'Hauritz must play' – Warne

Shane Warne believes Australia would be making a serious mistake if they didn’t play Nathan Hauritz in the first Test

Shane Warne believes Australia would be making a serious mistake if they didn’t play Nathan Hauritz in the first Test despite his ugly figures in the two tour matches. There is a strong chance Australia will name a four-man pace attack for the opening Ashes Test, despite the possibility of England taking in two spinners.Warne said Graeme Swann, Monty Panesar and Hauritz would have enormous roles to play over the next week in Cardiff, where the pitch is expected to help the slow bowlers. First, Hauritz must win the backing of the selectors following his overall haul of 2 for 260 in the games against Sussex and England Lions.”Whatever the speculation, Hauritz has to play for Australia, especially at Cardiff, with Marcus North, Simon Katich and Michael Clarke in support,” Warne wrote in his column in the . “I actually think this is England’s best chance of winning because of the conditions. Edgbaston may favour them as well, but I think Lord’s, Headingley and the Oval will suit Australia.”There isn’t a lot between Hauritz and Swann. The difference is in their attitude. Swann has his confidence up and has been bowling pretty well lately in spin-friendly conditions against the left-handers. Hauritz has been finding his way in England and is trying to cement his spot in the team. Self-belief is very important.”Panesar’s inclusion is not yet certain and Swann, who has never played against Australia in a Test, ODI or Twenty20 international, will be England’s first-choice spinner at Sophia Gardens. Warne said Swann had the potential to frustrate the Australians and their tactic must be to attack him immediately to dent his confidence.”Swann’s character could really get under the skin of the Australians and if I was the England captain, I would give him full licence to be himself,” Warne said. “He isn’t to everyone’s taste. If he is dictating terms, he will have a strut about him and that arrogance and cockiness will be obvious. In that state, he could disrupt Australia’s rhythm.”But when his confidence is down, as with all players, he is not so effective. I think Australia have to try to bring him down to size by taking him on straight away. Michael Clarke has a key role there because he is our best player of spin. His footwork is top-drawer and he could knock Swann seriously off kilter.”Warne also said England had erred by leaving Steve Harmison out of their squad, particularly after his short-pitched successes against Phillip Hughes during the warm-up game. Warne said having a varied attack could be a key during this series and while Australia had a solid mix, England had missed an opportunity by omitting Harmison.”He does offer something different,” Warne wrote. “When I think back to 2005 – which I don’t do unless I have to – what stands out is the variety in the England attack: right-arm swing from Matthew Hoggard, pace and bounce from Harmison, reverse swing at speed from Simon Jones and Andrew Flintoff angling it in awkwardly to the right-handers.”Both sides will be comfortable with their batting but more concerned about how to take 20 wickets. I do think that Australia have bases covered in the pace department, with Mitchell Johnson bowling left-arm and swinging it back into the right-hander to work with the hustle and bustle of Peter Siddle, with Brett Lee swinging it at 150kmh.”

Conte would love Nicolo Barella signing

Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte would love to secure a deal for Nicolo Barella in the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to the Daily Star journalist Paul Brown, who claimed in a recent interview with Give Me Sport that, amid Spurs’ links with a move for the Inter Milan midfielder, Tottenham’s new manager would love to seal a reunion with his former player in north London.

When questioned about Tottenham’s reported interest in a move for the Italy international, Brown said: “Conte would clearly love to have Barella come to Spurs.”

Paratici must move

The fact that Barella has recently put pen to paper on a new deal with the Nerazzurri would appear to make Tottenham’s potential move for the midfielder slightly more challenging. However, when taking into account just how impressive the 24-year-old has been in recent years, it would nevertheless appear an absolute must for Fabio Paratici to do that all he can to land the Italian in January.

Indeed, over his 11 Serie A appearances so far this season, the £58.5m-rated Barella has scored one goal, registered five assists and created a whopping nine big chances for his teammates, as well as taking two shots and making 1.8 key passes per game.

The player who Claudio Marchisio dubbed a “complete” midfielder has also impressed in metrics more typical of his position, making 0.5 interceptions, 1.6 tackles and 40 passes and winning 5.3 duels per match.

These returns have seen the £75k-per-week Italian average an extraordinary SofaScore match rating of 7.44, ranking him as the fifth-best performer in the whole of Serie A.

While it may be an expensive deal to get over the line, Barella clearly seems a player who would be well worth the cost. Also, he would be a signing around whom Conte could build his new-look Tottenham team, just like the 52-year-old did when piecing together his title-winning side at Inter.

Run fest on the cards as Colts lock horns in one-dayers

When touring sides come to India they certainly get the red carpetrolled out for them in every hotel and club they go to

Anand Vasu22-Jul-2009When touring sides come to India they certainly get the red carpetrolled out for them in every hotel and club they go to. No luxury isconsidered a waste. While this might be the case off the field, thekind of pitches rolled out make even the most expansive luxury seemtiresome. After a slow turner at Mumbai saw India go 1-0 up in thethree ‘Test’ series, the wickets served up in subsequent games havebeen anything but sporting. The 22 yards of road that the second andthird ‘Tests’ were played on saw batsmen make merry at the experienceof some very weary bowlers. With the first of three One-Dayers beingplayed in Hyderabad on Friday, the England side can expect more of thesame.Tim Boon, coach of the England team is fully aware of the gravity ofthe situation, "If the Indian batsmen get going, we could be lookingat scores of 350 plus," he said with a guarded smile. While concedingthat, Boon is still optimistic, "Even if the Indian batsmen do getgoing, we have the resources to chase big totals," he added. Talkingabout the contrast in the ways the two teams approached batting, theformer Leicestershire opening batsman conceded, "While the Indianbatsmen tend to go after the bowling, they always give us a chance."This line of thought was certainly upheld by the Indian batsmenthrough the Test series where numerous catches were given – andspilled in the series."I think about 20 catches were put down between both teams in thelast ‘Test’. The fielding certainly has not been up to the standardsexpected at this level," Boon said. In the same breath, he hoped thatthe One-Dayers would see a much more disciplined display. The England side have little to lose going into the limited overgames. After putting up a good fight in the third ‘Test’, at least afew players would have gained confidence. None more so than the Essexleft-arm mediumpacer Justin Bishop. Bowling with character on a wicketthat was flat enough to break any fast bowler’s heart, Bishop pickedup the first five wicket haul by any Englishman on this tour. Theother crucial wheel in the English One-Day cricket machine is NickyPeng. After carting the ball all over the park in Chennai where hemade a hundred, Peng helped himself to a breezy 72 in the third’Test.’ The Durham top order bat will have to come out with all gunsblazing if England are to take the attack to the rampaging Indians. In his turn, Indian coach Roger Binny is confident. "We have somereally talented cricketers. The openers have been in fine nick throughthe ‘Tests.’ Both Vinayak Mane and Gautam Gambhir have made bigscores and that should give them a lot of confidence," the formerIndian allrounder said. The Indian side for the One-Dayers is unlikely to be very differentfrom the team that played the longer duration games. The inclusion ofmiddle order bat Arjun Yadav, wicketkeeper batsman Amit Deshpande andManvinder Bisla gives the Indian think-tank a few extra options. It ispossible that Yadav will find a place in the middle order which hasbeen brittle at times. The three match One-Day series is likely to be a spectator’s dream.Coming from England where most Under-19 games don’t see any manner ofcrowd at all, several English players have been inquiring keenly aboutthe numbers expected at the One-Dayers. While one can’t put even anapproximate number on that, one thing is certain. The bat will comedown hard on the ball on flat pitches and race across quick outfields. If you’re the kind of person who enjoys watching boundaries scored atwill, make your way to Hyderabad for the first One-Dayer.

Celtic: Jota would be ‘value for money’

A permanent deal for Celtic winger Jota will be ‘a no-brainer’, but only if he maintains his current performance levels, according to Alan Hutton.

The lowdown

The 22-year-old joined Celtic on loan from Portuguese outfit Benfica at the end of the summer transfer window and the Hoops have the option to make the deal permanent for a fee of £6.5m.

He has made a strong start to his spell in Glasgow, contributing to eight goals in his first nine Premiership matches. Among those players who have made at least five appearances, WhoScored have him as Celtic’s third-strongest performer, behind only Anthony Ralston and David Turnbull.

A Bola reported last Saturday that the Hoops were ‘satisfied’ with Jota and were ‘thinking about moving forward to the definitive purchase’. A £6.5m deal would be one of the 10 most expensive outlays in the club’s history.

The latest

Speaking to Football Insider, former Scotland defender Hutton praised Jota’s efforts up to this point, but he also urged Celtic to take their time over the decision, stressing that it is ‘a lot of money’ to spend on one player and warning that they could regret making a hasty call.

The 36-year-old said: “If he can maintain this standard of performances, then that £6.5million would represent value for money.

“I’ve read a lot of people just saying ‘get him signed up now’, but I think you just always have to be careful.

“£6.5million for a team in Scotland is a lot of money, and you don’t want to go maybe a bit early and then realise that he’s tailing off towards the end of the season.

“The best thing to do would be to wait until January, monitor the situation and see if he is still progressing and performing.

“If he is doing that – then it’s a no brainer. I’m very sure Celtic will be happy with his displays and just hoping he can continue to produce – and if he does, they’ll sign him up.”

The verdict

Celtic can play the long game here. Jota is only 22 years old and his recent performances have illustrated his potential.

Parting with £6.5m will clearly put a dent in their budget, but it wouldn’t just help them in the short term. They could easily turn a handsome profit a few years down the line if Jota catches the eye of wealthy European clubs.

Hutton is right to advise Celtic against rushing into a decision, but the evidence so far suggests that the player is going a long way towards meriting a permanent deal.

'I have passion for West Indies cricket' – Roach

Rookie fast bowler Kemar Roach has spoken of the passion he derives from representing West Indies and wants to build on a six-wicket haul at Test level

Rookie fast bowler Kemar Roach has spoken of the passion he derives from representing West Indies and wants to build on a six-wicket haul at Test level. Led by Roach’s 6 for 48 from 23.5 overs gave West Indies the upper hand on day two in Grenada, and the bowler, in just his second Test, was thrilled to be at this stage.”It was a fine performance, a magical moment for me,” said Roach. “I have a passion for West Indies cricket. I wanted to play for West Indies. It was always my dream, and I am glad to have been given this chance, and to be here.”I think I can live-up to the expectations which people have for me. I think I have a lot more of these performances left in me. I want to prove to people it’s not just luck or chance of doing well early, but I want to do it throughout my career, and the only way to prove it is through taking wickets.”Bangladesh were being rehabilitated by their captain Shakib Al Hasan and Raqibul Hasan, but Roach’s post-lunch strikes dashed their efforts. First Roach hit Raqibul on the left elbow with a short ball, forcing attention from the physio, and two deliveries later induced an edge with a full delivery. Two overs later Shakib miscued a short ball straight to midwicket to leave Bangladesh 157 for 7.”I put a lot more effort into my bowling [on Saturday] and bowled a few more short balls because I realised that they were worrying the Bangladeshis. It was more about bowling smart – doing the right things at the right time,” said Roach, 21. “We now have a really good chance of winning this Test match and squaring the series, and I am confident that the guys will get the job done.”

Journalist provides Adama Traore update

Adama Traore’s Wolves future is potentially up in the air at the moment with talks going on behind the scenes, according to journalist Luke Hatfield.

The Lowdown: Traore falling out of favour

The 25-year-old has been a solid servant for Wolves, providing incredible pace out wide and contributing to 28 goals in 143 appearances for the club.

Traore has fallen out of favour of late, though, finding himself on the substitutes’ bench in the 2-0 defeat away to Crystal Palace last weekend and not appearing at all in the win over Everton at the start of the month.

The winger has been linked with a move away from Wolves in January, with Liverpool seen as possible suitors.

The Latest: Hatfield makes Traore claim

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Hatfield admits that he believes things are happening away from the pitch with regards to Traore’s future at Molineux

He outlined: “Some fans were saying Crystal Palace was more a game for Adama Traore. But, with his contract situation at the moment, I think there’s things going on behind the scenes with him not playing as much.”

The Verdict: Coming to the end?

Traore is a hugely entertaining player to watch when he is in full flow, mainly due to his unrivalled speed and dribbling ability, but it could be time to part ways with him in January.

His record of 10 goals for Wolves is poor given his position – he has also only registered 18 assists in three years at the club – and he looks to be falling out of favour somewhat under Bruno Lage.

The £27m-rated Spaniard’s current deal expires in the summer of 2023, so January or next summer has to be the time to cash in on him if Wolves want to reap money from a sale.

In other news, some Wolves fans are happy with a contract update that has emerged. Read more here.
