England Women have appointed former Western Australia and Tasmania seamer Tim Macdonald as senior assistant coach.Macdonald – who previously worked with England Women’s head coach Lisa Keightley at Perth Scorchers and Western Fury – took up the role on an interim basis for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup earlier this year and will now take up the post full-time.The 39-year-old Macdonald joined the England Women’s squad’s bio-secure training camp at the Incora County Ground, in Derby, on Tuesday.”I’ve known Tim for a while and I’ve worked with him previously and I knew what skills he would bring to the group, especially with the fast bowlers,” Keightley said. “He was a great addition across the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in Australia and when it came to interview he was the stand-out candidate in terms of helping the team continue their improvement.”Although plans for England’s international schedule are yet to be finalised, Heather Knight’s side are expected to host South Africa after India pulled out of a proposed tri-series. ODI and T20I fixtures are likely to be scheduled for September. The ECB has been working to salvage its programme of women’s cricket in the wake of Covid-19 impacting much of the summer. Centrally contracted England players returned to training in June, with the confirmation of South Africa’s tour expected in the coming weeks.

ECB's all-white board 'not acceptable', says new chair Ian Watmore

Watmore to push for greater diversity and an ECB that is more “representative of society”

Ian Watmore, the ECB’s new chair, has admitted the current make-up of the board is “not acceptable” and insisted there must be more diversity within the administration of cricket.Watmore, who officially replaced Colin Graves at the ECB on Tuesday, believes the ECB can’t lead the sport effectively unless its leadership is “representative of the society it’s trying to serve”.With Lord Kamlesh Patel, who has been a key architect of the South Asian Action Plan, stepping down from the board having completed his five-year term, all 11 members of the current ECB board are white. With four of those positions taken up by women, Watmore also accepted the board’s gender balance was “very strong” but “could still be better”.”It’s quite clear that we do not have the diversity of board that we need going forward,” Watmore said. “With Kamlesh stepping down, we revert to being an all-white board, and that’s not acceptable going forward in the long run.”I very much want to have a diverse, inclusive board at the top of English cricket, but also right through English cricket. There’s more than just the board behind the ECB: there are lot of important subcommittees that do a lot of the heavy lifting behind the scenes. That’s an area where I want to also broaden out diversity and inclusion.”We are very strong with our gender balance, but it could still be better. But our ethnicity and other attributes are not right.”If a sport’s governing body is not representative of the society it’s trying to serve, then it isn’t going to be an effective leader. That’s definitely something we need to develop.”In what appeared to be an attempt to distance himself from Graves, who ended his tenure as ECB chair by publicly questioning “the point” of a third of the first-class counties, Watmore expressed his support for all 18. While he accepted that “economics and performance standards” would have to be maintained, he stressed he had no plans to cut the numbers.”One of the things about the county system that I really like is its diversity and richness,” Watmore said. “Let’s start with Leicestershire, who have got their first female chair in Mehmooda Duke. She’s got really exciting plans for that county, building England players of the future from within her boundaries and developing diversity.”Derbyshire have stepped up to the fore and will be hosting the women’s international games. Gloucestershire a couple of years ago were the first county to have an all-rainbow county cricket shirt as part of their anti-homophobia day. Worcestershire are very strong on disability cricket. Kent and Durham are powerhouses of developing players and have created a huge talent pool over the years.”Everywhere, the county system is playing its part in the richness of the tapestry of English cricket, and I am very proud of all of them for what they’re doing.”What I think counties should be aspiring to do is playing in all forms of cricket and developing England players of the future. Potentially, each of them having a nuanced, localised strategy of the type I was talking about.”Some will be the big Test match providers, others might be the regional hub for talent in, say the south-west or the east of England. Each county can play its part in the future of English cricket, in addition to playing in the core tournaments. That’s the vision I come into this job with.”But if the economics and performance standards don’t allow that over a period of time, or individual counties decide they want to do something different, that’s a conversation. But it’s not where I’m coming from as I come into this job.”

£209,000-per-week star holds talks to join Arsenal as his club eyes Lukaku

Chelsea flop Romelu Lukaku is in the sights of a major club, as their own star striker holds talks to join Arsenal through his agent.

Edu and Arteta targeting prolific new striker for Arsenal

After missing out on RB Leipzig sensation Benjamin Sesko this week, who put pen to paper on a new and improved contract, it is back to the drawing board for Gunners sporting director Edu – as he looks to sign a new number nine for Mikel Arteta.

Sesko had a proposal to leave Leipzig from Arsenal, as well as Chelsea and Man United (Fabrizio Romano), but the Slovenia international opted to remain in Germany. His 18-goal haul in all competitions last season, coupled with a tantalising £55 million release clause in his past contract, pushed Arsenal to move for the 21-year-old – but they were ultimately rebuffed.

Alternative options have been mooted as the transfer window now officially opens for business. Arsenal could reignite their pursuit of Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee, with the Dutchman's deal containing its own £34 million exit clause.

Zirkzee helped Bologna qualify for the Champions League with his 11 Serie A goals last season, but Arsenal face stiff competition from AC Milan, who are currently pushing for a deal to sign the 23-year-old.

Arteta wants a young partner for Kai Havertz in the forward area, and one who can add that extra degree of firepower, as Arsenal look to make it third-time-lucky and beat Man City in a race for the Premier League title.

A big-name forward who's been linked with a move to the Emirates, but to a lesser degree, is Napoli star Victor Osimhen. The Nigerian, who signed a new £209,000-per-week contract last season, also agreed to have a £113 million release clause inserted into the deal.

Victor Osimhen

“We still can't rule out Arsenal in the race for Osimhen," said journalist Ben Jacobs to GiveMeSport earlier this year.

"It’s also true that PSG have Osimhen very, very high on their list of targets and can move in the market because they will free up money due to Kylian Mbappe’s departure. I'm still told by sources that Osimhen’s priority is the Premier League, which is encouraging for Chelsea and Arsenal. He would be looking for about £250,000 per week, which Arsenal, Chelsea and PSG would all be happy to pay.”

Napoli eyeing Lukaku as Osimhen holds Arsenal talks

Italian news site Il Roma has shared an update on the 25-year-old this week, and it concerns Arsenal. They claim Osimhen has held talks to join Arsenal via his agent, with Napoli fully preparing for the African's departure amid the growing clamor for his services. He also has suitors in Saudi Arabia, specifically Al Hilal and Al Ahli, while Ligue 1 giants Paris-Saint Germain are "in the background".

Napoli have earmarked Lukaku as a top target to replace Osimhen, so it will be interesting to see if the Belgian's departure from Chelsea could actually help to greatly strengthen Arsenal's forward ranks.

Rangers can ditch Desssers with move for £4m machine

Glasgow Rangers have now signed four players this summer as Philippe Clement begins to build a squad which he will be hoping returns to the top of Scottish football next season.

Having lost several players at the end of last month, plus the need to sell a few first-team stars to raise funds, it is clear his business is far from finished.

Could the Belgian manager be about to make a more concrete effort for someone who was linked with Rangers last year?

Rangers eye up move for 2023 transfer target

Petar Ratkov was linked with a move to Rangers in February 2023, as Michael Beale was keeping a close eye on the youngster.

That summer, however, he joined Red Bull Salzburg for a fee in the region of €4.5m (£4m), seemingly ending the Light Blues' chances of ever signing him.

According to GIVEMESPORT however, the Ibrox side are eyeing up a potential move for the player this summer as they look to finally land a player who could have joined a year earlier.

Could Clement perhaps ruthlessly ditch Cyriel Dessers in the coming weeks to fund a move for Ratkov?

What Petar Ratkov could offer Rangers

In his maiden campaign for the Gers, Dessers scored 22 goals in 54 matches for the club, which, on the surface, appears to be a recent effort for his first season.

Cyriel Dessers

However, he did miss 27 big chances in the Premiership, while having a goal conversion rate of just 16%, which indicates that Clement clearly needs another striker or two this summer who could be far more clinical in the opposition penalty area.

A decent fee could be brought in for the Nigerian this summer and, considering he is approaching 30, it might not be a bad idea to cash in, which was backed up by GIVEMESPORT reporting earlier this summer that the attacker could be moved on to make way for new talent.

Ratkov, on the other hand, is still two months away from turning 21, indicating he has plenty of time to continue his development.

He may have only scored five goals during his debut season for Salzburg, but during the 2022/23 campaign, he scored 13 goals in 26 league matches for FK TSC, along with creating five big chances and succeeding with 47% of his dribble attempts.

Adding Ratkov to the squad would continue Clement’s philosophy of bringing in talented youngsters who have the potential to turn into players who might make the club a small fortune.

Rangers eyeing up move for "menacing" £4m Roofe replacement

The Light Blues missed out on him last year but have retained their interest in the forward.

ByDan Emery Jun 20, 2024

Football talent scout Jacek Kulig profiled Ratkov back in 2022 when he was first emerging into the public eye, stating that he was a “target man” while counting “pace, finishing and link-up play” as his main strengths.

All of these could work wonders in the current Rangers setup, especially with the way Clement likes to deploy his men in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

The 20-year-old hasn’t quite hit the heights expected of him since moving to Austria last summer, but this could open the door for the Light Blues to swoop in and reignite their interest in the centre-forward this summer.

Alex Hales returns to the Sydney Thunder for BBL

Hales was the second-highest run scorer in last year’s tournament and will be available for the whole competition

Alex Hales will return to the Sydney Thunder for the Big Bash as he becomes the first overseas player to sign a new deal with the league ahead of what is expected to be the arrival of a significant number of England players.Tom Banton (Brisbane Heat) and Tom Curran (Sydney Sixers) are so far the only other confirmed overseas names for the tournament but they had existing deals with their clubs.Hales, who was dropped from the England side shortly before the 2019 World Cup after receiving a ban for using recreational drugs and has not played since, was the second-highest run scorer in last season’s BBL with 576 at 38.40 and a strike-rate of 146.93.”To get the chance to come back is exciting because we’re at the start of something,” Hales said. “I think the next two-to-three years is going to be very special for Sydney Thunder as a franchise. I really believe that, and to know I’m coming back to that means a lot.”It is expected that England names will feature strongly in this season’s BBL. ESPNcricinfo previously reported that Jonny Bairstow and Jason Roy were lining up deals while Dawid Malan, the current No.1-ranked T20I batsman, is also in the mix and Liam Livingstone is tipped to head back to the Perth Scorchers. However, with England in talks about a limited-overs tour of South Africa in November it remains to be seen the availability of those who would be part of the squad. Overseas players arriving for the BBL will need to undergo two weeks of quarantine when they reach Australia amid the Covid-19 protocols.Shane Bond, the Sydney Thunder coach, said: “There’s a whole range of reasons to be excited about Alex extending his contract – and they’re exactly why we signed him in the first place. He is a great player who is available for the entire tournament.”He played brilliantly for us last year, but he was brilliant on-and-off the field. He was hugely popular with the players and support staff – and that’s how Alex is viewed wherever he plays.”We have some very talented players in our squad, and it is important to have those professionals, like Alex, around so they can learn off them as well. Everyone in the team is looking forward to having him back, he’s a brilliant bloke.”The revised fixture list for the BBL – which is currently due to start on December 3 – is yet to be confirmed by Cricket Australia but there is a chance it will be played in rolling hubs around the country to navigate the various Covid-19 border restrictions.

Aston Villa told they can sign star who Pep called "brilliant" for £30m

Aston Villa could be in the market to add a new centre-forward to their playing squad during the summer transfer window to replace Jhon Duran.

The Colombia international is reportedly closing in on a move to Premier League rivals Chelsea, which would leave a gap behind Ollie Watkins in Unai Emery's attack.

Sporting director Monchi is said to be lining up a swoop to sign Kelechi Iheanacho on a free transfer when his contract at Leicester City expires at the end of the month, and has already had a meeting with the player's representatives.

Leicester City strikerKelechi Iheanacho.

What Villa could do, however, is bring in a versatile attacker who can play in multiple positions across the frontline, rather than signing a winger and a striker as two separate deals.

That may be their intention with one of the latest players to have been linked with a move to Villa Park, as they are reportedly eyeing up a former Manchester City star.

Aston Villa told asking price for Barcelona attacker

According to the printed edition of The Sunday Express (16/06/24), via TBRFootball, Aston Villa are one of four Premier League clubs interested in a deal to sign Barcelona forward Ferran Torres this summer.

The report claims that the Spanish giants need to cash in on the Spain international in order to fund their own business, as they would like to submit an offer of £20m to sign full-back Joao Cancelo from Manchester City.

It states that Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United, Newcastle United, and Villa have all been put on red alert by the news of his availability, and they could now swoop to land the versatile attacker.

This suggests that there will be plenty of competition to sign the talented gem, who won the Premier League two times during his spell at The Etihad earlier in his career. The report adds that the 24-year-old star is set to be available for a fee of £30m, although it remains to be seen whether or not the Villans are prepared to pay it.

Why Aston Villa should sign Ferran Torres

Firstly, the Spanish ace is a versatile forward who can cover multiple positions, as he has played 39 games or more in his career as a centre-forward, as a right-winger, and as a left-winger respectively.

This could make him a very useful addition to the squad to replace Duran due to his ability to offer Emery an option out wide or through the middle when needed.

As you can see in the table above, both players offer a decent goal threat off the bench but the Spain international could provide more as a creative outlet for his team. Torres, who was once hailed as "brilliant" by Pep Guardiola during his time with City, would also come in with experience in the Premier League, having produced nine goals in 28 top-flight games for the English giants.

Therefore, the £30m-rated ace could be a shrewd addition to the squad to provide quality depth ahead of the Champions League and Premier League campaign to come for Villa.
