ICC to support Kusal's damages claim off WADA – SLC chief

The ICC has agreed to support Sri Lanka Cricket and Kusal Perera’s claim for costs and damages from the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), SLC president Thilanga Sumathipala has said.Perera had been suspended after a Qatar-based lab found a banned substance in his urine sample, but the doping charges were dropped in May when an independent analyst found that the WADA-accredited lab’s findings were not sustainable.Though the ICC had previously said it “does not accept that it is responsible” for the consequences the lab’s findings, SLC believes it has got the ICC’s support in its attempt to obtain both costs and compensation from WADA itself.Sumathipala said the board’s request for compensation for Perera received widespread support at the recent ICC meeting in Edinburgh.”We appealed to the ICC about the injustice that had happened to Kusal, and we were given an audience at the CEOs’ meeting. I must say the committee comprising of the CEOs unanimously supported our claim,” he said. “Then it came to the board meeting, and at the board meeting we made the appeal that there should be compensation – not just the cost. It was decided that the costs and the compensation should be paid to him, because the ICC took the position that the claim made by Kusal is fair and justifiable. ICC decided to stand by Sri Lanka Cricket and support the claim.”SLC said it spent about 13 million Sri Lankan rupees (US $92,000 approx) on fighting the case. The player himself is expected to pay this figure back to the board, according to Perera’s management. The board, however, has been adamant that those responsible for the imposition of the five-month suspension on Perera should ultimately bear the costs. Sumathipala suggested that no less than 35 million rupees (US $246,000) was appropriate, given Perera’s loss of earnings during the suspension, and the “damage to his reputation”.”This kind of compensation has never ever been paid to anybody in the history of cricket,” Sumathipala said. “The ICC and SLC are together in this – the money is ultimately coming from WADA, through the ICC, to Kusal. It is a new experience for WADA as well.”Sumathipala said the board was optimistic WADA would provide compensation, as it has already accepted there was a flaw in its processes. “I don’t think we will have to go to court over it,” he said. According to Sumathipala, the ICC and WADA have also blacklisted the Qatar-based lab.Discussions with WADA are believed to be in their very early stages, though, and Perera himself is yet to be brought up to speed on the situation. SLC officials are expected to meet with Perera and his management after the player returns from the England tour on Thursday.Perera missed a full tour of New Zealand, bilateral T20s against India, the Asia Cup and the World T20 as a result of the suspension. He was also ineligible for this year’s IPL auction, as well as the initial Test squad for England as he had only recently returned to training.

Celtic To Ward Off Significant Interest in 57 y/o Key Figure

Celtic have 'no interest' in letting manager Ange Postecoglou depart the club despite interest from south of the border due to his impressive work in Scotland, according to journalist Dean Jones.

What's the latest news involving Ange Postecoglou?

Renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano recently confirmed that Postecoglou was on a four-man shortlist to replace Antonio Conte at Tottenham Hotspur, stating on Twitter: "Negotiations between Nagelsmann and Tottenham have not resumed, at this stage. No changes: he'd only consider the job with supportive sporting director. Arne Slot, concrete option discussed internally; while Luis Enrique, Amorim and Postecoglou remain on Levy list."

Football Insider have also claimed that Postecoglou is 'wanted' by Spurs and Leeds United and that Celtic 'fear' that the 57-year-old may join an 'elite' Premier League club this summer.

He is on a 12-month rolling contract at Parkhead, meaning every day his deal stands at having a year to run, a model that Celtic have operated with over the years with numerous different bosses.

Nevertheless, Postecoglou did make some telling comments on his future earlier this year, as per The Sun, following his side's 2-1 victory over Rangers to secure the Viaplay Cup trophy, stating: “When people say, ‘He’s going to go down the road or somewhere else with the first offer he gets’, it’s not how I’m wired, it’s not how I think. For me, what it’s about is just trying to leave a mark wherever I am. I have done that with every football club I have been at. I want to do that at this club too and that is all that consumes me. I don’t think about the next step or I need to go somewhere else, or I need to do this or I need to consider other things."

Speaking to Football FanCast, journalist Jones thinks that it is inevitable that Postecoglou will attract Premier League interest due to the job he has done at Celtic.

Jones told FFC: "Obviously, Celtic have got no interest in hearing about any of these rumours. They love what he's been able to build, It'd be a massive loss and they don't want to entertain any of this and rightly so. They're in a good moment, but it's inevitable that any manager that does well at Celtic or Rangers starts to get linked to jobs in the Premier League and there is genuine interest along the way, so it's part and parcel of the football food chain, unfortunately."

What has Ange Postecoglou achieved at Celtic?

Postecoglou has won four trophies from a possible five at Celtic, including back-to-back Scottish Premiership titles and is one game away from making it five from six at the Scottish giants if his side can defeat Inverness Caledonian Thistle in the Scottish Cup final in early June, which would also net the Hoops a record-breaking eighth domestic treble in their history.

Inheriting a side that finished 25 points behind Rangers in 2020/21, the former Australia national team coach has managed to enact a rapid-fire turnaround at Parkhead.

Celtic attacker Kyogo Furuhashi.

Recruitment has been a real area of strength for Postecoglou, having brought in players such as Kyogo Furuhashi, Cameron Carter-Vickers and Jota under his guise, who have all gone on to be major players in his reign in the east end of Glasgow.

As per Marca via The Daily Mail, Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti praised Postecoglou for the way he has structured his side tactically ahead of the Spanish giants' bout against Celtic in the Champions League last year, saying: "They play very intense. They have had a great start to the season; there will be a great atmosphere in their stadium. We've got the most difficult game of this first half of the season. We're going to be up against a team playing great football and we have to be ready."

Receiving adulation from one of the great managers in football like Ancelotti shows the mark of the man Postecoglou is, though it is also an indication of the way his reputation is heralded beyond the Scottish football landscape.

Aston Villa Keeping Tabs On "Flamboyant" £169k-p/w Forward

Aston Villa are keeping tabs on Barcelona forward Ferran Torres ahead of a potential move to the Premier League, according to reports.

What's the latest on Torres?

The Spaniard first arrived at Camp Nou back in January 2022 and has since gone on to make 67 appearances under Xavi, but despite his contract not expiring for another four years, financial problems mean that the La Liga outfit could be forced to cash in on him this summer.

The Blaugrana winger will already be used to the style of play in the top-flight having spent almost two years at Manchester City so he knows the division well, and there’s a chance that he could be set to stage his return during the upcoming window having attracted the attention of Unai Emery.

Speaking on The Talking Transfers Podcast, Graeme Bailey, journalist and transfer expert, confirmed that the 23-year-old was a name he’s “already hearing” doing the rounds in the Midlands, and it would appear that the rumoured interest is true by the following update.

According to Football Insider, Aston Villa are “monitoring” Torres ahead of a possible move back to the Premier League. Barcelona’s forward being potentially put on the market has “alerted” NSWE who are “eager” to back the boss with a “number of ambitious signings” in the months ahead. Emery is a “big admirer” of the £169k-per-week ace’s ability and believes that the chance to snap him up should the opportunity arise is “too good to turn down”.

NSWE’s likely appointment of Barcelona’s director of football Mateu Alemany could further boost the chances of a deal being completed with him being the individual to sign the player for the Spanish giants.

Barcelona forward Ferran Torres.

Should Aston Villa submit an offer for Torres?

Torres is an extremely exciting player with bags of potential and being just 23 years of age is still very much in his prime, so with the experience that he already has in England, Aston Villa should definitely consider tabling a bid to secure his services.

The World Cup and Europa League participant posted 20 goal contributions (16 goals and four assists) in 43 Man City appearances so has proven that he’s capable of performing at the level required.

As lauded by talent scout Jacek Kulig, the “flamboyant” attacker also has the silverware to match his performances having helped the Sky Blues get their hands on the Premier League and English League Cup trophies during his short spell at the Etihad.

Finally, Torres would add some wonderful versatility to the manager’s squad with his ability to operate in attacking midfield, out wide on both the left and right flanks alongside at centre-forward, so this deal really is a no-brainer to complete should the chance present itself.

Liverpool Interested In "Class" £15k-p/w Alisson Alternative

Liverpool are interested in a deal to bring Hannover 96 goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler to Anfield, according to reports.

What's the latest on Zieler to Liverpool?

The Reds currently have Caoimhin Kelleher as their number two between the sticks and back-up to Alisson Becker, but with the Irishman desperate to receive regular time, reports have claimed that the board have given the green-light for him to secure a permanent move elsewhere, so should he depart, the 34-year-old has been identified as a possible replacement by Jurgen Klopp.

The German, who has made a total of 311 appearances for the Bundesliga outfit since originally joining back in 2010, will be out of contract at the end of next season so the upcoming window will present Stefan Leitl's side with their final opportunity to cash in should they not want to extend his stay further, and it wouldn't be his first time playing in the Premier League having previously had spells at both Manchester United and Leicester City.

According to BILD (via Sport Witness), Zieler is "high up" on Liverpool's list of goalkeeping "candidates" as a result of his strong relationship with Jorg Schmadtke. Hannover's former sporting director is closing in on a move to Merseyside and is set to become an "external consultant in transfer matters", and he already knows the shot-stopper well having signed him 13 years ago during his time at the Heinz von Heiden-Arena.

The 6 foot 2 colossus would be "keen" on the move as it would be a "financially attractive" prospect, and it's stated that his club are "unlikely to oppose" a deal should they receive a suitable offer.

Hannover 96 goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler.

Would Zieler be a good addition at Liverpool?

Liverpool, and especially Klopp, will know that Alisson will remain the club’s number one for the foreseeable future, but having been lauded “class” by Germany’s former international manager Joachim Low, Zieler would provide an excellent alternative at Anfield.

The 2014 World Cup winner, who currently pockets £15k-per-week, has kept 75 clean sheets in 311 Hannover appearances, including eight in 31 outings across all competitions this season, form which has seen him receive three man-of-the-match awards this term.

The Cologne native has also recorded 124 saves from 164 shots on target against since the start of the term, giving him a 74.4% success rate, and being the captain of his side, would add wonderful leadership qualities to the squad and be able to command the team from between the sticks.

Everton Can Dismantle Wolves Through "Magnificent" £20m Gem

Victory in Everton's forthcoming Premier League fixture against Wolverhampton Wanderers could be enough to preserve their top-flight status for another year.

The Toffees have been embroiled in woes this term and indeed continue to teeter on the edge of top-flight safety at the closing stages of the campaign, one point and one place ahead of 18th-placed Leeds United after 36 games.

Sean Dyche and co will no doubt be emboldened by the remarkable win on the south coast several weeks ago, dispatching Europe-chasing Brighton & Hove Albion 5-1, and while the match at the Amex preceded a 3-0 defeat to Manchester City at Goodison Park, a win over the Old Gold is very much within Everton's grasp.

While Alex Iwobi has been impressive with his creative flair of late, registering nine assists this season and being lauded as his team's "inspiration" by Henry Winter, thriving winger Dwight McNeil must be given licence to roam down the offensive left flank to ensure the Merseyside outfit have the best chance possible.

How effective could Dwight McNeil be vs Wolves?

Signed from relegated Burnley for £20m last summer, McNeil endured a meek opening to his life on Merseyside after chalking up 147 appearances with the Clarets.

The 23-year-old has recently grown into his skin under Dyche's wing, having now played 155 matches with the 51-year-old at the helm for Everton and Burnley.

Indeed, the £25k-per-week phenom has scored seven goals and provided three assists from 26 starting displays in the Premier League this term, having failed to score more than three times in a single league season at Turf Moor – and blanking as his previous club sank into the second tier last year.

It's worth noting that five of his seven league goals of the campaign have come in the latter half of the term and after the appointment of Dyche, which only further illustrates the growing influence that the gaffer is having on his burgeoning flanker.

dwight-mcneil-everton-fulham-premier-league-sean-dyche

His defensive aptitude is not to be sniffed at either, with FBref ranking him among the top 8% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for tackles, the top 7% for interceptions, the top 1% for blocks and the top 2% for clearances per 90, which could prove to be invaluable in the phases of the forthcoming match where the home side's advances must be rebuffed.

He recorded an incredible match rating of 9.9 from Sofascore after scoring twice and supplying a further assist, as well as winning nine of his 13 ground duels and making three key passes. Hailed as "magnificent" by scout Ryan Williams after his recent masterclass against Albion, McNeil could wreak havoc against Wolves right-back Nelson Semedo, who has not been in the best of form of late.

Indeed, the 29-year-old Portuguese has failed to register a match rating of at least 7.0 across any of his past six encounters, was shambolic during the 6-0 defeat to Brighton several weeks ago as recorded a lowly 6.0 rating and won just four of his eight ground duels, with the Express & Star handing him a 3/10 rating and haranguing his 'very poor' performance.

With McNeil in such fine fettle, misery could be exacerbated at Molineux on Saturday afternoon, with the wily winger surely crucial to securing a victory that could cement Everton's roots in the Premier League for another year.

Mathews frustrated with depleted bowling stocks

On the eve of a series which Angelo Mathews embarks upon without his two best seam bowlers of the past 18 months, Sri Lanka’s captain has called on the coaching system to raise its game

On the eve of a series which Angelo Mathews embarks upon without his two best seam bowlers of the past 18 months, Sri Lanka’s captain has called on the coaching system to raise its game.Sri Lanka’s quicks have been among the most injury-prone in the world over the past few years, with several spending up to 12 months in triage, and others regularly missing entire series with recurrent complaints. While many of these injuries have been difficult to avoid thanks to a busy schedule, Mathews said, there remained room for improvement in player production. In addition to the absence of Dhammika Prasad and Dushmantha Chameera, Sri Lanka are also without Shaminda Eranga, who was recently suspended for an illegal action. The selectors have had no choice but to pull two seam bowlers out of the ongoing A team tour of England, to replace the absent frontliners in the national squad. With Suranga Lakmal also in doubt for the first Test due to a hamstring complaint, either Asitha Fernando or Vishwa Fernando may make their Test debut.”The coaches in the back end have to do a lot of work to produce players, and also try to get them fit,” Mathews said. “We need more players coming through the ranks, so the coaches have a bigger job to play for the next one-and-a-half years. If the fast bowlers are injured, we need fast bowlers. At the international level, I can’t go as a captain and say we don’t have bowlers. If we don’t have them, we need to know how to produce them.”Prasad will now miss his third full Test series in a row, after having also withdrawn from the New Zealand and England tours before the first Test. Chameera left the England tour after the first Test, and legspinner Jeffrey Vandersay, who was being prepared for Test entry in this series, has also now been ruled out thanks to a finger injury.”It has been a very frustrating few months,” Mathews said. “Not only one bowler, we’ve lost so many. Vandersay is one of our key bowlers in the spin department. It’s very frustrating to see them going down. The workload has been very high when they play all three formats. When they play continuously, the body eventually gets tired. It’s very hard to divide those players when it comes to Tests, one-dayers and Twenty20s. We haven’t got a wide range of choices to make and pick from. The bowlers who are fit – they’ve got no choice but to play all three formats.”Actually, as back-up staff, we need to try and look for more new players and get them ready and fit. We can’t always keep saying, ‘the bowlers are injured, we haven’t got that many bowlers’. We need to try and find them if we don’t have them.”Of the bowlers that do remain however, spinners Rangana Herath and Dilruwan Perera are expected to feature through the series. Herath recently surpassed 300 Test scalps, and Perera has largely proved himself an able second spinner in Asian conditions.”I think the spinners will have a lot of workload on this pitch,” Mathews said. “If it’s spinning or seaming, we’ve got a couple of key bowlers in Rangana Herath or Dilruwan if it spins. They’ve got enough experience. We have set up a few plans and hopefully we can execute them.”Sri Lanka’s batting appears more settled than the attack, with Mathews confirming that Kusal Mendis and Dinesh Chandimal will bat at nos. 3 and 4, as they had through much of the tour of England. Openers Dimuth Karunaratne and Kaushal Silva have also now played more than 25 Tests each, and are currently unchallenged at the top of the order.”I’m actually happy with the current opening pair,” he said. “Especially in England – in tough conditions – I thought they put up some good efforts. All the batsmen lacked getting those big hundreds. If we can be more consistent and convert those 30s, 40s and 50s into 100s and 150s, that would be ideal. Our opening combination is going to be the key part in our batting unit. If they can get the shine off the ball and try and send the bowlers into their second and third spells, that would be ideal.”

Spurs: Mason Must Unleash £55k-p/w "Monster" Vs Bees

There were few positives for Tottenham Hotspur to take from last weekend's 2-1 defeat at the hands of Aston Villa but the performance of the returning Yves Bissouma was one of them.

Harry Kane's late penalty wasn't enough for Spurs to salvage anything in the Midlands in a result which puts Unai Emery's side level on points with the Lilywhites in eighth position in the Premier League.

If Spurs want to avoid the Europa Conference League next season and ensure that they're playing in the more prestigious Europa League, then they will likely need positive results against Brentford and Leeds United in their final two games of the campaign.

Ryan Mason will be keen to finish his interim spell with a flourish, so he must surely consider handing the returning Bissouma a start against the Bees at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this afternoon.

Should Bissouma start vs Brentford?

It has been a frustrating first season in Tottenham colours for the 26-year-old, having joined the club from Brighton in a deal worth £25m last summer.

The Mali international, who was described as an "absolute monster" by journalist Aaron Stokes in 2021, has struggled with injury problems throughout the campaign, which has limited him to just eight starts and 13 substitute appearances in the Premier League so far this term.

After three months on the sidelines, he made his return in the 2-1 defeat against Villa last time out and was described as the "only real positive" by the Athletic's Charlie Eccleshare, which suggests that he is pushing for a start today.

Mason also spoke in his pre-match conference about Bissouma's fitness and hinted that he could feature heavily in the final two games of the campaign.

"Obviously he's had a few injuries this season that have probably halted his progress, but there are two games now and I can feel the excitement from him that he's back out on the training pitch and he's out there playing and he feels like he can help the team and hopefully he can do that," he said.

Tottenham's Ryan Mason

While Spurs fans might be disappointed to have seen so little from Bissouma this season, his performances last season with the Seagulls saw him earn a strong 6.99 average rating from WhoScored, which would be enough to rank him as the fourth-best player in Spurs' squad this term.

The same website also suggests that he excels at ball interceptions, passing, tackling and concentration, all of which make him stand out as a great defensive-minded option, which could help to improve Spurs' woeful defensive record in the final two games.

Bissouma will surely be an exciting option for next season when Spurs will hopefully have the right manager that can take the club in a positive direction.

In the meantime, though, Spurs must focus on playing to their highest level against Brentford today and after his impressive cameo against Villa, it is surely time that Bissouma was handed a rare Premier League start in a bid to dominate the Bees.

De Silva and Chandimal lead Sri Lanka fightback

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsDhananjaya de Silva and Dinesh Chandimal rescued Sri Lanka on a gripping first day in Colombo•AFP

Sri Lanka: 214 for 5. Hardly an inspiring score at stumps on the first day of a Test. Runs ground out, just a few wickets here and there, Australia probably on top. Nope. This was not the kind of day that can be judged from the closing score. It was a day on which Sri Lanka’s top order capitulated to be 26 for 5. A day on which Dhananjaya de Silva, in his third Test, led the recovery with a brilliant maiden century. And a day that ended with Sri Lanka in command. The runs came slowly, but at least they came. They came with patience, class, respect for good bowling and, yes, a little bit of luck. But the way de Silva and Dinesh Chandimal rebuilt this innings was, for fans of Test cricket, a thing of beauty. Australia’s batsmen could learn something from their approach. By stumps, de Silva was on 116 from 240 balls, Chandimal on 64 from 204, and their partnership was worth 188. They had undone all Australia’s morning work. The dry pitch turned from the first hour. Nathan Lyon picked up two wickets early, then like Jon Holland, bowled well without fortune as the day wore on. Sri Lanka’s three-man spin attack will pose Australia significant challenges. There was little swing, not as much reverse as in the previous two Tests. Australia picked four pace bowlers but used only three. All of the pace wickets came from Mitchell Starc, comfortably Australia’s best player of the series. If Australia’s batsmen have looked bewildered on this tour, the selectors appeared similarly baffled in Colombo. How else to account for shortening their batting order when runs have been their biggest problem? Joe Burns and Usman Khawaja were dropped, Shaun Marsh and Moises Henriques came in. Henriques, with a first-class batting average of 31, an average of 15 in the last Sheffield Shield season, and no first-class cricket since November, was listed at No.5. He did not bowl. The selectors believe Henriques bats well against spin. It is true that he scored 68 and 81 not out against India on Test debut in Chennai in 2013. But he failed to reach double figures in the rest of that tour, a series that also featured clouded selection policies. It remains to be seen how Henriques will handle Rangana Herath, Dilruwan Perera and Lakshan Sandakan, but his selection was a clear message to the incumbents: learn how to play spin, or you won’t play in Asia.Sri Lanka’s batting has also faltered often in this series, but always there has been someone to rescue them. In Pallekele it was Kusal Mendis with a remarkable maiden Test century in the second innings. In Galle it was Mendis again, with 86 after the score wobbled to 9 for 2 on the first morning. This time it was de Silva, who entered this series uncapped, and by stumps on day one in Colombo sat second only to Mendis on the series run tally. The precarious situation when de Silva walked to the crease cannot be forgotten: 26 for 5. Yes, the series was already won, but suddenly there appeared the very real prospect of Sri Lanka finishing with a humiliation: overhauling their lowest ever Test total, the 71 they scored against Pakistan in Kandy in 1994, seemed a distant goal. And indeed, when de Silva was given out caught at bat pad off Lyon for 5, disaster seemed likely. But de Silva knew he had not hit the ball – hadn’t even got close to it, really. He reviewed the decision of umpire S Ravi and was rightly reprieved and from then on – this was the 20th over of the morning – not a single wicket fell for the rest of the day. There were some nervy moments – Mitchell Marsh spilled a tough chance at gully when Chandimal was 11, two Australian reviews were struck down, de Silva was dropped by Shaun Marsh at cover on 104 – but the batsmen survived.De Silva attacked when given the chance and struck three fours in one over from Starc. He was strong when pulling and flicking off his pads, though his boundaries came all around the ground, including plenty through cover. His fifty came with a lofted boundary over cover off Mitchell Marsh, his hundred with another boundary cut off the legspin of Steven Smith. It took de Silva 209 deliveries to reach his century. It was a proper Test innings.Chandimal was even more circumspect, nudging singles and rotating the strike, playing the perfect foil to de Silva. His fifty came from 165 deliveries, and by stumps he had struck only four fours. Even more than de Silva he showed Australia’s batsmen how a challenging pitch can be handled: with the utmost patience. Chandimal himself had walked out at 24 for 4, a frenetic first hour bringing plenty of wickets.Sri Lanka’s openers continued their disastrous series, Kaushal Silva flashing at Starc and edging to slip for a 15-ball duck, and Dimuth Karunaratne bowled trying to drive Starc for 7 from 34 deliveries. Neither man has reached double figures even once in this campaign from five innings, Sri Lanka’s series triumph having come in spite of their insipid top order. What might they have achieved if the openers had found form too?Lyon was called on in the sixth over of the Test and immediately found some turn. In the 12th over he struck with a delivery that was fullish, quick and spun appreciably, and Kusal Perera managed only an edge to Smith at slip. Lyon claimed another wicket when Angelo Mathews top-edged a sweep and was caught at fine leg for 1.Then Mendis flashed hard at a Starc delivery that angled across him and Smith snapped up his third catch at slip for the morning. Mendis had been the key batsman in the first two Tests, and Australia thought his wicket was the big one. As it turned out, at least two big ones were still waiting to be taken at stumps.
