Dhoni insists captaincy isn't a cakewalk

After ceding the limelight to Sachin Tendulkar on the final day inChennai, Mahendra Singh Dhoni fronted up to the cameras and microphones inMohali, perhaps aware that no Indian captain has won three Tests on thetrot [excluding tours of Bangladesh] since Sourav Ganguly triumphed atKolkata, Chennai [Australia] and Bulawayo seven years ago. His record ascaptain thus far is perfect – four from four – and Mohali was the scene ofthe most emphatic victory, a 320-run drubbing of Australia two months ago.”Nothing is easy, I can assure you of that,” said Dhoni with a smile whenasked if this whole captaincy business was a lark. “International cricketis tough. Yes, if you do have a good side, if the side is doing everythingright, it looks a bit easy. I think it’s just that the team is playingreally well.”There was certainly cause for alarm in Chennai, with England dominatingthe first three days of the match. “In the first three days, I don’t thinkwe won too many sessions,” Dhoni said. “But the last two days, we were on themark, we won the sessions that mattered. We raised our standards, we tookthe responsibility as a team, and that’s what really matters. Viru [Sehwag] startedit in the second innings and of course Sachin and Yuvi [Yuvraj Singh] batted really well. But at the same time, the bowlers were also fine. When there werepartnerships, they were willing to bowl and stick to the plans. The cracks on the Mohali pitch didn’t faze him unduly, and he said that heexpected it behave much like the surface on which Australia had beenbeaten. “It’s tough to say how different it is,” he said. “I can only sayhow different it’s looking right now. It’s quite dry, though a fractionharder than the surface we’d played on. But there have been quite a fewRanji Trophy games on the same wicket, and looks can be deceptive. Itcould be on the slower side.”Dhoni was unstinting in his praise for the batsmen who pulled off theChennai chase, and he stressed on how the big partnerships mattered.”I think a lot depended on the start,” he said. “I think it was a perfect start given by Viru, because if you don’t get such a start, you’d be playing to save the game, which is not easy. It looked easy when Yuvi and Sachin were batting. When they were through with theinitial stage, it looked a bit easy. But it’s really tough and getstougher when a new batsman is in. When a partnership gets going, it lookslike a flat wicket. But when a new batsman comes in, all of a sudden theballs seem to start to jump and everything seems to happen, especially ona fifth-day wicket.”In his mind, there were no doubts about Sehwag’s standing in the moderngame. “Whether it’s the last innings he played, or the way he plays, he isone of the most destructive batsmen in Test cricket and one-day cricket,” saidDhoni. The positive mindset within the team has also allowed the likes ofSehwag to play their natural game. “To keep it very simple, we back Sehwagto play his shots even if he gets out in a few innings. As a team, webacked him. We know the game he plays and we know how he’s got so manyruns in international cricket. So believe in the talent that everyindividual has got. That really makes us a real team.”Sehwag’s brilliance in Chennai largely obscured another significantcontribution from Gautam Gambhir, whose form since returning to the sidehas been nothing short of a revelation. “Both of them complement eachother,” said Dhoni. “They’ve played loads of domestic cricket together, they run well between the wickets. Both of them are aggressive, they playtheir strokes. They score at a brisk pace, over three an over. So if theystay together for 10 to15 overs, we know that they would get 50 to 60runs. But the one thing that stands out is their running between thewickets.”
Dhoni on Rahul Dravid: “Once he passes the 30-run mark, he’ll get his confidence back” © AFP
There was some sympathy for the English bowlers who toiled without muchreward on the final day in Chennai, on a pitch where India too hadstruggled for breakthroughs.”They didn’t bowl badly, it’s just that at times things do not go your way,” he said. “When there was a partnership between Paul Collingwood and Andrew Strauss, nothing was happening for us. Even when the ball was bouncing, or hitting the glove, it wasn’t going to the fielders. It happens in cricket at times.”Maybe they could have done something different. They could have got Montyto bowl in the rough; they could have done something different, especiallywhen Sachin went for his chest pad, it was very obvious that he’d notplayed his shots from that region so at that time they could have gone forsome of their options. With a great player like him, you can see what theindications are, which basically in this case was that he would not play shotsfrom the rough, unless it was really pitched up, underneath his bat.”The euphoria surrounding the run chase temporarily stopped talk of theRahul Dravid crisis, but predictably, the questions were back in fullforce on Thursday. “I’ve said that each time, I’m not really worried,”Dhoni said. “I feel it’s just a matter of time. Once he passes the 30-runmark, he’ll get his confidence back. Nobody can question his talent anddetermination. We have confidence in him and I think he’ll get runs atsome point of time.”He didn’t, however, rule out a change in the batting order, with VVSLaxman moving up to No.3 and Dravid dropping down to No.5. “We’rethinking, but at the same time it’s not confirmed because we have to thinkof a few other things as well,” he said. “Shifting Rahul to No. 5 andasking VVS to bat at No. 3, it might seem okay – VVS is scoring runs andit would be easier for Rahul to bat at No. 5. But it might turn the otherway round as well. If on a good ball, VVS gets out, there is alreadypressure on Rahul, and if he comes in with three wickets down early, therewill be more pressure. It’s really tough to battle that. If you’re comingin at No. 3, you come in at one wicket down, and that gives you thefreedom to play your natural game.”Dravid apart, India certainly did that in Chennai. And after storming homewith 20.3 of the day’s scheduled overs still to be bowled, Dhoni wascertain that it would affect the sort of targets set for India infuture. “We were criticised when we didn’t declare in the series againstAustralia,” he said. “Well, the first preference is to save a game. Beingbrave is very important but you can’t be foolish. So from a point whereyou have the control of the game, you shouldn’t give the opposition even achance of winning the game.”Once the opposition knows that it can’t win a match, they just look todefend, and that’s the time when you can really attack them more, pushthem to the back foot. There was that famous Test match when the Indianteam was given the follow-on and it went on to win the game. And afterthat, we’ve seen a number of international sides not giving the follow-on.So it can start a trend, when people would like to be safe first.”With a series to square, Kevin Pietersen and England no longer have thatluxury.

The Zimbabwe captain, Prosper Utseya, has cited his side’s discipline as the key to their victory in the ODI series-opener against Bangladesh in Mirpur. The game nearly slipped away from the visitors while chasing what appeared to be an easy 125, but they held their nerve to win by two wickets.”I think we are a more disciplined side and if we continue to be like that then we should win the series,” said Utseya. “We knew that the wicket would do a little bit especially with the new ball so we needed guys to apply themselves and one batsman in the top four to bat through and others could bat around him. We need the batting to improve. I think we are letting ourselves down in batting I don’t think [in] chasing 125 we should be winning by two wickets.”Ray Price was undoubtedly the hero for Zimbabwe with a career-best 4 for 22 and an unbeaten 23 from 52 balls, including consecutive boundaries to win the match. With six needed from the last over, bowled by Nazmul Hossain, Price charged and swung the first ball for four before flicking the second to the ropes to seal victory.”I am very happy,” said Price. “I think I have been an underachiever with the bat. It was very important that we concentrated today. It is important to take it game by game and ball by ball and not get ahead of yourself and play positive cricket.”You have to be patient at all times in cricket and I am also lucky because of the kind of fielders we have. They make my job a lot easier. I focus on bowling every ball on the off stump. And also I guess the variation.”The failure of the top order had caused yet another upset for the hosts. And the disappointment was writ large on captain Mohammad Ashraful’s face during the post-match interview.”I guess it was the pressure of not being able to score,” he said. “They bowled a superb line and we couldn’t get the score ticking. I had told the players and the coach before going out to toss that we would bat first if I call correctly. The wicket looked hard and I thought if we survive the first ten overs then we would be able to post something like 220 which can be defended on this track.”But we soon realized that this was probably a 160-170 pitch and we wanted to get there. Unfortunately the top-order failed again and we had the impossible task of defending 124. The pitch remained difficult longer than we had anticipated.”He also defended his decision of not opting for a spinner in the final over, and said the bowling department was not the real concern. “We discussed our options and I did speak to the spinners, but probably their confidence level was not quite right and we had seen that the Zimbabwean batsmen at the crease were not too comfortable with pace.”You have to remember that these guys are very new in international cricket and given a bit of time they’ll have the confidence to bowl in such situations but at the moment the bowling is not our problem. The bowlers have been magnificent for a number of matches now.”The second game of the three-match encounter will be played on Wednesday at the same venue, and Ashraful believed the batsmen would have to come good if Bangladesh were to stay alive in the series. “We just have to get a decent score on the board. That is the only area where we are struggling. If we are at our best in all three departments then we should be good enough to bounce back.”

Noel Whelan: Give Vlasic time at West Ham

West Ham United summer signing Nikola Vlasic will be a ‘great signing’ according to BBC Radio pundit Noel Whelan.

The Lowdown: Quiet debut for Vlasic

Following his late transfer window move to the London Stadium, the 23-year-old has made three appearances for the club and has started their previous two games against Dinamo Zagreb and Manchester United.

However, the Croatian only touched the ball 30 times in an hour of action against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side, five fewer than goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski and the lowest of anyone to start for David Moyes’ side on Sunday.

He was eventually replaced by Andriy Yarmolenko with the scores level at 1-1, with former Hammers loan star Jesse Lingard netting a late winner for the Red Devils.

The Latest: Whelan optimistic on Vlasic

Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan has claimed that Vlasic will prove to be ‘a great signing’ for West Ham despite his peripheral involvement on Sunday.

The former Leeds United striker said: “Vlasic needs time. He had one opportunity and nearly got a goal out of it. He is a top-class player, we know that.

“It is important to take into account that he’s playing against a quality Manchester United side. It was never going to be easy. To come straight into a game against United is a tough ask.”

Whelan continued: “Vlasic has shown he is a quality player. West Ham wouldn’t have spent that kind of money on him otherwise. Give him time and he will prove to be a great signing.”

The Verdict: Time will tell

Only time will tell whether Whelan and West Ham are right regarding Vlasic. His disappointing short stint at Everton might not inspire confidence, but his performances for CSKA Moscow in particular show that there is a quality player in there.

He is only three games into his time at the London Stadium and Moyes may well be excited about the prospect of Vlasic and Michail Antonio playing together in the coming weeks after the Jamaica international missed Sunday’s game due to suspension.

The Croatian’s record in Russia, where he scored 33 goals and supplied 21 assists in 108 appearances, puts him in good stead to take his game to the next level under Moyes in east London. Whelan is right – give him time and he could come good.

In other news, a new deal could be agreed for a vital member of the West Ham squad. Find out more here.

Celtic: Vasilis Barkas wanted by two agencies

Celtic goalkeeper Vasilis Barkas is set to be approached by two different agencies, according to journalist Giannis Chorianopoulos.

The Lowdown: Barkas under Postecoglou

The 27-year-old, who cost the Hoops £4.5m last season, has struggled in Glasgow.

He’s made just 23 appearances for the club, with just one of those coming this season under Ange Postecoglou.

Barkas played 90 minutes against FC Midtjylland in a Champions League qualifier but hasn’t featured since following a second-half blunder at Celtic Park.

The Greek goalkeeper is currently represented by CJ Pronk Management, but it appears as if that could change fairly soon.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-14/” title=”Celtic updates!!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Barkas in demand

Greek reporter Chorianopoulos of Sportime.gr took to Twitter on Monday evening to talk about the £9,000-a-week Hoops ‘keeper.

He claimed that two separate agencies have plans to talk with Barkas ahead of a possible switch.

“Two different agencies have plans to approach Celtic’s Vasilis Barkas. To sign with one of them for his representation”

The Verdict: January exit on the cards?

Should Barkas sign with a new agency, that could well lead to a New Year exit for the shot-stopper.

Postecoglou has Barkas, Joe Hart, Scott Bain and Conor Hazard on the books at Parkhead, so letting one go in January certainly makes sense.

That may well prove to be Barkas, if he signs with a new agency before the winter window, which would then give his team plenty of time to find a new destination.

Lorgat urges World Cup organisers to monitor Pakistan

The ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat has asked the 2011 World Cup organising committee to consider shifting venues in case the political climate in Pakistan worsens

The ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat has asked the 2011 World Cup organising committee to consider shifting venues if the political climate in Pakistan worsens. Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are to co-host the World Cup in February-March 2011 but Lorgat said security concerns in Pakistan need to be monitored.”It [alternate venues] is a consideration we have to give attention to,” Lorgat said at a meeting in New Delhi on Tuesday to discuss preparations for the tournament. “This is not something we discussed today, except to ask the organisers to consider alternate host city venues within the country as well as alternate country venues in the event something is not favourable in one of the particular host countries.”Pakistan has struggled to attract touring teams for a number of years because of security concerns. Australia postponed their full tour of Pakistan last year and India pulled out of a tour starting in January this year in the aftermath of the Mumbai terrorist strikes, following which Sri Lanka agreed to a split tour. Earlier this month the ICC decided not to stage the postponed 2009 Champions Trophy in Pakistan after several members expressed reservations about touring the country.Lorgat did not think it was time to panic about 2011. “I think it’s still a long way off to [the] World Cup,” he said. “It is certainly a consideration to keep note of but it’s way too early to be already concerned at this particular stage.”Relations have deteriorated between India and Pakistan after last year’s Mumbai attacks but Lorgat did not think that would affect the World Cup. “This issue must be approached with an optimistic viewpoint, certainly because we still have some time in hand. I think it’s way too early to be presumptuous and assume that things won’t work,” he said. “When we come close to the event, obviously we have to pay much more attention to the issues like safety, security and relation between the countries. But I can assure you at this stage we are planning a World Cup for all four countries.”Among other things, it was decided that, subject to a final approval from the ICC board, the opening ceremony for the event would take place in Bangladesh on February 19, 2011 and the tournament would be spread over six weeks, shorter than in the West Indies in 2007.The planning committee has appointed Salim Butt as its managing director. Lorgat said a number of groups had also been created “so that we can deliver a successful, world-class event.””I am pleased to see that planning arrangements are gathering speed,” said Lorgat. “It is no secret that from an organisational point of view we are a little behind the clock at the moment, but I’m pleased to say the pace has now quickened and the various parties are stepping up to deliver what I fully believe will be a great celebration of world cricket.”
