NUFC’s Emenalo pursuit stalling

A behind-the-scenes update has emerged on Newcastle United’s attempts to land a director of football…

What’s the talk?

According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, the Magpies may wait until after the January window to make an appointment in the role. Michael Emelano is ready to start and has told the club what he would do, but the club are said to be making slow progress in their efforts to get a deal done.

He Tweeted: “Newcastle might not appoint director of football until after January window. #NUFC process making slow progress as concerns grow over urgency of situation. Reported leading candidate Michael Emenalo has submitted plans & is ready to start.”

Infuriated fans

This big blow from Ornstein will surely infuriate fans ahead of what could be a season-defining transfer window for the club in January. It remains to be seen whether or not Eddie Howe can get a tune out of the current first-team squad, following their 2-0 defeat to Arsenal in the Premier League on Saturday.

The Toon Army are bottom of the table and the only team in the entire division who are yet to win a single league match – having played 13 times. They face off against 19th-placed Norwich on Tuesday night and a defeat would see them move six points behind the Canaries, which could be a difficult gap to close if their troubled form continues.

This shows the magnitude of the task Howe is facing at St. James’ Park in the coming months and suggests that the current squad is not good enough – based on the evidence so far – to keep them in the division, which is why signings will be crucial in January.

Football FanCast published an article explaining why Emenalo would be a good appointment for Newcastle, citing his background at Chelsea in particular as a key reason. Therefore, bringing him in as quickly as possible would surely be beneficial to the club, especially given their dire situation in the league and how important the upcoming market is.

The signings they make over the winter could prove the difference between survival and relegation and they may have to make them without a director of football in place. This is why supporters will be infuriated by this update from Ornstein and will quite rightly be livid with PIF for not moving at a faster pace with a deal for Emenalo, as it could be a big blow ahead of the coming months.

'Yesterday's man' Chingoka breaks silence

Zimbabwe’s low-profile chairman Peter Chingoka has finally broken cover

Peter Chingoka: ‘The ZC board has always insisted on an open door policy’•PA Photos

Zimbabwe Cricket chairman Peter Chingoka has finally emerged from months of virtual invisibility to give an interview to Zimbabwe’s Independent newspaper.Chingoka has maintained a low-profile since he was barred from attending an ICC meeting in January because the Australian authorities decided his connections with the Mugabe regime made him an undesirable alien. That followed similar action by the European Union in 2008. In his place, chief executive Ozias Bvute has been the public face of ZC.Locally, critics of Chingoka believe that he is keen to avoid publicity because of the increasing scrutiny of the activities of the board by MDC minister David Coultard. They wryly add that since Chingoka has all but disappeared, Zimbabwe have made massive steps forward. “He’s yesterday’s man,” one former administrator told Cricinfo. “He is associated internally and abroad with the dark days of the game here and his time is thankfully drawing to a close.”Chingoka brushed aside such suggestions, insisting that his silence was because he had “fewer requests for interviews now than I had in the past, and so it appears as if I have been out of the limelight”. He added: “I have been doing three things: continuing to run the sport and getting more time for my business and also my personal life.”What has changed is the game inside Zimbabwe, with many players who fell out with his board returning to the fold. “You may remember us saying all along that our doors are always open and that our objective has always been to make sure that the game is accessible to all Zimbabweans regardless of race, creed or gender. Thus, since the disputes stemming back to 2004, we have had players, former administrators and coaches returning, at different intervals, to offer their services again.”What we have now is what we have always had, which is a positive spirit.”In a sign that there may be more openness than in the recent past, Chingoka was asked if the developments and changes in ZC are meant to repair the damages of your administration? “The ZC board has always insisted on an open door policy,” he replied, “and has, at all times, welcomed and utilised to the benefit of the game the best people who have walked through that door.”Turning to on-field affairs, Chingoka maintained the timescale set out by the ICC for Zimbabwe’s return to Test cricket was “within two years from the meeting of March 2009, but that will be influenced by our results in the next few months”.If they do return then the old issues of games against England, Australia and New Zealand will resurface, but he was adamant there were no problems with the boards of those countries, only the governments. “Our relations with Cricket Australia for example have seen them helping us in our staff development in various spheres of the game. We have had players, coaches and staffers attending courses there. And what about continuing voices, albeit less vocal of late, who question Zimbabwe’s right to continue to be a Full Member of the ICC? “In so far as all the other Full Members are concerned, we have their unwavering support.”It’s worthy to note that Cricket South Africa is right now working on a blue-print following our visit to them and the reciprocal visit by their coordinating committee specifically chosen to help us return to Test cricket. The blueprint is being finalised now by their board and will attach special emphasis on our return to Test cricket at the shortest possible time. It will embrace facets of our cricket from age-groups through to the Test arena.”At the same time, we are also playing our part as an ICC Full Member by helping to upgrade standards in member countries such as Kenya and by sending our sides to age-group tournaments in South Africa where they play against other African countries. It is all part of world cricket wanting to have stronger playing countries. And we are not an island in that.”

O’Rourke drops Celtic transfer update

Peter O’Rourke has dropped a worrying Celtic transfer update regarding the Bhoys’ interest in bringing Cameron Carter-Vickers to Parkhead on a permanent basis.

What’s the talk?

In a recent interview with GIVEMESPORT, O’Rourke stated his belief that, despite Celtic’s reported interest in making the Tottenham Hotspur loanee’s temporary switch a £10m permanent deal, Ange Postecoglou’s side will be unable to get a deal over the line for the defender in January, and may also struggle to do so next summer.

Speaking about the Hoops’ potential move for the 23-year-old, the journalist said: “It definitely won’t happen in January. I think in the summer, depending on where Celtic are and whether they’ve won the title and get automatic qualification to the Champions League, there might be a possibility of doing that one.”

Celtic fans will be gutted

Considering just how impressive Carter-Vickers has been since making the move to Parkhead this summer, the news that the club look unlikely to land the defender on a permanent basis this January is sure to have left Celtic fans gutted.

Indeed, over his 11 Premiership appearances this season, the £1.8m-rated centre-back has helped his side keep five clean sheets, scored two goals and registered one assist, as well as making an average of 1.3 interceptions, 0.7 tackles, 4.7 clearances and winning 71% of his duels per game.

These returns have seen the £20k-per-week man average a highly impressive SofaScore match rating of 7.45, ranking him as the fourth-best performer in the entirety of the Scottish top flight.

As such, while O’Rourke does suggest that winning the league title and playing Champions League football next season could be enough to convince the USA international of a permanent switch to Parkhead, the fact that a move for the centre-back does not look likely this winter, in addition to the Bhoys currently being four points behind the league leaders, is sure be a worry for everyone associated with the club.

Ronchi century adds to New South Wales' pain

Luke Ronchi survived a dropped catch on 99 to post his fourth first-class century as Western Australia compounded New South Wales’ woes on the second day in Sydney. At stumps on a rain-affected day the Warriors had reached 8 for 499, with Steve Magoffin on 2 and Josh Mangan on 5.The weather meant play couldn’t get underway until 3.15pm, which gave Ronchi a long wait on his overnight score of 79. He was desperate to reach triple figures having been dropped from the state side last summer during a batting slump and it was only thanks to Phil Jaques that he got there. When Ronchi was one short of his hundred, he was put down by Jaques at short cover off the bowling of Burt Cockley, and he capitalised on the chance to finish with 148 from 154 balls. It was his first century in first-class cricket in two years, since he blasted an unbelievable 51-ball ton at the WACA in 2007-08.Ronchi had support in a 180-run sixth-wicket stand with Theo Doropoulos, who made 65 before he was caught off Cockley’s bowling. Ronchi eventually fell to Stuart Clark but there was little else for the Blues to cheer on the second day, especially with the young left-arm fast bowler Mitchell Starc off the field with a side strain.

Qual é a nossa convicção? Eu perguntei para eles. Qual é a nossa realidade hoje?

Man Utd eye up Kalvin Phillips move

Manchester United manager Ralf Rangnick is eyeing up a move for Leeds United hero Kalvin Phillips, according to a fresh transfer rumour.

The Lowdown: Phillips’ future unsure

The 25-year-old has become a modern-day Whites great, helping the club return to the Premier League and becoming a vital player for England, too.

Phillips’ performances have caught the attention of some of the country’s biggest clubs, however, and Leeds could find it tough to keep hold of him.

The Englishman’s current Whites deal expires in the summer of 2024, with the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City linked with moves in recent times.

The Latest: Man Utd keen on move

According to ESPN sources, Rangnick sees Phillips as one of three ideal midfield options to come in next summer, as United look to return to the top of English football.

Also mentioned in the report are Amadou Haidara and Jude Bellingham, who are both impressing at RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund, respectively.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-27/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Surely not joining them?

Many Leeds fans may understand Phillips deciding to move on at the end of the season, considering his potential interest in testing himself at Champions League level and potential to win major trophies.

That being said, the thought of him copying Alan Smith and moving to United is a grim one for Whites supporters, given the rivalry that exists between the two clubs.

Moving to Old Trafford could tarnish Phillips’ reputation, which would be a huge shame after 226 appearances and so many influential displays, so seeing him move elsewhere would be preferable if he does decide to leave.

State captaincy could be Clark's next test

Stuart Clark will be happy to lead New South Wales when Simon Katich is away this summer

Stuart Clark will be happy to lead New South Wales when Simon Katich is away this summer, but the downside of a possible promotion is it will mean he’s not in the Test side. With Australia’s selectors currently besotted by the trio of Mitchell Johnson, Peter Siddle and Ben Hilfenhaus – Brett Lee is hovering as well – Clark is facing an uncertain international season. However, if he is overlooked for the first Test against West Indies at the Gabba on November 26 he is a serious option to become a rare fast-bowling leader of a first-class side. Matthew Mott, the New South Wales coach, gave Clark the captaincy in a couple of warm-up games before the Champions League Twenty20 success and the 34-year-old enjoyed the experience, increasing his chances of taking over the back-up leader’s duties from Dominic Thornely.Clark impressed the team management with his tactics and could step in when Katich is opening the batting for the national side – although he hopes he’s not available for his state. “I’m still very focussed on getting myself into the first Test team,” he said. “We’ll have to wait and see what happens. But if I’m not in the Test team and New South Wales ask me to do the job, then I’d definitely do it.”Mott called Clark an “outstanding” thinker, which is not a surprise considering he has been doing a masters degree in commerce, and was happy with his work in the trials. “He brings a lot of experience and credibility and he’s a deep thinker,” he said. “He doesn’t waste his words either.”Fast bowlers are as untrendy as wicketkeepers in captaincy circles, but the Blues used Geoff Lawson in the late 1980s and early 90s and Dave Gilbert, the chief executive, was also astute enough to hold on-field leadership roles before heading upstairs. “I think it’s just hard bowling all the time, when you’re tired and you’ve got to concentrate and move fielders,” Clark said. “But I really enjoy the strategy point of the game, but that’s me as a person, I enjoy strategy. It’s not just cricket, but in life and business, it’s a big part of my life.”If he takes on the role his time in the field will change significantly. “When you bowl, you just bowl and go down to fine leg and think about what you’re doing next over,” he said. “Then all of a sudden you’re in the game all the time [as captain], pushing fielders left and right, thinking about who is going to bowl in 10 overs.”New South Wales have two Sheffield Shield and FR Cup games before the first Test so the team will continue to be Katich’s until then. Thornely led at times last year but the batsman may find it hard to hold a spot throughout the summer given the squad’s impressive list of well-credentialed run-makers. The opener Phil Jaques, who is in form at grade level following back surgery, is another contender being watched by Mott.Form guide: New South Wales in 2008-09

Shield – 6th

FR Cup – 6th

Twenty20 – 1st

The Blues open their season on Sunday with a FR Cup game against Western Australia at North Sydney Oval before the Sheffield Shield fixture at the SCG from Tuesday. With the side fresh from winning the US$2.5m Champions League, it would be easy for the players to feel their season had already peaked. However, Clark is one of a group of men on the edge of the national team. They know the interstate arena is more valuable than their fortnight of success in India.”It was great, but it’s now finished,” Clark said. “The guys are very committed to Twenty20 stuff but they also know that back home there’s quite a lot of domestic cricket that’s just as important, and probably more so for the guys who are on the fringe wanting to play for Australia.”Clark collected four wickets in Australia’s previous two Tests, a win in Leeds and the lost Ashes conclusion at The Oval, but wasn’t called for the following limited-overs encounters. Unlike many of the country’s players, he has had a break and avoided injuries, allowing him to start the summer in prime shape. After 24 Tests he requires another six wickets to reach 100.”I very much still want to play cricket for Australia,” he said. “I’m not sure where I sit with all of that at the moment, but I still haven’t given up playing Test cricket for Australia. With New South Wales, we have a pretty good team, if we keep some of our older players with our youth, I think we’ll do alright, definitely better than last season.” They were last in both the Shield and FR Cup, but this summer Clark might have a greater say in the recovery.
