De Gea is one of the world’s best – but he still flatters to deceive

In the eyes of many, David De Gea is the greatest goalkeeper in the world. In the eyes of even more, he’s the best shot-stopper, if not the best all-rounder. But because of that latter description, there is an argument to suggest the Manchester United star flatters to deceive.

That’s not to say the 26-year-old isn’t clearly a supremely talented goalkeeper. He’s Manchester United and Spain’s No.1 for a reason and the journey his development has taken since first arriving at Old Trafford as a scrawny, lanky glovesman has been nothing short of metamorphic. A timid presence in the box whose unconventional technique of saving with his feet created unease has become the most calming and dependable influence in United’s defensive third – not to mention their Player of the Year for three of last four seasons.

Yet, De Gea is by no means infallible. From the start of the 2015/16 campaign he’s committed four defensive errors, three leading to goals, and while that may seem a miserly total for any goalkeeper – let alone one who makes as many saves as the Spaniard – it’s a reminder that he’s not the perfect ‘keeper we often imagine. In fact, back in December 2016, De Gea had actually let in one goal more than expected in the first half of last season according to Opta. Once again, not a gigantic margin, but not a margin you’d expect from a goalkeeper held in such universally high esteem either.

In many ways, that epitomises the argument of De Gea being overrated. You’ll hardly hear a bad word said about him from pundits, journalists and analysers, and he’s allowed to get away with mistakes that other goalkeepers – like Liverpool’s Simon Mignolet, for example – aren’t. There is a very good reason for that; it’s hard to criticise a goalkeeper who makes so many impressive saves, that clearly outweigh his number of mistakes. But that shouldn’t take away from the fact there are weaknesses in De Gea’s game too, and that he commits costly errors as well.

When you’re talking about the absolute elite level, those weaknesses and errors must be scrutinised  – especially for a position that hinges on consistency. But there’s another element to the overrated argument which explains why he’s perhaps protected from criticism more than most Premier League goalkeepers. Blessed with incredible agility, speed and reflexes, De Gea’s an incredibly aesthetic goalkeeper, one the fans love to watch and the cameras love to film.

But that doesn’t necessarily mean the saves he pulls off are significantly greater than those of his contemporaries. Petr Cech is one of the greatest goalkeepers in Premier League history, if not the greatest, yet sightings of the Arsenal No.1 hurling his body to the farthest corners of his goal in the style we associate with De Gea have been exceptionally rare down the years. Instead, the Czech international has relied on sheer size, anticipation and positioning to be in the right place at the right time. It’s less glamorous and eye-catching, but doesn’t mean it’s been any less effective.

And when compared to some of the best goalkeepers in Europe at this moment in time, the idea of style leading substance in appreciation of the United ace truly starts to stand out. Of course, De Gea plies his trade in the most competitive league as part of a United side that haven’t dominated domestically anywhere near the extent of Bayern Munich or Juventus in recent years. Since 2013, the Red Devils have endured a period of almost relentless upheaval and it’s a credit to De Gea that he’s continued to deliver consistently.

However, since the start of 2015/16 in Europe and the top flight, he’s conceded more goals per match than Manuel Neuer, Gianluigi Buffon and Jan Oblak by a notable distance, while averaging less clean sheets and perhaps most pivotally of all, less saves per goal. The statistics don’t tell us how challenging those saves are, but his return is more than one save less than Oblak’s – quite a difference in the grand scheme of European goalkeeping.

Once again, there’s no dispute De Gea is one of the world’s very best goalkeepers, belonging in the uttermost bracket. But sometimes, his natural ability to entertain blurs our ability to evaluate how effective a goalkeeper he truly is – making him stand out simply because other goalkeepers go about their business in a less stylistic fashion. The real De Gea is something slightly less than we often imagine.

Harry Redknapp reveals which Irons legend helped him almost sign Eden Hazard

Things may have panned out incredibly differently had Tottenham Hotspur sealed the services of Eden Hazard. Since moving to the Premier League in summer 2012, the Belgium international has steadily established himself as arguably the division’s flagship talent, helping inspire Chelsea to two titles during that time.

But former Spurs boss Harry Redknapp has revealed he was once very close to bringing the attacking midfielder to White Hart Lane instead, in a deal that may well have instantaneously propelled the Lilywhites to the title-chasing status they enjoy today – especially considering talents like Luka Modric and Gareth Bale were still at the club when he was chasing Hazard.

And even more ironically, it was a West Ham legend who put Redknapp on the track of signing Hazard during his days in Ligue 1 for the east London outfit’s bitter rivals. To find out which Hammers hero it was, watch the short video below…

Man United fans slam Ander Herrera after Basel defeat

Manchester United failed to get the draw they needed to advance to the knockout stages of the Champions League after they were beaten 1-0 by FC Basel on Wednesday night, and Red Devils fans weren’t impressed with Ander Herrera’s performance.

Jose Mourinho’s men knew that a point would be enough to guarantee their spot in the last 16, and they looked set to get it before Michael Lang’s 89th-minute goal for the hosts.

Anything less than a seven-goal defeat to CSKA Moscow on the final matchday will still be enough to see them progress, but the likes of Herrera may fear for their places in the team following the showing in Switzerland.

The Spaniard lined up alongside Paul Pogba and Marouane Fellaini in the middle of the park, but he struggled with his passing and failed to make a real impact on the game.

Man United supporters were quick to have their say on his display via social media, and while one said he is “a shadow of his former self”, another said it’s the “worst I’ve ever seen Herrera play”.

Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…

In Focus: Man United target Cristante could be the ideal Fellaini replacement

According to reports in The Sun, Manchester United are in pole position to land Atalanta midfielder and Juventus, Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid target Bryan Cristante in a £31m deal next summer, as they look for a replacement for Marouane Fellaini.

What’s the word, then?

Well, The Sun says that Fellaini looks set to leave Old Trafford after rejecting the club’s latest contract offer, and Jose Mourinho has already started the search for the Belgium international’s replacement.

Cristante is on loan at Atalanta from Benfica, but The Sun says the Italian outfit have the option to sign the 22-year-old on a permanent basis for £10m at the end of the season.

That is something they are likely to do considering some of the midfielder’s impressive performances for them this term, but they could then choose to sell him on for an even bigger fee during the summer transfer window.

The Sun adds that Juventus, Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid won’t pay the £31m that Atalanta are likely to demand for the Italian, which could leave the Red Devils in pole position to land him.

How has Cristante done this season?

The midfielder has scored an impressive eight goals in 17 appearances in all competitions fro Atalanta, having featured in both central and central attacking midfield roles.

Two of those eight goals came in the 5-1 Europa League win against Everton at Goodison Park last week, where the 22-year-old played in a more advanced role.

Would he be a good Fellaini replacement?

With five goals scored and 10 chances created in 13 Serie A appearances this season Cristante certainly looks as though he can make a difference in the final third, but of course we have seen that Fellaini is also so useful defensively for United since Mourinho took charge.

Standing at 6ft 1in tall the 22-year-old doesn’t quite have the height and physical presence that the Belgian does, but according to Squawka he has shown his strength in the air by winning 20 of the 31 aerial duels he has faced in the Italian top flight this term.

He has also made 13 interceptions and five blocks, to show that he can be effective from a defensive point of view as well.

What’s the verdict, then?

Well, it won’t be easy to find someone exactly like Fellaini and Cristante certainly looks to have the potential to go on and become a top player, and perhaps he deserves that chance at Old Trafford.

Arsenal should swoop to beat Chelsea to Golovin once Jorginho deal is done

Juventus have moved ahead of Chelsea and Arsenal in the race to sign Russian World Cup hero Aleksandr Golovin, rated at £16.2m by Transfermarkt, from CSKA Moscow, according to Italian outlet TuttoSport.

What’s the story, then?

The report claims that the Russian midfielder has become more keen to join the Italian champions after they secured the signing of Cristiano Ronaldo and that has moved them ahead of the London duo.

However, they say that Golovin’s will is not the only key factor and that CSKA want 10m euros more than they are currently being offered by Juve.

That should reportedly serve to keep Arsenal’s hopes alive, with Chelsea otherwise engaged with their pursuit of Napoli playmaker Jorginho.

[ad_pod ]

Arsenal must take advantage

As mentioned, Chelsea have their eye off the ball as they focus on another midfield target in Jorginho, which may also make Golovin think twice in terms of the gametime he could get at Stamford Bridge.

Meanwhile, Ronaldo’s transfer may have increased Golovin’s desire to join Juventus but it will also have taken a huge chunk out of the budget, to the extent that even Arsenal – lacking Champions League football – can compete in the race financially.

That should open the door for Unai Emery to pounce and if he does, he will be acting more decisively than Arsene Wenger often did.

Everton eye summer swoop for Laxalt

According to The Sun, Everton are interested in signing Genoa midfielder Diego Laxalt in this summer’s transfer window.

What’s the story?

Everton are yet to sign any new players this summer, but Toffees boss Marco Silva said over the weekend that he was confident when it came to new additions.

According to The Sun, a player high on the club’s wishlist this summer is Genoa’s Laxalt, who impressed for Uruguay at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Bournemouth are also believed to be interested in signing the 25-year-old, but Everton would fancy their chances of winning any race that might occur with the Cherries.

The left side of the field has been a problem for Everton for some time, and it is not a surprise that Laxalt is being considered due to his versatility.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”271323″ player=”12034″ title=”Cristiano Ronaldo to Juventus on Football Manager”]

The report claims that Genoa would be prepared to sell the South American for £18m this summer, and Everton would have no problems meeting that price.

What are Laxalt’s credentials?

Laxalt, who has a contract with Genoa until 2022, scored three times and registered three assists in 32 Serie A appearances during the 2017-18 campaign.

The left-sided ace actually came through the youth system at Uruguayan outfit Defensor Sporting before joining Inter Milan in 2013.

Laxalt never made an appearance for the San Siro giants, however, and spent the 2015-16 season on loan at Genoa before completing a permanent move in the summer of 2016.

Laxalt made four appearances for Uruguay at the 2018 World Cup, and actually played at left-back in three of those matches. That said, the vast majority of his football last season came in the left midfield position.

His versatility will be a huge attraction for Everton boss Silva, and securing the services of the highly-energetic, intelligent and all-action South American would be some coup.

Leighton Baines has been strongly linked with a move away from Goodison Park this summer, and Everton could have the perfect replacement lined up.

Liverpool fans buzzing about Brewster committing his future to Anfield

Nowadays most Premier League clubs spend big money on ready-made talent, which makes it harder for youth players to find a way through.

However, when a star is spotted among the inexperienced crowd, it is vital for clubs to hold on, and that is exactly what Liverpool have done with Rhian Brewster.

The 18-year-old striker joined the Merseyside outfit’s academy from Chelsea in 2014 and has gone from strength to strength.

The youngster caught the eye last year while representing England at the Under-17 World Cup as he nabbed the Golden Boot with eight goals and also took home a winners’ medal.

There were rumblings in the early stages of last season that Brewster could earn his first-team debut under Jurgen Klopp, but an ankle injury in January ruled him out for the rest of the campaign.

The teenager has now decided to commit his future to the Reds by signing a long-term contract, and the fans could not be happier.

Bolasie’s directness down the flanks could vastly improve Newcastle United’s attack

Newcastle United should keep close tabs on Everton winger Yannick Bolasie following The Mirror’s claim that he could be available for £15m.

What’s the word?

Rafael Benitez is once again being frustrated in the transfer window as Newcastle club owner Mike Ashley is yet to release significant funds.

The North-East outfit have been linked to numerous talent, but so far they have had to settle for loans and free transfers.

A problem that the Magpies have had for some time is the lack of threat down the flanks, but they could potentially solve this problem with a move for Bolasie.

The Mirror claims that Everton value the 29-year-old at £15m, which in today’s market is very affordable, but it is a different story where Newcastle are concerned.

What would Bolasie bring?

If the cash is there for a move, then the Magpies could potentially be getting a player that will add freshness and zest to the wide areas.

The Congo international, who is valued at £16.2m by Transfermarkt, has plenty of pace and confidence.

Bolasie will take players on in the final third, and could produce service to Newcastle’s forward stars.

With Kenedy at the club once again on loan, the Brazilian is likely going to occupy the left side, but Bolasie can play on the right.

In fact, the attack-minded star is also capable of playing up front if necessary.

Celtic’s Forrest still has plenty to offer and Rodgers should grant his contract wishes

Celtic winger James Forrest has just one year left on his current deal at Parkhead but has stated that he wants to remain at the club until the end of his career, according to the Sun.

What’s the story, then?

The report says that 27-year-old Forrest has been at the club since he was nine and he has expressed his desire to remain for as long as he possibly can.

He is quoted saying that he appreciates being at the club more and more as he gets older and wants to extend his current deal as he feels he can contribute with goals and assists.

Forrest netted 17 goals in all competitions last season and Patrick Roberts’ return to Manchester City has served to intensify the pressure on Rodgers’ other attacking players to take up the goalscoring burden.

Forrest can make up the Roberts’ shortfall

Forrest is a player who loves Celtic, with the best years of his career ahead of him and is coming off the back of a fruitful season in front of goal – there is no reason Rodgers shouldn’t meet his demands.

With Roberts’ return to England and failing to land Liverpool starlet Harry Wilson – who ended up at Derby – Rodgers needs a boost in creativity from somewhere and Forrest can fill the breach.

Every squad needs characters like Forrest and players who love the club are invaluable in the modern era to bridge the gap between the squad and the fans.

Liverpool should have gone for Bonucci prior to his Juventus return

On Thursday, Juventus re-signed Leonardo Bonucci just one year after selling him to AC Milan, but Liverpool should have tried to scupper the deal.

What’s the word?

Bonucci recently made the controversial decision to return to Turin despite having four years left on his contract at the San Siro.

The Italy international’s desire to leave should have been picked up by Liverpool, even though it seems that the club have not been actively pursuing a new defender.

Virgil van Dijk has significantly improved the back line in Jurgen Klopp’s team thanks to his confidence and leadership skills.

Bonucci, who is valued at £31.5m by Transfermarkt, is edging towards the latter stages of his career at the age of 31, but he is still a world-class defender.

He and Van Dijk could have formed a solid partnership that would have worried attacking opponents.

However, it looks as though the Dutchman will be marshalling the defence alongside Dejan Lovren this season.

Is the defence still a concern?

The back line has been a weakness for Liverpool over the las few seasons, but things are starting to change.

The Merseyside outfit now have the most expensive centre-back and goalkeeper in the world, therefore there are no excuses for poor performances.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”273048″ player=”12034″ title=”Has Klopp just cranked up the pressure on himself”]

However, there is still some doubt over Lovren’s ability as he has struggled for consistency since his 2014 switch to Anfield from Southampton.

The Croatian international, who reached the final of the World Cup, vastly improved in the latter stages of the 2017-18 campaign but he is still susceptible to making mistakes.

Depending on how the season pans out, Klopp may end up thinking that he should have dipped into the market to buy a new centre-back.
