Man Utd lining up "genius" manager to replace Erik ten Hag

When Erik ten Hag first joined Manchester United in 2023, the expectation was that he would adopt a similar philosophy to the one that brought him so much success at Ajax.

Not only were the Dutch side winning games, but they were also doing it in style and convincing fashion, which suits the United DNA.

Last season, we saw glimpses of what a Ten Hag United side could look like, but some key profiles were missing, such as a proactive ball-playing goalkeeper.

However, fast forward to today, and the boss is under intense scrutiny, with his team sitting in seventh and his future at the club looking uncertain.

Man Utd’s search for a new manager

According to a report from Spain via Football365, Sir Jim Ratcliffe has shortlisted five potential replacements for Ten Hag.

On the list, there’s a mixture of both managers with experience and a couple with new ideas, with Thomas Tuchel and Antonio Conte fitting into the category of the former.

Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel

Thiago Motta of Bologna is also a manager that Man Utd are looking at; he’s revolutionised football in Italy this season.

Another coach that’s “caught the attention” of the club is Roberto De Zerbi, who’s currently managing Brighton & Hove Albion, and he could just prove to be the best option.

ByJoe Nuttall Apr 16, 2024 De Zerbi could be the best replacement for Ten Hag

Replacing such a successful manager like Graham Potter at Brighton was supposed to be an extremely difficult task, but De Zerbi has done a fantastic job.

The 44-year-old really made a name for himself at Sassuolo in the Serie A, when the Italian side finished eighth in consecutive seasons.

Brighton & Hove Albion manager Roberto De Zerbi watches on from Elland Road as the Seagulls visit Leeds United in the Premier League.

In 2021, the Italian boss accepted an adventure in Ukraine, as he became the boss of Shakhtar Donetsk, before moving to the Seagulls and signing a four-year contract.

Since moving to the Premier League side in 2022, De Zerbi has become a Brighton hero, leading the club to European competition for the first time in the club’s history after finishing sixth last season.

The Brighton manager’s style of play is one of the most unique and entertaining in the league, with his controlled, possession-based approach often allowing his team to dominate possession.

This is the case regardless of the opponent, as shown by Brighton’s average possession of 62% this season, which is much higher than United’s 50.1% under Ten Hag this campaign.

Brighton & Hove Albion manager Roberto De Zerbi shakes hands with Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag after the match

His usual formation is a 4-2-3-1 with ball-playing stars all over the field, which suits the United squad down to a tee as that’s the current setup that Ten Hag opts for.

Lisandro Martinez, Kobbie Mainoo, and Marcus Rashford would all surely thrive in this system, taking on the roles of Lewis Dunk, Pascal Gross, and Kaoru Mitoma.

But most importantly, De Zerbi, who beat Ten Hag twice in 2023, would introduce a crystal clear philosophy and gameplan, which have been unidentifiable at the Red Devils this season.

Overall, if United are to hire the “genuis" manager as dubbed by football analyst Statman Dave, then it will cost them around £12m to break his release clause in his contract, but it may just prove to be worth the fee.

Aston Villa lead Man Utd in race for "fantastic" £30m signing for Emery

Aston Villa are leading the way for one of Europe's elite talents in what could prove a massive summer for Unai Emery's side.

Champions League almost secured

It has been a fantastic Premier League campaign for the Villans, despite being held to a draw in their most recent outing against Chelsea. With three games left to play, they can still surpass their best-ever Premier League points tally (when they recorded 74 in the first season of the competition) and they sit seven points clear of fifth-placed Tottenham.

Though Ange Postecoglou's side have two games in hand and can theoretically narrow the gap to just a point, they face Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea in their final five games, meaning that even two wins from their last three games should be enough to secure fourth place for Villa.

With it will come Champions League football, and they will need a bigger squad to help deal with the additional games from the new format starting next season.

Ollie Watkins alternative lined up

One of the positions in need of strengthening is the no.9 spot, with Ollie Watkins the only recognised elite option for Emery to call upon. Though he has enjoyed a fantastic campaign, he will need support, and Villa appear to have found just the man for the job.

That comes in the form of Lille striker Jonathan David. According to reports in Italy, via Sport Witness, even though the 24-year-old is wanted by big Serie A clubs such as AC Milan, it is Aston Villa who are currently 'on pole' to sign the Canadian.

They lead another English club in Manchester United in the race for the attacker, who has long been linked with a move to the Premier League.

Sky Sports pundit Micah Richards dubbed him a "fantastic" player ahead of the 2022 World Cup, insisting that clubs should "keep an eye on" the Canadian.

“Jonathan David is one we should keep an eye on,” said Richards. “He’s a fantastic player. I watched him for Lille in the Champions League last season.”

Aston Villa transfer target Jonathan David in action for Lille.

Having scored 82 times in four seasons in France, he knows where the back of the net is, and takes pride in finding it with regularity. Quizzed on how much he was enjoying finding the back of the net during one particular purple patch, David admitted just how much he loves his role.

"I'm loving it", he explained after grabbing a brace. "But the most important thing is to win the match. If my goals and my work help the team, I'm happy. But the most important thing is to win. I'm in good form but it's still a collective effort because my teammates put me in the best situations to finish the actions."

Able to play either on the left of attack or centrally, David is valued at just £30m this summer, and Lille are unable to demand much more thanks to his contract expiring next year, leaving them with just two transfer windows to make any sort of return on the £23m they shelled out to bring him to Ligue 1.

He could, therefore, be a bargain buy for Emery and co.

Sampaio 1 a 0.

Sheffield Wednesday struck gold signing hero who’s worth more than Bannan

Sheffield Wednesday should be praised for how proactive they were when it came to signings in the January transfer window when talk of pulling off an unbelievable survival act in the Championship would have sounded like an outlandish pipedream to even the most rose-tinted Owls supporter.

Both Ian Poveda and James Beadle walking in through the door that month instantly made an impact in the Wednesday first-team ranks, with the Leeds United loanee causing Birmingham City all sorts of bother with an assist on his second start in his new temporary colours.

Beadle has left such a lasting impression that rumours swirling now indicate that Danny Rohl wants to tie down the young Brighton and Hove Albion goalkeeper to a permanent deal this summer, having picked up eight clean sheets from his 19 Wednesday games.

Ike Ugbo is another that Rohl will want to be kept on, having netted seven Wednesday goals to steer his loan side away from the perilous drop-zone, but the German boss will just be thankful that a fellow attacking star in Anthony Musaba is permanently fixed to Hillsborough after excelling in the pivotal crunch matches that saw the South Yorkshire side amazingly stave off relegation.

Anthony Musaba's start at Wednesday

Musaba was actually purchased before a ball was even kicked this campaign away from those listed who made a great impact in January, but it wouldn't be all smooth sailing for the ex-AS Monaco from the get-go when relocating to England.

The Dutch winger would struggle to make a starting spot his own under the dire early season management of Xisco Munoz, having to wait until mid-September for his first start, before eventually exploding into life in his new Championship surroundings with the transformative Rohl at the helm.

Sheffield Wednesday forward Anthony Musaba.

The 23-year-old's up-and-down start to EFL life would only see him net once in the league under the unpopular Spaniard, before getting into his goalscoring groove more under the charismatic former Bayern Munich man.

Musaba's transformation under Rohl

Showing signs of his obvious quality with two assists against Rotherham United in the early days of Rohl's much-talked-about tenure, Musaba would save his very best for December of the campaign to truly get going with three goals registered from seven games that month which included this last-gasp winner against Queens Park Rangers.

The goals didn't dry up after that, however, with Musaba becoming a hero immortalised into the Owls hall-of-fame for forever now with his efforts in recent weeks ensuring his side dramatically stayed up after looking like relegation goners when managed by the clueless Munoz.

Musaba was instrumental in big wins being picked up from tense contests to edge the Owls closer to their goal of Championship survival, scoring late on – against QPR again in April – to pick up a 2-0 win at Loftus Road, before helping himself to two assists later that month against relegation rivals Blackburn Rovers on the road to secure a fantastic 3-1 victory.

But, his strike against West Bromwich Albion during the penultimate game of the gruelling second-tier season saw journalists such as Joe Crann shower the electric Dutchman with some much-deserved praise who, in his words, was absolutely "fantastic" in a polished 3-0 win over Carlos Corberan's tricky side.

These huge results meant the final day away at Sunderland wasn't really that nervy or on a knife's edge from a Wednesday point of view, with Musaba and Co confidently strutting their stuff in a 2-0 win to register a third straight three points to stay put in the Championship.

If Rohl is to stay put for next season, with the rumour mill at Hillsborough making supporters anxious about his immediate future in the dug-out knowing what occurred with Darren Moore, the side for next season will no doubt be built around talents such as the breakout 23-year-old to kick on and achieve more after keeping their heads above water.

Musaba's transfer value has understandably gone up since walking into the building as a relative unknown prospect from France last summer, with the tantalising attacker now worth more than fellow Wednesday hero Barry Bannan according to Football Transfers.

Musaba's transfer value in 2024

Looking at Football Transfers' valuation of the entire valiant Wednesday troops, Musaba's boosted worth now sees a £1.2m price-tag attached next to his name, according to Football Transfers.

Bannan, who has been a dependable servant for the Owls over a remarkable 402 games now, has seen his value decline slightly after playing a lesser role in Wednesday's success story this time around with his worth now standing at £942k.

Still, the ageing 34-year-old would come up trumps at the Stadium of Light when needed by assisting Liam Palmer's opener for 1-0 and looks likely to be signing a new contract very soon to remain at Hillsborough right up until his retirement date.

Musaba doesn't have to think about the impending end of his career anytime soon, with the 23-year-old having the potential to bump up his transfer value even more if he stars in the Championship next campaign again.

Wednesday supporters will just have to hope Rohl is convinced to stay on in South Yorkshire amidst all the interest in his services from other clubs trying to persuade him to move on, alongside the fact there could well be a summer of upheaval on the horizon with the likes of Ugbo returning to Troyes and a number of out-of-contract figures leaving.

Still, if this rollercoaster season is anything to go by, Wednesday should never be written off in moments of adversity and would be able to emerge out the other end ready to go again with Musaba the potential star man up-front.

PCA seeks collective solutions as players face prospect of pay cuts

ECB will put proposals to players’ trade union this week

PCA chief executive Tony Irish has stressed the need for collective decision-making as cricketers in England and Wales face pay cuts and the prospect of being furloughed as the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic threatens to drastically curtail the 2020 season. The ECB have been involved in regular meetings with stakeholders – broadcasters, clubs and players – since it became apparent that the domestic season would be unable to start on time, and gave guidance to counties last week advising them on furloughing their employees under the UK government’s job retention scheme. The scheme allows employers to place their staff on temporary leaves of absence, during which time the government will pay the lower of £2,500 a month or 80% of their salary. Glamorgan and Yorkshire have already furloughed the majority of their non-playing staff, and other counties are likely to follow suit.ALSO READ: Coronavirus outbreak – county cricket latestLater this week, the ECB will put a series of proposals to the PCA (the players’ trade union) and to counties, most likely as part of their emergency financial package. Some clubs are likely to take advantage of the government’s scheme, which would enable significant savings at a time when revenue has fallen “off a cliff”, as Lancashire chief executive Daniel Gidney has put it.”We are aware that COVID-19 is having a very significant impact on cricket and that solutions need to be found for the challenges that we all face,” Irish said. “It’s an unprecedented time filled with uncertainty and naturally that brings lots of speculation. Much of that currently is around furloughing of players and wage cuts for players.”We believe that solutions should be sought, and where possible agreed, collectively. We understand that recommendations or proposals will be put to us during this week.”We will work through those with the players and then with the ECB and the first-class counties with a view to seeking agreed solutions.”While it has been suggested that England’s centrally-contracted players, some of whom earn an annual salary of around £1million, might have their pay cut to help ensure that the game can survive the crisis, the PA news agency reported on Sunday that the terms of their contracts mean any such move would have to be a voluntary one.As things stand, the season is due to start on May 28 with the opening fixtures in the T20 Blast, but it is highly unlikely that will be possible, with Michael Gove, the government minister, saying at a press conference on Sunday that the UK should prepare for a “significant period” of lockdown and that things “will get worse” before they get better.County groundsmen will have plenty of time to prepare their pitches for the summer•Getty Images

It is hoped that an abbreviated season will still be possible, with the T20 Blast and the Hundred set to be prioritised as the most lucrative competitions. While several smaller counties have been heavily reliant on grants from the ECB in recent years, both Northamptonshire and Derbyshire posted strong financial results for 2019, and Durham chief executive Tim Bostock has suggested that it is the larger counties – those which have diversified income streams – that will suffer most from the crisis, with hotel and conference room bookings cancelled en masse.”They’ve got businesses that rely on income outside of ECB regular monthly funding – particularly I can think of Lancashire, Warwickshire and Yorkshire, the Ageas Bowl,” Bostock told talkSPORT.”They’ve done the right thing, they’ve diversified so that they can survive without ECB income, but what that has meant is… that has fallen off the edge of a cliff through no fault of their own. That is a major challenge. A club like Durham – a larger percentage of our income comes from the guaranteed ECB income as a result of the new television deal, and therefore we are much less exposed.”The ECB is also keen to ensure that club cricket is able to survive the crisis, with all recreational cricket and age-group programmes All Stars and Dynamos currently suspended indefinitely. On Friday, the governing body informed clubs that repayments on the scheme that allows clubs to take out interest-free loans to complete development work have been suspended until May 2021.

PIF enquire over dream Isak successor who’s scored 3 vs Newcastle in 23/24

Newcastle United have enjoyed another successful campaign in front of goal, with the club scoring the fourth-most goals in the Premier League so far this season.

However, it hasn't been enough to propel the Magpies back into the Champions League places for a second successive season, with injuries preventing the club from welcoming any of Europe's biggest clubs to St James' Park next term.

The defensive department has taken a battering during 2023/24, with Kieran Trippier, Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles all missing large parts of the season, which has often resulted in a makeshift backline for Eddie Howe's side.

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe.

Newcastle's forward line has undoubtedly saved the Magpies from a disastrous campaign, with striker Alexander Isak single-handedly keeping the club within arm's length of a European spot.

The Swedish international has scored 20 times in 27 Premier League outings over the course of the season – a tally that has attracted interest from multiple sides across England's top division, namely Arsenal.

Howe certainly won't want to lose his talisman this summer, but if the club are forced to part ways with the 24-year-old, then PIF may well turn their attention to another Premier League forward, with the Magpies already keen on the attacker.

Newcastle enquire about 18-goal Premier League striker

According to GiveMeSport, the Magpies have already enquired about the availability of Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke ahead of the summer transfer window, after making contact with their fellow top-flight outfit.

Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke.

The 26-year-old has bagged 18 goals in the Premier League this season, in an unexpected season for Andoni Iraola's side, which sees them occupy a place in the top half of the division.

His most impressive display undoubtedly came in the 3-2 win away at Nottingham Forest in December, with the former Liverpool youngster grabbing his first career hat-trick.

He's also managed to find the back of the net on three occasions against Howe's side during the current campaign, including a double in the meeting at the Vitality Stadium back in November.

Solanke is currently enjoying the best Premier League campaign of his career, with the striker expected to cost any potential buyer a pretty penny in the summer.

Football Insider have reported that the Cherries are set to slap a £50m price tag on the forward's head, with Solanke the perfect replacement for Isak should he leave Tyneside in the coming months.

Why Solanke would be the perfect Isak replacement

Whilst no Newcastle fan would want to lose Isak this summer, they would be in safe hands should they replace him with Solanke during the off-season.

The pair have both excelled in the league, despite being utilised in slightly different ways by their respective managers.

Dominic Solanke scores in Bournemouth's away victory against Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League.

The Magpies forward has been given a free role to create carnage in attacking areas, whilst the Cherries attacker has been more of an out-and-out striker who's scored most of his goals within the 18-yard box.

They both average a similar number of shots per 90, with the pair only separated by 0.1. They've also been nuisances in the opposition penalty area, with Solanke averaging 5.7 touches, compared to Isak's 5.4.

However, the Englishman has dominated in the air in comparison to the Swede, winning 2.6 per 90 – a tally that is over two more than the current Newcastle striker who could only muster 0.3.

Whilst they operate in different ways, Solanke could potentially be the perfect alternative with his poaching instincts seeing him operate in and around the box rather than roaming freely like Isak.

With Anthony Gordon contributing with 11 assists this season, he could take the 26-year-old to the next level with his creativity in the final third playing into the hands of the striker should he move to Tyneside.

Having already plucked Callum Wilson from the Cherries in 2020, the Magpies could be set to raid the Vitality Stadium once again under PIF's watch.
