Rangers: McLeish’s "Trojan" Would Thrive Under Beale

Alex McLeish should rightfully go down in the Glasgow Rangers annals as one of the club’s finest-ever managers, especially considering the constraints he had to work with.

The Scot delivered seven major honours, including a sensational treble during the 2002/03 campaign while having to reduce the wage bill season after season and relying heavily on free transfers and loan moves, with the vast majority of these being abject failures.

With all the criticism he received with some of his signings, there was one player who arrived on a free transfer who proved to be one of the finest players to grace the Ibrox pitch during that period – Dado Prso.

Michael Beale could potentially lose Alfredo Morelos this summer as his contract expires in a few months and in a hypothetical world, the manager would dream of forming a duo between Prso and Antonio Colak who would terrorise defences in the Premiership.

Is Dada Prso a Rangers legend?

The term legend gets thrown about all too often these days, but Prso was arguably one of the club's finest forwards this century.

He joined in the summer of 2004 on a free transfer following the expiration of his contract at AS Monaco, and he was well known on the continent, especially for scoring four goals against Deportivo La Coruna during a Champions League tie in November 2003.

Dado Prso for Rangers

He scored 20 times during his first term as the Gers won the league and League Cup, while adding another 12 in 2005/06, although no trophies were won during that campaign. He left the club in 2007 following a long-standing knee complaint but McLeish was full of praise for Prso when reminiscing, saying: “Dado was awesome, just awesome, and I’ve kept in touch with him over the years. He is just a wonderful human being.

“When we went up to Aberdeen and won during the Helicopter Sunday year, big Dado played in the Pittodrie wind and rain like an absolute trojan.”

How Beale could make use of his talents now, with Prso in his prime undoubtedly the ideal foil for Colak in this Rangers side. The former Gers striker wasn’t an out-and-out goalscorer, but he used his ability to read the game to get past defenders, making up for his lack of pace.

Prso could drag defenders all over the shop, creating plenty of space for his compatriot to nip in and have plenty of chances on goal and a duo of Prso and Colak, who has 17 goals this term, would surely be a hit amongst the fans.

McLeish had a few howlers during his spell in charge of the Glasgow side, but managing to lure Prso to the club definitely wasn’t one, and he would improve any Rangers team if he were still in his 'wonderful' prime years.

Update On Leeds Forward Injury Before Arsenal Clash

Injury expert Dr Rajpal Brar believes that Leeds United forward Wilfried Gnonto has a ‘common’ ankle injury which can range in regards to severity.

What’s the latest on Gnonto’s injury?

Gnonto added to Leeds’ injury woes during the international break after Tyler Adams suffered a hamstring issue prior to the Premier League win over Wolves and Max Wober hobbled off for Austria with a muscle issue.

The Italy international went over on his ankle against Malta in the first half on Sunday and needed to be replaced, with manager Roberto Mancini saying he is dealing with a ‘sprain’.

Bot Wober and Gnonto made a swift return to Yorkshire as a result for assessments on their respective issues, with the club hopeful they have avoided long-term absences. They seem to be doubts for this weekend’s trip to league leaders Arsenal, though, with Adams also undergoing hamstring surgery.

Brar was talking to MOT Leeds News specifically on Gnonto and his ankle problem. He said that based on the ‘info’ received so far, the forward may have an ‘inversion sprain’, which can range from day to day to over six weeks, although Gnonto’s doesn’t appear to be too serious.

“It sounds like this was the most common type of ankle injury which is inversion sprain where the ankle turns inwards. These can range from best case day to day to worse case being over six weeks out, but indications thus far are that this isn’t serious.

“He’s a doubt to face Arsenal this weekend but should be in contention following that, based on the info we have thus far.”

When could Gnonto be back?

It looks as if Javi Gracia will have to make a couple of changes from the starting XI that beat Wolves last time out due to Wober and Gnonto being doubts. Liam Cooper or Pascal Struijk could be in line to come in for Wober, whereas Luis Sinisterra or Crysencio Summerville may end up replacing Gnonto.

The games are coming thick and fast for the Whites now as we enter the run-in, with back-to-back home games against Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace following the meeting with Arsenal, fixtures that could be key as Leeds look to avoid the drop.

A clash with Forest is scheduled for Tuesday and Palace a week on Sunday, so Gnonto could well be looking to return for one of those games, providing things go well at Thorp Arch in the coming days.

West Ham come calling for Sarri

West Ham United are showing an interest in former Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri as a potential replacement for David Moyes, according to reports.

The Lowdown: Moyes under pressure…

Recent reports have suggested that the Irons boss has been under mounting pressure this season, following a string of poor Premier League results.

West Ham, after qualifying for back-to-back European campaigns, have failed to build upon their unexpected success of the previous two seasons – even despite a series of summer investments.

The east Londoners put pen to paper on deals for Alphonse Areola, Nayef Aguerd, Flynn Downes, Gianluca Scamacca, Maxwel Cornet, Thilo Kehrer, Emerson Palmieri and club record signing Lucas Paqueta last year.

Danny Ings also joined the club from Aston Villa in January, yet West Ham’s recent spending has been blighted by both injury issues on the field and general underperforming.

The likes of Rafael Benitez and Marcelo Bielsa have been mentioned as candidates to succeed Moyes in recent months but West Ham have yet to take affirmative action over their manager.

The Latest: West Ham interested in Sarri…

Moyes’ side could well go down at the end of the season if they’re not careful, but despite that, it is now believed they’re showing interest in a title-winning boss.

According to reports out of Italy, by newspaper Il Messagero, West Ham are one of three English clubs currently eyeing Sarri of Lazio – alongside Tottenham and Everton.

The 64-year-old’s relationship with sporting director Igli Tare is believed to be fragile as Sarri seeks reassurances on transfer strategy heading into the summer.

It’s added that Sarri has also just rejected a big-money offer from an unnamed club in the United Arab Emirates.

The Verdict: Surprise choice?

Much could depend on if West Ham are relegated from the top flight as it’s highly unlikely Sarri would be interested in that scenario.

However, if they do in fact remain in the big time, we believe the ex-Juventus coach could be a fairly solid candidate.

Sarri, despite being sacked by Chelsea, did manage to clinch a Europa League title with the Blues during his stint in 2019 and went on to win a Scudetto with Juventus.

The former Napoli boss deploys an attacking 4-3-3 formation, a far cry from Moyes’ more pragmatic style, with his ex-player Jorginho also calling Sarri a ‘magnificent coach’ and ‘extraordinary’ on a tactical level.

Of course, this is all hypothetical, and West Ham’s current priorities must be to remain in the Premier League.

Rangers Have An Ideal Barisic Heir in Teen Starlet

When Glasgow Rangers signed emerging Turkish left back Ridvan Yilmaz last summer, he was naturally looked upon as the ideal heir to Borna Barisic, who isn’t getting any younger.

Fast-forward eight months and the youngster has played just nine times for the Ibrox side after joining for £5m.

Big things were expected of the player but after missing 29 matches due to a hamstring injury, things haven't gone to plan. However, he is back to full fitness now and will be looking to make an impact.

There is no shortage of youngsters waiting in line to take over the left-back slot once Barisic moves on from the club, with the likes of Johnly Yfeko, Alex Kpakpe and Kevin Ciubotaru all playing for the B team and trying to stake a claim alongside Yilmaz.

It might well be none of these players however that best him, with Robbie Fraser, another B team starlet who also captains the team, shining in the Lowland League.

Indeed, he may well have the Turkish full-back looking over his shoulder.

Who is Robbie Fraser?

The 19-year-old will be aiming to secure a new deal at the club with his contract set to expire but judging by his recent form, that shouldn’t be a problem.

Upon signing his last contract in February 2022, Fraser said: “I feel like I’m getting closer to making that next step into the first team, hopefully. I felt that it was the right opportunity to push on.”

He has played 36 matches this season for the B team, scoring twice and registering six assists with his ability to provide an attacking threat comparable to Barisic.

The Croat so often rampages down the left-hand side in order to deliver crosses or passes into the box, while also being a dab hand at set pieces too having registered 55 goal involvements in Scotland.

Borna Barisic for Croatia

Indeed, Fraser enjoys the odd free kick too, having scored a “superb” effort – according to Jordan Campbell – during a match last year and this could be an added bonus for Michael Beale.

Fraser has made the Rangers matchday squad on three occasions this term, once each in the Premiership, Champions League and League Cup without emerging from the bench, however, this experience will stand him in good stead for the future.

Showing clear leadership skills having led the B side to second in the Lowland League table with a chance of winning the division, could he have a future in the first-team squad?

Only time will tell, but with a new era underway at Ibrox, he may well have a great chance.

West Ham Can Unleash Teen Star With A "Massive Future"

West Ham United are reportedly considering Stade de Reims boss Will Still as a potential heir to David Moyes at the London Stadium and the 30-year-old could take Divin Mubama to the very top.

Could West Ham hire Will Still?

According to French news outlet Foot Mercato, the Hammers appreciate Still as an option for next season and the managerial prodigy could easily be tempted by a switch to the London Stadium, as he has already admitted to being a West Ham fan.

West Ham currently sit 18th in the Premier League with relegation a real option, which suggests that Moyes cannot be considered the long-term option in the dugout if the Hammers are to progress as a club.

Still, meanwhile, is fresh off the back of a 19-game unbeaten run in Ligue 1, which was only ended when his side suffered a 2-1 home defeat by Marseille last weekend, having avoided defeat against PSG twice and impressively beaten AS Monaco in that run.

At just 30, Still is the youngest manager in Europe's top leagues and has earned a lot of plaudits for his success with Les rouges et blancs, with journalist Julien Laurens labelling him a "genius" when it comes to tactical decisions in a recent interview.

One of the key reasons behind Still's success at Reims has been the superb form of Arsenal loanee Folarin Balogun, who trails only Jonathan David and Kylian Mbappe for goals in France's top flight so far this campaign.

The 21-year-old's 17 goals in just 27 Ligue 1 appearances is a testament to Still's impressive coaching, as his only other loan spell produced an underwhelming three goals in the Championship with Middlesbrough.

Could Will Still unleash Mubama?

Balogun's form indicates that Still knows how to get the best out of young strikers and should he move to West Ham, he could produce similar results with academy star Divin Mubama.

Despite West Ham's woes in front of goal so far this campaign, which see them ranked as one of the lowest scorers in the division, Moyes is yet to trust Mubama in the Premier League.

Divin-Mubama-West-Ham-United

The 18-year-old, who has been tipped for a "massive future" at the London Stadium by journalist Josh Bunting, has plundered in 11 goals in 15 Premier League 2 appearances this season and scored his first senior goal in the 4-0 triumph against AEK Larnaca last week.

There seems to be little that will stop the teenage striker from being a hit in West Ham's senior side in the future, and with Gianluca Scamacca and Michail Antonio both struggling for form this term, with six league goals between them, Mubama might just get his chance under a progressive manager such as Still.

If he can replicate Balogun's form at Reims under the young Belgian, then he will surely fire the Hammers up the Premier League table next season.

Claims £55k-p/w Wolves Man Didn’t Deserve VAR Penalty

BBC pundit Chris Sutton has claimed that Adama Traore went over too easily when looking for a penalty for Wolves in their most recent match.

What's the latest on Wolves and VAR?

Julen Lopetugui's men travelled away from home to take on Nottingham Forest in the Premier League this weekend but had to settle for just a point after a fiercely-contested match.

Indeed, Steve Cooper and co took a first-half lead thanks to Brennan Johnson, but Wolves then managed to pull themselves level thanks to Daniel Podence.

That was enough to see the game end 1-1 but perhaps things would have been different had referee Chris Kavanagh pointed to the spot when Traore went to ground in the box.

When speaking about the challenge from Forest defender centre-back Felipe, Sutton told BBC radio show 606 that he agreed with the call made by the officials.

He explained (18:26): "I thought he went over easily there. I've seen that a lot, and what he does is he decelerates, and the Forest defender was Felipe I think, and there's contact, there's not enough contact. He's looking for a penalty. It's simulation.

Sutton added (18:58): "Why doesn’t Traore, with all his pace and his strength and his ability, not try and finish it anyway. He is looking for contact.

"And you know, the referee didn't didn't award a penalty, obviously, but he didn't go and check it on the monitor, it wasn't enough to overturn it. So, I'm totally with the referee on that."

Did Adama Traore deserve a penalty for Wolves?

As you can see in the Sky Sports highlights of the incident, there is a bit of a tug from Felipe on Traore, and you have seen those kinds of challenges punished before.

However, the £55k-p/w Wolves winger could probably stay on his feet and get the shot away if he really wanted to. In the end, it was a marginal decision and with referee Kavanagh not giving it live, it was never likely to be overturned by VAR.

No doubt, some Wolves fans will be frustrated by the decision but seeing as Podence seemed to spit at Johnson but still managed to avoid a red card, perhaps they can count themselves lucky on that front.

The draw leaves Lopetgui and co 13th in the league on 28 points, one place and one point above Forest who have a game in hand.

Wolves Now Open To Offers For £100k-p/w Star At Molineux

Wolverhampton Wanderers would be open to accepting offers for Matheus Nunes amid interest from Premier League rivals Liverpool, according to reports.

What's the latest on Nunes to Liverpool?

The Portuguese international only made the move to Molineux last summer meaning that his contract isn’t set to expire until 2027, but having impressed during his previous 30 appearances in the Midlands (prior to today’s game vs Chelsea), he has caught the eye at Anfield.

Back in January, Fabrizio Romano confirmed that the Old Gold midfielder held discussions regarding a potential move to Merseyside before joining Julen Lopetegui’s side. The Athletic have since reported that the Reds still retain an interest in signing the 24-year-old later in the summer as they look to revamp their central options.

The Mirror have claimed that the £44m release clause that the talisman had included in his terms when he signed has now been removed by the hierarchy so that they can demand a higher fee during the upcoming window, but this doesn’t seem to have put his admirers off wanting to secure his services.

Now, according to Football Insider, Liverpool are “still pushing” to sign Nunes despite the fact that his price tag will be initially higher than anticipated. FSG are “big admirers” of their target and are looking to take a second bite of the cherry after missing out on his signature to their top-flight rivals last summer.

Whilst Wolves would like to keep their 2022 big-money recruit, they “remain realistic” about the chances of that happening given their dangerous league and possibly financial position so it’s stated that an offer of £50m “would be accepted”.

Wolves midfielder Matheus Nunes.

Should Wolves keep or sell Nunes?

Wolves manager Lopetegui publicly praised Nunes earlier this year for his “good quality” and stated that he was “happy” with him, but as a result of him failing to make an impact in the final third, the club should cash in whilst they have the chance.

The Rio de Janeiro native has started 23 Premier League games this season prior to the Chelsea fixture so has been a regular feature in the matchday squad, but during that time, has scored zero goals and registered just one assist, lacking any kind of attacking prowess at the business end of the pitch, as per Transfermarkt.

Nunes also currently pockets £100k-p/w which makes him Wanderers’ joint-highest earner alongside Raul Jimenez and Joao Moutinho so sanctioning his sale would free up a huge amount on the wage bill and generate much-needed cash to fund potential new signings in the summer.

Aubameyang Will "Definitely" Exit Chelsea This Summer

Chelsea striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will "definitely leave" the club in the summer transfer window, according to journalist Simon Phillips.

What's gone wrong for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang?

The 33-year-old has endured a torrid time of things at Chelsea since arriving from Barcelona, in a move that has undoubtedly backfired. The attacker has made just 18 appearances for the Blues, scoring only three goals in the process, and he has looked a shadow of the player who once shone so brightly for the likes of Borussia Dortmund and Arsenal, where goals came so relentlessly.

It has become abundantly clear that Aubameyang has no future at Stamford Bridge under Graham Potter, with the Chelsea manager deeming him surplus to requirements and seemingly a rotten apple who needs to be away from his squad sooner rather than later.

The Gabon international's current Blues deal expires at the end of next season, meaning this summer is the last opportunity to receive a fee for his services, and an exit appears to be imminent.

Out-of-favour striker on the move?

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Phillips said that Aubameyang's time at Chelsea will certainly be up once the 2022/23 campaign reaches its conclusion:

"He's obviously just been spotted over in Barcelona watching the El Clásico. I've been told for weeks now that he will definitely leave in the summer, without a doubt. Barcelona are certainly one club to watch where he might go. They're pretty keen to bring him back. Xavi never wanted him to go in the first place, but they're not interested in paying any money for him, really, unless it's a very low fee."

Selling Aubameyang this summer is an absolute no-brainer for Chelsea, considering what a huge flop he has been since arriving last year. Granted, his age meant that there was a risk of a dropoff happening, but few saw him being this ineffective and featuring so little at this point.

Ultimately, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was happy to see the 73-cap and 30-goal Gabon star leave for a reason, seeing him as a disruptive influence, and the Blues must now do exactly the same, shipping him off elsewhere. It is important that Potter is able to build a young team that can grow into a force, with endless running and a strong team ethic part of his ethos, and Aubameyang doesn't fill the bill whatsoever, in that respect.

Tottenham Eyeing Summer Move For £50m Star

Tottenham Hotspur owners ENIC will look to sign James Maddison in the summer, regardless of who they appoint as manager at the end of the season, according to a recent report from Football Insider.

Will Tottenham win the race for James Maddison?

With Maddison's contract set to expire at the end of next season, this summer will be the last opportunity Leicester City have to cash in on their star player, and there is growing interest in his signature, from a whole host of Premier League clubs.

Tottenham are said to have leapfrogged Newcastle United into pole position, although Liverpool are also interested in the midfielder, while Manchester City have been linked, so a bidding war could be on the cards in the summer.

Given that the Englishman is likely to have a number of top clubs to choose from, it could be vital for Spurs to finish in the top four, so they can offer him Champions League football next season, but they are currently sitting three points behind Manchester United and Newcastle.

As per a report from Football Insider, the Tottenham board are dead-set on signing the 26-year-old this summer, and they will not wait for the new manager's approval before sanctioning a deal.

The Lilywhites are among the favourites to sign the £50m-rated Leicester star, and they're not going to slow their pursuit while they are without a manager, as they do not want to risk losing their lead in the race for his signature.

A new creative midfielder was identified as a priority signing while Antonio Conte was at the club, and Spurs believe he could go on to be a superstar in the Premier League.

Should Tottenham sign James Maddison?

Tottenham are very keen on a new creative force in the midfielder, and the two-time England international ticks plenty of boxes, ranking in the 89th percentile for assists per 90 in the past year, when compared to his positional peers, averaging 0.35.

Leicester City midfielder James Maddison.

Having also averaged 0.46 non-penalty goals per 90, there is clear evidence that the maestro would be a real attacking threat for Spurs, particularly considering he has managed to perform at that level in a struggling Leicester side.

Hailed as "sensational" by members of the media earlier this season, Maddison would be a fantastic signing for Tottenham, and they must now focus on securing Champions League football, in order to make sure they win the race for his signature.

Wolves Must Unleash £50k-p/w Star

Wolverhampton Wanderers’ will be hoping to return to the sort of form they showed in the first few weeks following the appointment of Julen Lopetegui when the Premier League season resumes this weekend.

The Old Gold have won just one of their previous six league matches and with the relegation battle proving to be extremely tight (the bottom nine are separated by just four points) it’s clear that they have to improve swiftly to avoid falling back into the bottom three.

The match against Nottingham Forest this weekend could be a crunch tie and Lopetegui will be looking at how his players have fared on international duty while working out his best possible starting XI ahead of the match.

One player who has impressed and could well be in contention for a start is winger Pedro Neto, who has only recently returned to the Wolves side following an injury which saw him miss the World Cup.

Will Pedro Neto start for Wolves against Forest?

The 23-year-old made his return from injury against Tottenham Hotspur at the start of the month, playing 45 minutes, while he played another 45 minutes in the two subsequent matches, and he is slowly getting back to full fitness.

Indeed, the player was called up to the Portugal U21 side for their international friendlies against Romania and Norway and was in wonderful form against the former just a few days ago.

Pedro Neto playing for Wolves

He started the match and scored a wonderful goal by using his pace to charge down the left wing before cutting inside and unleashing a shot with his right foot that nestled into the bottom corner. He also assisted the first goal with the coach then substituting him at halftime in order to keep him fresh for the tie against Norway.

The “huge talent” – as dubbed by Alan Shearer – will be hoping that his recent performances have shown Lopetegui he deserves a place in the starting XI.

If the winger can replicate his form he displayed during his first season at Wolves, where he scored five goals and registered five assists, then the Molineux side may well be able to preserve their league status for the fifth straight season, thus giving the new manager a foundation to build upon.

The £50k-per-week gem is returning to form at precisely the right time for Wolves and this could be vital heading into the final few weeks of what has been an underwhelming campaign.
