considering making a formal complaint to the ICC following their two-day defeat in this week’s third Test in Ahmedabad – an experience that Chris Silverwood, England’s head coach, says he hopes will galvanise his young batsmen to fully cash in when the going is good in the future.England were routed by ten wickets in the day-night Test at the newly opened Narendra Modi Stadium in Motera, after collapsing to scores of 112 and 81 in their two innings – making for an aggregate of 193 that is their lowest in India, and their second-lowest anywhere in the world since 1904.India’s own batting scarcely fared any better in their first innings, as Joe Root returned the extraordinary figures of 5 for 8 with his part-time offbreaks. And while the skiddiness of the pink ball was cited as one factor, with 20 of the 30 wickets falling either lbw or bowled in the course of the contest, the lavish turn that all the spinners extracted in between whiles made survival extremely tricky for even the best on show.”We will be talking about certain things behind the scenes,” Silverwood said. “At the same time, we are disappointed that we are sat here when there should be three days of cricket left. I am sure a few spectators are as well. We’ve spoken to [match referee] Javagal Srinath but not about the pitch. Joe and I have to have a sit-down, have a conversation and see where we go with it.”Opinion has been sharply divided about the merits of the Motera pitch. Virat Kohli, India’s captain, blamed “below-par batting on both sides”, while his counterpart Root said the stadium’s 40,000 fans had been “robbed” of the chance to witness a proper battle between bat and ball. “People had to watch me get wickets on there which shouldn’t be the case,” he said.Axar Patel celebrates after dismissing Jonny Bairstow•BCCI

However, Silverwood also acknowledged that England had been complicit in their downfall, particularly after winning an important toss and reaching 74 for 2 in their first innings. Had they gone on to post even a score of 200, they might have been in a position to control the contest. Instead they lost their last eight wickets for 38, and allowed India to reach 99 for 3 by stumps on the first day.”We do have to get better on these pitches and we do have to accept there’s places where we could have improved,” Silverwood said. “Look at the first innings. We had an opportunity there to score more runs and next time we’ll pounce on that. And whatever the pitch did or didn’t do, India ultimately played better than us on that surface. But it probably pushed us to the extremes of what most of our players, if any, have experienced.”With that in mind, Silverwood is adamant that his team will be stronger for the experience – particularly the contingent of young batsmen in England’s ranks, many of whom have been experiencing Test cricket in spinning conditions for the first time.It hasn’t been a tour of unmitigated failure for England’s rookies. Dom Sibley made back-to-back fifties in England’s victories in Galle and Chennai; Zak Crawley’s first-innings 53 was one of only two scores above 27 for either team in Ahmedabad, while Dan Lawrence, who did not feature in the third Test, showed his potential with a hard-fought 73 in his maiden Test innings against Sri Lanka. However, England have not passed 178 in five attempts since posting 578 in their maiden innings of the series, and all the players’ techniques have all been exposed in the prevailing conditions – not least that of Ollie Pope, who was beaten in flight rather than off the pitch by R Ashwin, and bowled in both innings in Ahmedabad.Pope at least fared better than Jonny Bairstow, who bagged a pair from No.3 on his return to the team following his mid-tour break, and it is a telling statistic of the winter so far that, while Root has made scores of 228, 186 and 218 in three individual innings, Sibley’s tally of 191 in five Tests is the next best return by any batsman. And yet, having been credited with reappraising England’s approach to Test-match batting since his appointment as head coach in 2019, Silverwood is sure that the struggles of recent weeks will harden his team’s resolve to make their starts count – not just in India, but on into next winter’s Ashes tour too.Related

“You look at the guys we’ve got in there, your Popes, Crawleys, Sibleys, all these guys coming through this experience,” Silverwood said. “As tough as it is at the moment, it will hopefully galvanise them. When they do get in on flat surfaces, better surfaces, it will make them even more hungry and desperate to make sure they get the runs on those surfaces.”When we travel to other countries such as Australia, hopefully if they’ll get themselves in, they’ll get greedy and go big. And that’s where it comes back into our gameplan of making big individual scores, big first-innings scores, which until recently we’ve been very good at, and creating big partnerships.”Hopefully this experience will just harden them towards that and make them potentially just appreciate the flatter wickets a little bit more, and make them more greedy for it.”But equally, hopefully they do take a lot from it, and next time they come onto a surface or experience a situation like this, it won’t be as much of a shock to them and hopefully they will have had a think about how they use their skills to combat what’s in front of them.”As tough as it is and as painful as it is at this moment, hopefully we can take some good lessons.”

West Indies stretch lead despite wobble after Rahkeem Cornwall five-for

Visitors, 1-0 up in the two-Test series, are 154 runs in front with seven second-innings wickets left

Sreshth Shah13-Feb-2021Stumps Liton Das and Mehidy Hasan starred with the bat for Bangladesh, while Rahkeem Cornwall earned his second Test five-wicket haul as the third day of the Dhaka Test see-sawed right until the close of play. At stumps, West Indies were 41 for 3 in their second innings, leading by 154 runs. While they do hold the advantage, Bangladesh have enjoyed the greater success in the last two sessions of the day.Starting the day on 105 for 4 in their first innings, well behind West Indies’ 409, Bangladesh’s overnight batsmen Mohammad Mithun and Mushfiqur Rahim had to survive a barrage of short balls from Shannon Gabriel first up. But when Gabriel – who overstepped thrice in his first three overs – went fuller, he was put away by the two for fours through the covers. Jomel Warrican, the left-arm spinner, had his opening spell cut short as he drifted too often to the leg, allowing easy runs on the on side.Cornwall then replaced Warrican and created the first chance of the morning when Mithun mistimed a whip off his toes that went just beyond midwicket. But, in his next over, Cornwall got Mithun’s wicket with an unorthodox field placement. Trying to flick off his boots, Mithun – on 15 – was through his shot too early and the ball went in the air. Kraigg Brathwaite – lurking at short midwicket, where he had placed himself for that very shot – dived to his right to take the catch at full length.Related

Mushfiqur Rahim, meanwhile, reached his 22nd half-century in Cornwall’s first over. He tried not to let the offspinner settle in from the first ball he faced, but was almost caught at short leg soon after his half-century. He then survived a close lbw call off Cornwall after missing a sweep, but soon paid the price of being overly aggressive – on 54, he tried a reverse sweep, only to toe-end a simple catch to cover. At 155 for 6, and still over fifty short of avoiding the follow-on, Das and Mehidy got together for 12 overs before lunch. After the session break – and against the older ball – they displayed exemplary concentration to block, leave and duck. The balls that were wide on either side of the stumps were punished for the occasional boundary. While Cornwall’s turn from the rough outside off kept both batsmen in two minds, Warrican failed to build pressure like his partner. Mehidy often rocked back against Warrican to cut – with the turn – while Das eyed the midwicket boundary. That period of play took the stand past fifty and ensured Bangladesh had avoided following-on, which had seemed like a distinct possibility at the start of the session. When Alzarri Joseph came into the attack, he preferred the shorter lengths. Both Das and Mehidy were happy to duck through that challenge and when Joseph bowled full, they punished him down the V. With Joseph and Gabriel failing to get any purchase with the older ball, Brathwaite went to part-time spin to count the overs down so that the pacers could return fresh with the new ball. But that’s when Das and Mehidy pounced. Nkrumah Bonner’s legspin was struck by Das for consecutive fours to reach his seventh Test fifty. Brathwaite’s offbreak, too, allowed easy singles. And when the new ball was taken, both Das and Mehidy looked to go on the offensive. The first over with the new ball, from Gabriel, was wayward, conceding six including four byes, and brought up the hundred stand. They went for their shots, often successfully, which made Gabriel impatient. The fast bowler showed it too, by saying a few words to the batsmen on his follow through, which forced the umpires to have a chat with him. Mehidy then got his own fifty, to back up the century in Chattogram. Having lost no wickets in the session, the period after lunch belonged completely to Bangladesh. It was the first session – since the first one on the first day – that they could call theirs, as they added 91 for no loss.Liton Das and Mehidy Hasan kept Bangladesh in the game with a century stand•AFP via Getty ImagesThe post-tea session started with both batsmen looking to attack the tired West Indian bowling attack that had not gone wicketless for over 40 overs. But Cornwall put the brakes on soon after, when he removed Das for 71 for his fourth scalp after the batsman got an edge off a paddle sweep.Trying to play fine, Das went across the stumps to sweep, but Jermaine Blackwood – at first slip – anticipated the shot and ran around behind the wicketkeeper. The ball took an inside edge, hit the back leg and popped in the air for Blackwood to take a simple catch. A few balls later, Cornwall removed No. 9 Nayeem Hasan after the batsman edged a defensive shot to Blackwood at slip, earning him the five-wicket haul. From the other end, Gabriel had the last laugh over Mehidy. The allrounder fell for 57 when his attempt to drive through the off side went straight to cover for a catch. Gabriel earned another wicket to end the Bangladesh innings on 296 when he rapped No. 11 Abu Jayed on the glove, for a simple catch to gully. Bangladesh lost their last four wickets for only 15 runs in under six overs. With 21 overs to go in the day, Bangladesh started with spin and struck thrice before stumps. Brathwaite was first to go, when he tried to flick Nayeem, only for it to go to wicketkeeper Das off the gloves. Mehidy then entered the record books when he became the fastest (and youngest) Bangladesh bowler to 100 Test wickets with Shayne Moseley edging to second slip. Mehidy reached the mark in 24 Tests, beating the previous record of 25, set by Taijul Islam.Islam then removed the other opener, John Campbell, late in the day in an unusual manner. As Campbell played defensively, the ball appeared to spin back after dropping on the pitch and turned back to hit the stumps. The final few minutes saw Bonner and nightwatchman Warrican trying to survive with soft hands. Bangladesh surrounded the batsmen with as many players as they could, but there was no further damage.

Nottingham Forest reach agreement to sign £3k-p/w ace likened to Grealish

Nottingham Forest have reached an agreement for their sixth signing of the summer as they gear up for the upcoming Premier League season, with a medical booked for their latest addition.

Nottingham Forest expected to do late business

So far, Nuno Espírito Santo's side have added just five new faces to their ranks this summer. Led by the £35m addition of Elliot Anderson from Newcastle United, they have also signed highly-rated Serbian defender Nikola Milenkovic to replace Moussa Niakhate, who completed a move to Lyon.

They have also added goalkeeper Carlos Miguel from Corinthians, as well as signing young pair Marko Stamenic and Eric da Silva Moreira from Red Star Belgrade and St Pauli repsectively.

But they are expected to remain busy for the coming month of the transfer window. As per reliable reporter John Percy, they are eyeing up at least five new faces.

"Forest will look to make further additions", he reports, with the "priority" being "two wingers, a forward, a left-back and another goalkeeper" between now and the end of the transfer window.

They have been linked with a shock loan move for Arsenal no.2 Aaron Ramsdale, while they are also thought to be set to submit an offer for impressive Brazilian teenager Wesley Gassova. And there is another deal that the club are on the verge of completing.

Winger set for Nottingham Forest medical

That comes in the shape of Portuguese attacker Jota Silva, who is set to fly to England to complete a medical with the Reds this week ahead of completing a move to the City Ground.

That is according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, who reveals that the Midlands outfit have reached a "verbal agreement" over a deal with Vitoria, which will see Forest pay €7m up front plus a potential €6m in further add-ons.

Jota Silva

Those add-ons consists of €3m if he plays 15 games, and a further €3m should he score 10 goals, while he is likely to be in for a major increase on his current £3,000 a week deal in Portugual.

Still just 24-years-old, Silva scored 11 goals and grabbed 7 assists from right wing last season, and will add more firepower to Nuno's attack.

It was a "top" season, according to analyst Ben Mattinson on X, who added that he "plays a lot like" Manchester City ace Jack Grealish, who once plied his trade across the Midlands with Aston Villa.
