Ange Postecoglou has dropped a huge hint on the future of Celtic goalkeeper Vasilis Barkas.

What’s the latest?

According to a report by Football Scotland, the 56-year-old Bhoys boss has included the 27-year-old shot-stopper in his 25-man Europa Conference League squad for the Hoops’ upcoming fixture against FK Bodo/Glimt later this month.

This would appear to all but end the speculation surrounding the Greece international’s potential exit from the club in the coming weeks, with reports suggesting that IFK Goteborg – who have been heavily linked with a move for the ‘keeper – have now turned their attention elsewhere.

Fans will be fuming

Considering just how poor Barkas has been since his €5m (£4.5m) move to Parkhead back in the summer of 2020, the news that the £20k-per-week goalkeeper looks set to remain on Celtic’s books until at least the end of the season is sure to have left the Bhoys fanbase fuming.

Indeed, in a poll ran by Football FanCast, the vast majority of Celtic supporters made it extremely clear that they would not be sad to see the £1.35m-rated stopper leave their club, while a further poll revealed that Hoops fans would even be happy for the 27-year-old to leave on a free transfer.

It is not difficult to understand why the Celtic support feel this way, as Barkas has offered his side very little since joining a little over a year and a half ago.

Indeed, over his 15 Premiership appearances last season, the Greek ‘keeper made it extremely hard to believe that the Bhoys scouting department had identified Barkas as their new first choice in the position, with the shot-stopper making an average of just one save and conceding an average of 0.7 goals per game.

These returns saw the former AEK Athens man earn an incredibly disappointing seasonal SofaScore rating of just 6.79, ranking him as the Hoops’ joint ninth-worst player in the top flight of Scottish football.

As such, when adding in the fact that the player who Tam McManus dubbed “horrendous” has so far featured just twice under the management of Postecoglou, the news that the goalkeeper looks set to carry on picking up his £20k weekly paycheque at Parkhead is something that will infuriate Celtic fans.

Zimbabwe came out all bats blazing, but charred themselves as well, losing too many wickets early, and let spinners dominate proceedings after that. India stuttered in the chase, getting reduced to 48 for 4, but Yusuf Pathan and Virat Kohli carried them home.Zimbabwe were 41 for 2 after four overs when spin was introduced, but Pragyan Ojha, R Ashwin and Piyush Chawla did to Zimbabwe what their spinners were used to doing to others. That the slow bowlers went for 57 in 14 overs among them, and that there was a spell of 59 deliveries without a boundary, underlined Zimbabwe’s trouble. Ojha also registered the most economical Twenty20 figures for India.Chamu Chibhabha, who had a career strike-rate of 80.64 before today, surprised India with four fours and a six off the first 18 balls he played, but the spinners reined him and his team-mates in – the high point for the slow bowlers was the Chawla googly which dismissed Chibhabha in the 11th over.Zimbabwe made a hectic start with Chibhabha and Brendan Taylor getting stuck into the medium-pacers despite the loss of Hamilton Masakadza in the first over. O Corinthians inicia o Campeonato Paulista 2018 de maneira parecida com o do ano passado, do qual sagrou-se campeão. Há, no entanto, diferenças consideráveis entre as competições: a Libertadores como prioridade e a pressão, que certamente será maior este ano por conta dos dois títulos do ano passado. Carille e cia. desta vez serão telhado e poderão reforçar que 2017 não foi culpa do acaso. Some aí a ausência de Jô, principal jogador do Brasil no ano passado, e teremos três grandes mudanças.

Sem contar o calendário, mas este serve para todos. E o Corinthians pode ter saído na frente dos rivais. Apesar das baixas de Pablo, Guilherme Arana e Jô, o Timão manteve uma base do time e iniciou o ano apertado ciente do que quer. Desde o segundo dia de treinamento da pré-temporada, Carille já trabalha com a maioria das peças e o sistema tático que quer para 2018: 4-1-4-1. A escalação deve ter uma ou outra mudança, dada a chegada do zagueiro Henrique para o lugar de Pablo e a busca de um centroavante, mas a base já foi cravada.

Tal aspecto não pode ser ignorado, sobretudo pelo bom trabalho desenvolvido pela comissão técnica e atestado durante toda a temporada passada. Como Carille gosta de dizer, o Corinthians pode não dá espetáculo, mas será competitivo.

O técnico também deve usar a competição para observar melhor os garotos. Com o novo regulamento que permite a inscrição de jovens sem estourar o limite, é provável que nomes como Mantuan, Warian e Pedrinho apareçam com mais frequência na escalação. Nesse momento, o Corinthians espera ter uma gordura para suportar a entrada de garotos e pode usar o início do campeonato para construí-la. Afinal, dos dez primeiros jogos na competição, nove serão em São Paulo, os quatro primeiros como mandante. O fato de não ter de viajar ajuda a combater o desgaste físico de uma no extremamente apertado.

The Verdict: Would be a huge blow for Conte

Looking at the situation positively, neither Kane nor Conte were questioned about the back issue after the match. This could suggest that the striker was fine and that he will be available for the Lilywhites’ trip to Turf Moor on Wednesday night to take on Sean Dyche’s Burnley.

However, it could also suggest that the injury is more serious than first thought. As the pain was clearly bothering the England captain hours after the match, this could prove to be a big issue for Conte, as the Italian has no other senior centre-forward to call upon.

Fans will be hoping that it is just a minor knock and that their star striker, whose form has improved in recent weeks following a slow start to the campaign, will be back in action at Burnley as Spurs chase West Ham, Arsenal, Wolves and Man United in their pursuit of European football.
