Sunderland’s prospective owners could save them millions

To put things kindly, Sunderland’s transfer business in the last few years has been nothing short of disastrous.

Although there have been some good acquisitions in the form of Luke O’Nien and Bailey Wright – two of the first names on the team sheet – there has been some appalling transfers.

Chief suspect in this is Stewart Donald, someone who has never really got things right in terms of recruitment.

He has worked through tough circumstances – having to keep budgets in check for a big club in League One – but he hasn’t helped his cause either.

When the Black Cats were led astray by Josh Maja’s agent when he left the Stadium of Light, desperate measures were taken.

Sunderland needed a new striker and they forked out £4m to sign Will Grigg. On paper, it was a good signing given his record for Wigan in the same division, but he has scored just eight goals in nearly two years.

Therefore, it will be interesting to see what kind of approach is taken under prospective new owners Kyril-Louis Dreyfus and Juan Sartori.

It’s already been suggested that Dreyfus could look to operate in the French market but have we received another inkling of how they could operate?

Well, according to France Football (via Sport Witness), the 22-year-old is looking to build a portfolio of clubs in France and Uruguay after taking over at Sunderland.

Now, this sounds a lot like the kind of process that’s in play at both Manchester City and Watford. Their respect owners – Sheikh Mansour and Gino Pozzo – have both ploughed investment into a host of clubs throughout world football.

The City group has a stake in Melbourne City, New York City and Girona in Spain among others. As for the Pozzo’s, they famously used their ties with Udinese to their advantage at Watford.

But why is this relevant to Sunderland? That’s because if Dreyfus takes influence from the Pozzo’s, then he could save millions in the transfer window.

By building a network of clubs, he can easily negotiate either sales or loan deals to benefit the Black Cats going forward.

When Watford were in the Championship, they signed no fewer than nine players from Udinese in the 2013/14 season. All of those deals were on free transfers. Had that link not been there, their squad will have looked vastly different and it is unlikely promotion would have been achieved.

If Dreyfus can invest in other clubs around the globe, it should only benefit Sunderland in the transfer market.

This is a cunning plan from the young businessman.

Rayan Ait-Nouri criticised during Man Utd encounter %%sep%% %%sitename%%

Many Wolves fans were sceptical of the performance of Rayan Ait-Nouri during side’s Premier League clash at Old Trafford against Manchester United.

The 19-year-old started in the left full-back position in what was only his third start for the Black Country club of the season since his loan move from Ligue 1 side Angers back in October.

Ait-Nouri, who is on a weekly salary of £36k-per-week at Molineux, was guilty on occasions of letting the Red Devils attackers run in behind after not getting out quickly enough from the back.

That being said, Wolves had plenty of chances in a game where they were facing one of the better sides in the Premier League and the young full-back was looking to get forward at times, but the occasion did look like it might have been getting the best of him.

Because of all of this, some supporters were critical of the Frenchman and they took to social media to voice their opinions.

1.   The Longest Yard

The Longest Yard is a cult-favorite that follows the life of inmates. Adam Sandler plays a washed-up football player who was very popular back in the day. The protagonist has a drunk-driving incident because of which he ends up in prison. One warden shows special interest in him because he’s aware of his athletic abilities.

Then, he received a task to create a football team from his new convict friends to play against the mean-spirited guards. The luck is on the convicts’ side, though, as the prison holds more than one superstar there. So, Paul (Adam Sandler) receives help from other convicts who have athletic history. It’s a great watch, very immersive, so we highly recommend it.

2.   Harvard Beats Yale

Harvard Beats Yale is a documentary about the legendary face-off between Harvard and Yale back in 1968. What makes this story particularly interesting is the fact that both teams were undefeated up until that point. This documentary is engaging, thrilling, and full of surprises. While the title gives away the name of the winner, it still doesn’t take away from the thrill that you’ll feel while watching it.

The documentary displays interviews with over 30 people who were a part of this event, as well as real footage from the game. With around one minute left until the end of the game, Yale leads 29-13. However, Harvard didn’t plan on giving up, which is why this game has become a historical monument for college football.

3.   The Last Boy Scout

The Last Boy Scout is a thrilling combination of sports, action, and crime. And who can better portray this type of movie than Bruce Willis? One key female witness is murdered, which leads to an extensive investigation that deals with corrupt politicians and football team owners.

The detective then forms a team with one of the players to try to solve this scary mystery. This is like an action hero movie with so much action that your heart rate will go crazy. They manage to discover a massive plot that involves the rich and wealthy – politicians and football magnates.

Overall, this is a great watch if you like action and sports. It will keep you on your toes until the very end of the movie. Fair warning – the movie is very graphic, it contains strong language, and it displays a lot of violence.

4.   The Express

The Express is a stellar football drama that follows the life of Ernie Davies, a renowned college football star. He is an extremely talented African-American athlete who played for Syracuse University. The movie sheds light on the relationship between Ernie and his coach. Ernie faces massive discrimination on the campus, as well as on the field.

This movie is just one example of how difficult things have been in the past for players who didn’t fit the classic standard mold back then. However, the coach always stands up for his players, trying to create an equal and safe environment for everyone. And guess what? The team makes it to the National Championships and has a great fight for the Heisman trophy.

5.   Jerry Maguire

Jerry Maguire follows a successful sports agent who is played by the legendary Tom Cruise. He has everything that a man would ever want to have – a gorgeous wife, superstar clients, and a ton of money. However, one evening, he starts having a moral breakthrough as he realizes all the downsides that come with his successful career.

He tries to share his newly-found thoughts with his colleagues. However, no one takes him seriously. He is then stripped of all his achievements and has to start from zero once again. He takes on one client. Now, he is on a mission to rebuild the career he once had. Watch the movie to find out what happens next.

Rangers: Update issued on Ben Davies

Journalist Alan Nixon has recently issued an update about Rangers’ interest in Preston North End’s Ben Davies.

While Football Insider had recently stated that Rangers had made a ‘significant’ offer to sign Davies on a pre-contract basis in the summer, Nixon has claimed the complete opposite about the Preston defender and his links with a move to Ibrox.

Rangers yet to make Davies offer

Alan Nixon tweeted about Rangers’ interest in Davies when a fan asked him about the player’s situation. He revealed “there’s no Rangers pre contract offer for Davies”, despite claims from Football Insider that an offer has been made.

It has also been stated that Rangers are competing with their Old Firm rivals and English clubs for Davies’ signature.

Davies has made 16 Championship appearances for Preston this season, coming up with one assist so far. All of his appearances have come from the centre-back position this season (as per Transfermarkt).

The 25-year-old is currently valued at £2.16m by Transfermarkt and he has been described as a player who is comfortable on the ball and confident in the air.

Davies could be a good signing for Rangers

With Nikola Katic injured and George Edmundson seemingly on the way out, Steven Gerrard only has three centre-back options in the team – Leon Balogun, Filip Helander and Conor Goldson.

Davies would add depth and ability to that position and his versatility – he can play either centre-back role or at left-back – would also be an extra reason why the Ibrox side would benefit from signing him.

Forget VAR: Villa’s Traore was poor vs Man City

After almost three weeks away from playing Premier League football, Aston Villa returned to top-flight action on Wednesday night as they took on Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

Dean Smith’s side were in the contest until well into the second-half, when controversy struck with just ten minutes to go. Tyrone Mings was adjudged to have played Rodri onside after the Spaniard stole the ball off him after coming from way behind, and Bernardo Silva stuck one into the corner of the net to set City on their way to victory.

And whilst VAR played a massive role in Villa’s 2-0 defeat to Pep Guardiola’s men, Bertrand Traore was a bit of a let-down for his manager too.

The Burkina Faso international was given the nod to start ahead of the in-form Anwar El Ghazi, who’s scored five goals in his last games in the Premier League.

And but for one of those stand-out ‘did you see it?’ moments where Traore made Kevin De Bruyne look a fool with an incredible first touch, it just wasn’t the former Lyon man’s night.

Too often he got himself into promising situations but couldn’t deliver a good enough end product, and his reliance on his stronger left foot meant that City could play him far more easily and just force him onto his weaker right.

In the 68 minutes that he was on the pitch, he lost possession 10 times, and given that he only 23 touches of the ball, he conceded possession with every 2.3 touches – by far the worst of any player on the pitch, and an indication of how much he still needs to adapt to the pace and physicality of the Premier League.

Traore failed to find his man with any of his three attempted crosses, whilst he only made four successful passes in the entire time that he was on the pitch. It certainly didn’t help his team that he wasn’t much of a help for Matty Cash defensively, which is quickly becoming a theme whenever he’s playing.

Whether it was Joao Cancelo who recognised that he could have a field day with Traore not tracking back, or Guardiola making that a part of his tactical blueprint before-hand, it was no surprise to see the Portuguese left-back be one of City’s chief creators on the night.

He had three shots, one of which hit the woodwork, completed 100% of his dribbles and had a whopping 108 touches of the ball – the joint-most of any City player, and showing how much City attacked down Traore’s side.

Writing in his post-match player ratings, The Birmingham Mail’s Ashley Preece said that he was “guilty of losing him as the City full-back burst forward to link up with Foden” and that he was “a bit wasteful on occasion”.

VAR might take the headlines, and rightly so given how it’s cost Villa. But Smith will also be very disappointed with Traore’s showing after showing him the faith to start him over El Ghazi.

Meanwhile, Villa may already have the perfect Jack Grealish back-up…

Everton still in talks for Zirkzee

Loads of Everton fans have been left hailing a transfer update from Fabrizio Romano on Joshua Zirkzee.

As per a tweet from the Italian football journalist and transfer guru, the Goodison Park faithful as well as Parma are still in talks with Bayern Munich over his potential signing in this month’s window, with talks still on, but no agreement has been reached with the reigning Bundesliga and UEFA Champions League champions as of yet.

The Merseyside club could do with some sufficient cover for Dominic Calvert-Lewin should the England international get himself injured or find himself out of form for a sustained period of time, and Zirkzee could well be that player, given that he has played at the highest level with the reining Champions League winners despite being a teenager.

Liverpool could still sign Shkodran Mustafi

Liverpool are on the verge of signing Preston defender Ben Davies on deadline day but it doesn’t look as though they are done there.

What’s the word?

Paul Joyce revealed late last night that Liverpool were in fact targeting two central defenders on transfer deadline day.

A move for Marseille defender Duje Ćaleta-Car now looks off the table but one move that could still happen is for someone plying their trade in the Premier League.

The Telegraph’s Chris Bascombe claimed in the last few hours that irons were in the fire and that Michael Edwards was spinning a few plates.

As a result of that, he noted it “could bring Shkodran Mustafi from Arsenal.”

The Reds have already been linked with a move for the £90-per-week centre-back in the window already in what would be a rather surprising move.

Edwards mistake

Liverpool may want two centre-backs on deadline day but it would be nothing short of a big error from Edwards to bring Mustafi to Merseyside.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/liverpool-deadline-day-latest-news-transfer-rumours-and-more” title=”Deadline day is here: Read the latest Liverpool news, transfer rumours and more!”]

The fact of the matter is that the German is far too error-prone and for a defence that has relied on Virgil van Dijk – one of the best in the world – it would be like swapping The Ritz-Carlton for a Premier Inn on the side of a motorway!

According to the Premier League’s official statistics, Mustafi has made three individual errors leading to a goal but if you reflect upon his actual performances, they are far worse than that number indicates.

In fact, Football.London noted in April 2019 that the German had made as many as six errors that cost Arsenal during that particular campaign. He is a clumsy centre-back, one who has never been able to eradicate a moment of madness from his game, hence why he’s not in Arsenal’s plans.

The Germany international is about as error-prone as they come and judging by that, Liverpool are probably better off maintaining Jordan Henderson and Nat Phillips at the back than picking him. After all, they shipped just once against in-form West Ham on Sunday evening.

Sunderland: Fans react to academy restructure

Fans of Sunderland have been reacting to a post on Twitter, which announced that an initial restructuring of the Sunderland AFC academy has taken place.

The post (tweeted by @SunderlandAFC) showed that their Sporting Director, Kristjaan Speakman, announced the news yesterday evening. Speakman began a review of the club’s operations when he joined in December 2020.

New chairman Kyril Louis-Dreyfus, who is just 23-years-old, completed Sunderland’s takeover last week after it was approved by the English Football League.

It seems that the Frenchman is wasting no time and following the first stage of the review, the Black Cats have installed a new leadership team within its youth set-up.

Lewis Dickman has been named as the new Academy manager and Leann Cowperthwaite will be their new Head of Academy Operations. Stuart English also becomes the club’s new Head of Coaching.

Sunderland fans have been critical of their youth academy in the past, but these fans appear to be delighted with the club’s most recent step forward.

What did Sunderland fans say in reaction to the post?

“It’s fantastic to see our club finally having a stable, progressive long term structure, a professional plan going forward – thank you KLD”

It would appear that Louis-Dreyfus has been welcomed handsomely since his arrival at Sunderland, despite his lack of experience. Fans are clearly happy with his positive attitude and passion, something that has been missing from the Black Cats for quite some while, and this one change will hopefully be the sign of things to come for Sunderland fans.

West Ham fans flock to ExWHUemployee claim

According to a report by reliable club insider ExWHUemployee, via West Ham Central, Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham has emerged as a potential signing for the summer window – and the fact he is close friends with Declan Rice could help sway a move to east London.

Abraham has been repeatedly linked with West Ham over the last two days, with reports from the Daily Star and Eurosport supporting ExWHUemployee’s claim that the Hammers hold an interest.

The latter man’s news, however, appears to have garnered the most attention from supporters – with the Irons source claiming there is a factor at the London Stadium which could tempt Abraham into a transfer.

Indeed, being close friends with Irons superstar Rice, ExWHUemployee has said this aspect could bolster the Hammers’ potential bid to sign Abraham this summer.

Flocking to this news, one West Ham fan even called it ‘massive’ – while others believe he would be a great signing for the club.

Renato Sanches destined for Liverpool move

Many Liverpool fans have been reacting to fresh reports suggesting that Lille midfielder Renato Sanches looks to be on his way to Anfield this summer.

This came from CalcioMercato, who revealed that the 23-year-old is destined for a move to Merseyside as they look to take advantage of a cost-cutting exercise from the Ligue 1 club. One fan described this news as ‘absolutely shocking’.

Sanches has only scored once and provided one assist in 20 appearances having picked up a number of injuries during the 2020/21 campaign. The Portugal international has missed a total of 12 games due to various muscle issues.

It has been well documented how much Liverpool have struggled this season themselves with constant first-team setbacks, which has seen them drop to sixth in the table having won the Premier League title last season.

Unsurprisingly, supporters were not willing to welcome someone to the club who has suffered as many setbacks as Sanches has, making their feelings clear to The Anfield Buzz on Twitter.
