PCB's Najam Sethi-led management committee likely to get extension

The body will have up to four weeks to bring back the PCB’s 2014 constitution

Umar Farooq21-Apr-2023

The Najam Sethi-led committee had been given 120 days to bring back the PCB’s 2014 constitution•PCB

The PCB’s interim management committee headed by Najam Sethi is set to get an additional two to four weeks to reimplement the board’s 2014 constitution. The committee was initially given a term of 120 days, which will expire on Saturday.Ehsan-ur-Rehman Mazari, the federal minister for inter-provincial coordination (IPC), confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that a request for the extension has been made to the prime minister, and that they have requested to name two nominees on the new board, one of whom is expected to become the PCB chairman.A copy of the IPC note to the prime minister’s office, seen by ESPNcricinfo, reads: “The tenure of the management committee expires on April 21 and PCB is directed to submit a comprehensive report of activities so far after the revival of the PCB constitution of 2014 from 22 December 2022 to 20 April 2023. Following the development, the IPC is in its opinion to extend the tenure of the committee for a period of two to four weeks (maximum) to materialise the outcome of the action.”Mazari said the delay was primarily due to the ongoing limited-overs series against New Zealand at home, and the process to bring in a permanent set-up in the PCB will begin next month. Nothing so far indicates that Sethi will not take over as the chairman once the transformation is complete.Related

The process will begin with the election commissioner convening a special meeting with member boards according to the 2014 constitution. The board will comprise ten members: four regional representatives (top-four teams from the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy), four representatives of services organisations (top-four department teams), and two members to be nominated by the patron at his discretion. The federal secretary of the Ministry of IPC or any other officer nominated by him shall be an ex-officio, non-voting 11th member. The term of each member of the board of governors is three years – equivalent to one term of the chairman – in a bid to promote continuity in the set-up. Among them, anyone can submit their papers to enter the election process. In December last year, it was announced that Sethi would lead a 14-member management committee to run the PCB’s affairs on an interim basis after Ramiz Raja was removed as chairman and the board’s 2019 constitution was abolished. The committee was expected to revert the PCB’s constitution to the 2014 version, and revive the regional and services department set-up in domestic cricket. The committee was tasked with the responsibility of forming a board of governors and electing a chairman, with Sethi himself in the fray, according to the 2014 constitution. The Ramiz Raja administration was removed last year as it had been functioning as per the constitution formed by Imran Khan’s government, which abolished the department structure in 2019 and had six teams representing Pakistan’s provinces in all tournaments. Imran had been a long time advocate for Pakistan’s domestic model to replicate that of Australia. The six-team model, however, was not popular outside the Imran administration and it was always likely that a new government in power would change the structure of Pakistan’s domestic cricket once again.

Arsenal struck gold on amazing star worth more than Trossard & Lewis-Skelly

Arsenal came into this season hopeful of getting their hands on the Premier League title at the third time of asking, but unfortunately, that now seems incredibly unlikely.

Mikel Arteta’s side have not been the same team that looked almost unstoppable last year, and while injuries have undoubtedly played a part in that, some of the team’s stars just haven’t performed well enough.

Martin Odegaard, Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard, for example, have all left a lot to be desired this year, with the latter only amassing a total of 13 goal involvements in 43 games, compared to the 19 he managed in 46 games last season.

However, it’s not all been doom and gloom, as some players have stepped up for Arteta in a big way, including Myles Lewis-Skelly, who’s now a part of Thomas Tuchel’s first England squad.

Why Lewis-Skelly deserved his England call-up

At the start of the season, you’d be hard-pressed to find a non-Arsenal fan who knew who Lewis-Skelly was, and yet, seven months later, the 18-year-old is one of the most talked-about youngsters in the country and is a part of the senior England squad.

Tuchel-England-squad

It’s certainly been a rapid rise for the Islington-born gem, but it’s one that is entirely deserved, as despite being so young, the exceptional talent has looked completely at home in the senior game.

For example, the Hale End star has made 26 first-team appearances this season, 16 of which have been starts, and of late, it would be fair to say he’s overtaken summer signing Riccardo Calafiori as the manager’s go-to left-back, despite the fact that his natural position is in central and defensive midfield.

What makes the youngster so impressive is the fact that he’s unfazed by everything, can outmuscle far more experienced players and, on top of having a sensational left foot on him, he’s unafraid to have a go at goal himself, as we saw in the game against Manchester City.

Finally, it’s not just on the pitch where the 18-year-old’s stock has risen according to Transfermarkt, he is now worth around €28m, which comes out to around £23.5m and is a sensational price tag for someone who only made his first team debut this season.

Arsenal's MylesLewis-Skellyin action with PSV Eindhoven's Guus Til

In all, Lewis-Skelly looks set to be a star for Arsenal and England for years to come, but even then, he’s worth considerably less than one of his teammates who didn’t get a call-up.

The Arsenal star worth millions more than Lewis-Skelly

When it comes to the other clear breakout star for Arsenal this season, you don’t need to look any further than fellow Hale Ender Ethan Nwaneri.

The 17-year-old phenomenon has already established himself as one of the team’s most dangerous attackers, which is reflected in his Transfermarkt valuation of €55m, which is about £46.2m.

That means he is now worth around £22.7m more than Lewis-Skelly and about £21m more than fellow winger Trossard, who has seen his valuation drop to €30m – £25.2m – this season.

Now, that is an extraordinary price tag for someone so young, but just like his academy teammate, the Enfield-born dynamo has more than proven his worth this season.

For example, in just 29 first-team appearances, totalling 1087 minutes, the often “unplayable” attacker, as dubbed by Jack Wilshere, has scored eight goals and provided one assist.

That means the incredible talent is averaging a goal involvement every 3.22 games or every 120.77 minutes.

Moreover, the “special” number 53, as dubbed by respected football analyst Ben Mattinson, isn’t just scoring simple tap-ins; he’s been firing them in from range, dribbling past opponents and proving that he can be a genuine threat anywhere near the opposition’s penalty area.

Ultimately, while this season has not gone to plan, Arsenal have at least found two potentially world-class talents in Lewis-Skelly and Nwaneri, who, in years to come, could each be worth a king’s ransom.

Liverpool's "special" academy star may leave a bigger legacy than Trent

Real Madrid typically get what they want, and they want Liverpool poster boy Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Barring an unforeseen turn of events, Los Blancos will line up for 2025/26 with Alexander-Arnold nestled into the right-back spot, with FSG failing to convince the 26-year-old to pen a new contract, his current deal three months away from expiry.

It’s the first bit of clarity in a campaign that has been decidedly lacking on long-term assurances. More news will follow in the coming weeks – and hopefully more positive news at that.

Liverpool'sTrentAlexander-Arnoldapplauds fans after the match

While emotions are aflame right now, we cannot detract from the incredible work Alexander-Arnold has plied at Anfield. He is a legend, but his legacy freezes abruptly, halted before reaching near inimitable heights.

Trent Alexander-Arnold's Liverpool legacy

Curiously, official announcements have yet to materialise and may not for weeks yet, but the dust has somewhat settled on Alexander-Arnold’s future.

Liverpool are on course to lift the Premier League title in Arne Slot’s first season in the dugout. It’s the beginning of a new era, one which promises prosperity, but Alexander-Arnold is only available for the overtures. Any future triumphs will not feature him in the celebrations.

How did it get to this stage? Is the right-back’s decision understandable? Acceptable? Fingers can be pointed every which way and reasoning can be found from each angle, but the plain truth is that this one hurts for the Reds, whose rise and rise under Jurgen Klopp coincided largely with the birth of a new homegrown superhero.

trent-alexander-arnold-liverpool-performance-opinion-jurgen-klopp-leicester-premier-league

In a way, Steven Gerrard was reincarnate through this wonderful, incredible player, genre-bending in his capacity for creativity and art, dazzling on the ball and innovative with his thinking.

But since contract-related noise ramped up, it’s always felt like Trent’s future might lie at the Santiago Bernabeu. Conversely, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah seem more likely to spend next year (at the least) within Slot’s brood, looking to defend their league title and challenge for the other lofty honours once again.

Alexander-Arnold, made vice-captain in 2023, will not wear the armband, not properly, not as was preordained when he escaped footballing boyhood and clearly became one of the great game’s distinguished technicians.

He currently has 349 Liverpool appearances to his name with 22 goals and 87 assists. Trent is the highest-assisting defender in Premier League history.

For those who are aggrieved, dismayed, Alexander-Arnold’s legacy will stand strong through the ages, withstand the test of time. But it could have been more.

In fact, there’s a homegrown member of Slot’s Liverpool squad who may even eclipse Alexander-Arnold.

Here’s why.

The academy star who may leave a bigger legacy

Alexander-Arnold is leaving Liverpool, but Liverpool has more than enough to forge plenty of success over the coming years. With such rich options across the park and coffers deep enough to replenish with high-level options, there’s much to look forward to with Slot at the helm.

But the academy connection runs deep, and Curtis Jones is now tasked with stepping up to the plate and raising his own bar. He will, after all, be the eldest child in the Kirkby family, and one of the more experienced first-team players besides.

Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones celebrates

Indeed, having featured 170 times for the Reds, Jones, 24, has scored 19 goals and provided 20 assists, excelling in parts this season, seemingly enamoured with Slot’s brand of fluent football.

He’s been in and out of the starting line-up, but Jones is unquestionably a first-team mainstay, with the technical quality and midfield dynamism to become one of the city’s standout stars with just a few more developments to his sprawling skill set.

As per FBref, Jones ranks among the top 6% of midfielders across the whole of Europe over the past year for assists, the top 1% for pass completion, the top 14% for successful take-ons, the top 4% for touches in the attacking penalty area and the top 13% for tackles in the middle third.

Those last few metrics border on obscurity, but they do highlight his combativeness in the middle of the park, willingness to jump forward and impact in the final third as well as maintain possession when in the depths of Slot’s ball-playing game. A paragon of composure and metronomic presence, Jones bears the blueprint of a superstar.

After all, FBref’s data-driven collections reveal that Jude Bellingham is his most comparable player. Now there’s a player, albeit not one whose achieved much popularity with the Liverpool fanbase.

So what’s the point of all this? Why is it pertinent? Well, as previously alluded to, Jones has made steady progress at Liverpool since making his debut against Wolverhampton Wanderers in January 2019, since curling home that oh-so-sweet strike against Everton in the FA Cup, announcing himself.

Development is not linear, and Jones has had to battle through adversity to cement a place in Liverpool’s squad, dealt bad hands on the injury front as well as some contentious hindrances in regard to disciplinary dealings.

But Jones has emerged from the fiery gates of uncertainty as an avid youth, now regarded as one of Liverpool’s most talented and valuable players. CIES Football Observatory, in fact, have recorded Jones to have a market value of £67m, above the likes of Conor Gallagher and Dejan Kulusevski.

Maybe he’ll never quite inspire awe as Alexander-Arnold’s almost celestial range of passing has done, but Jones is industrious as they come; his heart beats Liverpool red.

Liverpool player Curtis Jones.

You wouldn’t bet against the silky centre-midfielder from emulating Gerrard and retiring a one-club man. Hailed for his “special” performance for England against Greece in November by Fabrizio Romano, scoring on his debut, Jones is clearly going from strength to strength.

Should that be the case, given the trajectory Liverpool are following and the high regard he is held in by Slot, Jones may well be remembered more fondly than his soon-to-be-former teammate Trent when all’s said and done.

Ollie Price rings up century before low-key day ends in a draw at Headingley

Yorkshire claim 13 points, Gloucestershire take 12 as rain intervenes

Gloucestershire all-rounder Ollie Price completed an excellent maiden first-team century during an otherwise low-key final day at Headingley as their LV= Insurance County Championship clash with Yorkshire finished in a draw.Price moved from 97 not out overnight to reach three figures in the day’s first over as the visitors were bowled out for 464 in reply to a first-innings 550 for 9 declared during the first half of the morning.Price was last man out for 113 off 162 balls to on-loan left-arm spinner Dan Moriarty, who finished with 5 for 139 on Yorkshire debut.Yorkshire started their second innings with a lead of 86 and reached 200 for 6 in the 48th over when rain stopped play at 4.30pm, a lead of 286. No more play was possible.During a weather-affected third day, 22-year-old all-rounder Ollie Price shared a seventh-wicket partnership of 162 with his older brother Tom. This season, the brothers have both posted their maiden first-team centuries in this competition after new-ball seamer Tom did it in a draw at New Road in April. There was always the chance of a potential final day contrived finish, but that didn’t eventuate and both sides – relegated from Division One last year – remain closer to the bottom of the Division Two table than they are to the top.Yorkshire claimed 13 points and have won once from seven outings, while Gloucestershire took 12 and remain winless after eight.Price reached his milestone century with a leg-glanced boundary off the fifth ball of the day from George Hill’s seam. Two balls later, Matt Taylor edged seamer Dom Leech to first slip as Gloucestershire slipped to 425 for 9.Unfortunately for the smattering of spectators present on an overcast day at Headingley, this wasn’t a day’s play jam-packed with edge-of-your-seat action. But even though the game was drifting, Gloucestershire bowled well after lunch and took some scalps with them back to the South West. Adam Lyth also posted a pleasing 55 either side of lunch for Yorkshire.Given the position of both sides in the Division Two table and no threat of relegation, it was somewhat of a surprise that no adventure was shown.Wrapping up Gloucestershire’s innings, debutant Moriarty bowled a sweeping Price to secure his fifth wicket having joined Yorkshire from Surrey for the next month of Championship action.Lyth and Fin Bean shared a 73-run opening partnership at the start of Yorkshire’s second innings, with Bean caught behind pushing forwards at Zafar Gohar’s left-arm spin three balls into the afternoon for 38 including a pulled six off Ollie Price’s off-spin.Lyth pulled, reverse swept and drove before edging Zaman Akhter’s seam to first slip, ending a 56-run second-wicket stand with captain Shan Masood, who was bowled reverse sweeping at Gohar shortly afterwards, leaving Yorkshire at 135 for 3 in the 31st over.By this stage, the floodlights had been turned on at Headingley. For the game, it was very much lights out.A break for bad light and rain from just before 3pm accounted for the loss of seven overs before played resumed, allowing impressive Gohar to claim his third wicket when Dawid Malan was caught behind cutting for 20. That was the first of two wickets in five balls as Ben Charlesworth’s first ball accounted for Jonny Tattersall, caught at slip as Yorkshire fell to 161 for 5 in the 40th over.Gohar was the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 63 from 18 overs, while Chris Dent struck with his third ball, getting Hill caught at slip with his left-arm medium pace. Dent celebrated in disbelief and patted Hill on the back as he departed, maybe owing to the fact he usually bowls part-time left-arm spin. It proved to be the fixture’s final ball.

Tammy Beaumont scored a double-century as England Women piled on 510 runs in a day to build a huge 390-run lead against Australia A Women during a three-day warm-up for the Women’s Ashes Test at Trent Bridge next week.Beaumont retired out on 201 from 238 balls in Derby with England 611 for 7 in response to 221 all out by an Australia A side captained by left-arm spinner Jess Jonassen, the only member of Australia’s Test squad to move into the A side for the build-up game.Beaumont and Emma Lamb, who fell for 10 on Thursday when she was caught by Tahlia Wilson off the bowling of Maitlan Brown, are England’s incumbent Test openers, having done the job in last year’s draw with South Africa at Taunton. Heather Knight, Nat Sciver-Brunt and Sophia Dunkley all scored half-centuries and Amy Jones cruised to 88 off just 65 balls before Jonassen had her caught by Brown.Related

Jones was full of praise for Beaumont’s knock, which resumed on 65 on the second morning with England 120 runs behind with nine wickets in hand. She shared a 170-run partnership with captain Knight for the second wicket and 148 with Sciver-Brunt, Knight’s deputy, for the third.”Five hundred runs in a day is a great effort and Tammy set that up brilliantly,” Jones said. “I thought it was an incredible innings really. I don’t remember any chances. She just looked really free flowing and soaked up pressure in the harder moments of the game as well, so she was brilliant and we had some good partnerships throughout which is good to see.”But an intriguing sub-plot was developing in Leicester, where England A, led by captain by Lauren Winfield-Hill, took a lead of 278 runs after two days of their three-day warm-up against Australia’s Test players. Winfield-Hill, who lost her England central contract ahead of this season amid a nine-month period of being overlooked for the senior side, reached 106 from 148 deliveries batting at No. 4 before legspinner Alana King had her caught by Georgia Wareham.Meanwhile Danni Wyatt, who is part of England’s Test squad but moved to the A side this week, scored 37 off 43 balls at No. 5 before she was trapped lbw by Australia pace spearhead Darcie Brown. Wyatt had moved to the top of the order in the shorter formats last year when Winfield-Hill lost her place during the 50-over World Cup and Beaumont was dropped from the T20 side ahead of the Commonwealth Games. Winfield-Hill made a return to T20Is during England’s winter tour of West Indies, twice batting at No. 3 below Wyatt, who has played 245 white-ball internationals but is yet to make her Test debut.Paige Scholfield, the leading run-scorer in the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy so far this season, also scored a century, while Bess Heath and Grace Scrivens, who led England to the Under-19 T20 World Cup final earlier this year, scored a half-centuries against the Australians.Ashleigh Gardner, the Australian allrounder named Player of the Tournament after helping her side lift the T20 World Cup in February, didn’t bowl as a precaution after being hit on the right index finger while catching before play on Thursday. While there was some swelling, the injury didn’t trouble her while batting or fielding and she was expected to be fit for the Test starting on Thursday.England A closed on 562 for 9 in reply to Australia’s first-innings 284, which was built on opener Beth Mooney’s century. Kim Garth was the pick on a “tough day” for Australia’s bowlers, with 4 for 69, and King claimed three wickets.”There is a lot of positives to come out of it though,” Garth said. “I think we actually did quite well on a wicket that’s not offering much for the bowlers. Credit to them as well, they did bat very well. If you asked the coaching staff upstairs, I think they probably would have wanted a game like this rather than just cruising through three days of cricket so I think there’s plenty to take out of it into next week.”
