Rahat, Babar secure 304-run lead

For two days New Zealand’s bowlers had struggled to create chances as Pakistan amassed their match-defining total, but as soon as they batted, the balance between bat and ball shifted dramatically

For two days New Zealand’s bowlers had struggled to create chances as Pakistan amassed their match-defining total, but as soon as they batted, the balance between bat and ball shifted dramatically. The home side were a constant threat, and the New Zealand batsmen did not have the softness of technique to survive long periods in conditions that demanded patience. They conceded a first-innings lead of 304.Tom Latham was the exception, and the only reason New Zealand got as far as they did, making his maiden Test hundred. The rest of the top-order batsmen struggled against the relentless accuracy of Rahat Ali and the dangers created by Pakistan’s spinners operating with up to five catchers around the bat. Rahat was the pick, though, taking pivotal wickets to finish the day with figures of 17-10-22-4.Pakistan had six overs to bat before stumps and were without regular opener Ahmed Shehzad, who was ruled out of the series with a minor skull fracture. Mohammad Hafeez and Azhar Ali were unbeaten, and had no major scares, unlike New Zealand. The visitors had decided to open with Brendon McCullum and Latham, and they added 33 for the first wicket – New Zealand’s best first-wicket partnership for 12 innings. It was fraught with uncertainty, though. In the second over of the day, McCullum survived Imran Khan’s lbw appeal after the not-out decision was found to be umpire’s call on review. In the third, from Zulfiqar Babar, Latham played the ball firmly to short leg, where Azhar Ali could not catch it.Misbah-ul-Haq crowded the bat with catchers. There were usually four for Babar, sometimes more. McCullum fell to slip, as he pushed with hard hands and Younis Khan stooped to take a low catch. While Babar was the most threatening in the morning, he was supported by Rahat, who finished the first session with sensational figures of 8-7-1-1. Rahat’s wicket-to-wicket line and tight length made him impossible to score off for the cautious New Zealand batsmen – the only run he conceded was via a no-ball.In his fifth over Rahat dismissed New Zealand’s best batsman with a yorker. Kane Williamson jammed his bat down, but was too late in turning around to prevent the ball from trickling on to his stumps. Ross Taylor was returning from a calf injury but his comeback innings lasted only six balls before he edged Babar to gully. New Zealand were 47 for 3.Watching from the other end was Latham, who also had nervy moments. He shouldered arms to Rahat but survived the lbw appeal because it was marginally high, and towards the end of the first session an edge bounced off the wicketkeeper’s glove and fell wide of the diving fielder at slip. Latham attacked when he could, though, sweeping Babar for consecutive fours despite there being three close catchers on the leg side.New Zealand hobbled to 81 for 3 at lunch, but after the break Latham and Corey Anderson resumed aggressively. Anderson was harsh on the legspinner Yasir Shah, whose shorter lengths were swept and cut repeatedly to the boundary. He attacked Hafeez too, sweeping and lofting straight. The fifty partnership came in quick time.Misbah brought back Rahat to quiet the scoring and Anderson edged his first ball between slips and gully, and then swatted the next through midwicket. Those were the first runs Rahat had conceded off the bat all day. Soon after, though, Anderson attempted to force Rahat through the offside and played on to his stumps. His fellow allrounder Neesham followed quickly, stumped off Hafeez while attempting to heave down the ground. While the aggression of the allrounders did not look like it would last, Latham played with an assuredness that made longevity seem more likely. He was comfortable driving and pulling, and played the spinners late and with soft hands to reduce the threat of the prowling close catchers. When he swept, he planted his front foot well outside the line of off stump to eliminate the lbw.Latham resumed fluently after tea, pulling Imran to the midwicket boundary and then driving Babar down the ground to raise his first Test hundred. Misbah brought back his go-to man, and Rahat did the job with another yorker. Latham reviewed the lbw decision but replays upheld the decision, ending the sixth-wicket stand of 65 on 215.The innings seemed headed for a speedy finish when Mark Craig and Tim Southee fell in quick succession, but Ish Sodhi added 43 runs with Watling before being bowled by Yasir. Babar ended Watling’s innings with a superb set-up – he spun two balls sharply away from the right-hander before slipping in the arm-ball to nail him lbw on the sweep. Pakistan chose not to enforce the follow-on, and New Zealand could expect to be batting for survival not long into the fourth day.

Herói do tricampeonato paulista conquistado no primeiro semestre desta temporada, o atacante Vagner Love agora planeja conquistar a Copa Sul-Americana com o Corinthians.

Nicol leads Auckland romp

A round-up from the latest action in New Zealand’s Twenty20 competition as Auckland comfortably overcome Wellington

ESPNcricinfo staff21-Nov-2014

Rob Nicol helped make the target a comfortable ask•Associated Press

Rob Nicol led Auckland to a comfortable eight-wicket victory against Wellington after the home side had failed to capitalise on an excellent platform. Nicol struck an unbeaten 71 off 43 deliveries to hurry his team across the line with 19 deliveries to spare chasing a target of 168. Following the early loss of Luke Wright, who fell to fellow county player Luke Fletcher in the opening over, Nicol built a stand of 93 in nine overs for the second wicket with Anaru Kitchen (43) and then an unbroken 76 with Craig Cachopa.Earlier, having been put into bat, Wellington’s openers, Michael Pollard and Michael Papps, added 70 in seven overs but Pollard’s dismissal to Tarun Nethula – who bowled his four overs for 13 with a maiden – sucked the life out of the innings. Brad Hodge could only muster 1 off eight deliveries and although late striking by Matthew Taylor, who clubbed three sixes, injected some late life the total proved well short. The result lifted Auckland into third ahead of their opponents.

The Pakistan-New Zealand T20s may lack immediate context but will provide both team’s fringe players an opportunity to make a case for World Cup selection

Teams set for Twenty20 bout

Big pictureIt is a strange time to be playing an international Twenty20. Winning this series of two back-to-back matches will provide only a fleeting sense of satisfaction to the players, and will serve in no way towards any build-up to a larger T20 agenda – the next World T20 is in 2016. With the ODI World Cup looming, though, it provides an opportunity to tinker with combinations and give a chance to a fringe player or two.In all, nine players in the two squads have played in fewer than 15 limited-overs games for their national teams. For most of them, the T20s are perhaps their final chance to bring themselves into contention for the World Cup. Teams are unlikely to punt on untested talent at a World Cup, but if places do open up, it will help to have scored a blistering 70-odd in a reasonably recent T20 game. For Pakistan, the T20s also allow them to ease a set of senior players back into international cricket after breaks of varying lengths. Umar Gul last played for Pakistan during the World T20 in April, with a recurring knee injury keeping him out for long stretches. He has played plenty of domestic cricket since then, though, including a set of four-day games, and will be eager to remind everyone that he’s still around and still a top-class bowler. The same is true of Wahab Riaz, who is fit again after suffering a knee injury during the ODIs against Australia. Opener Ahmed Shehzad, meanwhile, will be playing for the first time since suffering a minor skull fracture during the first Test against New Zealand in Abu Dhabi.Kane Williamson will lead a New Zealand without regular captain Brendon McCullum, as well as new-ball regulars Tim Southee and Trent Boult, who are all resting to prepare for the upcoming series against Sri Lanka. Unlike Pakistan, who have named separate squads, the same set of players will play both the T20Is and ODIs for New Zealand, and therein lies the chance for someone like Anton Devcich or Adam Milne to leave a hard-to-forget impression.Form guide(last five completed games, most recent first)
Pakistan LLWWL
New Zealand LWLWLIn the spotlightAfter being dropped from the third ODI against Australia, Umar Akmal played no part in Pakistan’s resurgence in their Test series against Australia and New Zealand. Instead, he went back to domestic cricket, and struggled for runs, failing to score a single half-century in 11 first-class innings in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy. His form is a concern for Pakistan, and they will hope the sight of international opposition can spark him back to his fluent best.Since his last appearance for New Zealand in January, Adam Milne has been repeatedly sidelined by injury. Back in the squad now, he has hinted that he’s back to his furious best with the ball during New Zealand A’s tour of the UAE, running through the tail to finish with a five-for against Ireland on Monday.Team newsWith Sohaib Maqsood injured and Umar Amin dropped, Pakistan will have to make middle-order changes to the eleven that played the one-off T20 against Australia. Mohammmad Hafeez will probably take one of the two spots, and Sarfraz Ahmed should come into the side and take the keeping gloves off Umar Akmal.Pakistan (possible) 1 Ahmed Shehzad, 2 Awais Zia, 3 Mohammad Hafeez, 4 Saad Nasim, 5 Umar Akmal, 6 Sarfraz Ahmed (wk), 7 Shahid Afridi (capt), 8 Anwar Ali/Umar Gul, 9 Wahab Riaz, 10 Raza Hasan, 11 Mohammad IrfanThe last time New Zealand played a T20 game was during their tour of the West Indies, where they didn’t name a separate squad and simply made do with their Test players. It’s hard to tell what combination they are likely to go with in Dubai, therefore, and it will be interesting to see if they persist with James Neesham at the top of the order.New Zealand (possible) 1 Kane Williamson (capt), 2 James Neesham, 3 Martin Guptill, 4 Ross Taylor, 5 Corey Anderson, 6 Luke Ronchi (wk), 7 Daniel Vettori, 8 Nathan McCullum, 9 Kyle Mills, 10 Mitchell McClenaghan, 11 Adam MilneStats and trivia The top three wicket-takers in international T20 are all from Pakistan – Saeed Ajmal (85), Umar Gul (80) and Shahid Afridi (78). Nathan McCullum (52) is the only New Zealand bowler with more than 50 T20I wickets. Pakistan have only won one of their last seven matches at the Dubai International Stadium.Quotes”Any time you represent your country is an honour and a privilege, so there’s very much focus going into these T20 games [but] I suppose there is that World Cup in the back of everyone’s mind, and one-day cricket is a priority for most teams.”

Gabriel fica no Corinthians.

Gol do Colorado. Falha coletiva

Flawed teams face festive Test

Australia will regain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy with a win or draw at the MCG, where India have not won since 1981

The Preview by Daniel Brettig25-Dec-20146:42

Ponting: If there’s a game India will win, it’s this

Match factsDecember 26-30, 2014, Melbourne
Start time 1030 local (1130 GMT)Big pictureDepending on who you ask, Australia have so far been either slightly fortunate or exceptionally resourceful, and India either lacking in luck or deficient in perseverance. What this divergence of opinion says is that the current margin of 2-0 obscures greater complexities in the two sides and where they currently sit. The hosts have leaned heavily on their nascent captain Steven Smith and brazen opener David Warner, while Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Johnson have taken turns with the ball. Shane Watson and Brad Haddin have been doing much of the leaning, while Michael Clarke will be in Melbourne as a commentator rather than captain.India have shown promise, only to break it at critical times. Virat Kohli and M Vijay have been exceptional with the bat and Ajinkya Rahane, Shikhar Dhawan and Cheteshwar Pujara intermittently useful. But there have still been enough batting collapses to keep victory out of reach. Similarly, the bowlers have shown signs of unsettling Australia, but seldom have they done so with the new ball or against the tail. The looming inclusion of Bhuvneshwar Kumar may help add some solidity here. A fraying of Indian patience, evident through Brisbane fracas over practice pitches and food, must be scotched by MS Dhoni. The third character in the drama this week will be the MCG, its cavernous expanses and idiosyncratic pitch likely to offer chances to both sides and most disciplines. This was the venue where India came closest to unseating Australia in 2011-12 – they looked good for a vast first innings lead until Peter Siddle burst through Sachin Tendulkar’s attempted drive on the second evening. But it is 33 years since India won a Test at the MCG, and the Australian will to dominate the biggest day of their cricket calendar is invariably strong. All eyes on Shane Watson•Cricket Australia/Getty Images

Form guideAustralia WWLLW
India LLLLLIn the spotlightComing up to the 10th anniversary of his Test debut, Shane Watson returns to the MCG, his most productive ground by a distance. This is just as well, because Watson’s recent struggles and the emergence of Mitchell Marsh have made questions about his value more pertinent than ever. It is conceivable that a quiet match in Melbourne could see Watson tipped out of the Test team for Sydney, should Marsh be fit and Joe Burns make a productive start. So there will be plenty of eyes on Watson over the next five days.As Ricky Ponting has pointed out, MS Dhoni has a vexing task on his hands to stave off feelings of frustration and irritation among his tourists in unfamiliar parts of the world. He has of course become familiar with these issues on previous tours, but as India develops a team that might be capable of winning away from home sooner rather than later, attitude is all important. A more specific job Dhoni must undertake in Melbourne is to try to coax more runs from India’s tail. For all the feats of M Vijay and Virat Kohli thus far, a lack of lower order support has allowed Australia to keep ahead.Team newsAlongside the debutant Joe Burns, Ryan Harris is also set to return in place of Mitchell Starc. David Warner has shrugged off a badly bruised thumb and has also been spotted reviving his leg breaks in the nets. Shaun Marsh is also fine after a knock in training.Australia (probable) 1 Chris Rogers, 2 David Warner, 3 Shane Watson, 4 Steven Smith (capt), 5 Shaun Marsh, 6 Joe Burns, 7 Brad Haddin (wk), 8 Mitchell Johnson, 9 Ryan Harris, 10 Josh Hazlewood, 11 Nathan Lyon.Bhuvneshwar Kumar is fit again and KL Rahul and Suresh Raina are pushing hard, but India look likely to retain the attack.India (probable) 1 M Vijay, 2 Shikhar Dhawan, 3 Cheteshwar Pujara, 4 Virat Kohli, 5 Ajinkya Rahane, 6 Rohit Sharma, 7 MS Dhoni (capt,wk), 8 R Ashwin, 9 Bhuvneshwar Kumar/Varun Aaron, 10 Umesh Yadav, 11 Ishant Sharma.Pitch and conditionsMelbourne’s drop-in pitch will offer some early seam movement before drying out and likely offering assistance for reverse swing through its abrasive surface. Weather for the week is forecast to be moderate.Stats and trivia Joe Burns will be Australia’s fifth debutant in 2014, following Alex Doolan, Mitch Marsh, Steve O’Keefe and Josh Hazlewood. India’s last win against Australia at the MCG took place in February 1981. Defending a target of 143, Karsan Ghavri, Dilip Doshi and Kapil Dev razed Greg Chappell’s side for a mere 83. With 323 runs in two Tests, M Vijay is more than halfway to Rahul Dravid’s series aggregate record for an Indian batsman in Australia – 619 in the four Tests of 2003-04.Quotes”Four-nil would be nice, but you got to take each game as it comes.”

“What’s more important is to play good cricket and I feel we are doing that. But we are not crossing the line, which is vital in five days of Test cricket. We feel we are close, but at the same time it will have to reflect in our performance.”
