Mike Ashley may rue Steve Bruce’s handling of Sean Longstaff after Newcastle United reportedly rejected a move by Valencia to sign the midfielder ahead of Monday’s deadline.

What’s the word?

According to the Mirror, Valencia approached the Toon wishing to discuss a deal that would have seen Longstaff join the La Liga outfit until the end of the season with a view to a £15m transfer.

Longstaff has entered into the final 18-months of his £25,000-per-week contract and has been omitted from Bruce’s last three matchday squads after a major dip in form.

The Mestalla Stadium natives, managed by former Watford coach Javi Gracia, had hoped that Longstaff would be available for a move with the prospect of purchasing the 23-year-old in the summer.

Newcastle opposed Valencia’s offer and instead plan to offer Longstaff a new contract, while Bruce is loath to part with the Magpies’ product and weaken his squad amid a potential relegation battle.

United moved to eight points clear of the Premier League drop zone with a 2-0 win over Everton on Saturday, while 18th-placed Fulham and 19th-placed West Bromwich Albion were forced to settle for a point after drawing 2-2 at The Hawthorns.

Longstaff has not featured for Newcastle since the Toon became the first side to lose a top-flight game to Sheffield United this season, in what was his ninth start in 12 league appearances this term.

Ashley may deplore Bruce for Longstaff’s decline

Valencia only offering an option to purchase Longstaff for £15m in the summer shows the scale of the midfielder’s decline over the past 18-months, having been valued by the Magpies as high as £50m amid interest from Manchester United in the summer of 2019.

The Red Devils were not willing to pay the asking price, regardless of manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reportedly demanding a deal was secured for £25m, and soon made the Newcastle product yesterday’s news despite their on-going search for a specialist defensive midfielder.

Magpies legend Rob Lee even recently took to claiming that Longstaff has to earn a move to a top side, while speaking exclusively with Football FanCast amid links to Tottenham Hotspur, as he must get his head down to be the player that he was previously.

Part of that has to be attributed to Bruce, who has overseen Longstaff’s return from a knee ligament injury and failed to get the midfielder back to anywhere near the level that Rafa Benitez saw him reach following the Toon star’s senior breakthrough.

Benitez had long valued Longstaff’s potential, he rejected moves by Rangers to sign the 23-year-old before ever making a first-team appearance on Tyneside, and backed the youngster to continue developing at a rapid rate.

“He is somebody who will continue to get better because he listens to you and works hard. He’s very humble,” Benitez said, via quotes by Chronicle Live. “He knows that he’s doing well. At the same time, he will continue to work hard.

“He’s not somebody who will just accept arriving on the scene then say: ‘That’s me done’.”

Something must be missing on the training ground for Longstaff to regress at such a rapid rate, and no doubt that will leave Ashley rueful of Bruce’s methods knowing the size of fee Newcastle are watching fade away with every day that passes.

David Sullivan risks paying the price for a January blunder amid reports West Ham United will look to sell Felipe Anderson for just £17m at the end of the season.

What’s the word?

According to Claret & Hugh, the Hammers are lining up a clear out at the London Stadium including Anderson and Andriy Yarmolenko after parting with Sebastien Haller last month.

David Moyes’ side are thought to be ready to take a sizable hit on the fees paid for the pair of unwanted wingers, whom Manuel Pellegrini and former Director of Football Mario Husillos spent £36m and £18m for respectively in 2018.

The Irons now reportedly value Yarmolenko at between £5-6m as they look to offload his £115,000-per-week salary on a deal running to 2023, while C&H claim Anderson is now only worth £17m in a potential £19m loss for the claret and blue outfit.

Anderson was signed from SS Lazio in 2018 for a then club-record fee, eclipsing the £22m that Pellegrini and Husillos had paid Toulouse for French defender Issa Diop earlier that summer.

The Brazilian winger is currently on a season-long loan with Liga NOS giants FC Porto struck last October, but has only featured nine times for the Dragoes across all competitions ahead of Sergio Conceicao’s title-chasing side hosting relegation-threatened Boavista on Saturday night.

Conceicao has so far not afforded Anderson a key role in his plans, with the £85,000-per-week Brazilian starting just one Portuguese top-flight fixture while being left an unused substitute five times and omitted from six matchday squads in the league to date.

Missed a trick

West Ham were touted to be considering recalling Anderson from his Porto horrors last month and strive to find a new temporary home for the 27-year-old, given his lack of game time at the Estadio do Dragao.

Fiorentina even emerged as a possible destination for the two-time international, but the Irons ultimately opted against terminating his Dragoes deal while Porto were cited as seeing the forward as having greater chances on the field in the near future.

That decision has now proven a blunder with Conceicao still leaving Anderson on the sidelines most of the time, and ignoring Fiorentina’s interest will represent a serious missed opportunity if Sullivan can only drum up offers worth around £17m in the summer.

West Ham would have expected Fiorentina to field Anderson far more often than Porto are, with Cesare Prandelli’s Artemio Franchi Stadium natives in a potential relegation fight having scored the second-lowest tally in the Serie A this season with 21 goals in 21 games.

Anderson may not have scored in his nine games for Porto and may have only offered one goal in 27 games for West Ham last season, yet knows the Italian league well from his time with Lazio and could have offered a threat beside Dusan Vlahovic and Gaetano Castrovilli – who are the only players to have scored more than twice in the league for La Viola to date.

Anderson scored 25 goals and provided 30 assists in the Serie A before joining the Hammers in 2018, and building on his numbers could have driven Sullivan’s asking price back up.

Contratação mais cara do Verdão no ano passado, Dudu foi comprado por R$ 19 milhões, em janeiro. Apesar de um início conturbado, o atacante tornou-se um dos principais jogadores do time e acabou a última temporada como artilheiro: foram 16 gols marcados, além de 12 assistências.

أهداف مباراة بيراميدز وإنبي

Sheffield Wednesday veteran Sam Hutchinson badly let Owls interim boss Neil Thompson and his side down on Wednesday night as they were well-beaten in the Championship.

Indeed, the south Yorkshire strugglers tasted a third successive league defeat, leaving them three points adrift of safety with only one game in hand – a worrying position to be in with only 15 games left to play.

According to the BBC, Wednesday had decent periods of possession early in the first half, failing to capitalise on the hosts’ slow start before they took the lead in the 23rd minute.

Brentford then hit two more goals in a nine-minute period late in the second half to seal all three points in the capital.

Thompson’s first change came in the 55th minute with the game still only 1-0 and that saw Adam Reach, who was deployed out of his usual position in a no.10 role behind the striker, replaced by Fisayo Dele-Bashiru.

And it led to many supporters taking fire at the long-serving Owls star as they believed he was underwhelming during his time on the pitch, as you can see in the replies to the club’s official Twitter account here.

However, their frustrations may have been pointed in the wrong direction – yes, Reach appears shot of confidence (another reason fans should hold fire) but he was only playing in the role for the fourth time this term, and for the first time in five outings, as per Transfermarkt.

WhoScored shows that his best performances come at left-back (7.31 average rating) or left wing-back (6.81) rather than through the middle, so that disastrous call is on Thompson rather than the player.

Instead, the brunt of the flak should be aimed towards one of the Owls’ veterans, one that should know and do so much better – Hutchinson.

As per SofaScore ratings, the 31-year-old powerhouse was graded as Wednesday’s worst midfielders (6.1) – in fact, only two other players received a worse rating across both teams.

Hutchinson is usually a commanding presence in the middle of the engine room, where he usually wins nearly six battles per game but against the promotion-chasing Bees, he was weak and ineffective, winning just one of six duels (16%).

He was also rather wasteful in and out of possession, managing to make only 77% of his 47 passing attempts, whilst also losing the ball 12 times, meaning he lost possession once every 4.5 touches.

Only two other starters had a worse night in terms of passing accuracy, and they could be forgiven as the pair are defenders, who aren’t supposed to be as good with the ball at their feet as say, a midfielder.

The 5 foot 11 calamity was also found wanting on plenty of occasions as he topped the charts for the number of times dribbled past (three) for the visiting Owls.

Again, this is abysmal and well below his usual average of being dribbled past only 0.3 times per outing since re-joining the Hillsborough-based outfit.

Overall, Hutchinson should be steering this struggling Wednesday outfit to safety and instead, he’s dropping inept performances like this when it truly counts.

The former Chelsea man let his manager down big time.

A relação teve um abalo em fevereiro, quando o clube fez propaganda do Avanti no uniforme sem comunicar a Crefisa. O ato incomodou à cúpula da empresa, que em resposta não depositou os R$ 6,5 milhões pagos mensalmente ao clube, no início do mês. Até o momento, o Verdão não recebeu esta quantia.

A reunião não foi remarcada para esta semana, pois Maurício Galiotte, primeiro vice-presidente do clube e aquele que toca as reuniões com a patrocinadora, acompanhará no Uruguai o jogo contra o Nacional, marcado para quinta.

A patrocinadora paga R$ 66 milhões por ano para ser a única a estampar suas marcas (Crefisa e FAM) em todo o uniforme e considerou que a propaganda do programa de sócio-torcedor no jogo contra a Ferroviária burlava este acordo, principalmente porque a camisa não foi apresentado com antecedência.

Agora, Crefisa/FAM desejam adicionar cláusulas no contrato:uma multa se o clube não apresentar com antecedência o uniforme a ser usado em jogo, além de aumentos nos números de ingressos por partida e camisas recebidas por mês, por exemplo. O clube ainda não respondeu oficialmente, mas já deu a entender que algumas exigências não poderão ser atendidas.

Depois do problema, o clube apresentou previamente a camisa dos jogos seguintes e a relação segue, inclusive com reuniões semanais, como já acontecia antes do incidente.Ao todo, os patrocinadores pagam R$ 78 milhões por ano ao Verdão (os R$ 66 milhões, além de cerca de R$ 12 milhões pelos gastos de Lucas Barrios).

وانتشرت تكهنات في الفترة الأخيرة تفيد بأن آرسنال ينوي بيع أوباميانج في موسم الانتقالات الشتوي المقبل، بعد اهتمام أكثر من نادِ بضمه مثل برشلونة ويوفنتوس.

ولكن صحيفة “ذا صن” الإنجليزية ذكرت أن إدارة آرسنال ليس لديها نية بشأن السماح للاعب صاحب الـ32 عامًا بالرحيل في يناير القادم.

ويدرك آرسنال أنه لا يوجد نادِ يستطيع الإيفاء براتب أوباميانج الذي يصل إلى 350 ألف جنيه إسترليني، كما أن حقيقة أنه سيبلغ سن الـ33 عامًا نهاية الموسم الحالي تعني أن قيمة بيعه لن تكون قريبة من الرسوم التي دفعها النادي لشرائه في 2018 من بوروسيا دورتموند مقابل 60 مليون جنيه إسترليني.

وأشارت إلى إنه من جهة أخرى، فإن المدرب مايكل أرتيتا لا يرغب في التخلي عن أوباميانج في الميركاتو الشتوي، حيث يريد كافة اللاعبين في صفوف فريقه من أجل المنافسة على التأهل إلى دوري أبطال أوروبا الموسم المقبل لأول مرة منذ 2017.

السماح برحيل أوباميانج في نافذة الانتقالات الشتوية دون تأمين مهاجم آخر سيجعلهم جاهزين، في حالة إصابة ألكسندر لاكازيت.

ولا يتبقى سوى 18 شهرًا في عقد أوباميانج الحالي، ولا يزال جزءًا أساسيًا من آرسنال رغم تراجع مستواه في الموسم الحالي.

أرتيتا، الذي سبق أن اتهم أوباميانج بالفشل في إظهار الالتزام والشغف في اللعب مع النادي، يشعر أنه أوضح وجهة نظره بالفعل وأنه منفتح على عودة أوباميانج بعد انتهاء مشواره مع الجابون في أمم إفريقيا.

Celtic were unable to keep their unbeaten winning streak going yesterday as they lost in a rather weak manner.

The Hoops fell at the hands of a plucky Ross County having arrived at Victoria Park off the back of a strong five games prior, scoring 13 goals in that time and conceding just two. However, they wouldn’t be celebrating their sixth victory.

Just the one goal was scored last night, coming in the 71st minute as Jordan White managed to find the back of the net and snatch the points away from a wounded Celtic.

The reigning league champions will be disappointed with an overall lacklustre performance. Jonjoe Kenny, in particular, was off his game, but there was one man who managed to shine, despite the poor result.

Callum McGregor vs Ross County

Callum McGregor has been an integral part of Neil Lennon’s squad this season. Talks have emerged about the idea of him taking the captain’s armband from Scott Brown, who is out of contract in the summer.

With big boots to potentially fill down the line, the midfielder has been solid in the engine room this campaign and he was one of the few positive takeaways against Ross County.

According to Sofascore, he took a mammoth 124 touches of the ball, which was more than any other player on the pitch. This just goes to show how much of a feeder player he operates as in midfield – he is always giving and receiving the ball to try and make some magic happen.

McGregor also made an impressive 101 accurate passes, completing 90% of those attempted, as well as putting in 11 accurate long balls and making one key pass.

Neil Lennon is also a huge fan of McGregor’s and recently waxed lyrical about his influence. The boss described him as a “metronome” in the middle of the park, which is a huge compliment for someone awaiting to take charge of his club as future captain.

Celtic did lose the game, but captain-in-waiting McGregor can still be proud of his performance.
