Clipping his first ball away for a majestic four, Trott immediately looked in good touch as the partnership quickly gathered momentum.Both players had reprieves though. On 12 Ambrose appeared to have nicked Ajmal Shahzad behind. Nottinghamshire celebrated collectively but the batsman remained rooted and umpire Neil Bainton awarded in his favour.Trott’s ‘life’ was more clear-cut. On 36 he clipped James Franklin to Samit Patel, in the short midwicket position but the chance went begging.Ambrose fell during the batting Powerplay, yorked by Fletcher but Trott advanced to his 17th one-day century shortly afterwards, arriving at the landmark from 115 balls with 10 fours.A catch at deep midwicket eventually accounted Trott and Fletcher grabbed his fourth wicket thanks to a smart piece of wicketkeeping as Chris Read stumped Rikki Clarke, standing up to the pace bowler.Michael Lumb lit up the start of Nottinghamshire’s reply, hitting a punishing 36 from just 21 balls before playing on to his stumps off Clarke. The same bowler then had Steven Mullaney caught behind, enabling Taylor to join Hales at the crease. Richard Jones replaced the opening bowlers and let a beamer slip towards Hales at the start of the 13th over, an over that eventually cost 16.Taylor hit Recordo Gordon into the Fox Road Stand for the first six of the evening just before Hales reached his 50 and the opener celebrated by hitting both Richard Jones and Ateeq Javid for maximums of his own.Hales purple patch of form took him to his third century of this season’s tournament and his fourth in all competitions in the last two weeks. An unlucky deflection from his back pad onto the stumps saw off the opener, gifting Gordon a fortunate wicket but it gave the visitors a massive way back into the contest.Taylor fell for 62 and Nottinghamshire then lost three further wickets in the batting Powerplay before the equation came down to 22 needed from the last two overs.Gordon thought he had bowled Shahzad but replays showed that a no ball had been delivered and the resultant decision was costly as 18 came from the penultimate over. Once Shahzad had been run out it was left to Fletcher to score the winning runs to take Nottinghamshire through.

Sempre fui defensor do VAR. Portugal foi o segundo país a aderir o VAR, depois da Holanda. Sou apologista do VAR, mas não do protocolo utilizado. Acho que os treinadores também precisam ser ouvidos. Mas isso não conta no momento. O VAR veio para transmitir a verdade do jogo.

The employment laws will be tested in an unexpected way this autumn when Peter Willey and George Sharp, two long-serving and respected umpires who face mandatory retirement at the end of this season, intend taking the ECB to a tribunal in an effort to prolong their careers beyond the age of 65.Both are keen to continue officiating in first-class cricket for a further season or two. If they win their case, there would appear to be nothing to prevent a fit individual with unimpaired eyesight carrying on beyond the age of 70.A change in the law in 2011 stipulated the abolition of a default retirement age. Reaching 65 could no longer be regarded as a ‘safe’ time to retire employees. Employers would have to show an objective justification for doing so then or on any fixed contractual date.Willey is regarded as one of the most no-nonsense umpires on the circuit and officiated in international matches between 1996 and 2003. A distinguished playing career with Northamptonshire, Leicestershire and England lasted until he was 41, proof in itself of longevity, and Willey takes the view that he and his colleagues are much fitter than their predecessors.He has been in the gym this week, in between matches and negotiations with the ECB which have been on-going all summer. “I would like to do a couple more years, but if it all ends next month, I will still have had a very happy time. Our legal people are looking into what we should do,” he said. The employment law states that “If an employer wishes to operate a compulsory retirement age after the default retirement age is abolished, they will need objectively to justify it.”The ECB, which has taken legal advice, justifies its policy of compulsory retirement by wishing to promote newly retired players seeking another career. “We want cricketers who give up playing in their mid-thirties to have the chance of umpiring as a second career. History shows that former players make good umpires so we need to provide some certainty as to when opportunities will arise,” a spokesman said.Willey, a former chairman of the umpires association, admitted there was a difference of opinion among the first-class umpires. “Our younger colleagues want us to go, so as not to block their progress, and the older ones are not quite sure. I would not want to go on for ever, for I did as a player. When I retired at 41, things were not working properly,” Willey said.Numerous umpires in the past would have wanted to continue in the game – for the lifestyle and involvement as much as improved remuneration. Ray Julian was one such official. He was forced to stand down in 2001 and continued to stand in matches that were not of first-class status. No doubt Dickie Bird, if he had his way, would still be officiating today.The last occasion on which an umpire took an employer to a tribunal – Darrell Hair and the ICC in 2007 – the hearing turned into a theatrical event presided over by two heavyweight lawyers who were altogether too sharp for a series of hapless administrators. Robert Griffiths QC, who represented Hair and who chairs MCC’s Laws committee, said: “I can see no reason why, if an umpire is capable of properly performing his duties, he should be required to stand down at 65. It seems to me the essential prerequisites of being a good umpire, as with a judge, are good judgement, vast experience and knowledge of the laws of cricket. “Willey himself does not wish to block the progress of younger individuals. “Young umpires do need experience of matches such as MCC v champion county, rather than us continuing to do these,” he admitted. If he does retire, he intends going fishing. “I’m not a great watcher of cricket matches,” he said.

Josh Hazlewood claimed another three wickets to take his tally to 10 from the first two games of the one-day season as New South Wales toppled the reigning champions Queensland in Brisbane. Hazlewood, Moises Henriques and Gurinder Sandhu each picked up three victims as the Bulls were bowled out for 190 at Allan Border Field, and New South Wales chased down the target with four wickets in hand.Having destroyed Victoria in the opening match of the campaign, Queensland entered this game with confidence and chose to bat, but after reaching 1 for 70 they suffered a mini-collapse of 4 for 14. The Bulls never quite recovered from that as the seamers continued to chip away, and Nathan Reardon (45), Usman Khawaja (43) and James Hopes (39) made the only contributions of note.Hazlewood finished the innings by bowling Luke Feldman in the 43rd over and it gave him 3 for 47 to add to his 7 for 36 from Saturday’s match against South Australia. – A gente tem tido muita paciência com o Pato, ele estava em um outro centro (na China), demora um pouquinho mais para se adaptar. Nesse jogo ele foi mais competitivo, ele tem se doado bastante, treinado bastante. Quando ele sai, é por opção minha, mais na parte tática do que técnica, a técnica dele é indiscutível. Tenho aproveitado da melhor forma. Era para ele jogar o tempo todo, infelizmente cansou no fim e pediu para sair, mas fez um grande trabalho – elogiou Cuca.

Jogador e técnico têm tentado se adaptar um ao outro.Em alguns jogos, Pato ficou incumbido de marcar o lateral-direito adversário e o fez sem reclamar, mesmo que para isso tenha ficado mais longe do gol. Contra o Santos, Cuca decidiu que não daria essa missão a ele. A ideia, inclusive, era que começasse a partida jogando como atacante ao lado de Raniel, o que daria a Everton a função de ocupar a ponta esquerda e ajudar defensivamente. Quando viu que o lateral adversário seria o zagueiro Lucas Veríssimo, o técnico decidiu manter Pato aberto pelo lado esquerdo, posição em que ele se sente mais confortável. Sua missão defensiva era cercar a saída de bola do adversário, algo que fez muito bem.

– Treinei no 4-4-2, abrindo Everton pela esquerda, Toró na direita, com Pato e Raniel de atacantes. Eles com linha de três zagueiros, íamos com dois atacantes. Se for buscar o jogo deles com o Palmeiras no Pacaembu, o Lucas Veríssimo já jogou de lateral, era linha de quatro e dessa vez foi de novo. Quando vi, abri o Pato na ponta, porque aí ele não vai ter o desgaste para voltar, é diferente de pegar um lateral como o Gilberto, do Fluminense, que é um ala. Mudou, sim, porque tínhamos treinado duas ou três formas de jogar – explicou o treinador.

Por coincidência ou não, essa foi a partida em que Pato mais finalizou nessa volta ao São Paulo: quatro vezes, assim como no empate sem gols com o Avaí, quando jogou como centroavante. A diferença é que três das finalizações dele no clássico tiveram a direção do gol. Na Ressacada, nenhuma.

– Eu tenho feito meu melhor para o time, jogo coletivamente. Na minha volta para cá, estou tentando ajudar naquilo que posso fazer. Se o professor pede para marcar, eu vou marcar. Na hora que aparecer as oportunidades de gol, eu vou fazer. Fico feliz pelo resultado, pelos gols que fiz, mas o coletivo é muito mais forte que o individual – disse Pato.
