Man United Hold Talks To Sign "Special Player"

Manchester United have held "very positive" talks to sign Bayer Leverkusen full-back Jeremie Frimpong this summer.

What’s the latest on Frimpong and Man United?

The Red Devils were heavily linked with a move for Frimpong last year, with Sky Sports Germany claiming that a move had at one stage been “becoming more and more apparent”. However, as we know, a transfer failed to materialise, although speculation has returned in recent months.

Football Insider stated back in February that United and Erik ten Hag are plotting a move to bring the Netherlands international to the Premier League, with Old Trafford scouts raving about the player. It seems as if a first move has now been made ahead of the summer, with Frimpong impressing in the Bundesliga, contributing to 13 goals in 26 league games.

Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg provided an update in the last 48 hours regarding the Red Devils and Frimpong. He revealed that talks have been held between those at Old Trafford and the player’s agent, agent Jeffrey Lemmert, with those discussions thought to be “very positive”.

Plettenberg then added in his Twitter post that “Ten Hag admires the player” and how Frimpong is “open” to leaving Leverkusen over the coming months.

Should Man United sign Frimpong?

Frimpong, Hailed as a “special player” by his manager Xabi Alonso, has enjoyed his best-ever season when it comes to goal contributions and appears to be going from strength to strength. His Transfermarkt valuation has rocketed from €10m to €35m during his time with Leverkusen, where he has been the club’s second-best performer this season behind Florian Wirtz, as per WhoScored.

The 22-year-old has outperformed both United right-backs Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka and has been Leverkusen’s most fouled player and most successful dribbler. Frimpong has also registered more assists than any Leverkusen player and is equal with Bruno Fernandes in that regard, so a move by United could be an extremely shrewd one.

The Red Devils recently secured Luke Shaw to a new long-term contract so appear to have their left-back option nailed down in the long run, but there still seems to be a question at right-back. United appear to be open to offers for Wan-Bissaka over the coming months, so should he depart, Frimpong could be brought in as his replacement and look to rival Dalot for a starting spot in Ten Hag’s second season, making this one to keep an eye on.

Predicted Arsenal XI, team & injury news vs West Ham

Arsenal can extend their lead at the top of the Premier League standings with a win at West Ham United this afternoon.

The Gunners threw away a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with Liverpool last time out, though it's been over a decade since they last picked up three points at Anfield, so it was probably a point gained in the grand scheme of things.

Mikel Arteta's side are being hunted down by defending champions Manchester City, who remain three points behind and will have a game in hand after this weekend's fixtures.

There are no new injury concerns for the Spaniard, though it's unlikely that he has William Saliba back, whilst Eddie Nketiah could be involved – at least off the bench – having recovered from an ankle issue that has kept him out for six weeks.

With that in mind, here's how Arsenal could look at the London Stadium…

How will Arsenal line up against West Ham?

Aaron Ramsdale, who has arguably been one of the goalkeepers of the season, will continue his no.1 duties, whilst the back four behind him is likely to remain much the same, though not without consideration.

Kieran Tierney could be vying for a start at left-back, whilst Rob Holding was hardly convincing against the Reds, though neither has mid-season signing Jakub Kiwior. It should see the Englishman continue to partner Gabriel Magalhaes, with Oleksandr Zinchenko – at fault for one of Liverpool's comeback strikes – also retaining his place, with Ben White at right-back.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta reacts vs Liverpool

In midfield, the usual trio of Martin Odegaard, Thomas Partey and Granit Xhaka should also continue but it would not be a surprise to see Jorginho come in for either of the latter two, given just how big a part they'll need to play during the run-in.

On the flanks, there is a case for Leandro Trossard to return to the starting XI but it's hard to ignore the form of both Gabriel Martinelli – who bagged a goal and assist on Merseyside – and Bukayo Saka, so the £23m-rated Belgian "wizard" – as lauded by reporter Charlie Haffenden – misses out once again.

It leaves Gabriel Jesus to spearhead the attack, with Nketiah returning to the bench, where he'll sit alongside the likes of Emile Smith Rowe, Fabio Vieira and Reiss Nelson.

Predicted Arsenal XI (4-3-3): Ramsdale; Zinchenko, Gabriel, Holding, White; Xhaka, Partey, Odegaard; Martinelli, Saka, Jesus

£65k p/w Spurs Ace Booed Before Coming On At Weekend

Tottenham Hotspur fans were even heard booing the arrival of Davinson Sanchez as the replacement for the injured Clement Lenglet on Saturday.

What did Sanchez do on Saturday?

Despite initially taking the lead through Son Heung-min, Saturday proved yet another disappointing afternoon of football for the watching Spurs fans.

It looked as if they had snatched a point from the game late on with Arnaut Danjuma levelling the proceedings with just minutes remaining.

However, it was the Cherries which left north London with maximum points as they scored a last-gasp winner through Dango Ouattara.

Despite the result, perhaps the biggest talking point to come from the game was the boos heard from the home end towards their own player, Sanchez.

It was a poor outing for the Colombian who was substituted after just 23 minutes of action after coming on as a substitute in the first half (via SofaScore).

And speaking on the Gold & Guest Talk Tottenham podcast, journalist Alasdair Gold has claimed he was informed that actually, the booing had even started before the £65k-per-week ace had taken a touch of the ball:

(21:00) "So apparently I didn't hear this but apparently there were suggestions that was some boos when he came on, as well, Sanchez for Lenglet.

"It's a difficult one because I don't really know, the only other sub that we thought maybe we could have taken place was [Japhet] Tanganga.

"But let's be honest, I wouldn't say Japhet Tanganga is probably the most popular player among the Spurs fan base in the world right now either rightly or wrongly."

Do Spurs need to sell Sanchez?

After the events which took place on Saturday, it is hard to imagine Sanchez remaining a Tottenham player beyond the summer as he was left visibly upset after being taken off.

The Colombian does only have one-year remaining on his deal and Gold has recently suggested the defender has actually been open to leaving Spurs for a while now.

It is apparent a lot of the Spurs fans also feel as if it is time for the 26-year-old to leave in the summer with many clearly not pleased with the options Spurs have off the bench.

Spurs defenderDavinson Sanchez

And perhaps the frustration came from the manager's unwillingness to change formation and adopt a back four instead of insisting with a back three.

There is certainly an argument that this may have proven a risk on the weekend given the club have not played with a back four since Antonio Conte took over.

However, this is perhaps one of the issues that has hindered Spurs over recent years in being unable to change formation depending on the scenario they find themselves in.

Of course, Ivan Perisic may not be trusted as the left-back with the veteran having never played in that position over his career.

But there is a real feeling that this Spurs outfit are unable to adapt to the situations they find themselves in, especially as they struggle with injuries currently.

Youngster Pape Matar Sarr excelled in his opportunity at the San Siro in February, yet since that game, he has barely been handed an opportunity in the Spurs side.

Although it was not a pleasant scene to witness in north London on the weekend, perhaps the boos were aimed as much towards the manager as they were the player.

Southampton Set For "Silver Lining" On £8k-p/w "Threat"

Southampton defender Tino Livramento staging his return from injury will be a “silver lining” for Ruben Selles, according to journalist Dean Jones.

What's the latest injury news on Livramento?

Livramento first arrived on the south coast back in August 2021 when he joined from Premier League rivals Chelsea, but he’s made just 32 appearances during that time as a result of being on the sidelines through injury.

In 2021/22, he missed 28 days of action with knee problems followed by his cruciate ligament rupture, which has kept him absent for almost a year to date, as per Transfermarkt. At the end of March, however, Selles confirmed during a press conference that the 20-year-old was making great progress and that he expects him to “join the team soon”.

The Athletic reports that the Blues negotiated a £38m buy-back clause as part of his Southampton deal, and it was claimed late last year that they were thinking about bringing him back, with journalist Pete O’Rourke stating that it’s a “never say never” situation, but his focus right now will surely be simply returning to the field and building up his match fitness and game time.

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Jones couldn’t speak highly enough of Livramento and insisted that Southampton would be receiving great news when it’s confirmed that he is ready to pull his Saints shirt back on and stake his claim for a place in the first team. He said:

"I think it's definitely a silver lining to have Livramento coming back into the side now; he's a player that they will have missed for sure. We all know the qualities that he's got and what he's capable of."

Southampton defender Tino Livramento.

Will Livramento's return be a positive for Southampton?

Livramento will certainly take a lot of time to gradually return to his old self after such a serious long-term injury, but having been dubbed a “threat” by pundit Noel Whelan, Southampton could be getting a massive boost when he does stage his comeback.

The Saints right-back was averaging 1.9 tackles and 1.7 interceptions per top-flight game prior to his absence, via WhoScored, scoring one goal and notching two assists in his debut season (Transfermarkt). The £8k-p/w talent appears extremely reliable on the ball, having completed 507 of his 587 short passes, giving him a success rate of 86.4%.

Finally, Livramento can easily adapt to different formations where outside of his natural position, and we think this versatility makes him a wonderful option for the boss to have available at his disposal.

Aston Villa Willing To Sign "Outstanding" £15.8m Attacker

Aston Villa are willing to trigger a release clause to sign Real Mallorca attacker Kang-in Lee this summer.

What’s the latest transfer news on Villa and Lee?

Unai Emery is set to be backed with a ‘huge’ summer budget ahead of his first full season in charge after making just two signings in the January window.

One player who was linked with a move to Villa Park earlier in the year was Lee, with reports suggesting that Villa offered an initial €13.5m for the 22-year-old’s services during the winter window. However, it looks as if the club could now go one step further to sign Lee, who can play as an attacking midfielder or winger.

One Spanish outlet provided an update on Lee’s situation in the last 48 hours, claiming that those from Villa Park are once again interested in his services.

The report states how Villa, and by extension owners NSWE and sporting director Johan Lange, are willing to pay the player’s €18m (£15.8m) release clause to bring him to England this summer. Lee is expected to leave the La Liga side this summer, with Mallorca preparing to ‘make a round deal’.

Unai Emery instructs his Aston Villa side as they face Nottingham Forest in the Premier League.

Should Villa sign Lee?

Lee is a versatile left-footed attacker who was labelled an “outstanding talent” by Valencia academy director Luis Vicente Mateo. The South Korea international now has plenty of experience in Spain, making 61 appearances for former employers Valencia and 65 for Mallorca. In total, Lee has contributed to 16 La Liga goals, and you’d like to think that there is room for improvement on his already impressive game at the age of 22.

As per WhoScored, Lee has been one of Mallorca’s top performers this season and has actually outperformed every Villa player aside from Ollie Watkins. The attacking midfielder has averaged more key passes and dribbles than any Mallorca or Villa attacker per 90 during the current campaign and has picked up more Player of the Match awards than any player from both sides.

Therefore, at €18m, a move to the Midlands could be a shrewd one, with Emery potentially taking Lee’s game to the next level over the coming years. Villa also don’t have an out-and-out attacking midfielder on the books at this moment in time, as per Transfermarkt, so Lee could be the creative spark needed at the club heading into the 2023/24 season, and by the looks of it, a transfer is one to follow closely over the coming months.

44 y/o Considers Big Tactical Decision At Chelsea

Journalist Simon Phillips has claimed that interim Chelsea manager Frank Lampard will revert to a back three in the club's next game.

What's the latest on Frank Lampard and Chelsea?

The 44-year-old has a big task on his hands right now as he looks to steady the ship with former head coach Graham Potter now fired.

Things under Lampard didn't get off to a good start as the Blues lost in the Premier League against Wolves, but he must put that disappointment behind him quickly.

Indeed, Chelsea now face a season-defining quarter-final clash with Real Madrid in the Champions League and travel to the Bernabeu on Wednesday for the first leg.

Naturally, the coach will have to think long and hard about his team selection. But it also seems as though Lampard is yet to decide what formation to play.

In a new article for GiveMeSport, Phillips revealed that the Englishman nearly played a back three against Wolves and may yet play it against Madrid.

He wrote: "Lampard changed the formation to his preferred 4-3-3, but I understand that him and his team had also heavily considered sticking with a back three and I'd be very surprised if they don't revert to that for the Real Madrid game on Wednesday night.

"After only having two training sessions, it was tough for Lampard to get his ideas across, and also he has yet to really assess his entire squad. Whilst he did work with some of them the first time around, there are also many new faces in a massively changed squad. Lampard has admitted that he hasn't had enough time to watch all of Chelsea's games this season, so he is very much giving them all a clean slate. This brings pros and cons, and some Chelsea fans have already been left frustrated by his first team selection back."

He added that the interim manager was "annoyed" during and after the Wolves game and won't be afraid to drop players once he's fully assessed the squad.

How will Chelsea line up against Real Madrid?

Against Wolves, Lampard did play a 4-3-3, as Phillips points out. But when in charge of Everton earlier this season, he was flexible enough to play a back five – or a back three depending on how you see it.

What's more, under Potter, Chelsea often abandoned the traditional back four. And so the current set of players should be well-equipped to go to either formation.

In potentially big news for the Blues, Thiago Silva returned to training Monday and so he is now in contention to play against Real Madrid, while N'Golo Kante and Mason Mount could also both feature.

No doubt this could have major impact on Lampard's plans. With Silva, for instance, he may feel as though his defence will have another quality without having to play that extra defender.

It will certainly be interesting to see how things play out.

Celtic Considering Swoop For £2.5k-p/w Left-Footed Striker

Celtic are keeping tabs on Swansea City striker Liam Cullen ahead of a potential move to the Scottish Premiership, according to reports.

What's the latest on Cullen's future?

The Hoops have striker Kyogo Furuhashi attracting significant interest from Premier League outfit Crystal Palace, who could potentially be set to make an offer for the Japanese superstar at the end of the season. Should he depart, Ange Postecoglou will need to find a suitable successor, and it seems the 24-year-old Cullen could be just the candidate he's looking for.

The Welshman is an academy graduate of Russell Martin's side, where since returning from a short loan spell at Lincoln City, he has become a regular feature of the senior first-team, making 68 appearances to date. The Championship forward, however, will be out of contract next summer, meaning that the upcoming window will be the final big opportunity for his boyhood club to cash in should he not agree to signing a new deal, and being his side's second best-performing offensive player, he won't be short of a potential suitor if he was to move on.

According to Football Insider, Celtic, alongside English second-tier sides Middlesbrough and Sunderland, are all "tracking" Cullen in a bid to secure his services ahead of the 2023/24 campaign. Swansea's £2.5k-per-week striker's performances have placed him firmly "on the radar" of the Hoops, Boro and the Black Cats, with all three admirers hoping to bolster their attacking ranks this summer.

Swansea City striker Liam Cullen.

Should Celtic make an offer for Cullen?

Celtic will know that Cullen's contract expiring next summer could mean that there is a cut-price deal available at the end of the season, and having been hailed as a forward who "drags defenders apart" with "underrated" movement by journalist Josh Bunting, the board should absolutely test the waters to see whether he wants to make the move north of the border.

The left-footed ace has clocked up 63 goal contributions (51 goals and 12 assists) in 165 appearances throughout his career so is prolific at taking his chances in the final third, and he also ranks in the 99th percentile for non-penalty expected goals plus assists, which highlights that even if he's not always on the scoresheet, he constantly looks like a threat in and around the opposition box.

Finally, Cullen is an extremely versatile operator having played in six various positions since bursting onto the professional scene, including anywhere across the frontline, out wide on both flanks included alongside his natural centre-forward role, so this should be a no-brainer of a decision for the hierarchy to make should the opportunity to sign him arise in the weeks and months ahead.

Declan Rice Goes Crazy After West Ham Beat Arsenal

A number of Arsenal fans online have reacted after spotting Declan Rice celebrating after a recent academy game at the Emirates Stadium.

What’s the latest on Declan Rice?

On Tuesday night, the FA Youth Cup final took place, with West Ham United captain U18s making the trip to north London to take on the Gunners.

Jack Wilshere’s men got off to a good start after scoring the opener early on, but Arsenal collapsed from there on in as the Irons scored five times without response to win the match 5-1.

While this will have been a big blow for the home side, their opponents were understandably jubilant at full-time – and the youngsters would have been delighted when senior club captain Rice showed his face in the winning team’s dressing room.

As captured in this footage online, the £60k-per-week England midfielder was seen dancing, singing and celebrating with the FA Youth Cup winners.

Of course, it’s no shock that he was happy for his team, but his sighting at the Emirates has sparked some interest online. After all, Rice has been strongly linked with a move to the Gunners in recent times.

What’s more, having gone on the record about wanting to play European football in the near future, Arsenal could be the perfect destination as they will almost certainly be playing in the Champions League next term.

With that being the case, some fans were keen to joke that Rice was actually celebrating with the wrong team.

Here are some of the best reactions…

Others now want him to be celebrating at the Emirates next season.

And one supporter didn’t seem too happy with his dance moves at all…
