Brett Pitman is loving life at Portsmouth as they attempt to win promotion to the Championship this season, per The News.

What’s the word?

Pompey are in fine form, beating Coventry City 2-1 at the weekend, their seventh successive victory in the league.

They are currently third in the League One table, two points behind second-placed Barnsley, but they have a game in hand on the Tykes.

Pompey face a massive game this weekend against Sunderland who are fourth, just two points further back, before taking on Peterborough and Accrington Stanley.

Winning all three games would see Kenny Jackett’s men promoted automatically and Pitman, who helped AFC Bournemouth win promotion to the Championship in 2012-13 after a run of eight successive victories, is relishing the pressure.

He said: “At Bournemouth, when we went up from League One we won eight in a row – then drew the final game when we already had promotion.

“It’s one of those when you just ride the wave and enjoy it.

“Some people might feel pressure, I don’t really feel the pressure, this is what you want to be, you don’t want to be mid-table with nothing to play for. You want to enjoy this time.”

He added: “Of course next week is a massive game, we are under no illusions, we know that, but it’s a massive game for Sunderland too.

“At this stage of the season, if you have something to play for then they are all big games, whoever you play.

“Sunderland’s going to be a tough game, but it’s in our own hands now.”

Exactly what fans want to hear

This will be music to the ears of every single Portsmouth fan.

Most Pompey supporters surely have no fingernails left, such has been their run of form this season.

Three wins stand between the club and the Championship and Pitman’s insistence that he does not feel nerves is exactly what the club needs.

In the club’s last eight games, he has scored six goals.

If he keeps that form up, Pompey may well take those vital nine points from a possible nine.

Izzy Brown is injured. Water is wet. The two phrases have been as consistent as each other throughout this season for Leeds fans. His latest setback surely all but confirms that he will never play for the Whites again as his loan spell nears its end.

Another setback

Brown suffered a horror injury during his loan spell with Brighton last season as he tore his ACL in January meaning that he would miss almost a year of action.

Despite his ongoing injury problems Leeds wanted to take a punt on the Chelsea man for this season. Their gamble has backfired horribly as the midfielder has appeared just once since joining the club last summer.

A hamstring injury followed which saw him miss another three months of action and since then he has been resigned to playing for the Under 23’s in a bid to get back his match fitness.

Numerous small knocks have seen his return delayed and his latest injury all but confirms he will not appear again this season.

A fitting end

Unfortunately, the latest update on the Chelsea loanees fitness is a story that Leeds fans have heard all too often.

The 22-year-old was brought in having been a vital member of the Huddersfield squad that was promoted in 2017 and, as well as enjoying a solid half a season at Brighton in the Premier League.

Under different circumstances, Brown could have been a key player for Marcelo Bielsa and perhaps could’ve been the difference between the playoffs and automatic promotion.

It has been an absolute waste of a year for both parties and if the former England U20 international’s problems continue you have to ask what it means for the course of his career.

The youngster is clearly a very talented player but his time at Elland Road can only be described as a nightmare, as the Whites haven’t been able to use the attacking midfielder at all this season. It seems his career at the Yorkshire club will finish as it started, on the treatment table.

Dele Alli looked somewhere close to his electric best last night.

The Tottenham Hotspur midfielder turned in a superb performance on Wednesday as Spurs improbably reached the Champions League final, turning around a three-goal deficit and going through on away goals against Ajax.

Lucas Moura grabbed the headlines with a sensational hat-trick on the night but Alli’s contribution cannot be understated.

The England international, per WhoScored, touched the ball 57 times, completed two dribbles and also laid on four key passes, with two assists, taking his tally to eight for the season in all-competitions.

One of those was proof that the 23-year-old has returned to the swaggering form that saw him prove so effective in the World Cup and in seasons prior.

With the clock ticking down and Spurs seemingly heading out of the competition, Alli tried an impudent flick. He had absolutely no right to be so brazen in the final minute of a semi-final in Europe’s elite club competition but it found its way to Lucas, who sent a low drive beyond Andre Onana.

Spurs, all of a sudden, were in a Champions League final, with Alli playing a key role.

The big-game player

Alli has endured a serious dip in form this season but he remains one of Spurs’ most integral players, particularly in big games.

This was a telling reminder to Mauricio Pochettino and his healthy contingent of doubters that he possesses the mentality to summon his wizardry on the biggest stage. It was a performance which vindicated his £90 million Transfermarkt valuation in a season which has prompted plenty of sceptics to doubt the extent of his ability.

Indeed, perhaps his best performance of the season prior to the clash with Ajax came against Chelsea in the Premier League, where he laid on an assist and scored in a 3-1 victory at Wembley.

Still young and still to hit his peak, Alli’s return to form will be excellent news for his manager.

Spurs, after all, still need to confirm their finish in the top four and, of course, they also face a Champions League final now, on June 1, against Liverpool.

With Alli in excellent form, they have every chance of being called European champions.

Another compelling layer has been added to the narrative of this unlikely prodigy.

It has been a truly awful month to be a Leeds United supporter, hasn’t it?

After missing out on automatic promotion to the Premier League to Sheffield United following an awful run of four games without a win in the Championship, the Whites were consigned to the lottery of the play-offs.

Although Leeds would have been confident of overcoming their semi-final opponents Derby County having beaten them twice already during the 2018/19 campaign, they knew that if they did not perform well over two-legs, their dreams of top-flight football next season would be dashed.

Despite delivering the perfect away performance at Pride Park on Saturday by securing a 1-0 victory courtesy of a Kemar Roofe goal, the Whites’ hard work was undone last night as they capitulated at Elland Road.

With Marcelo Bielsa’s side unable to deal with Derby’s fearsome attack, they conceded four goals at home which resulted in them being eliminated from the play-offs.

Having appeared as a substitute during Wednesday’s clash, it is not entirely beyond the realms of possibility that Jack Clarke may have made his final bow for Leeds.

An outstanding talent, the 18-year-old’s superb performances throughout the campaign saw him win the club’s Young Player of the Year award, yet it wouldn’t be at all surprising if he leaves for the Premier League this summer.

According to the Daily Star, Clarke could be a target for the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City and Liverpool who may spark a bidding war when the transfer window opens in July.

If this is indeed the case, the Whites may struggle to convince the winger to stay for another season in the second tier as the lure of playing in the Champions League is a proposition that not many players would turn down.

A number of Tottenham Hotspur fans are desperate for their team to avoid a move for Barcelona attacker Malcom in this summer’s transfer window.

Spanish publication Sport have claimed that Borussia Dortmund want to sign Malcom ahead of the 2019-2020 campaign.

However, the same report has said that Tottenham’s interest ‘is known’.

The 22-year-old arrived at Barcelona last summer off the back of a 12-goal season with Bordeaux.

It would be fair to say that the winger has struggled to make his mark at Camp Nou, though, scoring just once in 15 La Liga appearances.

Malcom has been handed the chance to impress in recent weeks with Ousmane Dembele and Luis Suarez both on the sidelines.

However, the Brazilian has found it really difficult to contribute.

It remains to be seen whether Tottenham make a move, but it seems that the majority of the English club’s fans do not want the attacker.
