West Bromwich Albion are interested in a deal to bring Vedat Muriqi to The Hawthorns in the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Italian publication Corriere della Sera (via Sport Witness), who claim that Valerien Ismael’s side are not relenting in their interest to secure a deal for the Lazio centre-forward in the current transfer market, despite the fact the club secured the £7m signing of Daryl Dike earlier this month.

The report goes on to state that CSKA Moscow are also keeping a close eye on the situation of the 27-year-old, while the Serie A side are thought to be willing to sanction the departure of the Kosovo international on a temporary basis – as long as the deal includes an obligation to buy clause.

“Absolute donkey”

While it is true that Muriqi did return impressive numbers during his time in Turkey – scoring 17 goals over 36 appearances for Fenerbahce, bagging 25 goals over 52 outings for Caykur Rizespor and netting 23 times in 69 fixtures for Giresunspor – following his £17.93m move to Lazio back in the summer of 2020, the centre-forward has been a particularly big flop for the Italian side.

Indeed, over his 27 Serie A appearances for I Biancocelesti last season, the £5.4m-rated man scored just one goal, registered no assists and missed four big chances for his side, as well as hitting the target with an average of a mere 0.3 shots per game.

These returns saw the £52k-per-week striker earn an extremely disappointing seasonal SofaScore rating of just 6.69, ranking him as Lazio’s 12th-worst performer in the top flight of Italian football.

Things have not improved over the Kosovan’s 11 league outings in the current campaign, with Muriqi failing to hit the back or providing a single assist for his teammates, as well as missing two big chances.

These metrics have seen the 27-year-old average an even more disappointing SofaScore match rating of 6.52, ranking him as Maurizio Sarri’s fourth-worst player in the division this time around.

As such, it is perhaps easy to understand why Vincenzo Morabito suggested that Lazio had been duped into spending so much on the centre-forward, with the Italian football agent stating of Muriqi: “He has this brother who is the Albanian Consul in Istanbul and suddenly [Lazio] pay €18m for a player who is an absolute donkey.

“Simone [Inzaghi] told me, ‘I’m pulling my hair out, here.’ Stefan Radu tells me he can mark Muriqi with slippers on in training because he’s so bad. €18m for Muriqi, and then there are five agents involved with all the commissions. I mean, €18m is a lot of money for Lazio and they get this horrible flop.”

Indeed, there would appear to be worrying similarities between the potential signing of the Kosovan this month and the £15m deal to bring Oli Burke to The Hawthorns back in 2017 – with the Scotland international going on to score just one goal over his 24 appearances for the Baggies before being sold for a near-£10m loss to Sheffield United in 2020.

As such, considering Albion have already brought Dike to the club this winter, in addition to the fact that, should the Baggies go on to secure promotion to the top flight this season, Muriqi would not appear to be a striker who is anywhere near the standard required for the English top-flight, Ismael must avoid a move for the Kosovan this month – as his signing could well prove to be a repeat of the Burke disaster.

Tanguy Ndombele’s future at Tottenham Hotspur is by no means certain.

The 25-year-old midfielder, who cost a club-record £55m two-and-a-half years ago, has not featured for the club since being withdrawn early during their FA Cup third-round victory over Morecambe.

He slowly trudged off to a chorus of boos and jeers with his side down by a goal at the time. Since then, it has emerged that the club are trying to move him on and that he has reportedly been training alone at Hotspur Way.

“Tottenham are looking for a solution to sell or loan out Tanguy Ndombele in January,” revealed Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

It’s hard to put up a case for Spurs keeping hold of their big-money signing as he’s been nothing short of a flop – as per Transfermarkt, he has delivered only ten goals and nine assists across 91 appearances.

If they are to move him on, however, manager Antonio Conte will be in need of a new central midfielder but perhaps he already has the answer at the club, somewhat.

Sarr solution?

During the summer, sporting director Fabio Paratici sealed the signature of promising Ligue 1 gem Pape Matar Sarr, who has remained on loan at Metz, for around €17m (£15m).

The 19-year-old midfielder has played in pretty much every role in the engine room for the French outfit this season, where he has made 19 appearances across all competitions.

Now valued at £18m by Transfermarkt, the Senegal international has struggled for consistency, averaging a rating of just 6.43, though there have been signs of encouragement and he is a player with undoubted potential.

“I am told this guy is really more than an interesting talent. He has real potential, [he’s a] fantastic talent,” claimed Romano to his YouTube channel in September.

“One of my sources told me he could become one style of [Paul] Pogba player. He has style, he has potential, he has skills, so we will see what happens with this guy.”

A Pogba-like midfielder? That should be right up Conte’s street considering he managed the France superstar across 78 matches at Juventus before he rejoined Manchester United.

Sarr is certainly looking to contribute at both ends of the pitch, having averaged 2.2 dribbles, 1.7 successful tackles, one shot and 0.9 key passes per 90 minutes in the French top-flight, via WhoScored.

“Pape Matar Sarr is elegance in the midfield, it’s talent, it’s making others play.” once claimed Metz coach Frederic Antonetti.

So come the summer, Conte may not need to look far to find Ndombele’s replacement, thanks to Paratici’s decision in the summer. He seems primed for a shot in Spurs’ first team, especially under the stewardship of the Italian, who has already worked wonders with players like Oliver Skipp and Sergio Reguilon.

As such, he could also save the clubs millions as Sarr seems like the perfect replacement for the struggling flop.

The Lowdown: Minamino struggles at Liverpool

The Japanese playmaker has struggled to make his mark at Anfield since arriving from RB Salzburg in January 2020, often finding himself on the periphery of things.

Minamino hasn’t started a single Premier League game so far this season, appearing for just 87 minutes in the competition, and it is difficult to see the situation changing considering he has not even forced his way in while Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane have been away at AFCON.

The Verdict: Potential shrewd signing

Minamino may have failed to fully make the grade at Liverpool but he is a classy footballer who could be a strong addition by Leeds, having been hailed as ‘outstanding’ by Jurgen Klopp.

The fact that the Reds are reportedly set to sign Luis Diaz from Porto could also push the Japan international further down the pecking order at Anfield, possibly improving Leeds’ chances of getting their man, despite the initial rejection.

Minamino has undoubted pedigree, having scored 42 goals and registered 30 assists in 136 Austrian Bundesliga appearances, and he could bolster the Whites’ attack at a crucial point in the season.
