49ers not wasting time: Leeds make contact to sign 25 y/o int’l for Farke

Leeds United and the 49ers Enterprises have already made an enquiry for a summer signing following their Championship playoff final defeat to Southampton.

Leeds transfer plans after Southampton defeat

The Whites and Daniel Farke are now preparing for another season in the second tier following a 1-0 defeat at Wembley on Sunday, with another busy summer in regards to incomings and outgoings now expected.

The next Gray: Leeds could soften Gnonto exit by unleashing academy star

Leeds United could look towards their youth if Wilfried Gnonto ends up exiting Elland Road.

ByKelan Sarson May 29, 2024

Speaking to Sky Sports, Leeds chairman Paraag Marathe said there are "going" to be some departures and arrivals ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

“We are well capitalised from an investment standpoint. We have the funds that we need to do what we need to do. The reality of being in the Championship is that Profitability and Sustainability (P&S) plays a role. We also inherited a challenging situation, so naturally there are going to be some trade-offs. But also, we have a really good team, and it is not just about outs, but ins. We're looking at scouting possibilities and players that we can bring in. We will have to make some trade-offs because of P&S but we have the investment commitment to do what we need to do.”

Crysencio Summerville, Wilfried Gnonto and Archie Gray have already been linked with moves away from Yorkshire, however, it looks as if plans are already being put in place to finally bring a 2023 target to the club.

Leeds make Ao Tanaka enquiry

Last year, Leeds were heavily linked with signing midfielder Ao Tanaka but ended up bringing in both Glen Kamara and Ilia Gruev. The links to the Japan international have now returned, with reports from Hochi News stating that Leeds have already enquired to sign Tanaka this summer alongside Borussia Monchengladbach, FC Mainz and Everton.

It is increasingly likely that Tanaka will leave Fortuna Duesseldorf after they failed to win promotion to the Bundesliga, throwing away a three-goal lead in a two-legged promotion final against Bochum.

Tanaka, who appears to be at the top of his game with a career-high Transfermarkt valuation, can play in holding or attacking roles but is primarily a box-to-box midfielder, so could provide Farke with plenty of versatility next season alongside the likes of Kamara, Gruev, Ampadu and potentially Gray. He caught the eye of Josh Bunting during the 2022 World Cup as well for his “effective” displays, with the journalist saying:

The 25-year-old has plenty of experience in the German second division, making 91 appearances for his current employers, and by the looks of it, he could be on the move this summer, whether that be with Leeds remains to be seen.

£50k-p/w player "closer than ever" to leaving Leeds for £0 in financial hit

Leeds United could be forced to let one of their players leave for nothing this summer, it has emerged, after a clause in their contract came to light.

Championship beckons for Leeds

A 1-0 loss at Wembley to Southampton on Sunday ensured that Leeds will be playing Championship football once more next season, and continued their wretched curse of never having been promoted via the playoffs.

After the game, Daniel Farke rued the lack of precision from his side, admitting that he felt his team "were not the worse side".

"I can’t really say we are the worst side in this final and to lose this final hurts a lot. In the final third, we were not fully committed to the attack. We were not over-precise with the pass."

But the knock on effect that promotion failure is likely to have at Elland Road could be the real tragedy, with players seemingly already lining up at the exit door and Leeds needing to sell before they can buy anyone with a massive £73.5m of transfer fees still owed this summer.

Crysencio Summerville, the Championship player of the year, seems primed to leave ahead of the new season amid Premier League interest, while Wilfried Gnonto is another that is likely to depart, and question marks remain over whether Joe Rodon can be signed permanently or if they can keep hold of budding superstar Archie Gray. Now, a decision made 12 months ago could force a financial hit.

Leeds loanee free to leave again

That decision comes regarding midfielder Marc Roca, who was signed during Leeds' time as a Premier League club for a fee of £10m and who became an integral part of the Whites midfield in their final top flight season.

Marc Roca for Leeds United.

However, he was allowed to leave on loan last summer rather than stay to fight for promotion, and the former Bayern Munich midfielder made the move to Real Betis, where he has started 24 times this season. The move was likely sanctioned to help preserve his value for a potential sale this summer, while it also took his £50,000 a week wages off the books at Elland Road.

However, as Roca himself revealed, another clause was inserted which may be set to cost Leeds any money this summer.

“There is a clause like this year. If Leeds is not in the Premier League, I can go on loan again. Let’s see. It depends on whether they go up or not," the Spaniard explained.

“They are things out of my control. I sincerely want you to go up, because I wish all the teams I have been in and wish you the best. I am grateful to them, I wish them the best, it has been my home, and from there we will see.”

Leeds could sign "monster" Kamara replacement who was at Wembley on Sunday

Leeds United will attempt to still get this bold deal over the line despite not winning promotion.

ByKelan Sarson May 28, 2024

And with Leeds having failed to be promoted, a loan move is on the cards again, and local media outlets [via sport witness] reveal that a deal is now "closer than ever", meaning the Whites will miss out on the €12m (£10m) fee a permanent transfer would have netted.

When Roca returns from his second stint away, he will only have 12 months left on his contract at Elland Road, which will likely see the Whites fail to recoup even close to their initial outlay on the Spaniard. All in all, it has turned into a disastrous move for the Yorkshire side from a financial perspective.

England Women have appointed former Western Australia and Tasmania seamer Tim Macdonald as senior assistant coach.Macdonald – who previously worked with England Women’s head coach Lisa Keightley at Perth Scorchers and Western Fury – took up the role on an interim basis for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup earlier this year and will now take up the post full-time.The 39-year-old Macdonald joined the England Women’s squad’s bio-secure training camp at the Incora County Ground, in Derby, on Tuesday.”I’ve known Tim for a while and I’ve worked with him previously and I knew what skills he would bring to the group, especially with the fast bowlers,” Keightley said. “He was a great addition across the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in Australia and when it came to interview he was the stand-out candidate in terms of helping the team continue their improvement.”Although plans for England’s international schedule are yet to be finalised, Heather Knight’s side are expected to host South Africa after India pulled out of a proposed tri-series. ODI and T20I fixtures are likely to be scheduled for September. The ECB has been working to salvage its programme of women’s cricket in the wake of Covid-19 impacting much of the summer. Centrally contracted England players returned to training in June, with the confirmation of South Africa’s tour expected in the coming weeks.

Rico was discharged from hospital later that summer, but it has been a long road back to full fitness and finding a new club. Now, he's completing a medical at Qatari club Al Gharafa and looks set to join up for a new challenge.

The move to Qatar represents a fresh start, although there's no denying the Qatari league will be a drop-off in quality from what Rico is used to.

After his accident, Rico fell into a coma for three weeks and was reportedly described as being "half a centimetre" from death. Given the extent of the injury, which kept him in hospital for three months, it's remarkable that Rico is back in the game at all.

Kompany tells Bayern to sign £250k-p/w "top class" Man City man immediately

Vincent Kompany is keen to use his newfound wealth at Bayern Munich to make a move for one of his former side's stars this summer, with the Manchester City icon having identified a defender as a priority signing this summer.

Kompany makes shock switch

After suffering relegation with Burnley in a Premier League season in which his side won just five games, a move to Bayern Munich was not what anyone expected for Vincent Kompany this summer.

The Belgian boss, who was previously at Anderlecht and who helped Burnley out of the Championship last season, has been endorsed by Pep Guardiola but struggled to get results at Turf Moor, leaving his side sliding back into England's second tier just 12 months after leaving it.

That prompted Bayern, who have missed out on a whole host of managers this summer, to come knocking as they look to reverse the Bayer Leverkusen dominance that they suffered this season and that ultimately left them trophyless.

Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane

“I'm looking forward to the challenge of FC Bayern. It's a great honour to be able to work for this club – FC Bayern is an institution in international football", Kompany said when he was unveiled by the Bavarian giants.

Now, he is already getting stuck in and has reportedly identified his priority signings, including one from former club Manchester City.

Man City star on Kompany's radar

That comes in the shape of one time teammate John Stones, who has fallen down the pecking order at the Etihad this season.

Suffering an injury-hit campaign, the Englishman made just 12 Premier League starts and was an unused substitute on a further 11 occasions, a dramatic fall from grace from his starring role in the treble winning campaign the year before.

Though he still has two years left to run on his £250,000 a week deal in Manchester, the Englishman has reportedly been considering his options, and may now have been given a way out.

That is because reports from Spain claim that Kompany has made Stones his "priority" this summer as he looks to leave his mark on Bayern, and he believes that Stones' versatility would make him a "valuable" signing.

The pair know each other well, having played together for several years at the Etihad, and Kompany has been full of praise for his former defensive partner in the past.

"I've always said John is one of the most talented defenders. He's got such a bright future", the Belgian explained in 2019. "He's just a top-class defender. If now he gets to play games things will sort themselves out, no doubt."

With Kim Min-Jae having flattered to deceive at the Allianz Arena, and Dayot Upamecano still error-prone, Bayern have been forced to turn to emergency signing Eric Dier more often than not at the heart of their defence, and though the Englishman has produced some excellent performances, his deficiencies are well known.

Stones would certainly elevate the Bayern backline, though it is unclear whether the club would be willing to pay the fee that City would surely demand for the Englishman this summer.

Erik ten Hag's last stand: Man Utd's bumbling manager must beat Aston Villa to save his job – lose & INEOS will have no choice but to put Dutchman out of his misery

The Dutchman has one last chance to prove he is the right man to lead the Red Devils forward, but another humiliation could await at Villa Park.

It's some sort of minor miracle that Erik ten Hag is still employed by Manchester United.

There have been far, too many points of infamy over the last 12 months of his Old Trafford reign. The Coventry City FA Cup semi-final, the 100th-minute collapse at Chelsea, leading Brentford on minute 96 before being pegged back on minute 98, the Selhurst Park massacre, thrashing after thrashing and humbling after humbling.

It would be difficult for players of Football Manager and EAFC to recreate these ludicrous feats in fictional worlds, let alone allow them to play out in reality.

Every time you think the Red Devils have turned a corner, they lurch back into habits of old. There is no learning from past failures, only the doom to repeat them.

And so United are stuck in a loop. Ten Hag supposedly has one more chance to break that cycle – or else it will surely be his head on the chopping block.

Getty Images Sport'One game to save his job'

United have opened the season with a measly three wins from nine across all competitions, including two from six in the Premier League. Those victories have come against Fulham, newly-promoted Southampton and League One outfit Barnsley – hardly an all-star cast.

Ten Hag's notion that his side can compete with the best in the world on their day has come undone already this term. Both Liverpool and Tottenham have effectively walked into Old Trafford, sat the hosts down and tied them to a chair with duct tape while they ransacked the place. No no, you help yourselves to more goals, chaps.

The Sun now report that Ten Hag has only one more chance to prove he is the man for the job. If his side fail to get a result at Aston Villa on Sunday, then it could be curtains for him.

AdvertisementAFPCompetence vs incompetence

There have been many, many think-pieces calling out Ten Hag for failing to instil an identity upon his United team.

Few have come to recognise that the Red Devils' inability to stay out of their own way who they are.

All of United's major wins and results since the start of last season have come as a result of their baffling tactics somehow swinging back in their favour. When games are purposely chaotic and without control, then sometimes you might just strike it lucky. It isn't a sustainable tactic for a serious football team.

Take their two fixtures against Villa last season, for example. Unai Emery's men, at that point, were a little overeager as they pursued a top-four finish, and twice allowed United to grow into open games, with Ten Hag's men doing the double over the Villans.

If Ten Hag is hoping for a similar game this Sunday, though, he will be sorely mistaken. Villa have managed to mature quickly in recent months and are riding a wave of confidence after beating Bayern Munich in the Champions League earlier this week.

The hostile Villa Park atmosphere has contributed to some of the hosts' most impressive results under Emery, who has issued a rallying cry ahead of this weekend's match.

"On Sunday, we will need the same atmosphere with the supporters at Villa Park like on Wednesday," he said.

"I have no doubt they will be there to help and support us to transmit their energy so we can get three points. Manchester United, it is a very difficult match. The players must be really focused to get a strong structure tactically, defensively and offensively."

Getty Images SportSuperstar Duran could land fatal blow

Labelling Jhon Duran a 'superstar' for his 2024-25 exploits is both under and over-selling him. Sure, it's still only October, but at times he has performed beyond even 'superstar' and instead looked more 'superhuman'.

The Colombian is thriving and feasting so far this season, with six goals – most of them absolute worldies to boot – in nine games.

Samu Omorodion made mincemeat of United's defenders on Thursday night, and the almost too-obvious outcome this Sunday is for Duran to run them similarly ragged.

The scary thing for United is Duran isn't even Villa's first-choice striker, with Ollie Watkins still head honcho. But the 20-year-old's introduction from the bench is inevitable, and boy is he going to be licking his lips at the prospect of tearing through a tired defence.

Getty Images SportLosing the dressing room?

What is already an uphill battle for Ten Hag could become an almighty mutiny if he isn't careful.

He has spent over £600m in three years assembling a team that is firmly his. No longer can he claim that he is adjusting his tactics to suit the need of a squad not totally in his image.

And yet he is running the risk of disillusioning some of his closest allies in the dressing room.

He hooked his new centre-back pairing of Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martinez – both of whom he worked with at Ajax – during Thursday's draw with Porto, while Marcus Rashford came in for criticism post-match.

"I have to watch it back and over the left side, definitely we didn't defend well tonight," Ten Hag said. "Marcus also played a part in this but as I say, it had to do with [Alejandro] Garnacho coming on – and nothing against Rashford."

Meanwhile, after Christian Eriksen claimed FC Twente players wanted it more than United's in last week's 1-1 draw, Harry Maguire blamed the squad's fragile mentality for letting the lead slip at Porto.

"I think it's more the mental issue [conceding twice in quick succession] and it's something we have to overcome. It probably starts with belief," Maguire said.

"When we go 2-0 up and concede, does the belief go a little bit between the boys that we can go on and win the game here? So it's something we need to be aware of."

Man Utd want to sign £70m star who could help turn Hojlund into a monster

Finishing eighth in the table for a club like Manchester United is a disgrace, but arguably the worst statistic to come out of this season is their goal difference of -1.

The defence has been highlighted as a big issue, but the attack has also been uninspiring, and despite the performances of Amad Diallo in recent weeks – who scored against Newcastle – the right-wing role has been a problem position this season.

Amad Diallo for Manchester United

With Antony netting just one Premier League goal all campaign, Alejandro Garnacho has filled the void, but he’s better suited to a spot on the left.

With that in mind, it’s no surprise to see that Sir Jim Ratcliffe is keen to sign a new right-sided winger this summer, with one player potentially holding the keys to unlocking Rasmus Hojlund’s true potential.

Man United want to sign a new right-winger

According to a report from Fabrizio Romano who was speaking to GiveMeSport, Man United “would like to sign” Michael Olise this summer.

Regardless of whether United are able to sign the attacker, it’s predicated that he will be moving on from Crystal Palace this summer after an impressive season.

Newcastle United and Arsenal are said to be the competition, while Chelsea could return after failing to sign him last year.

Olise has a clause in his contract that would enable a buyout, but it reportedly stands at £70m as per Football Insider, which obviously doesn’t make him a cheap option.

Why Olise could turn Hojlund into a monster

Despite receiving plenty of criticism throughout the campaign, Hojlund should be relatively pleased with his first season as a United player.

The 21-year-old striker has gone through spells of drought over the last year, but he’s still racked up an impressive 16 goals across all competitions, including ten in the Premier League and five in the Champions League.

What makes this output so remarkable is the lack of support and service he’s received all season, boasting an xG of just 7.64 in the league.

A player who could certainly boost the number of opportunities that the Dane receives is Olise, who’s proven to be one of the best players in the Premier League this season.

As you can see from the table above, Olise completely wipes the floor with Antony in every single metric, but he does that to most Premier League wingers given his percentile.

Despite most of his season being disrupted by a hamstring injury, the French attacker has been absolutely unstoppable, scoring ten goals and providing six assists in just 14 Premier League starts.

What makes the 22-year-old so deadly is that he’s an incredibly unpredictable player who can serve as both a creative outlet and a goal scorer simultaneously.

Olise is a complete player who boats insane technical ability via his passing and direct dribbling, with his trademark move being a cut inside onto his deadly left foot, as witnessed by United recently when he netted twice.

This level of chance creation would have a tremendous impact on Hojlund’s performance, particularly because he ranks in the top 2% for crosses, which, considering the Dane's physicality, he thrives on.

Furthermore, the former Reading player can thrive in any game state, whether that be on the counterattack or against a low block, which would make him a perfect fit for the team, even if Erik ten Hag is no longer at the club next season.

Crystal Palace star Michael Olise.

Overall, Man United must sign Olise this summer. He could become the face of the rebuild, and he could just become United’s own version of Phil Foden, given that he’s classed as a similar player to Olise by FBref.

Man Utd struck gold on exceptional star who's now worth more than Olise
