"I’m hearing" – Fabrizio Romano shares new manager update out of Man Utd

Manchester United remain in managerial limbo with Erik ten Hag, but may be edging closer to a decision on that front ahead of the summer transfer window.

FA Cup win for Ten Hag gives Ratcliffe a headache

A 2-1 win over Manchester City at Wembley appears to have bought Ten Hag some time. Reports ahead of the showpiece claimed that the club were ready to sack the Dutchman in the wake of the game, but a surprise win has seemingly forced the hierarchy to reconsider since, and Ten Hag has remained in charge of the club.

It is still as yet unclear whether this was a permanent stay, or simply a stay of execution for the former Ajax boss following an awful Premier League season which saw them finish eighth, but Ten Hag was keen to stress that perhaps the Red Devils need him as much as the other way round.

"The team is progressing, and we are winning trophies. Two trophies in two years is not bad. Three finals is not bad, but we have to keep going. I'm not satisfied with it", he explained after the game.

"We have to do better and if they don't want me anymore, then I'll go anywhere else to win trophies because that is what I have done my whole career."

His words may well have resonated with Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS, if the latest report is anything to go by.

The latest from Old Trafford

Now, reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed that the situation remains "quite open", with Manchester United still eyeing up alternative managers as they try to plot a course this summer, but as yet, not having decided to sack Ten Hag.

The Red Devils were thought to be among the clubs keen on Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna, but he has since signed a new contract at Portman Road to keep him at the East Anglian outfit this summer.

Beyond him, United have also been linked with moves for Roberto de Zerbi and Mauricio Pochettino, as well as England boss Gareth Southgate, though no progress has been made on deals for any of them.

As per Romano, though, talks continue behind the scenes, with the transfer guru explaining to GiveMeSport in the last 24 hours:

“The internal review is still ongoing, so Erik ten Hag is waiting for Manchester United to communicate their decision. Let's see as also in the last three to four days, I'm hearing that Manchester United had new conversations with some agents and representatives of other managers."

“So the situation remains quite open. I think they are assessing all the potential options in order to decide whether it's better to continue with Ten Hag or go for another manager.”

Hardly a show of faith in Ten Hag, the current situation appears to be one of hedging their bets, with United keen to court another manager but not lose their current boss in case they fail to lure another name into the Old Trafford hot seat this summer. However, with the summer transfer window opening soon, more clarity may be forthcoming on the situation in the days to come.

Offer submitted: Newcastle now make £35m bid to sign "high level" star

After their seventh placed finish in the Premier League saw them narrowly miss out on European football, Newcastle United's mission for this summer will be to assemble a team that can break into the top six and beyond next season.

St. James' Park braced for incomings this summer

Reinforcements in defence appear to be at the forefront of the Magies' plans for the transfer window. Newcastle had long courted a move for Fulham centre back Tosin Adarabioyo, however the 26-year-old now looks set to sign for Chelsea. After missing out on their main target, the Magpies are rumoured to be interested in a move for Swedish defender Dean Huijsen who spent last season on loan at Roma.

Newcastle are also set to confirm the signing of Lloyd Kelly in the coming days. The English defender is available on a free transfer this summer after his deal with Bournemouth expired at the end of last season. There also reports suggesting that the Magpies are eager to bolster their attack with a move for Brentford's Bryan Mbuemo too.

With Newcastle clearly desperate to bring in new players all over the pitch, attention has now turned to a position that was a thorn in Eddie Howe's side for much of last season.

Newcastle submit bid for Valencia goalkeeper

As first reported by Sport Witness, the Spanish press are suggesting that Newcastle have submitted a bid for Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili. The Magpies' interest in the Georgian shot stopper has long been known however, this latest development has seen a formal bid for the player confirmed.

The outlet suggests that Newcastle have submitted an offer of £35million for Mamardashvili's services with this fee likely enough to get the deal over the line, sitting just over their asking price.

Newcastle suffered something of a crisis between the sticks last season with first choice keeper Nick Pope limited to just fifteen appearances owing to a shoulder injury. Martin Dubravka stepped up in his absence, but it is clear that those at the top of the club want to sign a new number one this summer, or a challenger for Pope at the very least.

After starting in all but one game last season, Mamardashvili would offer the solidity in net that Newcastle spent much of last season crying out for. Not only would the 6 foot 5 Georgian be reliable, but he would also be a quality addition to the Magpies' side.

Valencia goalkeeperGiorgi Mamardashvili.

Since joining Valencia permanently in 2022, Mamardashvili has gone on to cement himself as the side's number one. Speaking to the press back in April, Valencia boss Ruben Baraja was full of praise for his goalkeeper: "You need a goalkeeper who earns you points, like Giorgi.

"I think he is an established goalkeeper, with a great career, who is at a high level. The data confirms it. We don't know his ceiling, he has continuous growth."

If Newcastle are to go one better next season and secure European football, signing a highly rated keeper like Mamardashvili would be a major step towards breaking into the top six again.

Aston Villa told they can sign star who Pep called "brilliant" for £30m

Aston Villa could be in the market to add a new centre-forward to their playing squad during the summer transfer window to replace Jhon Duran.

The Colombia international is reportedly closing in on a move to Premier League rivals Chelsea, which would leave a gap behind Ollie Watkins in Unai Emery's attack.

Sporting director Monchi is said to be lining up a swoop to sign Kelechi Iheanacho on a free transfer when his contract at Leicester City expires at the end of the month, and has already had a meeting with the player's representatives.

Leicester City strikerKelechi Iheanacho.

What Villa could do, however, is bring in a versatile attacker who can play in multiple positions across the frontline, rather than signing a winger and a striker as two separate deals.

That may be their intention with one of the latest players to have been linked with a move to Villa Park, as they are reportedly eyeing up a former Manchester City star.

Aston Villa told asking price for Barcelona attacker

According to the printed edition of The Sunday Express (16/06/24), via TBRFootball, Aston Villa are one of four Premier League clubs interested in a deal to sign Barcelona forward Ferran Torres this summer.

The report claims that the Spanish giants need to cash in on the Spain international in order to fund their own business, as they would like to submit an offer of £20m to sign full-back Joao Cancelo from Manchester City.

It states that Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United, Newcastle United, and Villa have all been put on red alert by the news of his availability, and they could now swoop to land the versatile attacker.

This suggests that there will be plenty of competition to sign the talented gem, who won the Premier League two times during his spell at The Etihad earlier in his career. The report adds that the 24-year-old star is set to be available for a fee of £30m, although it remains to be seen whether or not the Villans are prepared to pay it.

Why Aston Villa should sign Ferran Torres

Firstly, the Spanish ace is a versatile forward who can cover multiple positions, as he has played 39 games or more in his career as a centre-forward, as a right-winger, and as a left-winger respectively.

This could make him a very useful addition to the squad to replace Duran due to his ability to offer Emery an option out wide or through the middle when needed.

As you can see in the table above, both players offer a decent goal threat off the bench but the Spain international could provide more as a creative outlet for his team. Torres, who was once hailed as "brilliant" by Pep Guardiola during his time with City, would also come in with experience in the Premier League, having produced nine goals in 28 top-flight games for the English giants.

Therefore, the £30m-rated ace could be a shrewd addition to the squad to provide quality depth ahead of the Champions League and Premier League campaign to come for Villa.

The United States men's national team star is currently on international duty and he is set to return to Italy just two days before AC Milan's upcoming Serie A clash against Udinese. Per La Gazzetta dello Sport, manager Fonseca is worried that he might not get Pulisic at his very best in their next Serie A fixture as the player will have very little time to prepare for the game after a long journey from Mexico to Milan. The former Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund winger is off to a flying start in the 2024-25 campaign having scored five times and providing two assists in seven league appearances.

While the Rossoneri boss remains concerned about the star player's fitness, new USMNT manager Mauricio Pochettino heaped praise on the attacker as he spoke highly of the player's current run of form. However, the former Tottenham coach remained cautious ahead of the national team's upcoming games as he stressed the importance of protecting a player of Pulisic's stature.

WHAT MAURICIO POCHETTINO SAID

Speaking to reporters ahead of his first game in charge of the USA, Pochettino said, "I think he's a fantastic player, one of the best offensive players in the world. I think that we are a little bit worried that sometimes we need to protect [Pulisic].

"We see because he arrived a little bit tired, but that is a thing that I told him before is to build a very good relationship with the club and try to help. And when we really need him, he needs to be in form, happy, strong and the quality is there because he has an enormous talent."

Man Utd warning as Chelsea agree to pay £60m price for Erik ten Hag target

Chelsea have agreed to pay £60 million for a "wonderful" player after holding talks with his agents, and they've moved ahead of Man Utd in the race to sign him this summer as a result.

Maresca set for busy summer as Chelsea hold negotiations for forwards

Fabrizio Romano has tipped Chelsea to have a busy summer transfer window, following their appointment of Enzo Maresca to replace the departed Mauricio Pochettino.

They've already put pen to paper on a deal for defender Tosin Adarabioyo on a free transfer from Fulham, who will come in to help fill the void left by Thiago Silva's exit, but Chelsea are now turning their attention towards signing a forward or two.

Maresca's side, as widely reported, have been locked in talks to sign Jhon Duran from Aston Villa. Chelsea are in ongoing negotiations over a deal for Duran, but are believed to be stalling the move due to Villa's demands.

They could even walk away from the Colombian and pursue other targets, with RB Leipzig star Lois Openda emerging as an alternative to Duran for Chelsea. Amid their pursuit of a striker, whether it be Duran, Openda or another name, they're also reportedly pushing to sign Crystal Palace star Michael Olise.

The 22-year-old, upon returning from a season-delaying injury last term, racked up an impressive 10 goals and six assists in 19 Premier League appearances. Olise's top-flight pedigree has been highlighted on a consistent basis at Selhurst Park, with former manager Roy Hodgson calling the player an "enormous talent".

“In the first-half he was a figure on the right but he wasn’t creating chances or showing aggression in his play. In the second-half he got it all right in both defence and attack and he showed what a wonderful player he is," said Hodgson on Olise after a performance against Leeds in 2023.

“I have seen him for 10 days less than I have seen the others. What I make of him is that I think he is an enormous talent – he has got a great possibility to have a wonderful career and a wonderful future. We can only hope we at Crystal Palace can give him that platform.”

Chelsea agree to pay £60 million for Olise in warning to Man Utd

As per Foot Mercato, a very promising update has come to light on his potential move to Stamford Bridge. Indeed, Chelsea have been locked in talks with the player's representatives, but Man Utd are also in the picture and named as one of the "serious candidates" to sign him.

However, the Red Devils are now in real danger of missing out on him. Foot Mercato say that United don't want to pay the attacker's price tag, and this has put Maresca's side in pole position. By contrast, Chelsea have agreed to pay £60 million to sign Olise this summer – a figure which Erik ten Hag and co don't want to meet. The Blues appear to hold all the cards as things stand, and it will come as good news for their new manager.

Mead spoke candidly on the pressure Arsenal's players are feeling in the wake of Saturday's 2-1 defeat to Chelsea in the Women's Super League. The defeat left Eidevall's side sixth in the WSL and already five points behind leaders Manchester City. Furthermore, the Gunners were recently beaten comfortably by Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Eidevall is under real pressure to keep his job after the Gunners' underwhelming start to the season, which already leaves them with a lot of work to do if they are to win the WSL. It's led to plenty of attention on the north London side, which Mead doesn't believe is helping the players as she called for more support.

  • WHAT MEAD SAID

"Players just need a bit more confidence, we're in a tough place at the moment, people need to help us a little bit," the Lionesses star told Hayters. "I think there's not so many nice things being said about us as a team right now and it's not the place or the time for doing that for us, we need to be picked up. We are really trying as players, trying to sort it out on and off the pitch and that's all we can do, keep going, keep believing in each other, stick together and hopefully the results will start coming.

"We've got to concentrate on ourselves as players, and as a collective we're sticking together. The rest of it will sort of speak and sort itself out."

Arsenal created 20 chances against Chelsea and Mead believes they were unfortunate not to get more from the game.

"Disappointment and frustration," she added. "I thought arguably we were the better team throughout the whole game. We haven't seemed to have had a lot of luck at the moment as a team. I'm really proud of the team for what they put out on the pitch – it's been a tough week, a draining week, a busy week."

KKR and Sunil Narine 'surprised' after being placed on warning list

The offspinner will be suspended if he’s reported again in the tournament

Nagraj Gollapudi12-Oct-2020Kolkata Knight Riders have expressed “surprise” about their premier offspinner Sunil Narine being reported for suspect action in the match against Kings XI Punjab on October 10. Narine was placed on a “warning list” by the IPL, which said the offspinner would be “suspended” in case he were to be reported again this tournament.According to the Knight Riders, even Narine was surprised at being reported at the halfway stage of the tournament because there were “no concerns” expressed by any match officials in the five previous outings prior to the Kings XI match.”This [Narine being reported for suspect action] came as a surprise to the franchise and Mr. Narine, considering he has played over 115 games in the IPL since 2012 and as many as 68 games since 2015, when he was last reported during the IPL season for a suspect action before being subsequently cleared completely by SRASSC, an ICC accredited facility,” the franchise said in a media statement on Monday. “Furthermore, he was playing his sixth game this season, with no concerns expressed formally or informally by the match officials so far.”The IPL said Narine’s suspect action was reported by the on-field umpires Chris Gaffeney and Ulhas Gandhe. However, the IPL did not specify which type of delivery/deliveries Narine was reported for.ESPNcricinfo LtdThe franchise has not indicated whether Narine would feature in the match against Royal Challengers Bangalore on Monday evening.Narine, the most successful bowler for the Knight Riders in IPL, was one of the two players retained by the franchise in 2018 along with Andre Russell. So far this IPL, while his batting returns have diminished, Narine has been instrumental with the ball, particularly in the death overs.Narine played the winning hand in the two-run victory against Kings XI by defending 14 in the final over.As per IPL rules Narine’s bowling action for the type of delivery/deliveries reported would be reviewed and corrected if necessary. Narine can continue to bowl the type of delivery/deliveries he was pulled up for, but will be suspended if reported again. The Knight Riders, however, remain optimistic about resolving the issue soon.”We are respectful of the process that the IPL has put in place to have his action reviewed, and are working closely with the IPL in this matter. We are hopeful that there would be an appropriate resolution quickly. We appreciate the cooperation being extended by the IPL in expediting this matter.”
