Liverpool must finally seal Raphinha move

Liverpool must seal a move for Leeds United winger Raphinha this summer whilst fighting off interest from other interested clubs.

What’s the latest?

According to Spanish outlet Sport, FC Barcelona are interested in signing the Brazilian and consider him top of their list for strengthening the right wing position. This is worrying news for Liverpool who were linked to the player in March after he impressed at relegation-threatened Leeds.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-liverpool-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-salah-gnabry-isak-romano” title= “Read the latest Liverpool news!”]

If the Reds are to sign him then they need to move fast before other clubs secure his services first. Despite being rated at £40.5m he could be available for as little at £25m if the club aren’t in the Premier League.

He could replace Salah

Liverpool may need a replacement for Mohamed Salah sooner than they think. The Egyptian still hasn’t agreed to sign a new contract, and with his deal expiring next year, the club won’t want to risk keeping hold of him past this summer if he continues to reject their offers.

Signing Raphinha could be the perfect solution to the problem and would allow the club to rest easy should their star man leave. The forward is only 25-years-old so has many years left in him and playing under Klopp gives him the potential to develop into a world class star.

Given what the German manager did with Salah and Sadio Mane amongst others, and what he seems to be doing now with Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota, surely you would want to play for him.

Raphinha has been directly involved in 13 goals this season and is the top scorer at Elland Road. He’s been described as a “magic” by the Athletic’s Patrick Boyland and a “wizard” by FIFA. Indeed, if Leeds manage to beat the drop, his tricks will be the reason why.

If you compare him to other players in his position across Europe’s top five leagues this season, you can see why some of the biggest clubs in Europe admire him. He ranks in the top 3% for progressive passes and the top 12% for key passes in a game.

Replicating those statistics as Anfield would be impressive, but he would no doubt vastly improve them by playing in a better side and under a better manager.

Liverpool need to buy for the future this summer and Raphinha can be the perfect signing to help do that.

Leeds: Danny Mills makes Patrick Bamford claim

Pundit and former Leeds United defender Danny Mills has made an injury claim regarding Patrick Bamford, as per Football Insider.

The Lowdown: Bamford back on the pitch

The 28-year-old has been limited to a mere seven Premier League starts this season, playing just 559 minutes of action due to a number of injuries.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-43/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-03-10T184055Z_1834933207_UP1EI3A1FW561_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-AVA-REPORT-1-scaled-1.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

His latest foot issue came against Wolves in March, although it looks as if he could have a part to play in the final games of the season as Leeds battle to avoid the drop.

Jesse Marsch confirmed last week that the striker has been back out on the Thorp Arch training pitches, but Mills had his concerns regarding Bamford’s fitness.

The Latest: Mills’ claim on Bamford

Mills, who contributes for Sky Sports, was talking to Football Insider regarding the Leeds striker.

He said that starting Bamford and having to take him off would be ‘disruptive’ to Marsch’s tactical setup and urged caution over the use of the 28-year-old given his injury troubles over the past few months.

The 44-year-old warned:

“It would be a real risk to have him as the main man up front going forward.

“He could break down at any moment, so to have him playing minutes if he’s not 100% – it’s a risk.

“If you have to then take him off, it’s disruptive. You’ve laid all your plans around him playing and having an impact.

“If you then have to take him off, it’s a bit like ‘oh no’ – because you have to change your set-up and your tactics completely if you’re Jesse Marsch.”

The Verdict: Impact sub?

Should Bamford return to the matchday squad for the final three games of the season, it could be wise if Marsch decided for an opposing plan to the one back in March.

Bamford was given the nod from the off in wins over Norwich and Wolves, but he failed to play more than 45 minutes in either game.

Therefore, it could be wise to use the striker as an impact sub instead of starting in upcoming games against Brighton, Brentford and possibly even Chelsea on Wednesday, with the Whites now at a make-or-break stage of the season.

Rangers: Pete O’Rourke drops transfer claim

A big Rangers claim has emerged on Ibrox duo Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent ahead of the summer transfer window in Glasgow…

What’s the talk?

Transfer insider Pete O’Rourke has claimed that securing a place in the Champions League will play a big role in being able to retain the club’s best players heading into the 2022/23 campaign.

The Gers will go straight into the group stage of the competition next term if they come out on top in the Europa League final in Seville on Wednesday night.

O’Rourke told GIVEMESPORT: “If you’re playing Champions League football, it’s going to help your chances of keeping hold of your best players, the likes of Morelos and Kent, who obviously would like to be playing at the highest level.

“So, if Rangers can go on and win it and they get in the Champions League, it’s only going to help their chances of keeping their best players at the club for the foreseeable future.”

Gio van Bronckhorst will be excited

The Ibrox manager will be excited by the prospect of being able to keep both players at the club if his side can win the Europa League this week.

Whilst it is not a guarantee that either player will stay, O’Rourke believes that it will have an impact on their potential outgoings this summer. The club might be able to offer both of them European football at the top level and will therefore be able to add talented players around them in the market instead of sourcing replacements for them.

Both Kent and Morelos have been crucial to the Gers this season and Van Bronckhorst will be desperate for them to remain in Glasgow. The former has been a creative threat throughout the campaign, with three goals and 19 assists in all competitions so far.

Meanwhile, the latter has racked up 19 goals and eight assists in all competitions. Before suffering a season-ending injury, the Colombian was on fire for Rangers as the figurehead of their attack with his ability to both score and set up goals on a regular basis.

The pair’s respective statistics this term illustrate how important they have been to the team and shows why it would be a major boost to keep them at the club. This is why Van Bronckhorst will be excited by the thought of having both players in his starting XI come the start of next season, if they can first get the job done against Eintracht Frankfurt tomorrow night.

Newcastle must unleash Jacob Murphy today

Newcastle travel to face Burnley at Turf Moor in their final match of the 2021/22 Premier League campaign this afternoon.

The Magpies have enjoyed a stellar second half of the season, as they have gone from battling the Clarets to avoid relegation to now being safe and eyeing up a top-half finish.

Mike Jackson’s side head into the match just above the drop zone and need a win to secure survival, although they will achieve their target as long as they match Leeds’ result against Brentford.

Meanwhile, Newcastle have a top-ten finish to aim for as they sit two points off Brighton in 10th. This would be the icing on the cake for Eddie Howe’s first campaign in charge and set the standard heading into the summer.

Speaking of which, the upcoming transfer window may be a nervy one for fringe players at St James’ Park – and even some more regular starters – as PIF potentially invest more money into the squad.

Players will be wondering whether or not they have a future at the club, and one gem who could be in danger of being axed is Jacob Murphy.

The £35k-per-week dynamo has only started 13 matches this season and has averaged a SofaScore rating of 6.68 in the Premier League. This shows that the overall standard of his displays has been underwhelming at best, and PIF will surely not want to have underperforming players wasting a place in the squad.

The 27-year-old has been unable to break into the team on a regular basis, and he may be a player that the club have in mind as someone they can upgrade upon in the coming months.

Howe must unleash Murphy

Murphy does have the potential to come good for Newcastle, though. Howe has previously hailed the winger, saying: “He’s a very good player. He’s physically excellent and I think you can see that from the first goal [against Brighton] he created and the pace he gives you on transitions.

“He’s reliable defensively and tactically very good. There’s a lot to like about him. I think there’s a lot to come as well – there is a lot more [talent] in there.”

The Toon head coach clearly believes that there is something to work with regarding Murphy, and that is why the 27-year-old must be unleashed against Burnley, having only appeared as a substitute in Newcastle’s last three matches.

It is his last-chance saloon to show the club that the £12m signing deserves to stay at St James’ Park and remain a part of the long-term project. He needs to produce a big performance against the Clarets and finally click in a Magpies shirt to put down a marker, given that he has struggled for minutes and form throughout the current campaign.

If he fails to do so, then it may be time for PIF to cut ties with him and replace him with another winger in the upcoming transfer window. It could a huge day at Turf Moor for the ex-Norwich man…

Leeds: Donnohue drops Drameh update

Joe Donnohue has dropped an update on the future of Leeds United right-back Cody Drameh.

What’s the latest?

In a recent post on Twitter, the Yorkshire Evening Post journalist revealed that, despite the defender’s long-term future at Elland Road previously looking extremely uncertain, after the 20-year-old held talks with Jesse Marsch regarding his place in the Whites squad, the England U21 international is now fully committed to earning a place in the 48-year-old’s starting XI next season.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-united-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-much-more-2″ title=”Read the latest Leeds news, transfer rumours and more!”]

In his tweet, Donnohue said: “Cody Drameh was Cardiff’s Player of the Season after going on loan in January, but is focused squarely on LUFC now. With [Luke] Ayling (2-4 months) & [Stuart] Dallas (6 months) on crutches, there’s no time like the present. He & Marsch have already spoken of his intention.”

Supporters will be buzzing

Considering just how exciting a talent Drameh quite clearly is, in addition to it previously looking as if the right-back’s time in LS11 was all but over, Donnohue’s update that the 20-year-old now intends to stay and fight for a place in Marsch’s first team is sure to be news that will have the Elland Road faithful buzzing.

Indeed, over his 22 Championship appearances in 2021/22, the £2.7m-rated full-back more than proved his undoubted ability, registering three assists and creating four big chances for his teammates, as well as making an average of 0.6 key passes and completing 1.1 dribbles per game.

The £4.4k-per-week defender also impressed in metrics more typical of his position, helping Cardiff keep six clean sheets, in addition to making an average of 1.0 interceptions, 3.8 tackles, 2.0 clearances and winning 6.9 duels – at a success rate of 57% – per fixture.

These returns saw the former Fulham starlet average a quite extraordinary SofaScore match rating of 6.92, ranking him as the Bluebird’s fourth-best performer in the second tier of English football.

As such, it is clear to see that the defender choosing to remain at Leeds in order to fight for a starting spot ahead of seeking a move away from the club is fantastic news for everyone involved with the Whites, as Drameh undoubtedly boasts the potential to overtake Ayling in Marsch’s right-back pecking order next season.

Liverpool held talks over Mbappe move

Liverpool could lose Sadio Mane this summer but they may well have had his replacement already lined up if a mega-money deal went their way.

What’s the word?

James Pearce’s latest column for The Athletic this week revealed some interesting transfer lines with the Reds supposedly shortlisting Jarrod Bowen and Jonathan David ahead of possible summer moves.

However, the most intriguing line from Pearce was a swift mention of a certain Kylian Mbappe.

The Frenchman’s contractual situation at PSG had been a controversial saga but it is finally put to bed now with Mbappe eventually turning down Real Madrid and signing a new deal.

That said, he could have ended up at Anfield. Pearce wrote: “Senior Anfield figures held talks over a potential free-agent deal for Kylian Mbappe earlier this year but it soon became clear that they just couldn’t make the numbers work financially.

“It became a straight shootout between staying at Paris Saint-Germain and joining Real Madrid after his contract expired. The France international opted for the former.”

Surprising news

There have been murmurs beneath the surface of potential interest from Liverpool in Mbappe for a while now.

The World Cup winner has admitted his intrigue with the Merseysiders before, calling them a “machine” but to hear that there was genuinely a move to try and get a deal done from a reputable source will surprise the entire fanbase at Anfield.

FSG haven’t spent a great deal in recent years with the only signing last summer being that of Ibrahima Konate.

The only acquisition in January, meanwhile, was attacking star Luis Diaz. That move, however, was fast-tracked due to interest from other parties.

Therefore, the arrival of Mbappe with Mane and Mo Salah’s futures with Liverpool uncertain would have been quite the coup.

Their title rivals in Manchester City have already signed Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund and this is a swoop that would have usurped that considering his talents.

Valued at a staggering £213m by CIES, he is one of the best footballers on the planet having beaten the goalkeeper on 171 occasions in 217 outings for PSG.

39 of those goals came this season as he ran riot in the French top-flight throughout 2021/22. With that in mind, the arrival of Mr Mbappe in England would have been greeted with much fanfare.

It will come as no surprise that the finances were wrong for Liverpool but it is a shock that they even explored a move in the first place.

Perhaps Jurgen Klopp’s side will see this as one that got away in a year’s time.

Man City must complete Bastoni transfer

Manchester City have shown over recent years that they are capable of signing players from other top clubs across Europe.

Previous summer transfer windows have seen the Citizens secure deals for players such as Ruben Dias, Rodri and Joao Cancelo among others.

One other player that the Manchester club have signed from another European team that has turned out to be a phenomenal bit of business for them is Aymeric Laporte.

Signed from Athletic Bilbao back in the 2018 January transfer window for a then club record fee of £57m, the defender has gone on to make 155 appearances for Pep Guardiola’s side across all competitions.

In those appearances, the Spaniard has scored 12 goals, provided three assists and won numerous domestic trophies including four Premier League titles.

Now that his latest season with City has come to an end, the upcoming summer transfer window could give the club the chance to replicate the same sort of masterclass they pulled off by bringing Laporte to the Etihad.

Last month it was reported that City had reportedly spoken with the representatives of Inter Milan centre-back Alessandro Bastoni over a potential summer move.

The 23-year-old joined the Italian giants in the 2017 summer transfer window from fellow Serie A side Atalanta.

Since then the centre-back has made 118 appearances for the club, scoring three goals and providing eight assists in the process.

Labelled as a “special talent” by journalist Muhammad Butt, Bastoni has a reported price tag of €60m (£51m), meaning that it would cost City a similar sort of fee to the one that shelled out to sign Laporte.

To highlight his defensive talent, the Italy international ended the recent Serie A campaign in the top five for the average number of tackles (1.4), interceptions (1.1), clearances (1.8) and blocks (0.4) he made per game in Inter’s ranks.

With the current City defender racking up the third-highest average for clearances (1.8) and second-highest average for blocks per game in the Premier League this season in Guardiola’s squad, he has also once again proven himself as a solid defensive unit for the team.

Despite having the joint-best defensive record in the Premier League this season, should Guardiola feel the need to add some extra strength to that area of his squad, signing Bastoni could be the best way to do just that.

Tottenham: Sky Sports reporter shares big transfer update

Sky Sports journalist Dharmesh Sheth has now shared an exciting Tottenham Hotspur transfer update with manager Antonio Conte seemingly getting the club’s full backing.

The Lowdown: Conte eyes major upgrades…

After he sealed a Premier League top four finish and the riches of Champions League football, it appears Spurs will go all out to ensure Conte’s desired transfers are fulfilled.

Their £150 million equity increase will be used to back the Italian after his brilliant first season in charge with the club already confirming two new signings in Ivan Perisic and Fraser Forster on Bosman deals.

It is believed that Lilywhites transfer chief Fabio Paratici is now after a left-sided central defender with Inter Milan star Alessandro Bastoni among Conte’s top targets.

The Latest: Sheth shares exciting update…

According to Sky reporter Sheth, Spurs are now ‘in talks’ to sign the 23-year-old with both Conte and Paratici keen to get business done in early fashion.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-developments-2/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

He explained (via Twitter):

“Tottenham in talks with Inter Milan to sign central defender Alessandro Bastoni. Antonio Conte & Sporting Director Fabio Paratici keen to get majority of transfer business done before pre-season. Bastoni played for Conte when Inter won Serie A title in 2020/2021.”

The Verdict: Get it done…

While Bastoni is reluctant to leave the San Siro, a major bid will apparently make chairman Steven Zhang green-light a sale – specifically around €70 million (£60m).

Tipped as Italy’s next generation defensive star after Giorgio Chiellini, the Serie A starlet has also been called ‘technically brilliant’ by Italian football expert Conor Clancy.

If Spurs can make Bastoni their third signing after Forster, it’s safe to say this would be the club’s best start to a summer window before it’s even opened.

Tottenham contact made as Conte eyes ‘world class signing’

Tottenham Hotspur have made contact as they eye a possible ‘world class signing’ for manager Antonio Conte, according to a report by The Times.

The Lowdown: Conte gets busy…

Since meeting with club chief Fabio Paratici for a transfer summit in Italy recently, Conte and the Lilywhites have confirmed two new arrivals in Ivan Perisic and Fraser Forster.

Having clinched a place in the Premier League top four at the end of 2021/2022, gaining the riches of Champions League football for next campaign, chairman Daniel Levy and ENIC granted a £150 million equity increase to back Conte this summer.

The window is now officially open for business and next on Tottenham’s agenda is reportedly a left-sided centre-half.

The Latest: Spurs make Torres contact…

The Times, sharing an update on the north Londoners’ plans, have some significant news involving defensive target Pau Torres of Villarreal.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-developments-2/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

According to their information, Paratici and co have made contact to sign the 25-year-old through a recent enquiry – a second approach for Torres, who turned them down last summer during Nuno Espirito Santo’s reign.

However, as they eye a move, it is believed Spurs aren’t alone with Man United also firmly in the mix.

The Verdict: Make the move…

After the agent of Alessandro Bastoni all but dashed Conte’s hopes of sealing his number one target, we believe Torres is an ideal alternative.

Tottenham pundit John Wenham, speaking to Football Insider, called the Spain international a potential ‘world-class signing’ for the club and we’re inclined to agree going by his stats.

According to WhoScored, only goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli played more minutes in La Liga last season for Villarreal than Torres with Unai Emery’s mainstay also winning the joint-most aerial duels and making the second-most clearances per 90.

We’d advise Paratici to get moving.

Newcastle transfer news on Fernandes

Journalist Jacque Talbot has now revealed some ‘discussions’ that have taken place between Newcastle United and Braga winger Roger Fernandes.

The Lowdown: Record-breaker

Fernandes burst onto the scene last season at Braga, and at just 15 years of age, he became the youngest player ever to feature in the Portuguese top flight.

Still only 16 and capable of playing on either flank, he is sure to attract plenty of interest this summer, and so the St. James’ Park outfit may have some competition on their hands to secure his signature.

The Latest: ‘Discussions’

Taking to Twitter, Talbot has revealed that there have already been some ‘discussions’ between the North East club and Fernandes over a possible move to Tyneside:

“Heard there was some discussions between Newcastle and Roger Fernandes of Braga.”

The Verdict: Squad player?

It is hard to envisage how exactly Fernandes would fit in should he make the move to the Magpies, given that he is only 16 and unlikely to be ready for full pelt Premier League football.

However, he is already playing senior football in Portugal, and was impressive when called upon by Braga last term, with three goals in 11 games (Transfermarkt).

The winger may not start ahead of the more experienced heads of Allan Saint-Maximin or Ryan Fraser, but he could still be a useful squad player for Eddie Howe, and so this is a deal that the Toon may be looking to the future with, spotting a talent with immense long-term potential.
