وأشاد رئيس النادي بالأداء المتميز للفريق والروح العالية للاعبي الأهلي، وإصرارهم على إحراز الفوز والتتويج بكأس مصر لليد، بعد أيام قليلة من خسارة بطولة الدوري في مباراة فاصلة بذل فيها اللاعبون جهدًا كبيرًا.

وأكد الخطيب تقديره للجهود الكبيرة التي بذلها الجهاز الفني واللاعبون على مدار مشوار الموسم، وتقديمهم أداءً متميزًا وتحقيق نتائج تلبي طموحات الأهلي وجماهيره.

وأشار إلى أن الفوز ببطولة كأس مصر لليد يعد خطوة طيبة، ولكن الفترة القادمة تحتاج إلى جهود مضاعفة على كل المستويات لإسعاد جماهير الأهلي.

Arsenal could be set to sell Granit Xhaka during the January transfer window, following the events and aftermath of the Crystal Palace match, as reported by The Mirror.

What’s the word?

It has been a tough time for the Switzerland international, since he used expletives having been booed off during the Crystal Palace match.

He was stripped of the captaincy by Unai Emery, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang taking over the role from him.

The Switzerland international also put out a statement explaining his reaction, which he signed off by saying: “Let’s move forward positively together.”

However, that eventuality now seems unlikely, as he could be sold during the winter window, with Bundesliga clubs said to be admirers of the 27-year-old, while The Times have indicated that Newcastle United could make a move for him.

A chance to step up

This is an unfortunate series of events for Xhaka, but where there is a loser there is usually also a winner.

In this scenario, Matteo Guendouzi could be the beneficiary.

The 20-year-old has already been an integral part of the team this season, starting all 11 league games, but with Xhaka out of the team it could allow him to become the undisputed leader of the Gunners’ midfield.

He has shown the potential to do that through his performances so far, having an impact both on and off the ball.

The way that he has done this indicates a capability to step up and take over a leadership role in the middle of the park moving forward – Xhaka, who is valued at £40.5m by Transfermarkt, being sold would give him the perfect opportunity to start doing this on a regular basis.

And Arsenal icon Per Mertesacker has already alluded to the youngster’s leadership credentials in an exclusive interview with talkSPORT.

“He’s someone we need to really watch. In terms of can he be a future Arsenal leader and be consistent week in week out? That’s what we expect from him now.

“We’re in a situation where we need players to step up. Everyone is asking: ‘Who is the captain? Who are the leaders?’

“We need players who step up on the field and show what they’ve capable of, and I have a good feeling we have a lot of people who can do that.”

That a player of Mertesacker’s reputability spoke so openly of his leadership credentials speaks volumes about his potential to grow in stature in north London.

On the field of play, the Frenchman has averaged 1.8 tackles, 1.4 interceptions and 1.5 dribbles, while he has also made 1.5 dribbles per game and recorded a pass success rate of 87.9% so far this season.

This is part of his rapid progression since joining Arsenal from Ligue 2 outfit Lorient, a step up in quality that he has dealt with brilliantly, as indicated by the role the midfielder has managed to forge for himself in the team already.

Could he be a future captain in the making?

The departure of Xhaka may well force Guendouzi to take a more senior role within the side and succeed where the Switzerland international so acrimoniously failed.

Laurie Whitwell of The Athletic has indicated that Fred could be Paul Pogba’s replacement when speaking after Manchester United’s 3-1 win over Brighton & Hove Albion.

What did he say?

Fred put in an impressive performance during the victory over Brighton on Sunday, with many fans feeling he was robbed of being named Man of the Match.

This is another encouraging sign for the Brazilian, who has now gone on to start five Premier League games in a row for the Red Devils.

Following the victory, one fan asked Whitwell whether Fred could push Pogba out of the team, to which he replied: “It’s certainly an interesting question, with Pogba seeming on course for the exit next summer. I think United have to plan without him. Fred is finally beginning to show why United paid that money. Maybe not £52m, but he clearly has all the tools.”

Big shoes to fill

Pogba’s performances are often intensely critiqued, as indicated by Darren Fletcher’s comments on Sky Sports in October: “His performances get scrutinised to the level where it is a little bit unfair. If you look at the stats over a season – goals, assists, chances created, passes – he is Manchester United’s most dominant and influential player.”

Therefore, whoever is recognised as the World Cup winner’s successor in a United shirt, whenever he leaves Old Trafford, could also come under huge pressure.

Fred endured a tough start to life at Man United, as he only managed 13 Premier League starts during his maiden campaign, partaking in no more than four games in a row.

Things have already improved for him this campaign due to the aforementioned run of the games, but it is perhaps a bit much to suggest he could fill the void of somebody of Pogba’s quality – especially with his return of 27 goal contributions last season.

Even without this added pressure, there are still those with reservations about Fred, as Charlie Nicholas said last month while speaking on Sky Sports, via The Metro: “Their [United’s] midfield cannot keep the ball. Scott McTominay and Fred are grafting but they cannot pass the ball.”

So while it is encouraging to see Fred improving, he should be allowed to get himself up to his own top level for now, rather than being considered for bigger roles in the team.

وعلق محمد سراج عضو مجلس إدارة الأهلي، على وضع حجر الأساس لاستاد الأهلي، قائلًا: “هو حلم كبير من سنوات، واسطتعنا تحقيقه”.

وأكمل: “الصعوبات كانت الحصول على الموافقات، اسم النادي الأهلي له هوية مختلفة، ولدينا كل ما يميزنا”.

The Italian has started just 3 Premier League games this season, while he has played from the start in just 8 matches in all competitions – from his total of 19 appearances, he has managed 2 goals and 4 assists so far.

He managed to score the same amount of goals in one outing for Italy U21s against Iceland on Saturday.

Many of the club’s fans were delighted for the 21-year-old to get a brace for his country, hoping the confidence boost from it can be taken back to Molineux.

He has tough competition for places in the team, as Raul Jimenez has 16 goal contributions in all competitions this season, while Diogo Jota has 9.

However, having come out of the international game with a brace, he should have the boost needed to push on.

وتحدث موكوينا عن مباراة الأهلي في تصريحات نقلتها صحيفة “Kick Off” في جنوب إفريقيا، وقال: “نعد أنفسنا محظوظين لأن لدينا هذا الضغط لأن هذا النوع من الضغط يجعلنا ضمن أفضل الأندية في القارة ونجيد التعامل معه ونظهر من خلاله قدرتنا على المنافسة وهدفنا هو الوصول إلى نصف نهائي دوري أبطال إفريقيا”.

وتابع: “نلعب في كل منافسة لدينا هذا الموسم على الفوز، هدفنا هو النجاح في دوري أبطال إفريقيا ولكن نسبة العبور إلى نصف النهائي متساوية مع الأهلي 50% وهي ليست كافية لنتأهل حتى الآن للمرحلة المقبلة”.

Although former Aston Villa manager Steve Bruce’s time in B6 ended in somewhat acrimonious circumstances – with a cabbage being thrown at the 58-year-old prior to his sacking – the current Newcastle boss has been reflecting on his time with the West Midlands outfit.

What did he say?

Speaking ahead of the clash between his current and former employers, Bruce (via Birmingham Live) said:

“I feel I should have got longer. The team that got up is the team we practically put together. New owners came in, it’s a different ball game now. Without them Villa would be in a real dark place.”

Did Bruce deserve more time at Villa?

Having spent just under two years with at the club whilst managing over 90 league games, Bruce’s achievement in taking Villa to the play-off final – despite defeat to Fulham – was an impressive feat.

Villa lost to a better side at Wembley in 2018 – with Slaviša Jokanović’s men displaying considerably more consistency over the course of the season to clinch five more points – but the decline that proceeded meant that Bruce’s sacking was more than justified from the club’s hierarchy. At the time, Villa were 13th and had managed to win only three of 11 Championship games.

And while he claims the promotion team was the one he forged, Villa’s rise to the top six was built upon a vastly improved defence which hinged on the January arrivals of Tyrone Mings and Kortney Hause on loan – both being so fundamental to promotion that they were signed permanently during the summer.

Villa finished the season with a run of five clean sheets in the final twelve games, while Smith also oversaw a run of ten consecutive victories; Bruce’s longest winning run that season was a mere two games.

There has been speculation surrounding the future of Eddie Nketiah recently, with some fans beginning to worry that Arsenal may be planning to recall him in January.

The striker is still yet to start a league game for the Whites and given he has been underused, and is now set for a spell on the sidelines through injury, many believe his parent club will make the decision to take him away from Leeds.
