Brad Hodge is concerned that young players will stop focusing on Test cricket as their ultimate goal as Cricket Australia’s pushes its resources into the Big Bash League. Hodge is retired from first-class cricket and will play with the Melbourne Renegades in the new eight-team competition, but one of his career highlights was playing six Tests for Australia. Now, with greater opportunities for fringe players to break into domestic cricket in Twenty20 rather than the longer format, and with bigger pay cheques on offer, Hodge is worried that the lines might be blurring for younger players seeking to make it.”My whole life was founded on trying to play cricket for Australia at Test level and I wish the mental side of the younger player was the same, but I’m just not sure it is,” Hodge told the . “Most of the talk around here is about this Twenty20 competition … no one gives a toss about the other two forms of the game at the moment.”It’s hard for me to think about what a young player would want, but the few I have spoken to, what they want is to play IPL, to play Twenty20, and Test cricket is probably not right up there.”Hodge, 36, chose the Docklands-based Renegades over the Melbourne Stars in part because of the team’s pulling power with a pace duo of Shaun Tait and Dirk Nannes. However, he said splitting the city into two teams, while retaining the traditional Victoria side in the Sheffield Shield and one-day competition, could be dangerous.”There is a risk to state cricket … the Bushrangers brand is very fragile. I just can’t see how it’s going to compete against the Stars and the Renegades for market share,” Hodge said. “Shield cricket and one-day cricket are just going to fall off the perch, unfortunately.”The reality is that people want to play Twenty20 and the public want Twenty20 and I’m not sure people are going to be interested in watching Test match cricket or one-day cricket … as much as the administration say they are going to protect [Shield cricket], I think it’s going to fall away and become obsolete.”However, the Victoria coach Greg Shipperd does not share Hodge’s pessimistic views on the future of Sheffield Shield cricket. Shipperd told ESPNcricinfo earlier this month that he believed Twenty20 cricket, far from taking players away from the longer format, would help them develop their game.”I don’t see any players that are really just interested in that form,” Shipperd said of T20. “The ones who have found their way through one-day cricket and T20 cricket into the system are just as hungry to improve their skills and play as many days of cricket as they can. We still see a great appetite for learning the skills in the longer form of the game. By being exposed to these pressure situations in the shorter form of the game, and the need for variety, it actually adds to their skill set.”Shipperd’s theory has been backed up by the development of the batsman David Warner, who played T20 cricket for Australia before he had even made his first-class debut. But despite originally being pigeon-holed as a short-form slogger, Warner has developed his longer game and was player of the series in Australia A’s recent first-class games in Zimbabwe, where he made a career-best 211.”My main focus was to try and score runs in the four-day stuff and it happened,” Warner told AAP. “[Test cricket] is my goal and hopefully one day I think I can achieve that. My aspirations are to get the baggy green and at the moment I’m going the right way about it.”

Indians ease to first win of tough tour

Forty-five days into this most arduous of tours, the Indians secured their maiden victory

Forty-five days into this most arduous of tours, the Indians secured their maiden victory. Half-centuries from Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Parthiv Patel and a four-wicket haul from RP Singh helped them to a six-wicket win over a Sussex side missing several of its senior players. Rain breaks revised the target to 235, and the Indians won with 4.1 overs to spare. The win will be a relief to MS Dhoni and Duncan Fletcher, who had run out of reasons trying to explain India’s sudden slump to a demanding media. Today, they were helped by the infusion of some freshness in the squad – the likes of Kohli, Parthiv and Rohit, who weren’t at the receiving end of England’s ruthless domination in the Tests.Dhoni rushed midway through the warm-up routine in the morning for the toss and showed no hesitation asking Sussex to bat under cloudy conditions. By the time the openers, Sachin Tendulkar and Parthiv, walked in to bat for the chase, the County ground was bathed in sunshine. And the pitch was flat.Tendulkar didn’t face the local tearaway Amjad Khan during his stay at all. Instead, he happily dealt with the left-armer Naved Arif who faltered in his lines. Trying for pace Arif pitched short and angled wide off the off stump but Tendulkar instantly upper cut him for four. His best shot came in Arif’s third over, when he played a powerful drive that sliced through a thick off-side field manned by a gully, point, cover, silly mid-off and mid-off. Unfortunately, after having flicked Chris Liddle, who replaced Arif, for another four, Tendulkar tried to clear mid-off but failed and was caught.By then, Parthiv, who was overwhelmed by Amjad’s pace and movement in the early overs – he was forced to replace a broken bat as he tried to dig out a yorker – had gradually started to find his rhythm against the medium-pace duo of Liddle and Kirk Wernars. He played well on both sides against the slower pace and cut Wernars to the point boundary. He reached his half-century with a pull that got him a single, but mis-read the length and spin of Chris Nash’s first delivery, his off bail displaced. If Gautam Gambhir, who did some light jogging with a strained face during the lunch break, fails to take field during the ODI series, Parthiv is a contender and would want to show a more settled technique in tomorrow’s match against Kent.If anybody showed assurance, it was the pair of Kohli and Rohit. Both played with a straight bat and without any fuss. They reached their teens by running hard singles and then cleared the boundaries with ease as Sussex tried to lure them by using spinners at both ends. Virat looked solid in defence, and when he was offered width by Liddle he pulled him hard for an easy four, his first. He repeated the same stroke with an identical result when Liddle repeated the mistake.Rohit cut one hard between gully and point for his first four against Will Beer, who posed no hurdles for the Indians. When Nash challenged him with flight, he took the offer and cleared the long-off boundary, his team’s first six.In their effort to post a competitive target, the Sussex middle order regrouped after the top order faltered in the morning when play was interrupted by rain on a couple of occasions. The lights came on immediately after the first over as Brighton woke up under a huge blanket of dark cloud and intermittent drizzle. The first stoppage occured after 2.1 overs and play was interrupted again four overs later by a thin drizzle.Luke Wells walked off early, edging to Dhoni off Praveen Kumar. Lou Vincent, the former New Zealand batsman, hit a muscular six, the first of the day, over deep square leg but then played casually against RP’s angled delivery, giving Dhoni his second catch. On resumption, Chris Nash, the Sussex captain, took a fancy to Munaf Patel, hitting couple of straight fours, but seemed desperate to charge every ball and paid the price when he cut RP straight to Kohli at point. After 12 overs Sussex were 58 for 3, but Joe Gatting ensured the hosts didn’t lose the plot so easily. He opened his account with a neat, square-driven four off RP. He then took advantage of the short straight boundaries by lofting Munaf, who had an ordinary day, over mid-off for a one-bounce four. Gatting followed up, slogging Munaf over the deep square leg; the ball bounced off the roof of the marquee tent into the first story of the neighbouring apartment building. The introduction of R Ashwin, though, immediately put doubts in Gatting’s mind as he tried to sweep the offspinner against the spin and was bowled. It was the turn of Matt Machan to take over from Gatting and he played resolutely in the middle overs. His 65-run stand with Ben Brown lent respectability to the Sussex score. Machan was the top-scorer with 56 and Brown was unlucky to miss his own fifty by two runs. But the partnership didn’t hurt the Indians, who enjoyed the better of the battle, as the Sussex batsmen increasingly found it hard to play boldly and take chances.

Hughes hundred hurts Sri Lanka's hopes

Phillip Hughes scored his first Test century in two-and-a -half years to give Australia every chance of playing out a series-winning draw at the SSC

The Report by Brydon Coverdale19-Sep-2011
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsPhillip Hughes scored his first Test century since March 2009•AFP

Smart stats

Phillip Hughes’ century is his first since his twin centuries in the second Test against South Africa in Durban in 2009. In between, he made only one half-century in ten Tests.

Hughes also achieved the feat of scoring a century and a duck in the same match. Michael Hussey was the previous Australia player to do so against England at The Oval in 2009.

Angelo Mathews’ 105 is his first century in Tests and his third fifty-plus knock of the series. He has so far scored 274 runs in this series at an average of 91.33.

Mathews’ century is the eighth by a Sri Lanka batsman in home Tests against Australia. Five of them have been scored at the SSC.

In Tests since 1990, there have been 76 centuries scored at the SSC in 33 Tests. Only Lord’s has witnessed more centuries (84 in 39 matches).

Sri Lanka’s lead of 157 at the end of their first innings is the third-highest for them in Tests against Australia.

This is the third occasion when there have been three fifty-plus partnerships for the first three wickets for Australia in Tests against Sri Lanka. The previous two occasions were in Hobart in 2007 and Galle in 2004.

Phillip Hughes scored his first Test century in two-and- a-half years to give Australia every chance of playing out a series-winning draw at the SSC. But at the end of a day that began with a Sri Lankan crawl as Angelo Mathews ate up valuable time in reaching his maiden Test hundred, Rangana Herath had troubled Australia’s top order enough to give Sri Lanka some hope of victory.Sri Lanka must win the match to level the series, and their fate hinges on whether they can run through Australia’s middle order early on the final day. At stumps on the fourth afternoon, Australia were 52 runs in front, with seven wickets in hand, and they had a well-set Hughes still at the crease on 122 alongside the captain Michael Clarke on 8.If time does beat Sri Lanka, they will regret their slow march on the fourth morning, when they added 45 runs to their overnight total but took more than an hour and a half to do so. By tea, Australia had all but knocked off the 157-run first-innings deficit and they were in no hurry during the final session, happy to bat as much time out of the match as possible. Not that Hughes had been slow. He brought up his century from his 141st delivery with a push through the off side for two, and his celebration was noticeably muted: there was a small fist pump and raise of the bat but none of the helmet-kissing that has marked Australian milestones in recent years. He knew that the selectors had shown great faith in him by dropping Simon Katich.Hughes hadn’t passed fifty in any of his past ten Test innings, and not since his twin hundreds in Durban in March 2009 had he reached triple figures for his country. He took 22 balls to get through the nineties, which included a nervous moment on 99 when he survived an lbw review after getting in a tangle trying to dab behind gully; the ball had hit the flap of his pad before bat, but outside the line.Earlier, Hughes had been in fine form, and his driving through cover whenever the seamers overpitched was especially strong. He also cleared the midwicket boundary with a slog off Herath and brought up his fifty with another slog-sweep, this time off Tillakaratne Dilshan, from his 67th delivery. Importantly, he had support all the way.His partnerships with Shane Watson, Shaun Marsh and Ricky Ponting were all worth sixty-something. Herath worked hard to remove all three batsmen, the dismissal of Ponting for 28 late in the day a key blow when the ball turned sharply and kissed the batsman’s gloves on the way through to Mahela Jayawardene at slip.Herath had earned the wicket of Watson (21) with a delivery that went straight on, and despite a huge stride forward, Watson was lbw on review after being given not out by the on-field umpire. That review worked for Sri Lanka; another one would have worked against them, if only Marsh had thought to request one when he was out for 18.It was a strange dismissal, as Marsh was given out caught at bat-pad, but replays showed Herath’s delivery had turned so much that it missed the bat and gloves by a significant margin. However, perhaps forgetting the DRS was available or maybe just convinced he had made contact, Marsh failed to ask for the review that would have saved him.But that was hardly the most baffling part of the day’s play. The real mystery was why Sri Lanka batted so slowly during the morning, when what they really needed was quick runs to give themselves adequate time to bowl Australia out and then complete a chase if necessary. Instead, the focus seemed to be solely on Mathews making his hundred, no matter how long it took.He did get there, and remained unbeaten on 105 after he lost three of his final four partners while en-route to triple figures. Australia were happy to consume valuable minutes by setting the field back, knowing Mathews would not take singles early in an over to expose the No.11 Suranga Lakmal, and the path to his century was long and drawn out.Eventually, he got there from his 256th delivery with a drive through cover for four off Peter Siddle, and it was a relief for a man who had twice been out in the nineties. The final wicket fell when Lakmal was bowled by Mitchell Johnson for 13, after Siddle picked up the early breakthroughs.Siddle started the day by bowling Shaminda Eranga for 12 with a fullish ball that caught the inside edge and cannoned on to the leg stump, and he followed up by trapping Herath lbw for 3. Herath had the decision reviewed but to no avail, and a few overs later Chanaka Welegedara was run out in a major mix-up with Mathews.Welegedara pushed to mid-on and took off for a single but ended up at the bowler’s end alongside his partner Mathews, and the ball was relayed to Brad Haddin who whipped the bails off at the other end. It typified a morning when Sri Lanka were simply not on the ball. But by the end of the day, Herath’s strikes had at least given them some chance of victory. If they start the fifth morning as they did the fourth, that hope will quickly disappear.

Messi?

Mutizwa, Mpofu shine in wins

A round-up from the first round of games in Zimbabwe’s Logan Cup

ESPNcricinfo staff29-Sep-2011Matabeleland Tuskers laid down an early marker with a 106-run win over Mountaineers at Mutare Sports Club in their first Logan Cup match of the new season. On a pitch that became harder to bat on as the game wore on, Tuskers’ seamers – led by Man of the Match Chris Mpofu – ensured that the hard work of their batsmen in the first innings did not go to waste, bowling Mountaineers out for just 92 on the fourth day.Tuskers captain Gavin Ewing chose to bat on the first morning and after an early wobble against the new ball it was Ewing himself who helped shore up the innings, sharing partnerships of 133 and 60 for the third and fourth wickets with Craig Ervine (59) and Keith Dabengwa (67 not out). Ewing went on to reach a century – the first of the season – while Mountaineers legspinner Natsai Mushangwe picked up five wickets as Tuskers reached 306.Hamilton Masakadza’s 75 and contributions from former Zimbabwe Under-19 players Kevin Kasuza (46) and Benjamin Katsande (45) propped Mountaineers up but Chris Mpofu’s five-for ensured a 12-run lead for Tuskers. The visiting batsmen struggled the second time round and Tuskers were thankful for Keegan Meth’s unbeaten 41, which helped set a target of 199 for Mountaineers. Their chase never got close, however, Mpofu picking up a further four wickets and Meth finishing the remarkable figures of 3 for 19 in 14 overs as Mountaineers were bundled out for 92.At Masvingo, Forster Mutizwa’s unbeaten century carried Mashonaland Eagles to a remarkable three-wicket win over Southern Rocks. Mark Mbofana’s career-best 5 for 41 in Southern Rocks first innings appeared to have gone to waste when Eagles were bowled out for just 147, conceding a lead of 119.That was extended to 338 despite a robust second-innings effort from the Eagles attack, and when they were reduced to 3 for 2 by Tinashe Panyangara in their chase, all seemed lost. Mutizwa then sparked a remarkable turnaround, however, sharing in a partnership of 124 with Elton Chigumbura, who hit a patient 53. An 80-run stand for the fifth wicket with Trevor Garwe tilted the balance, before Nathan Waller’s swashbuckling 53 – from just 34 deliveries – helped seal the match.
