Family in awe of modern love for Bradman

The son of Don Bradman says he continues to be “astounded” by the amount of affection directed towards his late father

The son of Don Bradman says he continues to be “astounded” by the amount of affection directed towards his late father. In the lead-up to Wednesday’s centenary of Bradman’s birth, John Bradman spoke about the interest that surrounded the hero, cricketer, administrator and family member.”We are extremely proud of him, proud of his achievements, but more proud of him as a person, for the way he coped with those achievements,” John Bradman told . “In that respect he was absolutely remarkable.”We’re very touched that people continue to remember him as they do, so long after he retired from playing cricket. I suppose it [the level of interest] does astound us, it always astounded him. He couldn’t understand why people still remembered him so long after he’d finished playing.”Bradman’s final Test occurred 60 years ago at The Oval, but his legend grew the longer his average of 99.94 remained so far out of reach of the game’s greats. He died in 2001 aged 92 and there was an outpouring of grief in Australia and other parts of the cricket-playing world.Since then Bradman’s name has lived on through his numbers, stories, museum, place names and various exhibitions. Last week the Bradman Collection was opened in the Sir Donald Bradman Stand at the Adelaide Oval. The items had been moved across from the South Australian state library to settle in the ground Bradman made his home after switching states in the mid-1930s.John Bradman said his father was a “chucker-outer” and it was his mother Jessie who nurtured the collection. “She was very keen on keeping family things together,” he said. “The most distinctive thing about the collection is that the entire collection comes from the Bradman family home, and that is how my father wanted it to remain. I played with this stuff in the backyard, which people now handle with white gloves, so it is very precious to our family.”One of the pieces is a rug of the Australian crest that came from John Bradman’s floor. “I remember being in the collection at the library and there were people talking in hushed tones about the pale patches on the green rug as if it was blessed by aliens,” he said. “I didn’t upset them by quietly mentioning it was where my little dog had weed.”On Wednesday John Bradman will attend a lunch at the Melbourne Cricket Club and a dinner in Sydney before visiting Cootamundra, the New South Wales town where the batsman was born in 1908, on Friday. Ricky Ponting is due to give the Bradman Oration at the function in Sydney while Bradman’s grand-daughter Greta will sing at both the major events to mark the centenary.”It’s almost like he’s separate from the game,” Ponting said. “His name and what he achieved, it’s so far out of any player’s reach, in his time or any player who has played since, it’s almost like he played a different game to what we’re playing. He would have been the stand-out player whatever generation he played in.”Ponting met Bradman when he was a 15-year-old at the Academy in Adelaide. “It was an amazing experience,” he said. “The first thing that struck you was his stature. He was quite a short, little guy and very quietly spoken. But everyone in that room was in awe and everyone was sitting on the edge of their seat taking in everything he would say.”

Gers fans don’t believe Hagi rumours

Glasgow Rangers fans are not too happy with the news coming out that the club have rejected several bids for Ianis Hagi.

Hagi made the move to Ibrox in January 2020, initially on loan, and has done extremely well since making that switch despite some patchy periods of form.

In 61 matches in all competitions, he has scored 13 goals and provided 18 assists (Transfermarkt), helping the Ibrox outfit win their 55th league title in their history last term. However, he has come in for criticism in the past for some of his performances.

This term, though, the £5.85m-valued 22-year-old (Transfermarkt) has started fantastically, scoring twice in three games.

According to SporX, that kind of ability has attracted bids of €7m (£6m) from both Sevilla and Lazio, which were swiftly rejected, while Galatasaray had an offer of just €4m (£3.4m) also turned down.

The Gers supporters, though, do not believe this news at all, continuing their mistrust of mainstream media sources.

The news was shared on Twitter by The Scottish Sun’s official account, and it attracted plenty of attention from the supporters. They took to the social media platform to share their thoughts.

Clarke 'still great friends' with Symonds

Michael Clarke has said the decision to send Andrew Symonds home ahead of the recent home ODI series against Bangladesh in Darwin was a collective one

Michael Clarke, the Australia vice-captain, says the decision to send Andrew Symonds home ahead of the recent ODI series against Bangladesh in Darwin was a collective one, and not made by him alone. Symonds was punished by the team’s leadership group for missing a team meeting – he was out instead on a fishing trip – but the move in Ricky Ponting’s absence fuelled speculation that the sanction was instigated by Clarke.”When I was given the vice-captaincy, I knew part of that role was making sure you put the team first,” Clarke told the . “The one thing that has probably been misinterpreted is that I didn’t make the decision to send Andrew Symonds home on my own, it was the leadership group. That group also included Ponting, the coach Tim Nielsen and the team manager Steve Bernard, but it was Clarke who faced the media soon after the decision was made. Clarke, who was one of Symonds’ best friends within the team, denied rumours of a rift between the two.”We believed and still believe it was best for the team and best for Symo as well. I have made clear that I am still great friends with Andrew and I will be until the day I die. I want him back playing because I love playing cricket with him.”Symonds is not part of Australia’s touring party in India, a place where Clarke announced his arrival on the Test scene. The first of four Tests will be at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore, the same ground where he had scored a century on debut.”I want it to feel the same,” Clarke said. “Four years ago for my debut, it was tough cricket but my mindset was just about absolutely soaking up every chance of playing Test cricket for my country. I don’t think that has changed, even if my role in the team has changed a little bit.”

Estamos sempre procurando fazer o melhor para o time – completou Romero.

Expert claims signing Tolisso is a risk worth taking for West Ham

Signing injury-prone midfielder Corentin Tolisso is a risk worth taking for West Ham United, according to Get French Football News’ Adam White.

David Moyes has been keen to bolster his Hammers squad after leading the east Londoners into the Europa League thanks to registering a club-record Premier League points tally last season.

According to German media outlet Sport 1, Bayern Munich central midfielder Tolisso is among Moyes’ transfer targets ahead of next week’s transfer deadline. The report suggests Italian giants Juventus are also keeping tabs on Tolisso, who won the 2018 World Cup with France.

Bild has claimed Tolisso could be signed for as little as £8.4million, with the 27-year-old’s Bayern contract expiring in less than 12 months.

Tolisso has been made to contend with a host of injury problems in recent years and was restricted to just 24 appearances as Bayern retained the Bundesliga title last season.

But French football expert White believes it is a no-brainer for West Ham to follow up their interest in the midfielder.

He told Football FanCast: “For West Ham, I think it would absolutely be a risk worth taking.

“He is an experienced player regardless of those injuries. I think he would be a fantastic signing, although it is slightly caveated by his fitness.”

Ponting banks on new-age fielding

Ricky Ponting leads the brave outlook and wants to use his fresh talent towear down India’s veterans, so they are the ones wilting instead ofAustralia’s new faces

They may be as green as the ends of the Bangalore pitch, but Australiawill rely on their untried and untested as they attempt to upstage India. The visiting side is almost unrecognisable from the one that won in 2004 -and it doesn’t bother the players.Ricky Ponting leads the brave outlook and wants to use his fresh talent towear down India’s veterans, so they are the ones wilting instead ofAustralia’s new faces. To counter the problem that only Ponting, MatthewHayden, Michael Clarke and Simon Katich have played a Test in India, thecaptain is demanding new-age fielding for his new-look side. He wantsyouthful enthusiasm – five players in the 12 are in their 20s, which isyoung by Australia’s recent standards – to override experience.Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman arecoming towards the end of their careers and Ponting hopes to exploit anycreak in their bodies and fatigue in their minds. “I really think we cantake them on in the field, almost a new-age type of Test cricket that canmake a few of their guys look a bit old and a bit slow,” he said. Pontingspoke to the team on Tuesday and pushed the point along with the need forsharp running between wickets.”We can create pressure on them with our intensity in the field atdifferent times, and make them look past their use-by date,” he said.”That’s what we’re trying to achieve, to put their older guys underimmense pressure. We know if we do that, and make little things standout, their whole media over here will just jump on them, especially ifthey lose an early game.”The total fielding concept has been developed under the assistant coachMike Young, a former baseball mentor, and Australia will have to be onfire to make up for their other deficiencies. Spin bowling is the mainproblem – Cameron White and Jason Krejza are fighting for the final spotin the XI – and a new combination is being tried in the middle orderfollowing Andrew Symonds’ suspension.Shane Watson will bat at No. 6 in his fourth Test – his first for threeyears – and will enter ahead of Brad Haddin and White, if he is preferredfor his superior run-making skills. Michael Clarke has had a stomach bugthis week but trained on Wednesday and will take his place, which is a bigboost for the side as it needs his multi-purpose skills.Another concern for Australia is that none of their fast men have appearedin a Test in India. Brett Lee will lead the attack, with Stuart Clark andMitchell Johnson as support, and Ponting has faith in the combination.”Our spinners are young and inexperienced at Test level, but if you lookat our fast bowlers, those guys are very skilled and talented,” Pontingsaid. “There’s no reason why our fast bowlers alone can’t win us this Testseries.”In 2004 Australia relied heavily on Glenn McGrath, Shane Warne and Jason Gillespie with the ball and Damien Martyn with the bat. Ponting expects the next rung of representatives to step up in this series.”There are a number of challenges for me as captain,” he said. “I need tolook at different ways and call on different guys at different times toget similar jobs done to the ones McGrath and Warne and those guys weredoing for us.”Anyone who plays for Australia is capable of getting any job done. Iexpect that when I ask Mitchell Johnson or Stuart Clark or Brad Haddin todo a certain job for me or the team, they’re good enough to get it done.”He will also require a lot more output from himself. India is the onlyplace Ponting has not conquered and it is something he is determined tofix. In eight Tests here he has managed 172 runs, including only 17 in the 2001 series when his nightmare with Harbhajan Singh began.”For me it’s just a matter of trusting myself,” he said. “The series herein 2001, the really bad series, was because I didn’t trust my technique andwas trying to find a way in every innings to combat mainly Harbhajan.”I’ve learned a lot and come a long way as a player since then. Only thisplace in the world has got me.” If it happens again Australia’s hopes ofretaining the Border-Gavaskar Trophy might be impossible.

Aston Villa’s predicted line-up vs Barrow

Aston Villa get their Carabao Cup campaign underway on Tuesday night when they take on Barrow in the second round.

Dean Smith’s side were, of course, finalists in 2020 where they were beaten by Manchester City, while they were knocked out of the competition in the fourth round last season by Stoke City.

The Villa boss will no doubt ring the changes to his starting line-up for today’s clash, with many of those who started in the 2-0 victory over Newcastle in the Premier League at the weekend unlikely to do so again.

And, with that in mind, below is a look at the kind of line-up Smith might look to put out for Villa’s clash against Barrow.

In goal, Emi Martinez is likely to be given a rest with back-up shot-stopper Jed Steer coming for his first competitive game for Villa since that 1-0 defeat to Stoke last season.

The back-four is also set to see wholesale changes, with Frederic Guilbert making his first Villa appearance since returning from loan last term.

Matt Targett should come straight back in at left-back, while Kortney Hause is likely to be partnered by Axel Tuanzebe, who could make his second debut for the club following his initial loan spell.

Further forward, Smith could be in line to make some exciting changes by starting three of the club’s brightest young academy talents, with Carney Chukwuemeka, Jaden Philogene-Bidace and Jacob Ramsey ready to make their mark.

And up front, with Ollie Watkins still out, Wesley could come in for Danny Ings as he looks to prove why he should remain at the club and be given the chance to impress.

Predicted XI: Steer; Guilbert, Tuanzebe, Hause, Targett; Nakamba, Ramsey; Philogene-Bidace, Chukwuemeka, El Ghazi; Wesley.

Meanwhile, Villa are plotting a late swoop for this star…
