A concorrência no Tricolor é forte.

Bradburn and Stead beat the showers

Pesky showers had an early influence, on what was effectively the first day of play in the Northern Districts-Canterbury Shell Trophy match, but in the end they could not deny a batsman and a bowler a very good day at the office

Chris Rosie13-Feb-2001Pesky showers had an early influence, on what was effectively the first day of play in the Northern Districts-Canterbury Shell Trophy match, but in the end they could not deny a batsman and a bowler a very good day at the office. Grant Bradburn and Gary Stead stood out as their respective colleagues found wickets and runs hard to come by.After a delayed start, the players came and went at regular intervals during the first two sessions, keeping the ground staff and various helpers occupied with the delivery and removal of the plastic covers. However, at the weather’s convenience, 84 overs – 41 of them in the two-and-a-half hours between tea and stumps – were bowled after Northern Districts won the toss and put Canterbury in on a pitch that offered an interesting contrast of green grass and dark earth. Simon Doull gave that decision early support with the wicket of Robbie Frew in his first over before a run had been scored. But then it was Doull who raised questions about Northern’s policy of preferring two spinners over the medium pace of Graeme Aldridge with a helpful pitch and heavy cloud cover. In his second over, Doull pulled up with a groin strain and although he continued through the morning session, albeit at a lower pace, he was not sighted at the bowling crease in the afternoon. As it turned out, the two-spin tactic benefited Northern, Bruce Martin and Bradburn getting the breakthroughs when Joseph Yovich, Alex Tait and a hampered Doull failed to make the best of the conditions. They were helped by some smart reflex catching in close as Michael Parlane, Mark Bailey and James Marshall put their hands in the right place at the right time.Bradburn turned into Northern’s biggest trump card on a pitch that was suppposedly going to help pace. A nagging length, some surprising turn and persistent accuracy brought the reward of four wickets for 56 off 25 overs. Robbie Hart would probably have been happier if his pace attack had placed similar demands on the batsmen. For Canterbury, their captain showed every sign of not allowing the conditions to take control. Without his unbeaten 77, the Canterbury total would have made sorry reading. A solid defence coupled with the occasional bit of judicious hitting ensured his team a degree of stability. With contributions in the 20s from Harley James, Jarrod Englefield and Gareth Hopkins, the southern visitors would not be too unhappy with 175 for six at the end of a day in which the toss was expected to be crucial. It may have been – but it was a spinner who put bowling first to best advantage.Northern will come back tomorrow intent on wrapping up the Canterbury innings quickly to ensure a chance in the last two days of collecting the outright needed to keep them in touch with the top of the table. If Canterbury respond to their captain’s example, Northern will have their work cut out.

Paratici set to offload Spurs’ deadwood

Alasdair Gold has dropped an exciting transfer claim as Tottenham Hotspur embark on a new era…

What’s the word?

Writing on Twitter, the ever-reliable football.london reporter claimed that it would be a “big summer of change” in North London following the appointment of Fabio Paratici as managing director of football.

It’s a role that has not been filled since Franco Baldini departed in 2015, so it certainly is an interesting new approach from Spurs chairman Daniel Levy.

Gold linked to his latest column and wrote:

“The latest as I understand it on Paulo Fonseca, with talks progressing, Fabio Paratici’s arrival and a big summer of change at Spurs as I understand, a number of players have now been told they can leave and their agents instructed to find moves.”

Spurs’ new era

This latest development is hugely encouraging news as it shows that the Italian has already been working on Spurs’ summer business before he officially starts on July 1st.

He has one mighty task on his hands, too.

The Lilywhites finished seventh in the Premier League – their worst placement since 2008/09 – and have not won a major trophy since clinching the League Cup in 2008.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-manager-gossip-transfer-rumours-team-and-injury-updates-and-much-more” title= “Read the latest Spurs news, manager gossip, transfer rumours, team and injury updates and more!”]

There is also the small matter of keeping superstar striker Harry Kane at the club amid reports after reports suggested that he has expressed his desire to leave this summer.

A lot of the current squad have remained since Mauricio Pochettino’s stint, so you could argue that those players that let him down in the wake of their Champions League loss were the exact same ones who were at fault for Jose Mourinho’s downfall.

So the fact that Paratici already knows that he must move several of these players on should come as a major source of excitement for many in N17. It’ll also help boost the transfer kitty, with ex-Roma coach Paulo Fonseca expected to be appointed in the coming week or so.

He and the Italian are both about to kickstart a new era at Tottenham Hotspur. And that must be aided by the departure of several fringe stars.

Also according to Gold, Serge Aurier has announced his intention to leave whilst Juan Foyth’s loan move to Villarreal is expected to be made permanent.

The likes of Lucas Moura, Erik Lamela, Moussa Sissoko, Harry Winks, Dele Alli and Davinson Sanchez are all potential candidates for the chopping block, having been linked with an exit in recent months.

As mentioned above, this should create funds to help Paratici bolster Fonseca’s playing squad ahead of next season and whilst he’s not been the preferred candidate, it should give many supporters huge confidence that things are changing for the better, at long last.

À espera do visto, Guerra dá atenção especial à parte física no Verdão

Resta definir a data.

Hampshire struggle to avoid the follow-on against Warwickshire

Hampshire’s insipid display at Edgbaston only worsened when they plunged towards the follow-on in making 150 for 8 in reply to Warwickshire’s formidable total of 455

John Sheldon21-Apr-2001Hampshire’s insipid display at Edgbaston only worsened when they plunged towards the follow-on in making 150 for 8 in reply to Warwickshire’s formidable total of 455.The second day began well for the south coast county when Nick Knight was lbw to Alex Morris for 140 from the first ball he faced, but that was just about the only good news as Warwickshire pressed hard for their first win under new captain Michael Powell.Dominic Ostler, who shared in a stand of 196 for Knight, went on to make 119 before he was bowled by Dimitri Mascarenhas and former skipper Neil Smith happily returned to the ranks with a half-century in 72 balls.Smith went lbw for 54 in a late mopping-up by John Stephenson (3 for 48), and though Alan Mullally and Morris emerged with credit by sharing five wickets earlier, Hampshire needed 306 to make the home side bat again. This seemed within reach when openers Derek Kenway and Giles White put on 62 for the first wicket – and then disappeared when Mo Sheikh, with a career-best 4 for 36, and Dougie Brown (3 for 42) exposed a fragile batting line-up.Wicketkeeper Keith Piper held three catches – including a brilliant leg-side effort to remove Robin Smith for four – as Hampshire nose dived to 111 for 7, but a missed slip chance allowed Morris to join Neil Johnson in a belated show of spirit. The Zimbabwean newcomer, Johnson, went a little towards compensating for bowling figures of 0 for 100 by hanging on for 30 overs to make an unbeaten 26.

Rangers eyeing Ivan Lepinjica

A major update has emerged in Rangers’ pursuit of a Croatian midfielder, and it could lead to Ross Wilson landing a cracking deal for the club.

What’s the talk?

According to Football Insider, Rangers are working hard on a deal to sign defensive midfielder Ivan Lepinjica from Croatian side Rijeka this summer. The report claims that the Gers are interested in signing the 21-year-old on an initial loan, with an option to make it permanent at the end of the 2021/22 season.

Premier League side Tottenham were looking into a move for Lepinjica before pulling out of the race due to concerns over his injury problems at Rijeka.

Last year, HITC claimed that Croatian football expert Ivan Zezelj likened the youngster to Manchester United and France midfielder Paul Pogba in his style of play. Zezelj also spoke about how Lepinjica is mature for his age as he told HITC: “Lepinjica is a natural number six; young and very talented. He can play as a number eight as well, in my opinion.

“He’s very mature for his age. Last season, he was promoted to the senior squad and instantly played like an experienced pro.”

Fans would love it

Rangers fans would surely love it if the club could seal a deal for Lepinjica. The 21-year-old has already played 70 competitive games for Rijeka’s first team and has been capped at various youth levels by Croatia, suggesting that he has stood out among his peers to make it through to Rijeka’s team ahead of others in the youth ranks.

Tottenham’s interest in his services is also a good sign for Rangers, as it shows that Lepinjica was performing at a level where Premier League sides took notice of his talent.

This shows that the Gers could be about to bring in a top-quality midfield player with plenty of promise. He could be someone who is able to develop over time and learn under the coaching of Steven Gerrard as he has many years ahead of him in the game at 21.

Rangers fans could enjoy watching him flourish over a number of years as they see his progress as a player and a person, with his potential being one of the reasons why the club must sanction a deal for Lepinjica.

The deal being an initial loan also makes it ideal for Rangers from a financial point of view. The £720,000-rated beast can be monitored during his loan spell with the club, allowing Wilson and Gerrard to run the rule over him before deciding whether or not they want to commit funds to keep him on a permanent basis.

This would mean that Rangers are not stuck with him if, for whatever reason, it does not work out for him in Scotland. It could be a great deal all round and Wilson should sanction it this summer.
