Spurs: John Wenham on Lucas Moura’s future

Tottenham Hotspur forward Lucas Moura will reportedly remain at the club this summer after being given a ‘show of faith’ by Antonio Conte, according to Lilywhite Rose insider John Wenham.

The Lowdown: Out of favour

The Brazilian, whose contract with the north London outfit doesn’t expire until 2024, has made 41 appearances for Spurs in all competitions this season, with 24 starts and the 17 outings from the bench, making him more of an impact player rather than a first-team fixture.

A source from N17 told Football Insider in March that the club have no plans to get rid of the 29-year-old during the upcoming transfer window, despite him having fallen down the pecking order since the January arrival of Dejan Kulusevski, and Wenham seems to believe that they have made the right decision.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-newest-updates/” title=”Tottenham newest updates…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Valuable asset

The Tottenham insider has revealed that he is expecting Steven Bergwijn to leave the club at the end of the season rather than Moura, and he is glad that the Brazilian was given a chance after being named in the starting line-up for the 3-1 victory against Leicester City last weekend.

Wenham told Football Insider on Monday afternoon: “Kulusevski not starting was okay with me. People forget he barely played for Juventus and he has barely missed a minute since he’s been here so he needed a rest.

“I like Lucas Moura as a player and I had no issues with him coming in. It was a real show of faith from Conte as well.

“I rate him highly. In short, we will get more money for Bergwijn this summer and they are fairly similar players.

“Of the two of them, I’m certain Lucas is the one to keep. How many memorable moments does he have to his name?

“Even though he didn’t get a goal or anything yesterday, it seems to me he will be the one who stays.”

The Verdict: Future up in the air

The attacker will likely be given the opportunity to prove himself to Conte in pre-season, and the Italian may like what he sees, considering that Moura has averaged 1.7 dribbles and 1.1 shots per 90 minutes when on the pitch this term, via WhoScored.

The £80k-per-week star has been labelled a “bright spark” by Sky Sports pundit Jamie Mackie, and Brazilian’s former teammate Christian Eriksen has even admitted that Moura should be built “a statue” after his legendary Champions League semi-final hat-trick against Ajax three years ago this week.

It will be interesting to see whether or not Conte makes the 35-cap international an integral part of his plans ahead of next season as he looks to reinvent his squad in a bid to secure a top-four finish, but it’s not hard to see why Wenham is advocating a prolonged stay in north London for Moura.

Wolves: Daniel Podence nearing return

Wolves could have winger Daniel Podence available for the final three Premier League matches of the season.

What’s the latest?

According to goalkeeping coach Tony Roberts, as quoted by Birmingham Live, “Daniel has been doing a bit of training so we will see what happens with him.”

That was stated before yesterday’s thrilling 2-2 draw away at Chelsea with manager Bruno Lage unable to take the press conference nor travel to the capital following a positive virus test.

The Portuguese was absent from the matchday squad at Stamford Bridge and hasn’t featured for Lage’s side since the 2-1 win against Aston Villa over a month ago whilst nursing a foot injury.

However, his return will be incredibly timely with Wolves targeting a third seventh-place finish in four seasons.

Lage will be buzzing

It could definitely be argued that it’s no coincidence that Wolves had lost three games in a row without scoring whilst without Podence before yesterday’s draw.

Moreover, the West Midlands outfit had gone 2-0 down at Stamford Bridge before Chelsea crumbled and conceded two goals late on.

The 26-year-old has scored six times and registered three assists in 29 appearances across all competitions this term with goals a rarity for the Old Gold this season.

Only Burnley, Watford and Norwich have scored fewer Premier League goals than the Golden Boys’ 35, with the latter two now relegated.

Moreover, Podence’s tally is an improvement on the three goals and two assists last year, although the winger did score all three in the league whilst his tally in the top-flight currently stands at two this term.

With Wolves sat in eighth, there’s still a chance that the Black Country club secures European football for next season with seventh place West Ham just two points ahead whilst sixth-place Manchester United have an eight-point gap but have played two extra games.

Although it’s not in his side’s hands, Lage will be keen to have as many of his key players available for the final three games as possible as they look to make a late climb up the table.

If Podence can return to fitness in time for the final matches, it will certainly boost his side’s chances of securing European football.

Newcastle have ‘scouted’ Ismaila Sarr

Chronicle Live journalist Lee Ryder has provided an update on Newcastle United’s reported interest in Watford winger Ismaila Sarr.

The lowdown: Sarr ‘offered’ to Newcastle

Journalist Jacque Talbot recently revealed that the Magpies had been ‘offered’ the chance to sign the Senegal international this summer as Eddie Howe looks to strengthen the squad at St James’ Park.

Since then, the Hertfordshire-based outfit have suffered relegation to the Championship, so the 24-year-old could be looking for a way out of Vicarage Road.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-news-6/” title=”Newcastle news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

A fresh update has now emerged from a reputable source…

The latest: Newcastle have ‘scouted’ Sarr

As per Ryder for Chronicle Live, Newcastle have ‘scouted’ the 39-cap Senegal star and could be looking to make their move at the end of the season.

It’s claimed that Sarr – who scored when the two sides drew 1-1 at Vicarage Road in September – is an affordable option for the new-look St James’ Park ownership.

The report added that the winger – who was described as a ‘freak’ by teammate Ben Foster owing to his blistering pace – is ‘keen to stay in the top-flight’ and will be looking for wages in the region of £65,000 per week.

The verdict: Get it done

Newcastle will be hoping to make incremental improvements to the squad this summer, and the capture of Sarr would certainly provide exactly that.

So far this season, the 24-year-old has scored five times and provided two assists for a team which has spent the entire 2021/22 campaign in the lower reaches of the Premier League table. During that time, the versatile Senegalese forward has completed 1.5 successful dribbles per game, and would therefore provide a perfect foil for current Gallowgate favourite Allan Saint-Maximin.

Previously available for a mooted £35m amidst interest from Liverpool, Newcastle could be looking to land a bargain following Watford’s relegation to the Championship.

West Ham: Jim White shares major Rice update on talkSPORT

TalkSPORT presenter Jim White has shared a major West Ham United twist on Declan Rice’s contract situation live on air.

The Lowdown: Rice future up in the air?

While reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano says the Hammers star is open to leaving this summer after turning down a third new deal, club insider Claret & Hugh state he is set to commit his future until at least 2023.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-newest-updates/” title=”West Ham newest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Rice is attracting real attention from of the Premier League’s most elite clubs after another fine season at the London Stadium under manager David Moyes.

He is deemed ‘untouchable’ by owners GSB regardless of alleged interest from Man City, Man United and Chelsea recently.

Sharing a twist on Rice’s future, White has a major live-on-air update for supporters.

The Latest: White makes claim…

According to the talkSPORT presenter, the 23-year-old has been offered a staggering eight year deal to stay in east London, but there is a belief in Rice’s camp that he could get even more elsewhere.

He explained: “It is my understanding that West Ham are 99 per cent certain they will not sell Declan Rice this summer.

“Declan Rice has been offered an eight-year deal at West Ham United worth £200,000-a-week on a rising scale to match inflation.

“An eight-year deal worth £200,000-a-week. At this stage he is showing no inclinations to sign it.

“This eight-year deal could become a ten-year deal, if Declan and his people wanted such a deal worth £200,000-a-week.

“So would they sell? There is a belief in Declan Rice’s camp that he could get between £300,000-£400,000-a-week elsewhere. Whether that is true or not remains to be seen.”

The Verdict: Major claim…

Wages between £300,000-per-week/£400,000-per-week would put Rice in the same salary bracket as superstars like Kevin De Bruyne, and if his people truly believe he can earn that much, this comes as a pretty big bit of news.

One plus point for Irons supporters is the strong position their club are in with his current contract running until 2024.

West Ham also have an option to extend by a further year, meaning it’ll be quite some time before they truly become pressured to sell.

AC Milan eye move for Morgan Gibbs-White

Wolverhampton Wanderers starlet Morgan Gibbs-White has attracted interest from European giants AC Milan after a successful loan spell at Championship club Sheffield United.

What’s the word?

That is according to a report from Birmingham Live which claimed that the midfielder has hinted he would be open to a permanent move away from Molineux, although with the Blades’ failure to escape the Championship, it is unlikely that he would sign for the Yorkshire club permanently.

The Athletic reported that Gibbs-White’s stock has risen immeasurably and, as a result, Milan have enquired about the 22-year-old. The Staffordshire native fits into the Serie A leaders’ recent policy of signing young stars with vast potential.

Tim Spiers, who penned that piece for The Athletic, stated that Lage likes the player and wanted him back in January, but game-time at Wolves could be an issue for someone who has played 3,084 minutes of football this season for Sheffield United.

Lage facing disaster over Gibbs-White

Gibbs-White, who has been described as a “catalyst” by Laurie Whitwell, has lit up England’s second tier, finishing the campaign with 16 throughout his senior career thus far.

His loan spell with the Blades has been prosperous and has now seen his stock rise to the point where Serie A giants and title favourites Milan are interested in the 22-year-old.

Lage will have been relieved that Sheffield United did not achieve their goal of Premier League promotion, because if they did, he would have faced a tough battle to keep the youngster, who has enjoyed his time in south Yorkshire.

However, they might still face that challenge, and it’s no surprise as to why Milan are looking at the 22-year-old. His 12 goals and 10 assists would make him the Rossoneri’s top scorer and creator if he had replicated those numbers at San Siro this season, whilst his 16 big chances created this term would also see him rank top among Stefano Pioli’s squad.

Milan are missing an out-and-out creator in the engine room, with left-back Theo Hernandez setting up the most chances with 49.

That is something Wolves also lack, having created just 38 big chances this season, with their most established creator being Joao Moutinho with 38 standard chances created. Gibbs-White beats both Hernandez’s and Moutinho’s totals with 55 chances created.

Both Milan and Wolves will feel they need him, but Lage will need to give the starlet some assurances if he wants to avoid a summer transfer disaster, as the 22-year-old will surely not be short of offers in the summer.

In other news: Wolves can find Marcal heir in 19-year-old “who owns the left-flank”, Lage surely ecstatic

Man United must swoop for Jonathan David

Manchester United had their fans jumping for joy last summer when they announced that Cristiano Ronaldo would be making a return to Old Trafford.

Despite the 37-year-old finding the net 18 times in 30 Premier League appearances this season, he couldn’t carry his side to a top-four finish.

With 58 points on the board, the Red Devils finished sixth, having scored (and conceded) just 57 goals in 38 league games, a lower return than the likes of Leicester City and West Ham United.

One other Portuguese figure who could be seen as a bright light in a dark season for the Manchester club is Bruno Fernandes.

No other outfield player at United ended up playing more minutes than the midfielder, who scored 10 goals and delivered six assists in 36 appearances.

To further highlight his importance to the team, none of his team-mates came close to equalling the number of shot-creating actions (145) that Fernandes made throughout the campaign.

Now that the season has mercifully drawn to a close, the focus for the club and their new manager Erik Ten Hag can move on to the summer transfer window.

To make the Red Devils a deadlier team in an attacking sense, one player with whom they have been linked and who could do just that, potentially forming a scary duo with Fernandes, is Jonathan David.

Imagine him and Bruno

In 179 appearances between his previous club Gent and his current side Lille, the £45m-rated striker has scored 69 goals and supplied 20 assists across all competitions.

With 38 league outings to his name in Ligue 1 this season, the 22-year-old has racked up the highest number of shots on target (30) and the joint-highest number of successful dribbles (34) at his club.

This shows just how dangerous he can be in an attacking sense and illustrates why he could be a deadly figure for United if he has Fernandes feeding him with plenty of chances to score.

Labelled a “ruthless” player by Mark-Anthony Kaye, David is exactly the sort of player that the Red Devils need in their team to make them a scary attacking force again.

With all that in mind, the prospect of having an attacking duo of Fernandes and David should be enough for Ten Hag to launch a move for the striker in the coming weeks and months.

Leeds keen on James Garner

Victor Orta is eyeing up a Leeds United swoop for Manchester United’s James Garner heading into the summer transfer window…

What’s the talk?

According to The Mirror, the Yorkshire giants are one of three Premier League clubs keen on the midfielder ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.

The report claims that Leicester and Southampton are also keen on the youngster, with the former said to be willing to wait it out for his availability this summer.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-united-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-much-more-2″ title=”Read the latest Leeds news, transfer rumours and more!”]

It remains to be seen whether or not the Red Devils will be willing to send him out on loan, or a permanent deal, as Erik ten Hag is set to run the rule over his players in the coming weeks.

Jesse Marsch needs him badly

The American head coach needs Garner at Elland Road as he is badly in need of midfield reinforcements in the upcoming window.

No Whites central midfielder averaged a SofaScore rating higher than 6.85 and Mateusz Klich – who played 33 times – averaged an unimpressive score of 6.67. This suggests that Marsch does not have an array of quality in his options in the middle of the park, which is why Orta must look to bring in one, or two, players to bolster his selection.

Garner can be the player Leeds need as he has shown that he has the potential to be an excellent player at Premier League level.

The 21-year-old has enjoyed a stellar campaign on loan at Nottingham Forest in the Championship and earned plaudits for his displays.

Former Leeds goalkeeper Paul Robinson previously heaped praise on him, saying:

“Garner has been exceptional at Forest. He is an example of why players get sent out on loan.

“He can play at the top level and I think he has proven that at Forest. I don’t think he’s one that will go straight into the Man United side but I think there is a first-team role there for him and he will feature next season.”

These comments highlight how well the gem has performed and his statistics back that up.

In the Championship, he averaged an exceptional SofaScore rating of 7.26 as he scored four goals and created eight from midfield in 41 outings.

The £20k-per-week dynamo has been outstanding in the second tier and this is why he may have the ability to make the step up to the top flight.

If he can adapt to Premier League football and produce a similar level of displays then he will be an incredible signing for the Lillywhites and exactly what Marsch needs to improve his lacklustre midfield options.

West Ham eyeing move for Nayef Aguerd

West Ham United are eyeing a summer move for Moroccan centre-back Nayef Aguerd from Ligue 1 side Rennes this summer according to recent reports.

The Daily Mail recently revealed that The Hammers were looking to add depth to their squad after an impressive season that has seen them qualify for Europe and reach the semi-final of the Europa League.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-this-weeks-latest-west-ham-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-more” title= “Read the latest West Ham news!”]

One their list of targets is defender Nayef Aguerd, with The Evening Standard recently reporting that talks between Rennes and West Ham over Aguerd were progressing.

Any move is expected to cost £15m with the player contracted until 2025. Moyes is searching for a defender who is fast and can provide balance on the left.

If he sings then one of the players he will be competing with for a spot in the starting line-up is Craig Dawson. Despite Dawson being Premier League proven, Aguerd would be an upgrade and an option for the long term.

When you compare both players this season, the 26-year-old excels in a number of areas and offers attributes different to Dawson. He has recorded a higher number of combined tackles and interceptions at 84 compared to the Englishman’s 63.

It’s in possession where he is the most impressive, completing 26 more progressive carries of the ball than Dawson this season and 401 more touches in the defensive third, despite playing fewer games.

The Morrocan international is even good in the air, having won 108 aerial duels this season compared to 103 won by West Ham’s 32-year-old.

Ultimately he offers a lot more than Dawson, and even though he has played a massive part in The Hammers’ successes this season, if they want to push on for a Champions League place it’s about time they upgraded him.

Aguerd would be a complete bargain and offers all round skill as well as experience on the international stage with 19 caps for his country.

He’s even been described as a “cerebral person” by former Rennes manager Julien Stephen.

It’s set to be an exciting summer ahead for manager David Moyes and it’s important that they spend the money they are given wisely.

They’ll struggle to compete with the bigger clubs in the league for the top players, so their best bet is to buy smart, and Aguerd should certainly be one of the first on the list – at £15m, he’s an absolute bargain.

Palace: Crook makes Johnstone claim

Crystal Palace are on the verge of singing England goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, according to talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook.

The lowdown: Wanted man

Set to become a free agent at the end of the month, Johnstone has previously attracted the attention of West Ham United, Newcastle United, Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur.

However, Palace recently emerged as the main protagonist for the 29-year-old’s signature as Patrick Vieira attempts to bolster the goalkeeping department at Selhurst Park.

Despite an apparent lull in the proceedings, it’s now been claimed that Johnstone remains on course to arrive in South East London in the near future…

The latest: Crook on Johnstone

Speaking live on talkSPORT during his transfer notebook segment, Crook suggested that the three-cap England man is set to become a Palace player when his contract expires at West Brom.

He said: “I was told a couple of weeks ago that Crystal Palace are very close to signing Sam Johnstone, I’ve got no reason to believe that is off course.

“I think if he went there he would go as number one as well.”

The verdict: Smart move

Snapping up a goalkeeper of Johnstone’s calibre to compete with and perhaps usurp 35-year-old Vicente Guaita would be a superb piece of business from the club.

Despite suffering relegation from the Premier League in 2020/21, the former Manchester United academy prospect caught the eye with some standout displays for West Brom, earning high praise from former Palace boss Sam Allardyce, who hailed the stopper as ‘one of the best’ following a 1-1 draw against Liverpool.

Johnstone continued to impress in the Championship last season, making on average 1.6 saves per game whilst keeping an impressive 15 clean sheets in what was a disappointing campaign overall for West Brom.

As a free transfer, this deal would make an abundance of sense for Palace, particularly as Jack Butland has been heavily linked with a move away this summer and as it would leave money in the coffers for Vieira to strengthen other necessary positions in the squad.

Fabrizio Romano drops big Liverpool update

Liverpool have been hit with a huge blow as it was revealed last month that Sadio Mane wants to leave Anfield this summer, and now a new update has emerged from a reliable source on the ongoing situation.

What’s the latest?

Italian journalist and transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has revealed an update on the back and forth between Liverpool and Bayern Munich over their intentions to agree on a deal for Mane, with two bids from the Bundesliga giants already rejected by the Merseyside club.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-liverpool-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-salah-gnabry-isak-romano” title= “Read the latest Liverpool news!”]

Romano took to his YouTube channel to reveal: “The position of the player has not changed.

“Bayern already had two bids refused by Liverpool for Sadio Mane, but from what I’m told today [Sunday], Bayern are preparing a new bid for Sadio Mane and the feeling around the deal is that the positions of Bayern and Liverpool in the negotiations are getting closer and closer.

“Bayern are really close to completing the signing of Sadio Mane.”

Supporters will be upset

There is no doubt that Liverpool supporters will be upset at the news that Mane’s time at Anfield is coming to an end when you consider the huge part he has played in the club’s recent success over his six years at the club.

Mane has scored 120 goals and delivered 48 assists since joining in 2016, with a goal contribution every 128 minutes which has led the side to win a Premier League title, Champions League, Carabao Cup and FA Cup during his time in the team.

The Senegalese winger’s success with Liverpool has seen his market value soar over the years, with Transfermarkt valuing the player at just £27m in August 2016 rising to £135m in December 2019 and is currently set at £72m, however the club are now reportedly willing to sell the player in the last 12 months of his contract for £42.5m.

That’s another cause for concern with the club clearly not being able to fetch a price that fairly matches his abilities.

Despite the player becoming a fan favourite and dubbed a “Liverpool legend” by Gabby Agbonlahor, the club has already made massive strides in finding a player who can replace Mane’s goal contributions in the team with the signing of Darwin Nunez reportedly set to be announced today.

With that being said, it will obviously be a big disappointment to see the Liverpool attacker leave this summer but the fact that FSG are identifying ways to replace him will be a massive relief to supporters ahead of next season.
