Arsenal fans react as Danny Welbeck scores a brace against Brentford

[ad_pod ]

Arsenal fans were impressed with another good performance by Danny Welbeck on Wednesday evening as the Gunners beat Brenford 3-1 at the Emirates Stadium in the Carabao Cup third round.

Welbeck opened the scoring in the fifth minute, heading home a cross by Matteo Guendouzi to give Arsenal the lead.

The 27-year-old then rounded off a superb team goal by the home side in the 37th minute that saw fine interplay and quick passing between Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Alex Iwobi and Nacho Monreal, who set Welbeck up to finish as Arsenal went into the break with a 2-0 lead.

Brentford however did strike back with a goal of their own in the second half, but substitute Alexandre Lacazette made sure of the result in stoppage-time.

The two goals on Wednesday evening took Welbeck’s tally for the season up to four and he also became the first player to score in three different competitions this season, following his Premier League and Europa League goals against West Ham United and Vorskla respectively.

Here are some of the Twitter reactions by Arsenal fans:

Moving for Andrea Belotti would give Chelsea an instant Morata upgrade

Chelsea are looking good this season, but Maurizio Sarri is still facing one major problem – and it involves his strikers. Neither Olivier Giroud or Alvaro Morata have hit the ground running yet this season, with both failing to impress in the English top flight.

Given how reliant Maurizio Sarri is on good attacking play, that’s a major problem for the club. If his forwards can’t score, that puts more emphasis on the players around them to do just that; and that prevents them from focusing on creating play – which is typically what they do best.

The Blues, then, will never be able to dominate as intended without a top class forward, and it’s clear at this point that Alvaro Morata is simply not what they need.

However, Andrea Belotti, who is rated at £34.2 million by Transfer Markt, just might be.

What Chelsea need is a forward that is guaranteed to score goals, and Belotti’s record over the last few years has been stellar. His real emergence began in the 2015/16 season, when he bagged 12 goals in just over 30 league starts – a modest return. He blew that record out of the water a year later, bagging a stunning 26 league goals. Indeed, he’s scored close to 50 league goals so far in his career – and he’s only 24-years-old.

It’s worth noting, of course, that he’s also done all this whilst playing for Torino – a team that certainly isn’t amongst Europe’s best. If he were surrounded by the likes of Eden Hazard and Willian, you’d expect his record to only improve. Morata gets more service than most, but he continually fails to put the ball in the back of the net, and so a forward with a good conversion rate is what Chelsea need.

Offering fantastic energy, pace and technique, not to mention goalscoring, Belotti would be able to offer everything and more in contrast to Morata – and for Chelsea, that’s the number one priority as far as improvements are concerned.

HYS: How much is Leeds United star Samu Saiz worth?

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United took something of a risk when they paid £3m for Samu Saiz in the summer of 2017 given he had never played outside of Spain throughout his entire career.

An impressive campaign with Huesca persuaded director of football Victor Orta to part with the cash though, and the 27-year-old has certainly gone on to be one of his biggest successes in the transfer market from a personal viewpoint.

The attacking midfielder hit the ground running under Thomas Christiansen last term, but a six-match suspension following a red card for spitting in January of this year was the catalyst of him losing his form throughout the rest of a tough campaign under previous boss Paul Heckingbotton.

The Spaniard looks to be back to his best working with new manager Marcelo Bielsa however, with the Argentine chief’s style of play being perfectly suited to the technical abilities of Saiz.

He has one goal and two assists in 13 appearances in all competitions so far for the Yorkshire club this term, but those stats perhaps don’t tell the story of just how much of an attacking influence he has been for the Championship table-toppers.

Given he should be approaching or perhaps already in the prime years of his career – and given the quality he clearly has both on and off the ball – there is no reason why the 27-year-old bargain buy isn’t worth at least £20m now.

Do you agree, Leeds fans? Let us know how much you think Saiz should be valued at by voting on our poll below…

Arsenal fans react to Thierry Henry’s appointment at Monaco

[ad_pod ]

Thierry Henry has been appointed as the new Monaco manager on a three-year contract, running until 2021, as reported by the BBC.

The position shall be the 41-year-old’s first experience of being a head coach, having previously been the assistant manager of the Belgium national team.

The former Arsenal striker will replace Leonardo Jardim at the principality club. The previous manager, who won a league title for the club in 2017, was sacked by the Ligue 1 outfit with the side floundering in 18th place in the table after a dreadful start to the new campaign.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”305269″ player=”12034″ title=”Are Emery’s Arsenal Silently Gunning For The Title”]

Whilst there is plenty of optimism surrounding Henry’s arrival at the Stade Louis II, his appointment certainly represents a risk on the club’s part given the Frenchman’s lack of experience.

He will, of course, gain lots of experience in the course of his new job. Plenty of Arsenal fans are already predicting that said experience could set him up to take over at the Emirates Stadium in the future, where he remains a legend from his playing days.

After the announcement of Henry’s employment, plenty of Gunners fans took to Twitter to congratulate their iconic old No. 14.

Opinion: Wolves should reignite interest in Divock Origi

[ad_pod ]

According to ESPN FC, Wolves had agreed a £22m deal in the summer for out-of-favour Reds striker Divock Origi before the player turned down the move. Everton are reportedly preparing a January bid but Nuno Espirito Santo should fight to bring him to the Molineux instead.

What’s the story?

The Belgian hasn’t played a single minute under boss Jurgen Klopp so far this campaign after returning from his loan at Bundesliga outfit Wolfsburg in the summer.

The versatile forward made 31 appearances for Die Wolfe in the 17/18 season, scoring six goals and assisting a further two but didn’t exactly set the league alight and has slipped further down the pecking order at Anfield since the arrival of Xherdan Shaqiri from Stoke.

Still only 23, Origi has plenty of time to improve his game and is absolutely good enough for the top flight, having contributed to 17 goals for the Merseyside club in 50 Premier League appearances since the 16/17 season.

Wolves are a club with clear intentions of improving and developing themselves. The signings of Portuguese internationals Rui Patricio and Joao Moutinho in the summer highlighted the Midlands side’s ambitions and the pull of the project that is going on.

Considering Wolves’ stellar start to the campaign, Origi may have to rethink his original decision to reject the Black Country side.

Why Wolves should try again

Arguably, it is Wolves’ defensive form rather than their attacking prowess that has seen them rise to eighth in the Premier League standings. They have kept four clean sheets from eight games played leading to some calling for captain Connor Coady to be included in the Three Lions’ UEFA Nations League squad.

Mexican striker Raul Jimenez is the current first choice option up front and has had a direct hand in 56% of the Molineux outfit’s goals (two goals and three assists), but has at times been wasteful. The Premier League calculates that he has missed seven big chances, the joint-second most in the league.

Backup Leo Bonatini has worked hard but has looked out of his depth in his five substitute appearances and hasn’t yet got a goal to his name. Additionally, former Athletico Madrid winger Diogo Jota has looked a shadow of the player he was last season in the Championship and has recorded neither a goal or an assist so far.

Origi, valued at £9m by Transfermarkt, could slot in at any point across Nuno’s front three and would provide competition for Jimenez or perhaps bench Jota if the former Lille man is preferred out wide.

If Wolves want to cement a top half finish, they need to be able to rely on each and every player on the pitch and the bench and moving for a player who is still young but has experience in three different major leagues would be a smart swoop.

Review so far: Pellegrini must regret selling Kouyate

West Ham had an incredibly tough start to the season as the Hammers were handed games against Liverpool and Arsenal to start.

After a summer which saw the squad change massively while the club also brought in a new manager in Manuel Pellegrini, it was always going to take time for the squad to begin to play well and start to gather points.

Although the Hammers recently lost to Brighton and Tottenham, before those losses, Pellegrini’s side had beaten Man U and Everton while holding Chelsea to a 0-0 draw.

In terms of the squad depth, with Pellegrini adopting to a three-man midfield, West Ham need a good batch of midfielders who can step in.

The former Man City boss signed Carlos Sanchez over the summer while also adding Jack Wilshere but in truth, neither are great fits. Wilshere is incredibly injury prone and is at his best in the number 10 role, a position that Pellegrini has shifted away from. While Sanchez just isn’t a good player.

Declan Rice has bee outstanding at the base of midfield with Mark Noble and Pedro Obiang playing alongside him but outside of the young midfielder, West Ham don’t really have an adequate player to step in.

One player they sold who could’ve provided not just depth but also quality, is not Crystal Palace midfielder, Cheikhou Kouyate. Rated at £9 million, the tall midfielder could’ve played at the base of midfield or even alongside Rice in a 4-3-3. He can get forward well and is also a solid physical presence at the back.

Although Pellegrini is taking West Ham into a new era, it might have been wise to keep the Senegal international.

Review: Jack Ross must be regretting letting Asoro leave

It was a summer of change for Sunderland as not only did the club come under new ownership but also brought in a new manager following their second successive relegation.

Add the arrival of Stewart Donald and Jack Ross to the amount of new players that joined the club, and you would’ve thought that it was going to be a summer of rebuilding and redevelopment leading to possible contention for the playoffs.

Refreshingly for the fans, they’ve had a brilliant start to the season and in combination with Peterborough and Portsmouth, Sunderland have been one of the best sides in the league. Such has been their superb form, that they look like they have a chance of winning the league and securing automatic promotion back into the Championship.

Going forward Sunderland have played incredibly well but are incredibly reliant on youth product Josh Maja. The striker has scored nine goals in 13 games this season with Lynden Gooch, Chris Maguire and Lee Cattermole the next highest scorers with three each.

Over the summer, the club sold Joel Asoro to Swansea. The 19-year-old was in the last year of his contract and although he was in the last year of his contract, like Maja, Ross should’ve kept the youngster.

The Sweden under-21 international didn’t score many goals in the Championship last year but he still showed plenty of promise and in tandem with Maja, he could have formed a potent duo. A duo that might have just secured Sunderland’s promotion back into the Championship.

The Chalkboard: Gerrard must make bold midfield changes to get Rangers firing again

[ad_pod ]

Rangers have lost their way in an attacking sense over the last couple of weeks, so what can Steven Gerrard do to get the Gers firing again?

The Chalkboard

Rangers travel to St Mirren on Saturday having scored just once in their last three matches in all competitions.

What is most infuriating for fans is that they have actually dominated large parts of all three of those games, but are just missing that final piece of quality.

Gerrard warned players earlier this week that he will spend in January if the end product does not improve, but there are some changes he can make immediately to give his side some extra spark.

A new role for Kent

Ryan Kent has been nothing short of exceptional since joining on loan from Liverpool. The tricky winger took a few games to hit his stride, but since then has arguably been the player of the season so far.

The 21-year-old just looked a step off the pace during the draw at Kilmarnock, mainly because he wasn’t getting enough service. This is why Gerrard should move him to a central position, where his pace, directness and skill will draw defenders out of position.

Playing Kent as a “number ten” will wreak havoc against St Mirren, create more space for the likes of Daniel Candeias and Alfredo Morelos, and also allow the gaffer to start Glenn Middleton on the left wing.

The return of McCrorie

Of course, playing Kent in the middle does make the Gers more vulnerable defensively. The return of Ross McCrorie would fix this, as the 20-year-old colossus has absolutely no instinct to get forward.

Lassana Coulibaly has been poor in the last few weeks, and the 6ft 3in McCrorie deserves a chance to show Gerrard what he can do. The youngster has come under some controversy due his inability to avoid the referee’s notebook, but he can use his physicality and hunger to absolutely dominate St Mirren’s midfield.

So, Rangers fans, would you like to see Kent and Middleton start together? Should McCrorie get the nod? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below…

Liverpool fans excited by Keita’s return to fitness

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool fans were very excited for Naby Keita to touch down in Merseyside this summer, a year after he agreed to join the club.

The box-to-box midfielder spent the 2017-18 season playing his final campaign for RB Leipzig.

Keita showed his quality in pre-season and carried that into his first few competitive appearances for Liverpool.

However, he struggled for consistency and has been forced to miss the club’s last four games with a hamstring injury.

Liverpool will take on Champions League opponents Red Star Belgrade in Serbia this evening, and there is a chance that Keita will make an appearance.

Even though his recent performances have been questionable, plenty of supporters are confident that he will be a key player under Klopp.

A few expressed their excitement for the midfielder’s return during a discussion on Reddit.

Opinion: Charlton should sign George Dobson as a long-term replacement for Pratley

[ad_pod ]

Charlton signed 33-year-old Darren Pratley on his release from Bolton Wanderers in the summer, but boss Lee Bowyer should now consider a January move for Walsall’s George Dobson as a long-term solution in holding midfield.

What’s the situation?

Charlton are currently sat in sixth in League One having won eight, drawn four and lost five of their first 17 games of the campaign so far. Their last outing in the league was actually a trip to Dobson’s Walsall where they came away with the three points thanks to goals from Lyle Taylor and Krystian Bielik in a 2-0 victory.

Summer signing Pratley has been a success for Bowyer, playing in 12 matches in all competitions in a defensive midfield role that offers his back four protection and the midfield two in front of him license to get further forward.

However, the former Fulham and Swansea man isn’t getting any younger and when he doesn’t play Bowyer is often forced to change the formation. Signing Dobson then should be a priority as it would avoid the need for this and he could slot straight into the side.

Long-term move

Dobson began his youth career with Arsenal before moving to West Ham in 2015. From there he spent the 2016/17 season on loan with his current club Walsall, but the now 20-year-old only signed for The Saddlers on a permanent deal after a brief spell with Dutch side Sparta Rotterdam.

This term, the young Englishman has played every minute of Walsall’s League One campaign and has even captained the side in all but one game despite his young age, proving that he is highly thought of at his current club.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”327140″ player=”12034″ title=”Rafa’s Pub Facts Leicester Trump Man City Chelsea & Liverpool”]

If Charlton’s owners are willing to dip into their pockets in January then Dobson could be a fantastic investment for the future and would help the Addicks with their push for promotion back to the Championship. So, Charlton fans, would you support a January move for Dobson?
