Man United Handed Potential Transfer Boost

Sofyan Amrabat has turned down offers from Saudi Arabia as his priority is a switch to Manchester United, according to Fabrizio Romano

The Moroccan midfielder looks set to depart Fiorentina this summer.

What is the latest Sofyan Amrabat news?

It seems the midfielder has made his decision on his future.

According to a report from L'Equipe, the Fiorentina player was a target for Saudi Arabian side Al-Ahli, who wanted to add him to their squad which includes new signings Edouard Mendy, Riyad Mahrez, Roberto Firmino and Allan Saint-Maximin. The report also stated that the Moroccan was set to make his decision on his preferred destination in the following days, and that his current club had resigned themselves to the fact that he was to depart this summer.

United have been long time admirers of Amrabat, having tried to bring in the midfielder back in the January window following his impressive performances during the World Cup that saw him get named in the World Cup Team of the Tournament.

The deal never happened and Amrabat remained with Fiorentina for the rest of the season, which was a campaign that saw him lose out in both the Coppa Italia final and the Europa Conference League final. Red Devils manager Erik ten Hag previously worked with the defensive midfielder at Utrecht, and is pushing for the club to complete the transfer.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano revealed that Amrabat had turned down the offer from Saudi Arabia, as he is focused on completing a switch to the Red Devils. The Italian journalist also stated that United are waiting on the sales for Fred and Van de Beek to fund the transfer.

"Sofyan Amrabat, rumoured as potential target for Al Ahli last week, from what I understand, he does not want to negotiate with Al Ahli, but also all Saudi clubs as his priority now is Europe. Sofyan Amrabat wants to go to Man United, so he rejected very important financial approaches from Saudi because he wants to wait for Man United.

"As I always told you, there is no official bid to Fiorentina as they have to sell Fred, and it’s not going to be to Galatasaray from what I’m told, so other clubs are keen on Fred. But also, Donny Van de Beek, the conversation with Real Sociedad is ongoing, so Man United wait to sell one between Van de Beek and Fred before proceeding, but both will leave guys by the end of the summer, and then they will proceed with a bid for Amrabat, that is the plan at the moment."

Who do Man United have to sell for Amrabat?

There are two midfielders who could depart Old Trafford this summer to create the space for Amrabat.

One name Romano mentioned was Fred. The 30-year-old has seen his role reduced at United under ten Hag, and with the arrival of Mason Mount as well as the potential signing of Amrabat, opportunities would be even further limited for the Brazilian.

According to a report from 90min, Galatasaray have seen an offer rejected that fell below the asking price of £20m set by Man United, and have since pulled away according to Fabrizio Romano. Saudi clubs remain interested in the midfielder, and Fulham could reignite the interest they showed earlier on in the summer.

Fred

The other name mentioned by Romano was Van de Beek. The Dutch international has had a disappointing career at Old Trafford following his £39m switch from Ajax in 2020, having only made 60 appearances for the club during a three-year spell blighted by injury problems that have forced him to miss 52 games.

According to reports, Real Sociedad have opened talks regarding the midfielder despite concerns about the player's injury problems, with the asking price set to be £25m.

Aston Villa: Emery Must Unleash "Star In The Making" Over Signing Adama Traore

Aston Villa are reportedly eyeing a move for free agent and former player Adama Traore this summer, as Unai Emery looks to identify further additions to his squad.

The Spaniard became a free agent at the expiration of his contract at Wolves, with reports linking the 27-year-old with a return to Villa Park.

What’s the latest on Adama Traore to Aston Villa?

As reported by Football Insider last month, the Villans have set their sights on Traore, in what could be a ‘surprise move’.

While little progress in that front has been covered, journalist Rudy Galetti gave an update to GIVEMESPORT regarding the Midlands side’s potential approach to the player.

“They have real interest in the former Wolves winger Traore, who is now a free-agent and is still looking for a new club. Villa are exploring the opportunity to sign him.”

Should Aston Villa sign Adama Traore?

While the winger is well known for his strength and powerful exploits on the flank, his actual success rate in such threat is rather inconclusive.

Speaking on talkSPORT, pundit Jason Cundy asked if the Spaniard could be considered as the “most frustrating player a manager could have”, adding that his final moves in attack are “really poor”.

The concern over the former Wolves gem’s final product is supported by his lack of goal contributions throughout his stay in the Premier League, amounting to only 10 goals in 194 appearances so far.

While Villa could snatch the winger in a free deal, the 27-year-old would take up a space in the squad that could be occupied by a figure more hungry and efficient in attack than the former dud.

Wolverhampton Wanderers' former winger Adama Traore.

The Villans are blessed with an academy bustling with talent, which could become of use to Emery in instances like this where a youngster could break into the first team as opposed to burning wage money for a player with a below par track record.

One starlet that could benefit from the club avoiding a move for Traore is Omari Kellyman, who has already captured the eye of Emery in joining first-team training.

An equally versatile player in attack as the Spaniard, the 17-year-old gem was signed last year from Derby County’s academy, and has since impressed at Bodymoor Heath.

Once hailed as a “star in the making” by journalist Ashley Preece, the dynamic youngster netted three goals and registered two assists in 10 Premier League 2 appearances in claret and blue last campaign.

The teenager is highly regarded by Emery, as communicated by his inclusion in the first team’s pre-season festivities in the United States, having also featured in the squad for recent friendlies against Lazio and Valencia.

There’s an argument over the gamble in trusting rising talents to succeed in the top-flight, however, such risk is applicable to the recruitment of individuals with a history of absent form.

In swerving a move for Traore, the Spaniard could explore the talents in the academy, in a decision that could pay off more positively for the club than exerting finances and trust in a player that has already failed to impress consistently in the Premier League.

West Indies wary of resurgent Zimbabwe

Big picture

Zimbabwe’s lost son has returned, and bringing good news it seems. Brendan Taylor, Zimbabwe’s finest batsman of the last decade, and possibly ever, is back in the fold and reckons “this can be the best period of Zimbabwe cricket”. And it’s not just Taylor who has a spring in his step. Kyle Jarvis also returns to bring thoroughbred quality to the pace attack, while Hamilton Masakadza, Craig Ervine, Sean Williams and Sikandar Raza are all fairly recent Test centurions. This is turning out to be a galvanising year for Zimbabwe, following on from the team effort that brought one-day success, and nearly a Test upset, in Sri Lanka three months ago.Yet Zimbabwe will want to avoid sticking too close to the parable of the prodigal son now that Taylor and Jarvis are sure to slot straight back into the playing XI – those who stayed behind must also continue to be valued, or the return may unsettle even as it replenishes resources. It needs to be managed sensitively. After their successful tour of Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe were already in a good place as a unit. With good man management, the addition of the returning County pros will only inspirit this squad further. This feels like it could be the start of a brave new era for Zimbabwean cricket. It is continuity, rather than novelty, that West Indies are focused on. The selectors have delivered captain Jason Holder the same squad that went to England and bounced back from mediocre depths at Edgbaston to win in Leeds. West Indies found some fight on that tour, their 4-0 ODI defeat notwithstanding, and will need to retain their grit if they are to keep a resurgent Zimbabwe down.Shai Hope’s broad bat, and West Indies’ gaggle of menacing quicks, might prove to be the difference between the two sides, though Zimbabwe will try to negate West Indies’ pace advantage by preparing a pitch to suit their own slow-bowling strengths. Taylor’s return will add mettle to their middle order too, and in familiar conditions, but as West Indies coach Stuart Law pointed out ahead of the opening Test, when you bowl as fast as Shannon Gabriel it doesn’t really matter what sort of pitch you’re playing on.West Indies have lost out on automatic qualification for the next World Cup due to their one-day ranking, and they will be glad to be playing in conditions they will return to for the qualifiers in March. Their Test ranking of No. 8 could also do with some zhuzhing-up, but pride and fight are beginning to characterize this West Indies Test team, and there will be no danger of complacency for them despite the opposition.

Form guide

Zimbabwe: LLLLL (most recent first)
West Indies: LWLLW

In the spotlight

Zimbabwe have been unfortunate to lose many players of great quality in the last ten to fifteen years. Some have come back, but not many, and fewer still have found success on their return. Brendan Taylor and Kyle Jarvis‘ comeback feels different, especially as both players may yet have their best years ahead of them. Its timing is also fortuitous: Zimbabwe have vital World Cup Qualifiers coming up, at home, in the New Year, a no less crucial World Cup appearance, and a nine-team Test league to break into in 2019. The road to those goals starts here, and both players will have major roles to play.Shai Hope scored 375 runs in six innings in England, at an average of 75.00, and was the leading run-scorer on either side in the three Tests. The desiccating heat of Bulawayo will feel a long way from Headingley’s temperate green fields, but his returns will be no less important to West Indies’ success. Hope scored a one-day century at this ground on West Indies’ last tour of Zimbabwe and is an increasingly important member of his team’s middle order.

Team news

After scoring nearly 2000 runs for Nottinghamshire, including six centuries, during his international absence, Taylor slots straight back into the playing XI. Taylor scored just 123 runs in five innings, at an average of 24.60, during Notts’ Division Two Championship campaign last season, but Zimbabwe won’t be too bothered. He cracked a comeback hundred for Mid West Rhinos a few weeks ago, and should feel right at home in Zimbabwe’s middle order. Jarvis should be equally au fait with the new ball, though spin might bring more reward as this match progresses. As such, Tendai Chisoro may be in line for a Test debut to partner Graeme Cremer. Completing Zimbabwe’s new look, Solomon Mire is also a very strong contender to debut at the top of the order.Zimbabwe (possible): 1 Solomon Mire, 2 Hamilton Masakadza, 3 Craig Ervine, 4 Brendan Taylor, 5 Sean Williams, 6 Sikandar Raza, 7 Regis Chakabva (wk), 8 Graeme Cremer (capt), 9 Tendai Chisoro, 10 Kyle Jarvis, 11 Chris Mpofu.A settled unit, West Indies are likely to stick with similar combinations to those used in England, but there will be a greater importance to the performance of their leading spinner, Devendra Bishoo. Their selectors have shown faith in the likes of Kyle Hope and Shane Dowrich despite iffy returns in England, and that faith should extend into the playing XI.West Indies (possible): 1 Kraigg Brathwaite, 2 Kieran Powell, 3 Kyle Hope, 4 Shai Hope, 5 Roston Chase, 6 Jermaine Blackwood, 7 Shane Dowrich (wk), 8 Jason Holder (capt), 9 Devendra Bishoo, 10 Kemar Roach, 11 Shannon Gabriel.

Pitch and Conditions

Zimbabwe will have had a good look at the pitch that will be used for the first Test – the squad played a practice match on it last week. While not as slow and spongy as the track that West Indies played on in their own warm-up at the Bulawayo Athletic Club, the Queens track will probably play a little on the slow side and take spin despite the fact that neither of the two rounds of Logan Cup matches so far this season were played here, so it is still fairly fresh. The summer rains have not yet quite reached Zimbabwe, and the thermometer extended well beyond 30 degrees in the week before the Test. The energy-sapping heat should stick around, while there may also be a few thunderstorms about over the five days.

Stats and Trivia

  • Zimbabwe and West Indies last played a Test match more than four years ago, in Dominica. Zimbabwe have never beaten West Indies in a Test match.
  • Zimbabwe have only one Test win at Queens Sports Club, by an innings and 32 runs over Bangladesh in 2001.
  • Zimbabwe last won a Test four years ago, against Pakistan in Harare. They have since lost nine out of nine: five at home, three in Bangladesh, and one in Sri Lanka.
  • West Indies have won two of the six Test matches they have played this year.
  • Shai Hope, Kyle Hope, Roston Chase, Kieran Powell, and Kraigg Brathwaite all passed fifty in West Indies’ warm-up match.

Quotes

“We know what the Queens Sports Club wicket does. We’re trying to make the wicket suit our strengths and that’s part and parcel of playing at home. Hopefully we can use that to our advantage.”
“If you look at the squad Zimbabwe have picked, they’ve got six players who can bowl spin. The wicket here is traditionally very good for batting and spins more and more as the game goes on. Having said that, we’ve also got two or three guys who can crank it up to over 90mph and at that pace it doesn’t really matter where you’re playing, it’s hard to bat against.”

VAR Misses Big Handball in Chelsea vs Liverpool Encounter

Anthony Taylor and his team have come under fire after failing to award a penalty to Liverpool in their clash with Chelsea following what appeared to be a handball by Blues striker Nicolas Jackson.

What’s the latest on Liverpool and VAR?

The opening weekend supplied plenty of drama in the Premier League, including at Stamford Bridge on Sunday 13 August where Chelsea hosted Liverpool.

The game finished 1-1 after Luis Diaz’s 18th-minute strike was cancelled out by new Chelsea signing Axel Disasi before half-time. Both sides had also seen first-half goals chalked off for tight offsides, Mohamed Salah for the Reds and Ben Chilwell for the Blues.

Read the latest Liverpool transfer news HERE…

The Blues were the better side over the course of the 90 minutes, although neither team created a wealth of opportunities in the second half. However, Mauricio Pochettino has to settle for a point in his first competitive game in charge of his new side.

However, things could have been very different had Liverpool been awarded a penalty in the second half as a result of a handball from another new Chelsea signing Jackson.

Dominik Szoboszlai’s corner from the left-hand side was flicked towards goal by Diaz at the near post, only to hit Jackson’s hand in a raised position. While the distance between Diaz and Jackson was short, the forward’s arm was not in a natural position, despite being close to his body.

Diaz’s header looked as if it could have been heading into the far corner, with Robert Sanchez sprawling towards his left-hand side in preparation.

It proved a controversial decision, and one that Liverpool players and fans will feel hard done by.

Should Liverpool have been awarded a penalty against Chelsea?

According to VAR (via Sky Sports), a penalty was not awarded due to “the proximity [of Jackson] from the flick-on” and because “his arms and elbows are tucked into his body”.

Speaking at the end of the game, Roy Keane admitted Jackson was “a lucky boy”, despite believing it would have been harsh to give a penalty against the forward.

However, Daniel Sturridge added: “I’d have been fuming, not gonna lie. If I’m flicking that in, that’s going bottom bin that is. I’m wheeling away in jubilation maybe. He’s gonna hit the target, so as a player, when you make that connection in the box…it’s an unnatural, natural position. It is close to him, but in a way it’s a 50/50 decision, and it’s gone Chelsea’s way.”

Lewis Dunk conceded a penalty in Brighton & Hove Albion’s 4-1 win over newly-promoted Luton Town the day before for what appeared an incredibly harsh handball, with the centre-back not even facing the ball as he dives to block a cross.

Considering that decision was given and the Jackson decision wasn’t, it’s clear to see why supporters are already annoyed at a lack of consistency in decision-making by Premier League referees.

Chelsea’s clash with Liverpool also showcased some of the Premier League’s new guidlines when it comes to dissent, with both Jackson and Alexis Mac Allister being booked for waving an imaginary yellow card after being fouled, while the game also saw a greater amount of added time in both halves to make up for time-wasting.

Steyn set to return after year-long absence

Dale Steyn is expected to make a comeback to competitive cricket, after a year on the sidelines, in the Ram Slam on Wednesday. Steyn has been named in the Titans’ 13-man squad set to play the Knights in Kimberley, for their second match of the competition. The Titans beat the Lions in their opening game on Sunday, where Steyn carried drinks and reunited with his team-mates after seven years at the Cape Town-based Cobras. Steyn, whose career began up-country with the Titans, opted to return to the franchise while still recovering from the broken bone in his shoulder that has seen him spend the last 12 months out of action. In that time, Steyn has had a pin inserted into his right shoulder and overcome torn bicep and pectoral muscles. When speaking to ESPNcricinfo last month, Steyn explained how he was slowly building up his bowling loads so that he could be at 100% by the time he returns. That time, it seems, is now.To make space for Steyn in their XI, the Titans will likely have to leave out David Wiese from the side that beat the Lions. That means the Titans could boast at least six current internationals with Quinton de Kock, AB de Villiers, Farhaan Behardien, Aiden Markram, Tabraiz Shamsi and Lungi Ngidi all in the mix and Dean Elgar waiting in the wings. Morne Morkel and Chris Morris, who are recovering from a side strain and a back injury respectively, are not part of the Titans’ squad for now but are both expected to make comebacks at some stage of the Ram Slam.If all goes well with Steyn’s participation in the Ram Slam, he is expected to make a return to the national side in whites, where he needs just five wickets to overtake Shaun Pollock as South Africa’s highest Test wicket-taker. South Africa play Zimbabwe in the inaugural day-night Test over Boxing Day and then host India for three Tests. New coach Ottis Gibson has already indicated Steyn will walk back into the XI provided the man himself is confident he can get through a full Test.

Tottenham Reportedly Want To Buy £50m Striker From Rivals

Journalist Dean Jones has admitted his shock at who Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly targeting to fill their striker void

The Lilywhites recently lost club legend Harry Kane to Bayern Munich.

What is the latest news with Tottenham Hotspur?

The club are looking at attacking reinforcements after the sale of Kane

The England international departed after a long and arduous saga which saw Bayern have three offers rejected for the Premier League star. There were multiple meetings held between the club's executives for weeks as the two sides aimed to reach a compromise, and eventually, a deal was agreed last Thursday, with personal terms agreed later that evening after a delay, where it was reported that the boyhood Tottenham fan was leaning towards staying at the club after all.

harry-kane-transfer-gossip-tottenham-hotspur-postecoglou-jonathan-david-losc-lille

Ultimately, the forward finally completed his switch to the current Bundesliga champions in a deal worth a reported £100m, which reportedly could rise by £15-20m depending on add-ons, with the striker taking the iconic number 9 shirt at the Allianz Arena worn by Bayern legends such as Robert Lewandowski and Gerd Muller in the past.

The sale of their club record goalscorer has given Spurs a lot of money to work with as they look to replace the forward, and the club have been linked with a shock move for Arsenal youngster Folarin Balogun. The forward impressed on loan in Ligue 1 last season with Reims and following his return from loan has told the club that he doesn't want another loan spell or to be a backup option should he stay at the Emirates.

A number of Premier League sides, including West Ham United are reportedly fans of the player, whilst French outfit Monaco saw a verbal offer rejected by the Gunners following their pre-season friendly.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Spurs are interested in bringing the player to the club as they look to add to their attacking options following Kane's departure. So far this window, no side has been willing to match the Gunners £50m asking price, however, the Lilywhites now clearly have the funds to do so.

Speaking on The Football Terrace YouTube channel, Jones revealed his shock at the potential transfer, and how Arsenal might need to sell to their rivals in order to fund "something exciting" later in the window:

"For the outgoings, there’s still some work to be done, but it seems like stuff is about to happen, so the next week of outgoings will determine what Arsenal are able to do, but there’s the fullback problem, there’s a defensive midfielder that they still talk about being a problem in terms of depth so let’s see whether they end up doing anything there, and I think a lot will depend on what they end up doing with Balogun.

"I mean they want to get him out the door but we don’t know exactly what the terms will be around that deal at the moment, I mean he’s been talked about as a £50m transfer, even Tottenham were linked the other day, a few other Premier League clubs have been linked too but ultimately they need a big offer to arrive for Balogun to trigger something exciting for Arsenal this window."

Would Balogun be a good signing for Tottenham?

Balogun would be a risky signing with a lot of potential.

After an underwhelming loan spell with Middlesbrough during the second half of the 2021/22 season, the USA international headed to France where he really burst onto the scene. Across 37 appearances in Ligue 1, the striker managed 21 goals and two assists, whilst also averaging one key pass and 1.6 shots on target per game.

Furthermore, the Arsenal loanee ranked in the top 10% in shots on goal and progressive passes received compared to other strikers across the top five European leagues, showcasing that not only is he a strong finisher but a forward who also has the capability to link up with his fellow attackers, something the recently departed Kane was lauded for.

Balogun was the subject of praise from current boss Mikel Arteta, who stated: "He’s a boy that has a really clear idea of what he wants to do with his career. He’s really ambitious, really committed and really brave, When you look at the numbers and what he is doing, it’s just incredible. It’s very rare to see that. But he’s got something special."

Despite the move seeming unlikely due to the rivalry between the club, Balogun has the potential to be a real star should he make the switch to the White side of North London.

Streak, Law call for 'more than two reviews' per innings

Debate heats up after both West Indies and Zimbabwe were denied crucial wickets because of lack of reviews in Bulawayo Test

Liam Brickhill in Bulawayo02-Nov-2017The Decision Review System came in for some criticism from both camps after the second Test in Bulawayo. This wasn’t the first time that the DRS has been used in Zimbabwe – it was first used during the second Test against Sri Lanka last year – but neither team seemed to get the best out of the system.Zimbabwe may have removed eventual centurion Jason Holder for 11, if they still had a review available, while West Indies’ push for victory on the final day was stalled when Graeme Cremer was given not out after gloving a sharp bouncer to wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich off the first ball he faced. Without any reviews to fall back on, West Indies could not reverse the decision. That wasn’t it, however. Late in the afternoon they had two lbw decisions turned down despite the ball tracker returning three reds. “I probably can’t comment on that because I’ll get into big trouble,” said Stuart Law, the West Indies coach when asked about the DRS. “It costs a lot of money to set up the cameras and have the technology available to us. To only be able to use it for two incorrect appeals, I think, is ludicrous considering that you had $400,000 worth of machinery around and you can’t use it. To me that doesn’t quite make sense. But we’ve got to be smarter and understand that we do only have two reviews.”From my understanding, the technology has been incorporated to stop the absolute howler. Umpires are human and they make mistakes, we all do. But it’s there to stop the howler and if there are decisions where you feel you’ve been hard done by and you’re not able to use it, I think it’s something that must be looked at.”Heath Streak, the Zimbabwe coach, also resonated Law’s thoughts. “You pay a lot of money to have those systems in place,” he said. “I think that people watching on the telly could see that incorrect decisions were made. So I think it’s something that will have to be discussed going forward as to how we can best utilise what is effectively a very expensive system to have more correct decisions out there, so that the result is a reflection of the game and what’s really happened, rather than one or two guys getting away with a decision because the other team has lost reviews.”Graeme Cremer, the Zimbabwe captain, admitted that both teams used the system poorly. Zimbabwe had used their last review on the third day attempting to reverse a decision against Kieran Powell. Sikandar Raza subsequently couldn’t review an lbw appeal off Holder, which cost them plenty.”The Test match could have been a lot different if Holder had got out [with that review],” Cremer said. “We could have knocked off the tail a lot quicker, and got a long way ahead in the game. Then we definitely would have bowled again and it would have been an exciting finish to the Test match. It’s one of those things. It can happen.”Like Law, Streak also questioned the limitation of two incorrect reviews per team per innings. “If you’re going to spend that much money I think four or five reviews should be necessary to get the correct decisions. I don’t see any reason why they should limit it to only two.”Law also questioned the consistency of the results being provided by the technology in use, such as Snicko, which is used to graphically analyse sounds made by, for example, an edged shot.”I’ve found it a little inconsistent these two Tests,” Law said. “On the Snicko there have been a lot of waves or spikes, some days there were plenty, some days there were none when someone is smashing the inside edge onto their pad. It doesn’t provide an exact result, but it gives you an idea I suppose. We’ve just got to use it better.”
