Torrential rain and a crucial ninth-wicket stand between Jim Allenby and Dean Cosker stalled Surrey’s progress on day three of the County Championship encounter with Glamorgan at the Brit Oval.Glamorgan had just scraped past the follow-on target of 231 when the heavens opened shortly before 2pm, and although the ground was bathed in sunshine after the rain relented, it was not possible resume until 5pm.When play did get under way again Allenby (65*) brought up his fifty in 80 deliveries and, in alliance with Huw Waters (16*), safely negotiated the remaining twenty overs, trimming Surrey’s lead to 107 as Glamorgan closed on 273 for 9.That Surrey even entertained the prospect of enforcing the follow-on prior to the rain delay was due to a superb exhibition of seam bowling from Stuart Meaker, who ended the day with 5 for 97, and Chris Tremlett, who chipped in with 3 for 53.Tremlett picked up the wicket of Ben Wright with his first delivery, caught at third slip. Seven overs later, Meaker accounted for Jamie Dalrymple, who provided Gareth Batty with the first of three catches. But thanks to a belligerent 33-run ninth-wicket alliance between Allenby and Cosker, Surrey’s hopes of sticking the visitors in again were thwarted.The follow-on was averted when, in the 60th over, Cosker stole a quick single off Meaker. Cosker departed in the very next over, but having achieved his team’s objective.

Vice-captain, loyal servant and arguably a club legend, Leeds United defender Luke Ayling is something of a hero around Elland Road.

But having amassed 217 appearances and secured a Championship winners medal during his time at the west Yorkshire outfit, it could be time to move on.

There’s no denying that this season has been appalling – stopping just short of disastrous – as it appears as if new manager Jesse Marsch has steered the Whites to safety, having been involved in the relegation dogfight for the past few months.

A four-game unbeaten run, which includes wins over basement boys Norwich City and relegation rivals Watford, has seen Leeds move nine points clear of Burnley with six matches left to play.

They may have just done it.

However, the team is still the leakiest defence in the Premier League, having conceded a whopping 68 goals from their 32 outings – an average of 2.1 goals let in per game.

And when you’re having to score three goals every week to stand a chance at winning – without last season’s top goalscorer Patrick Bamford too – then it’s no wonder the Yorkshiremen have found themselves in a precarious position at times.

It’s a backline that has largely been unaltered since promotion from the second flight and there have to be question marks over whether big players like Ayling can consistently cut the mustard at this level.

Marsch ought to be ruthless this off-season by trying to secure a better option and that’s not through any fault of his own but Ayling has looked out of his depth at times.

During the recent win over the Hornets, commentator and former Wales international David Phillips described the 30-year-old’s defending as “awful”, whilst his seasonal 6.56 average WhoScored rating is bettered by eight other Leeds players right now.

No one is dribbled past more than Ayling either, letting his man run by 1.6 times per game and when you’re coming up against some of the best left-wingers in the division – ranging from Heung-min Son to Sadio Mane and Raheem Sterling – it’s going to cause plenty of trouble for his defensive counterparts.

Former manager Marcelo Bielsa was a big admirer of the full-back, especially as he could often slot in at centre-half for him. He even once waxed lyrical about his talents in this regard. He told reporters:

“He was quick, he was agile, he defended well, he headed well, he used the ball well, he transmitted serenity to the rest of the team.”

Just because he has been at the club for the best part of six years, doesn’t mean Marsch owes him anything. If a better option can be secured, then he must look to axe the Leeds favourite for the benefit of him becoming a successful manager at Elland Road.

The £35k-per-week ace just isn’t good enough for the big time, at least in a team that shouldn’t be fighting to keep their place in the division. A ruthless decision, but the right one.

The rest of the Middlesex innings was a procession with five batsmen failing to register double figures as the Derbyshire bowlers preyed on poor shot selection.Three wickets fell with the total on 245 and Collins’ wild carve to third man to bring the innings to a close summed up what had been a lamentable display by the visitors. Derbyshire fared no better despite Chris Rogers making 75, his highest Championship score since early June, and they were two wickets down by lunch with Collins bowling Chesney Hughes with the penultimate ball of the session.The home side lost their last six wickets for 60 runs with at least four batsmen contributing to their downfall as the game advanced rapidly despite the loss of four sessions to rain. Derbyshire’s hopes of getting close to Middlesex’s total disappeared when Rogers was bowled by Udal for 75 and only some lusty blows from Steffan Jones, who hit the veteran spinner for two sixes in an over, gave them a measure of respectability.Udal had the last word when Jones was stumped giving him the charge but Middlesex were soon back in familiar territory as Tim Groenewald and Graham Wagg trapped both openers lbw in the first eight overs of their second innings.Owais Shah and Dawid Malan brought up the fifty before Footitt tempted them into rash strokes to leave both teams with a chance of winning a game that had looked destined for a draw after the loss of so much time to bad weather.

In terms of injuries, Rangnick has confirmed there will be five players unavailable for selection in his pre-match press conference, with the 63-year-old stating: “Five players will still be missing for tomorrow, some of them probably also for the upcoming games.

“Fred, Scott [McTominay] and Raphael Varane will still be missing out, Luke Shaw had his bolts removed from his leg and Edinson Cavani – those are the five that will still be missing.”

Cristiano Ronaldo was also thought to be a doubt after sustaining a large wound at Goodison Park last week, however, Rangnick has now confirmed that he is fit and available for selection.

The £49.5m-rated ace who was dubbed “stupid” by Gary Neville is entering into the last few weeks of his contract at Old Trafford, so it will be interesting which version of the Frenchman will turn up against Norwich.

And, if he is playing for a lucrative move away from Manchester, he will certainly be hoping to put on a show if he is indeed given the opportunity from the off in the middle of the park.

The other change we expect to see is Diogo Dalot replacing Aaron Wan-Bissaka at right-back, alongside Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Alex Telles in the back four.

The 24-year-old who was labelled “reckless” by Jamie Carragher has been part of the losing team in his last two appearances in the Premier League, so Rangnick may freshen up the back-line by giving Dalot the opportunity to make an impact today.

Manchester United have an advantage of playing in front of their home fans today and should have enough quality to beat their opponents – who have only won five top-flight fixtures all season – however, if the Canaries can secure a result away from home, it would be an absolute disaster for the Red Devils’ Champions League hopes.
