Cook aims for 'remarkable' Ashes glory

Alastair Cook has suggested that winning the Investec Ashes this summer would rate as “the biggest achievement” of his career

Not ideal to meet a coach a week from the Ashes – Cook

Alastair Cook has suggested that winning the Investec Ashes this summer would rate as “the biggest achievement” of his career.Cook, the England captain, feels that after losing the last Ashes series 5-0 and an 18-month period in which they have lost three coaches and been eliminated early in the World Cup, victory would represent a remarkable transformation and would help “restore the pride of English cricket.”Inspired by the manner in which New Zealand played, Cook also hopes England can build on the apparent upsurge of popularity in the sport over the last month or two and play in a spirit and with a style that brings not just success but admiration. In particular, he hopes that the verve shown by the younger player during the Test victory at Lord’s or success in the white-ball games can be replicated in the Ashes.”It would be my best achievement,” Cook said of Ashes victory. “I think it would be the biggest achievement of a lot of our careers. From where we have been, if we did win the Ashes at The Oval, it would be a remarkable achievement and one I would be very proud of.Alastair Cook on…

Mark Footitt
“He is now ready for international cricket. He is 29, has had a fair few injuries, he has got through that, he has bowled a lot of overs and he now knows his game. He knows the skill of bowling and also be able to work a batsman out and set him a little bit more than he did three or four years ago. I have been impressed with him. I would love to see him in the environment when he has had a little bit more rest and recuperation. For him to take the next step he will be bowling at that brisk high 80s and swinging the ball which I know he can do.”
Adil Rashid
“Adil didn’t bowl as well as he could have done at the beginning of the Caribbean your. Those who saw that St Kitts game would have recognised that. He had one opportunity to impress in that warm-up game and unfortunately we thought it too much of a gamble to play him in that Test side. But he has grown a lot on that tour, he did a lot of work and improved a lot. He has gone back to Yorkshire, done really well and then delivered in an England shirt in a fantastic one-day series. It would be far less of a gamble to pick him now.
Moeen Ali
“Moeen has had an interesting ride in Test cricket; like everyone. You have some good times and then some tough times and sometimes it doesn’t go as well no matter how hard you try. It doesn’t quite come out as well as it did last summer when I thought he bowled beautifully against a side with players who are very good against spin. We know how good Mo can be and obviously the fact that he bats incredibly well helps him.”

“What is driving us as a side is what has happened over the last six weeks, restoring the pride of English cricket, making cricket feel popular again and enjoying that, enjoying what it has done to people and making stars of people.”The support we’re getting from people is a different kind of support from what I have ever experienced throughout my eight or nine years. That general optimism and excitement about English cricket hasn’t happened for the last 15 months. People are talking about us scoring 400 and chasing down 350 with seven overs to go. And saying “Did you see that shot?” You only had to walk down the street. I think that’s what’s inspiring this side at the moment.”England are looking beyond inspiring ‘just’ the side, though. While England won the Ashes 3-0 in 2013, they never seemed to quite capture the public imagination. But this year, Cook hopes England will win over spectators not just with results, but with their style of play. They will also use their training camp in Spain to reflect on the spirit with which they will play and, specifically, whether to engage in sledging. As New Zealand showed, it is perfectly possible to play tough, uncompromising cricket with a smile not a snarl.”We have all taken a big lesson over what happened over the last five weeks,” Cook said, referring to the excellent spirit in which the matches against New Zealand were played. “No matter how much cricket you have played you are always learning. The way that both sides conducted themselves in that series was a refreshing approach and everyone enjoyed it.”The way we play cricket – sledging and stuff – we have to do what is authentic to us as a side. Whatever we do, we have to be authentic to us as players. You can’t compare this side to the side in 2011 or 2005. It has to be how this side wants to go about it and using our characters. It is part of what we will talk about at the training camp in Spain.”There was another indication of a possible change of direction from Cook towards the captaincy. While he has previously suggested he would “never” quit as captain, he has now suggested that he may rethink his position at the end of the Ashes series.”I don’t know,” he said when asked if he would continue. “Since we lost Ashes 5-0 I have taken every series as an individual event. We all saw how quickly things could change at Christmas last year. I am just going to do this series.”We have such an opportunity to play Australia here with cricket hitting the headlines for the right reasons and a real good feel factor and vibe about the game. We have got that to look forward to. Let’s look at that and not worry about anything else. Come August I will sit down with everyone, with Trevor Bayliss, and we will plot a path forward or we will see. But just before an Ashes series is not the right time to talk about that.”

More questions than answers in BCCI's response to Lodha

The BCCI has decided to submit to the Supreme Court a consolidated response to the Lodha Committee’s recommendations, based on its members’ views

The SGM convened by the BCCI to discuss the Lodha Committee’s recommendations played out on predictable lines, with the board deciding to submit a consolidated response based on its members’ views. The BCCI has entrusted its secretary Anurag Thakur with filing an affidavit pointing to the “anomalies and difficulties” in implementing the recommendations. While the BCCI did not elaborate on these anomalies in its press release, it is understood that they pertain to certain recommendations such as bringing the BCCI under the Right To Information act, the one-state, one vote rule and the age cap for office bearers. The head of a state association, who was present at the SGM, suggested that the discussion was fairly open-ended. “There are ten different people standing up with ten different things. Each state association has its own problem,” he told ESPNcricinfo. “In the meeting each state committee gave their report to the BCCI so the BCCI is going to take a collective view and file an appropriate response. The grievances or points pointed out by the various state associations will be brought to the notice of the Supreme Court.”While he ruled out the possibility of member units fighting their own legal battle, a top BCCI official said nothing stopped a state association from doing so if it wished. An official of the Cricket Club of India, which according to the Lodha report has “no cause” to be treated as a Full Member, admitted to mulling legal action. “Our contributions to the BCCI over the years have been significant,” he said. “We will present our arguments to the Supreme Court.”There also appeared to be a lack of clarity on when the affidavit would be submitted. IPL chairman Rajiv Shukla said it could be done before March 3, the deadline given by the Supreme Court, but BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur hinted that it was unlikely to be done by then. The other point of discussion was the governance and financial restructuring of the ICC following the ICC board and committee meetings earlier this month. It is learnt that some members were not too pleased with BCCI president Shashank Manohar’s proposal of a new revenue-sharing arrangement that could see the board lose a significant chunk of its revenue.”If there is monetary loss to the BCCI then people want to take a look at the suggestion”, the state association head said. “It was just a suggestion made [by Manohar] so the president and the secretary have to take a look at those contracts. It’s a step-by-step process. In one meeting there are 40 people sitting. So nothing can’t be decided soon. Slowly the path will come.”There was similar ambiguity over the reworking of the Future Tours Programme from 2016 to 2023 in order to “ensure equitable distribution of the matches.” While no official was available for comment on the matter, it is understood to be a suggestion put forth by Manohar to ensure that the smaller boards’ teams don’t suffer from a few powerful member boards firming up mutually convenient schedules.

ICC's global development head Anderson to step down

Peter Della Penna11-Apr-2016

Tim Anderson (R) is being retained part-time to assist with ICC’s continued restructuring and development efforts in the USA•Peter Della Penna

Tim Anderson, ICC’s head of global development, is set to step down from his role in June after 16 years of service with the governing body. Anderson has been in his current role since taking over from Matthew Kennedy in 2010.The announcement was made by David Richardson, the ICC chief executive, on Monday. “During his time at the ICC, Tim has been a passionate believer in the importance of membership benefits being provided on merit,” he wrote in an email to the ICC staff. “Tim has overseen strong recent progress in the game’s development, including unprecedented participation growth within Associate and Affiliate Members (AMs), from 580,000 in 2010 to 1.5 million at the end of 2015.”The performances of the top AMs have also improved markedly in recent years, particularly at the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 and the ICC World Twenty20 2014 and 2016. An important factor in this regard has been the enhanced qualifying events that have been put in place during Tim’s tenure, including the ICC World Cricket League Championship and ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier. Tim also advocated for the commencement of the ICC Women’s Championship, and drove ICC’s first steps in promoting top level AM and women’s events through the broadcast of matches online.”Richardson noted that although Anderson was stepping away from a full-time role, he would be available for consultancy roles and special projects. As such, Anderson is being retained part-time to assist with ICC’s continued restructuring and development efforts in the USA following USACA’s suspension in June 2015.Anderson, 37, is a former Australia U-19 captain, having led the team at the 1998 U-19 World Cup, but thereafter quickly transitioned into a career in cricket administration. In 2000, he began working in the ICC’s East Asia-Pacific regional office in Melbourne as a development officer. He continued working his way up to take over as the ICC EAP regional manager before replacing Kennedy in the head office out of Dubai.

Smith's maiden T20 ton: bunts, punts and knock-out punches

Steven Smith interspersed an effective tap-and-run routine with creative big shots to direct Rising Pune Supergiants’ batting effort against Gujarat Lions

Arun Venugopal in Pune30-Apr-2016Steven Smith’s batting can look like a revved-up remix of a Michael Bevan special. Revisit a Smith innings and you will find that your brain hasn’t registered many breathtaking shots – all you may see are images on loop of his restless twitching at the crease, wristy bunts to the leg side and borderline-crazy running. But when you look up the scorecard, there’s a dandy 54-ball 101 staring you down in all its cold authority. How cool is that?Against Gujarat Lions, Smith only had to wait till the third over to unleash his coolness. When he joined Ajinkya Rahane, his fellow busy accumulator at Rajasthan Royals in the past, Rising Pune Supergiants were scoring at a below-par rate. It took Smith only two overs to crank it up. After flicking a first-ball four and loosening up with a few singles, he shot out of the crease to bash the medium pace of Praveen Kumar through the covers. Next ball, Praveen attempted to swing it in to catch him out on the shuffle, but couldn’t beat Smith’s late leg glance, which gave him four more.Smith broke his tap-and-run routine again in the next over by charging seamer Dhawal Kulkarni, who spotted the movement early and bowled a slower ball wide of off. But Smith waited and, with his back leg in the air, stretched out to give the ball a meaty thunk. Four more to the score. From 22 for 1 in four overs, Supergiants had reeled in 26 more in two overs to end the Powerplay at 48 for 1.Steven Smith on Pune’s bowling.

“I thought we were a bit disappointing with the way we bowled. I think we chopped and changed a little bit too much, rather than being nice and patient and hitting a good line and length, and making them go after the good balls. Any time you do that your chances of taking a wicket [increase] and if you take a wicket up top when you’re chasing 195, it makes things very difficult.”
On Supergiants’ two wins coming in away games
“Usually it’s the other way around isn’t it? In a tournament like this it doesn’t really matter where you play; it’s about going out there on any given day, giving it your all. It’s obviously about winning more to get yourself into that top four and, at the moment, we’re not doing that and we’ve got a lot of work to do.”

Rahane, meanwhile, was on 23 off 23 balls and might well have stagnated under pressure, or hit out rashly, had Smith not taken it upon himself to ensure the run flow remained fluent. Supergiants scored 37 in the next four overs, despite the field being spread and only three boundaries hit. There were only four dot balls in this period, as Smith pushed himself and Rahane to race through for singles and twos, mostly after cleverly placed dabs and nudges to the leg side – overall, 39 of Smith’s runs came in this fashion.Smith did enjoy a bit of good luck in the tenth over when debutant chinaman bowler Shivil Kaushik overstepped while forcing Smith to sweep one on to his stumps. Smith merrily carted the free-hit over long-off for six; the no-ball, he said, switched him to attack mode.”Probably around [that] point when I said to Rahane, ‘I will go [after the bowling] and you keep batting as you are doing,'” Smith said. “It was nice batting with Ajinkya. He is very quick between the wickets. That’s the kind of player I like to bat with. I like to hit the gaps and run ones and twos.”Lions’ captain Suresh Raina then engaged his death-over specialists – Dwayne Bravo and James Faulkner. Smith was Jackie Chan-esque in response, slipping in a boundary amid a sequence of singles like a punch following pokes to the eye. In the 13th over, he swivelled into a sweep-hoick to put away Faulkner’s slower one for six, before clipping the next ball – a low full toss – wide of long-on and bolting with two runs in mind. Under pressure to prevent the double, Ravindra Jadeja failed to gather the ball which hurried to the fence. While he shuffled around to the seamers, Smith remained still in the crease against slow men Jadeja and Kaushik, getting underneath their fuller deliveries to dispatch them for three straight sixes. All the while he never missed an opportunity to pinch a run, which explained why he finished with just 10 dots. Even when Rahane was about to be run out after backing up too far, Smith was ready for the overthrow in case Bravo missed the stumps. He and Rahane formed a dynamic pairing at long-off and long-on as well but, unfortunately for him, like Virat Kohli, his first T20 century coincided with a mediocre bowling effort from his team.

+ Veja a classificação final do Campeonato Brasileiro
