Imagine him & Son: Spurs want to sign one of Europe’s ‘most coveted’ stars

Tottenham have started the window with a bang, acquiring highly rated talent Archie Gray from Leeds United. But they aren't looking to stop there, with plenty of attacking targets being linked with the club.

Spurs will be looking to clinch Champions League football next season, having missed out by two points, and finishing fifth in the Premier League last season, in Ange Postecoglou's first year in charge.

Having already bolstered the midfield with Gray, it is likely Tottenham will see at least one forward signing come through the door this summer, either in the shape of a striker, or a dynamic and exciting winger.

Tottenham chasing exciting winger

According to Football Insider, Tottenham are continuing to watch Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams closely and could make a move for the Spaniard. Aston Villa are also said to be long-term admirers of Williams.

The reports state Williams has a £49m release clause in his contract, but his wage demands could prove to be a stumbling block, as it seems Barcelona have been "scared off" due to the figures.

Williams is one of the shining stars at Euro 2024 currently, making three appearances, scoring one goal and providing one assist. Spain has won four out of four games so far, and will face Germany on Friday in the quarter-finals.

How Williams would form a deadly duo with Son

Williams made 37 appearances in all competitions last season for Athletic Bilbao, scoring eight goals, and providing 19 assists. Helping Bilbao towards a fifth-place finish in La Liga, bettering their eighth-place finish from the season before.

Bilbao managed to score 14 more goals last season compared to the season prior, and Williams had a massive part to play in that, adding eight G/A to his La Liga numbers in the most recent campaign.

The 14 assists Williams managed last term was the most impressive feat of his game, showing his elite ability to create chances through a variety of skills, such as his ball carrying, 1v1 ability, and his crossing.

Athletic Bilbao forward Nico Williams.

Williams excels in the ball-carrying metrics, averaging 5.69 progressive carries per 90, and 3.42 successful take-ons per 90, which both rank in the top 10% for wingers on the continent in this metric.

His ability to receive the ball in 1v1 situations, beat his man and find himself in dangerous areas to either deliver the ball or get a shot off, is what makes him so sought after, as he can create chances for himself and others.

But once he gets into these areas, he is also a top-level crosser of the ball, averaging 6.08 crosses per 90, and making 0.87 crosses into the penalty box per 90, which ranks in the top 1% for wingers in this metric.

nico-williams-arsenal-transfer-gossip-havertz-chelsea-athletic-bilbao-edu-arteta

Son Heung-min could be the beneficiary of this move, getting a deadly striking partner back, just like his past partnership with Harry Kane. Whilst Son used to operate from the left, with Kane in the middle, this could see a similar partnership struck, but with Son in the central zones, and Williams off the left.

The Spanish star's ability to take the creative burden away from Son, would allow him to operate even more in and around the box, getting more shots off, and showcasing that extremely clinical nature of his, producing a goals – xG of +0.15.

One thing is for sure, as Zach Lowy said, Nico Williams "is going to be one of the most coveted wingers in the transfer market this summer".

Imagine him & Windass: Sheffield Wednesday could sign a "lethal" attacker

Danny Rohl is looking to build a really strong Sheffield Wednesday squad ahead of the next Championship season kicking off, well aware that he doesn't want his Owls side to be plunged into another relegation dogfight.

The likes of Jamal Lowe, Ben Hamer and more have already moved to Hillsborough this summer, sensing that this coming campaign could be a positive one in South Yorkshire, with even more incomings anticipated down the line.

The Championship side could have their biggest statement signing coming up, if a deal can be arranged for a former target to join the club, as per reports.

Sheffield Wednesday target rejects new contract

It was reported all the way back in May, by football journalist Alan Nixon on social media, that Wednesday were still keen on trying to bring Orlando City striker Duncan McGuire in after failing to sign him in January.

Blackburn Rovers also spectacularly failed to land the in-demand 23-year-old in the last transfer window, owing to a last-minute break-down involving registration documents, and so the Owls will know they can still win his services this summer if McGuire fancies a switch to England once more.

The rejuventated South Yorkshire outfit will also be boosted by fresh developments that McGuire has turned down a new contract proposal with Orlando, which could open up the door for him to now move on without a hitch, but Serie A club Torino have also been noted as being an interested party previously.

What McGuire could offer Wednesday

With Josh Windass also now staying put, having agreed a new contract at Hillsborough to put to bed rumours about him exiting, Wednesday's attack could be electric next campaign with McGuire causing havoc up top alongside his new Owls teammate.

Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Josh Windass.

Wednesday could do with some major striker reinforcements this summer, with talks already underway for former Manchester United youngster Charlie McNeill to join Rohl's camp reportedly, whilst McGuire is also being lined up to relocate to Hillsborough.

The "lethal" attacker, as he has been described by Orlando manager Oscar Pareja in the past, would also fill gaps that have begun to form by Lee Gregory departing and Ike Ugbo returning to Troyes, with his reputation in America being that of a potent finisher under pressure.

McGuire has tallied up 23 goals from 57 games donning an Orlando strip to date, with seven goals registered from 17 appearances this calendar year playing in the MLS, scoring every 170 minutes for Pareja's men in the process.

He could become an even deadlier finisher slotting into the Wednesday set-up, with the likes of Windass, Anthony Musaba and Djeidi Gassama teeing up him for countless opportunities from the attacking midfield areas, if he does decide to join.

Although Windass wasn't consistently in the first team for all of the last campaign, he still left a lasting impression, hence the relief seen all over social media when he put pen on paper to a new deal, with six goals and two assists managed from 25 league clashes.

The Owls could well even end up being a dark horse when it comes to the race at the top end of the table, with McGuire a potential goalscoring hero for Wednesday as they aim to unsettle the division, wanting to quickly forget about their prior relegation struggles and shock teams in the Championship.

After Nsiala: Rangers close in on new signing who’d thrive with Cantwell

The summer transfer window does not officially open for business until later this month but Glasgow Rangers have moved quickly to get their business done.

Oscar Cortes was the first through the door on a second loan stint from Lens, with an obligation to make the move permanent next summer, after his first one was cut short by an injury earlier this year.

Brazilian left-back Jefte was then snapped up on a permanent deal from Fluminense to come in and potentially replace Borna Barisic, who departed upon the expiry of his contract at Ibrox.

The third and most recent addition of the summer came on Monday as the Light Blues officially confirmed a pre-contract agreement with French centre-back Clinton Nsiala.

He will join up with his new teammates on the 1st of July after his contract with AC Milan expires and head of recruitment Nils Koppen described him as an "exciting" talent who could develop under Philippe Clement in Glasgow.

The Scottish giants are not done there, however, as Koppen and Clement are now reportedly looking to seal yet another signing before the midway point in June.

Rangers closing in on fourth summer signing

According to an update from Rangers Review's Chris Jack, the Gers are closing in on the signing of winger Yusuf Kabadayi from German giants Bayern Munich.

The report claims that the Light Blues are now in pole position to seal a deal for the Germany U20 international to bolster the club's options out wide.

It states that Rangers are 'in line' to make the talented forward their fourth summer signing, following on from Cortes, Jefte, and the most recent addition of Nsiala.

Lens forward Oscar Cortes.

This comes after The 4th Official had reported, via their Patreon page (09/06/24), that the club had agreed a deal with Bayern to land the attacker, with a fee of between £1m and £1.5m on the table from the Scottish side.

Their update claimed that Kabadayi was set for talks with the Gers over a possible move to Ibrox and the latest report from Rangers Review now suggests that those discussions are set to lead to a positive conclusion for Koppen and Clement.

Therefore, it appears as though the 20-year-old whiz is set to be the next man to walk through the doors at Ibrox to join the squad ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

How will he fit in under Clement and with his new teammates? Well, the young gem could thrive whilst playing alongside current Gers attacking midfielder Todd Cantwell.

Why Todd Cantwell is a winger's dream

The former Norwich City playmaker has been a fantastic signing for the club since Michael Beale brought him in from the English side on a permanent deal in January of last year.

Cantwell hit the ground running in the Scottish Premiership for the Light Blues as he caught the eye with his attacking performances during the second half of the 2022/23 campaign.

Fabio Silva and Todd Cantwell

The right-footed magician racked up six goals, four assists, and five 'big chances' created in 16 appearances in the division, which speaks to his ability to make a consistent impact in the final third as both a scorer and a creator of goals.

That carried over into his first full year in Glasgow as the 26-year-old wizard showcased his quality at the top end of the pitch once again in a Gers shirt.

He was competing for a starting spot in the number ten role under Clement with Wales international Tom Lawrence and came out on top against the former Derby County star.

As you can see in the table above, Cantwell outperformed him as both a scorer and a creator of goals throughout the Premiership season, albeit it was not enough to secure the title for his team.

The talented whiz also scored his seven goals from an xG of 5.49, which is an overperformance of +1.51, and only Rabbi Matondo (five goals from 2.92 xG) outperformed his expected tally by more within the Rangers squad this season.

These statistics show that the English maestro is a dream for a winger as he has the ability to consistently create chances for his teammates, which provides the wide forwards with opportunities to score, and has the finishing skills to land assists for the wingers if they can create openings for him.

Why Yusuf Kabadayi would thrive with Cantwell

The German youngster could thrive with Cantwell as he is a player who likes to score goals and could benefit from the current Gers star's creativity.

Speaking on Rangers Review's YouTube channel, German expert Adam Khan described Kabadayi as a "goal-oriented" who likes to play on the left flank, an "inverted" winger, and cut inside into central areas to use his right foot to take shots at goal.

Rangers midfielder Todd Cantwell.

This suggests that the ex-Canaries magician would be the perfect number ten for him to play with as his ability to buzz around the pitch and pick up pockets of space to then progress the ball forward to wingers and strikers could constantly create opportunities for the wide man.

As you can see in the table below, Kabadayi enjoyed a taste of senior football for the first time last season as he scored four goals in 11 starts for Schalke on loan.

His form at youth level for Bayern Munich, however, suggests that there is much more to come from the right-footed dynamo in the years to come.

At the age of 20, Rangers will be buying him for potential as well as his ability in the present day, which means that there does need to be a degree of patience from supporters if he does not hit the ground running as an immediate star at Ibrox.

However, a return of 28 goals and ten assists in 73 appearances for Bayern at U17, U19, and second team level suggest that the potential is there for him to provide a big goal threat from the wing, which he showed glimpses of with his four strikes for Schalke.

Therefore, Kabadayi could thrive alongside Cantwell as the attacking midfielder has the quality to create chances for the winger to find the back of the net in a Light Blues shirt.

Imagine him & Isak: Newcastle plot move for "remarkable" £25m sensation

Since the takeover by the Saudi PIF back in 2021, Newcastle United have conducted excellent business in the transfer market that has seen the club transform from relegation candidates to European hopefuls.

Eddie Howe, the man at the helm for the Magpies, has done an excellent job in creating a settled side with all the investment, with the additions to the forward line making a huge impact at St James’ Park in particular.

Alexander Isak has undoubtedly been the best addition out of the bunch, scoring 35 times in his 67 appearances for the club since his £60m move to Tyneside from Real Sociedad.

Newcastle striker Alexander Isak

Anthony Gordon has rapidly developed under Howe’s watchful eye, registering 11 goals and ten assists in the Premier League last season – allowing the Magpies to register the fourth-best goalscoring tally in the division.

However, the duo couldn’t do enough to catapult the club into a second successive European qualification spot, with Howe looking to make improvements as a result.

One player in particular has become a player of interest in recent days, with Newcastle battling with numerous sides to win the race for the attacker’s signature.

Newcastle enter race to sign £25m wonderkid

According to TEAMtalk, Newcastle have overtaken Everton in the race to sign Leeds United forward Wilfried Gnonto and are now plotting a move.

Wilfried Gnonto

The Italian enjoyed a successful campaign in the Championship last season, scoring eight and assisting two, however, it wasn’t enough to secure an immediate return to England’s top flight.

Gnonto, who’s still only 20, is a versatile talent who can feature in any role across the front three, a characteristic that Howe is looking for as he looks to provide strength in depth to his forward line.

The TEAMtalk report also states that Daniel Farke’s side wanted £30m for his services last summer, but are willing to part ways with the youngster for £25m – a bargain for a player of his quality and potential.

His figures produced last season were very impressive to say the least, with some of his stats playing perfectly into the hands of Magpies star Isak.

Why Gnonto would be perfect alongside Isak

As previously mentioned, Swedish striker Isak has been a phenomenal signing since his move to Tyneside, cementing himself as one of the best finishers in England’s top flight.

As a result, he’s attracted interest from fellow Premier League sides Chelsea and Arsenal, but the Magpies would want a fee over the £100m mark to part ways with the 24-year-old.

Newcastle player Alexander Isak

However, with the potential arrival of Gnonto, Isak could reach the next level at St James’ Park, with the pair able to form a deadly partnership in the Premier League during 2024/25.

The “remarkable” Italian, as dubbed by journalist Ryan Taylor, managed a tally of ten goals and assists in the Championship last season, with his tally further bolstered by Howe’s already potent attack.

Gnonto has also averaged 4.8 progressive carries and 4.3 progressive passes per 90, demonstrating his ability to get the ball forward and create opportunities at any given opportunity – allowing Isak to be presented with more opportunities to bolster his goalscoring tally next season.

Whilst it’s understandable people may question his ability to cut it in the Premier League after spending last season in the second tier, but he’s previously excelled in England’s top flight, registering eight goal contributions in Leeds’ relegation campaign during 2022/23.

Whilst they do face tough competition from Everton for his signature, a move to Tyneside would tick all of the boxes for Howe, providing excellent cover in the attacking area.

£25m in today’s market would be excellent business for a talent who is undoubtedly going to improve further, especially under the guidance of Howe who has already showcased his ability to develop talents such as Isak and Gordon.

Jake Weatherald, Ryan Gibson, Wes Agar consign Melbourne Renegades to seventh straight loss

Weatherald’s fastest half-century in the BBL from the middle order helped the Adelaide Strikers return to form

Alex Malcolm05-Jan-2021Jake Weatherald’s fastest half-century in the BBL from the middle order helped the Adelaide Strikers return to form, as the Melbourne Renegades season went from bad to worse with another epic collapse leading to their seventh straight loss.Batting outside the top 3 for just the second time in his T20 career Weatherald thumped 51 off 25 balls in a rollicking 96-run partnership with Ryan Gibson to take the Strikers from a precarious position at 4 for 72 and post a competitive 5 for 171. Gibson made 43 not out from 31 and was awarded Player of the Match despite being outscored by his partner. The Renegades spinners had put the Strikers in a huge hole with Imad Wasim claiming 2 for 13 but he strangely only bowled three overs as skipper Aaron Finch got his calculations wrong.Finch’s night was capped by a first-ball duck at the start of the chase but the Renegades were in control of the chase at one stage thanks to a 67-run stand from Mackenzie Harvey and Sam Harper. In the first 11 overs Imad Wasim, Mohammad Nabi and Noor Ahmad delivered seven overs between them claiming 3 for 46. They squeezed Matt Renshaw and Alex Carey before the pair relented at the wrong time having set themselves to get to the Power Surge unscathed. Renshaw holed out trying to slog-sweep Nabi for the second ball in a row. Then Jon Wells and Carey holed out off Imad in the 11th over trying to avoid the run-rate dipping below 7. Imad’s had figures of 2 for 13 from 3 overs and the rate fell to 6.54.<bWeatherald fires from the middleWeatherald struggled to get going as he did against the Sydney Sixers, taking five balls to get off the mark and scoring two singles from his first eight balls. A short ball from Nabi ignited him as he pulled it over the short boundary. He had a good ally in Gibson, who also got a gift from Noor Ahmad. Gibson was failing to pick the wristspinner in his first three balls but Noor overstepped and the free hit allowed Gibson to get off the mark with a six. The pair delayed the Power Surge until the 17th over and exploded.Finch was going to use Imad's fourth over but changed his mind, giving the ball to Josh Lalor. The last four overs cost 62 runs. Lalor conceded four boundaries and two sixes as he got his length horribly wrong to Weatherald who made his fastest ever BBL half-century off just 24 balls. Gibson played an excellent hand making 43 not out off 31 balls. Rashid Khan did not face a ball in the innings for the second straight game. Finch bizarrely elected not to bowl out Imad or Noor. Both delivered just three overs while Lalor's four cost 51.Frustrated FinchThe skipper's horror run continued with a first-ball duck. Having been run out at the non-striker's end in the last game via a well-struck straight drive from teammate Shaun Marsh, he added a strangle down the leg side first ball from Harry Conway to his run of outs. He tossed his helmet down the race in frustration. With Marsh and Rilee Rossouw absent the Renegades turned to the future with Harvey and Harper combining for a 67-run stand. They took 34 off the powerplay climbing into the Strikers quicks with powerful strikes square of the wicket. They looked set to claim the Bash Boost point and set up the chase.Danny Briggs is congratulated by his team-mates•Getty ImagesStrangled by spinTheir good work was undone against the Strikers spin duo. Rashid Khan and Danny Briggs delivered four overs for just 16 runs in the first 10 overs of the chase. Harvey was dropped at deep midwicket by Renshaw in the 8th over trying to find a rare boundary. Harper fell in the second ball of the 10th, bowled behind his legs having exposed leg stump to Briggs trying to sweep fine. The Renegades needed just four runs for the Bash Boost point at that moment and they couldn't get them. It sparked another panicked collapse. Harvey skied another ball and Carey held it beautifully running back with the flight to give Agar his first scalp. He would pick up two more as the Renegades lost 9 for 44 in another dismal display.

Another Nunes situation: Wolves at risk of losing £50m "warrior"

Wolverhampton Wanderers have enjoyed some joy in the transfer market so far this summer, managing to sign talents such as Pedro Lima and Rodrigo Gomes, while making Tommy Doyle’s loan move from Manchester City a permanent one.

Things are gearing up nicely for Gary O’Neil and his side as they look to crack the top half of the Premier League table next season.

Wolves manager Gary O'Neil before a Premier League game.

The main question is, can he prevent his prized assets from departing the club this summer?

Wolves could lose one of their best players this summer

Joao Gomes is the man who is in high demand as of late, with several teams showing interest in signing the Old Gold midfielder.

Joao Gomes for Wolves

According to Brazilian journalist Valentin Furlan, Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are all showing plenty of admiration for the former Flamengo midfielder.

He states that Wolves are not opposed to letting him leave during the current window, and they could demand a transfer fee in the region of £50m to do so.

If O’Neil did sell Gomes in the next few weeks, it wouldn’t be the first time they have lost one of their finest players to a member of the Premier League elite, as Matheus Nunes joined Manchester City last summer after a single season in the Midlands.

Wolves could face another Matheus Nunes situation

The Old Gold signed the Portuguese midfielder from Sporting Club in 2022 for a club-record fee, and he went on to make 41 appearances for the Midlands side before being lured to City in the summer of 2023.

While they made a profit on the player, it is not something which the club will want to undergo again, losing talented youngsters the moment they start to perform and showcase their true potential.

Gomes only cost the Molineux outfit £15m in January 2023 and has since gone on to make a total of 49 appearances since then, emerging as a key player throughout the 2023/24 campaign.

Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes celebrates

Among his teammates, Gomes ranked sixth for key passes per game (0.6) along with ranking first for tackles per game (3.8) in the Premier League last term.

His defensive skills were impressive, and he even ranks in the top 1% when compared to his positional peers for tackles per 90 (4.35) among those in the top five European leagues, showcasing how effective he can be in the middle of the pitch.

It is perhaps no surprise to hear him being described as a “warrior” by football talent scout Jacek Kulig in 2021, as he emerged as a prodigious talent for Flamengo.

Losing him would be a big blow for the club as they seek to improve on a solid debut season under O’Neil.

While they would most certainly receive a substantial fee for the Brazilian, O’Neil’s preference will surely be to keep the midfield dynamo ahead of the 2024/25 campaign, especially if he seeks to break into the top half of the league table.
