Journalist claims Leeds keen on securing permanent Rodon deal this month

Earlier this week, Djed Spence made an early return to Tottenham Hotspur after being loaned to Leeds United, with Daniel Farke subsequently hinting that disciplinary concerns were part of Leeds' decision. When asked about the matter in his press conference on Friday, he stressed the importance of "professionalism", "workload on and off the pitch" and "commitment" to the cause.

Another of Leeds' Premier League loanees, Bournemouth's Jaidon Anthony, is set to stay put until the end of the season but has largely been used as a reserve option. While he's made 18 appearances in the Championship this season, only two of those have come from the start.

But the one loanee who's been a resounding success is Joe Rodon, also signed from Spurs on a temporary basis. Rodon has made Farke's XI for 22 out of 26 Championship matches and played every single minute since the start of October.

Rodon deal on the agenda

Now, according to journalist Graeme Bailey, Leeds could try to strike a permanent deal for Rodon this month. While he wouldn't be surprised if the Whites are able to secure his services long-term, Bailey says it isn't at the top of their list of immediate priorities.

"I believe that’s on the agenda, I think it’s something they will look at," he told the One Leeds Fan Channel (via MOT Leeds News). "Do they need to do it in January? I think he’s done well, he’s impressed and Daniel Farke is happy with him, I think it’s on the agenda; I don’t think it’s one that is top of the agenda.

Leeds United's loan defender Joe Rodon.

"[There are] probably some incomings and outgoings they need to do first, but I think that is on the agenda and it wouldn’t surprise me at all if that gets done. I do know it’s one they are looking at."

Rodon a colossus for Leeds

When asked last month if he would prefer his future to be settled in January, Rodon refused to give a direct answer, but vowed to "give everything" to be "as successful as he possibly can" with Leeds, who are battling for promotion back to the Premier League.

It's no surprise that Leeds are keen to make the deal permanent, as Rodon has, to quote journalist Beren Cross, been a "colossal" presence in Farke's backline at times this season. He ranks either first or second in the Leeds squad (as per WhoScored) for successful aerial duels per game (2.6), pass completion (91.4%), long passes (2.4), interceptions (1.4) and clearances (4.2). While you would naturally expect defenders to sit near the top of the list in these categories, this demonstrates the variety of his skillset and shows that he's the rock at the heart of Leeds' defence.

Much, of course, will hinge on the willingness of Spurs to hold negotiations, but a prospective incoming in north London could lend Leeds a hand. Indeed, according to The Athletic, the Lilywhites are in talks over a deal for Radu Dragusin of Genoa, another young centre-back (21).

Ange Postecoglou clearly deemed Rodon surplus to requirements in the summer, and perhaps he could open to a permanent sale if Dragusin joins and pushes him further down the pecking order.

Tom Curran's death bowling could win the World Cup – Jade Dernbach

Surrey’s white-ball captain on the skills and experience required to close out a one-day contest

Andrew Miller12-Apr-2019Jade Dernbach, Surrey’s white-ball captain, says that Tom Curran deserves to make the cut for England’s preliminary World Cup squad, which is due to be announced at Lord’s on Wednesday, purely on the strength of his nerveless attributes as a death bowler.Curran, 24, is one of a host of fast bowlers competing for the final handful of places in England’s squad, alongside the likes of Jofra Archer – who is set to make his international debut in the ODIs against Ireland and Pakistan next month after completing his residency qualification – and Chris Jordan, whose eye-catching display in the T20Is in the Caribbean last month were a timely reminder of his talents. But in Dernbach’s opinion, when it comes to the very specific role of closing out a contest in the final overs of a tense run-chase, none of England’s potential selections currently compares to Curran – a player who has learned and refined many of the skills that earned Dernbach his own England call-up eight years ago.”If there was anyone in the country I’d throw the ball to, I’d back Tom Curran every day of the week,” Dernbach told ESPNcricinfo. “He has an unbelievable skill, he practises unbelievably hard, but the most important thing is he wants the ball.”Curran’s opportunities to date have been limited to 13 ODIs and 10 T20Is since his debut in 2017, and he missed the whole of England’s white-ball campaign last summer due to a side strain. However, he showed what he can do in his third ODI at Perth last year, when he closed out a tense 12-run win over Australia with career-best figures of 5 for 35, including the final two wickets of the match for one run in the space of eight balls.”In those situations, when it comes down to the crunch moment, that’s when you really find out about someone, their true character shines through,” Dernbach said. “And as a young man, to want the ball and do it on the big stage, that says a lot for me.”You may not be successful every day, and that’s the nature of being a death bowler, but to keep putting your hand up, practising your skill, and doing it as he has done for Surrey time and time again, there’s no reason he couldn’t do it on the biggest stage, and I know he would love to.”If you offered him the opportunity now to bowl the last over of the World Cup final, to defend seven or eight, he’ll do it for you. I’d put my mortgage on it.”The issue of English death bowling came back into the spotlight in the IPL on Thursday, when Ben Stokes endured another chastening night – failing to defend 18 off the final over for Rajasthan Royals against Chennai Super Kings, in scenes reminiscent of Carlos Brathwaite’s heist in the final of the World T20 in Kolkata three years ago.Dernbach can sympathise. His England career came to an abrupt end after the team’s elimination from the 2014 World T20 in Bangladesh, but looking back now at the age of 33, he recognises that the ability to bowl a range of variations – including his fabled back-of-the-hand slower ball – counts for little unless it is backed up by tactical nous.Tom Curran celebrates the match-winning wicket•Getty Images

“You see younger and younger guys coming into the game with these skills at their disposal now,” Dernbach said. “But it’s a 360-degree game now, in terms of where batters are capable of hitting you, so just having that skill is not enough. It’s knowing what fields to have when bowling that ball. How to trick batters into thinking you’re going to deliver a certain ball, but then offer something different. That’s where the game has developed, it’s not just the case of having a number of slower balls, it’s when and how to use them.”Or when to not use them at all, as another of England’s fringe candidates, Jordan, demonstrated during his recent matchwinning displays against West Indies. Jordan’s figures of 4 for 6 in the second ODI in St Kitts were notable for the manner in which he attacked the outside edge to exploit helpful conditions, and were a reminder that sometimes old-school methods still have their place in the modern game.”The most difficult ball in the game has always been the one that’s hitting the top of off hard,” Dernbach said. “But I think we probably veered away from that, thinking different balls were the way forward, because we got wrapped up in the unpredictability side of it.”We’ve almost come full circle to think that, if that’s your best ball, then let’s wait for the batter to be able to take it away from you, and then we’ve still got something else to fall back on in slower balls and yorkers.”Dernbach recognises that his own international days are long gone, but has no doubt that he is a better bowler now than he was as the raw talent who made his debut as a virtual unknown against Sri Lanka in June 2011.”It’s something I’ve learnt over a long period of time, having probably been a bit mixed with my thoughts and emotions at the end of my mark in the past,” he said. “It’s been about getting a balance between what people expect me to bowl, and really trusting in what I think the situation requires me to bowl.”That’s the key to experience. At the end of your mark you’ll get a feel for what you think you should do, so you set the field appropriately, and then put 100 percent backing into the ball you want to deliver.”If you nail your yorker but the batsman gets down and laps you over the keeper, there’s nothing you can do. It may look disappointing, but that’s just the way it goes, because sometimes someone is allowed to be better than you. That’s the key to sports.”But if you know that you’ve practised enough, and the moment comes to bring out that back-of-the-hand slower ball, and deliver it on fifth stump to turn away from someone trying to hit me over midwicket, if I am comfortable with it, there’s no reason I can’t do my part as well as I can in the last over.”It’s the same with the yorker. It comes down to confidence, and what you believe you can deliver. If you’ve practise thousands and thousands of times, then it’s not going to be about any lack of ability. Sometimes the situation gets the better of us, but if you can remain clear and back that skill, nine times out of ten you’ll probably nail it.”And it is for such reasons why Dernbach is cautious about endorsing the selection of Archer, a cricketer of massive potential, but who has played just 14 List A games in the course of his career. Instead he believes England would be better off sticking to players who have already been tried and tested in the 50-over format.”England are talking about selecting Archer, but his only real success has come in 20-over cricket. I’d say we’ve got a ready-made Jofra Archer in Chris Jordan. He’s had plenty of international experience, he’s been around the world in the T20 leagues and played 50-over as well, as has Tom.”Jordan, for me, is a fantastic bowler, a guy who has all the skills, has been around the world and been successful. I played with him in the T10 before Christmas, and his ability to deliver the exact skill necessary was quite remarkable. He’s the epitome of what you want your one-day bowler to be. He’s got pace, he will trouble you if he needs to go short, he’s a great example of that.”World Cups are pressurised situations in their own right, let alone bringing people in who haven’t played a lot of that version. You want people who’ve been involved in 50-over cricket before, and have earned the right to bring the World Cup home.”

Atacante Bruno Kiper projeta estreia do Macaé no Campeonato Carioca

No Bailey or Carlos & "phenom" lined up in Aston Villa’s dream XI after January

Aston Villa supporters have certainly endured an interesting journey over the last decade or so, witnessing the drama of relegation, promotion and the battle for survival, to now being genuine title contenders in the Premier League.

The days under Tim Sherwood, Remi Garde and Steve Bruce et al all seem so long ago such is the success that current boss Unai Emery is enjoying at the helm, the Spaniard steering his side into Europe last term, before kicking on again this time around.

With Champions League qualification a very real possibility come the end of the season, the Villans can not rest on their laurels despite the stunning strides that have been made of late, with the Midlands side wise to push for quality reinforcements before the window closes later this month.

Strengthening at full-back, in particular, appears to be a real priority for Emery and co, while further attacking additions can also not be ruled out, with there potentially set to be a different look to the club's starting XI come the end of January, if a handful of deals are to be done…

1 GK – Emi Martinez

While there has been reported interest in the World Cup winner in recent times, Villa are highly unlikely to sanction the sale of their first-choice stopper midway through the campaign, with the Argentine still an integral figure having kept five clean sheets in the league so far.

2 RB – Jeremie Frimpong

Bayer Leverkusen star Jeremie Frimpong.

The first new addition could well arrive at right-back in the form of Jeremie Frimpong, with journalist Dean Jones revealing that the Bayer Leverkusen star is a "genuine" target for the high-flying outfit.

With 17 goals and assists to his name this season in all competitions, the Dutchman would be a fine replacement for Matty Cash in that wide berth, with the latter man having even lost his place to usual centre-back Ezri Konsa on occasion this season.

3 CB – Ezri Konsa

Ezri Konsa

Speaking of Konsa, the Englishman would seemingly slot back in at centre-back if Frimpong was to be signed, with the former Brentford man deserving of the nod ahead of Diego Carlos, having been "so consistent" in recent years – according to former Villa man, John Terry.

Now on Gareth Southgate's radar at international level, having earned a first Three Lions call-up in November, the 26-year-old is truly flourishing under the Emery regime.

4 CB – Pau Torres

While Clement Lenglet has proven an able deputy of late, it is Pau Torres who is the undisputed first-choice option at left centre-back, having been prised from Emery's former club Villarreal on a £33m deal over the summer.

Described as "absolutely magnificent" by pundit Pat Nevin following the win over champions Manchester City last month, the Spaniard has been a key cog in a defence that has shipped just 27 league goals – the fourth-best record in the division.

5 LB – Marcus Acuna

Sevilla defenderMarcos Acuna.

As per The Athletic, alongside looking at Frimpong, the Villans also have their eye on Sevilla full-back, Marcus Acuna, with the 32-year-old having been part of the Argentina squad – alongside Martinez – that claimed World Cup glory in Qatar.

With reports suggesting Lucas Digne could be on his way, amid Saudi interest, Acuna could represent a perfect rival for Alex Moreno on the left flank, having been hailed as a "top defender" by City boss, Pep Guardiola last year.

6 CM – Douglas Luiz

Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz

While the likes of Liverpool and Barcelona are said to be circling for his signature at present, it is unlikely that the Brazilian will be on the move this month, ensuring he can continue his fine season in claret and blue – having registered 13 goals and assists in all competitions.

A key cog in Emery's relentless machine, the 25-year-old is set to command a sizeable fee if he is to later depart at the end of the season, with an £80m price tag having previously been suggested.

7 CM – Boubacar Kamara

The former Marseille man – who was snapped up on a free transfer in 2022 – has missed just four league games this season, all through suspension, with the remaining 17 appearances all coming from the start, highlighting his importance in the spine of the side.

8 RM – Moussa Diaby

Despite lining up as a second striker in recent times, Moussa Diaby could be relocated onto the right flank once again in order to revive his sparkling connection with ex-teammate Frimpong – having scored 14 goals and registered 11 assists in all competitions for Leverkusen last term.

The possibility to utilise that blossoming partnership could then see Leon Bailey ousted from the starting lineup, even though the Jamaican star does have nine goals and eight assists to his name across all fronts this term.

9 LM – John McGinn

John-mcginn-aston-villa

Villa's super skipper is a nailed-on starter under Emery on the left flank, impressively leading from the front with seven goals and four assists in 2023/24.

While pressure will be applied to his position in the years to come amid the presence of Jacob Ramsey and Nicolo Zaniolo, for now, the Scotsman remains the club's 'Mr Reliable'.

10 ST – Ollie Watkins

While McGinn may be thriving as captain, it is Ollie Watkins who is Emery's undoubted talisman these days, having already registered 24 goal involvements this season – 19 of which have come in the top-flight.

A return of just one goal from his last seven league games has somewhat halted the Englishman's momentum, although as his brace of assists against Burnley showcased, there is so much more to Watkins' game than merely putting the ball in the back of the net.

Chris Jordan, Ben Brown pass 150 unbeaten to rescue Sussex

Visitors were 68 for 6 before pair saved the day in style

If Chris Jordan was feeling frustrated at watching his slim chance of making the cut for England’s World Cup squad disappear before his eyes over the past two weeks, then there are not many better ways in which he could have got it out of his system. His career-best unbeaten 158, the third century of his career, was an essay in controlled aggression, occasionally risky but never irresponsibly so, and with no leaping around punching the air as he ran the single that took him to his century or after the magnificent straight drive that took him past 150 in the midst of a wonderful record-breaking partnership with Ben Brown, who finished 10 short of his career-best on 153 not out.Yet you sensed he must have been feeling a particular kind of satisfaction at that moment, one borne of being selected for the one-day series against Pakistan that ended on Sunday – a chance, he must have thought, to make a late claim for a World Cup place – only to play no part, beyond being a substitute fielder. His response here, then, was hugely impressive, not least to his teammates, who watched with growing appreciation as he and his captain repaired the damage of a dreadful morning that had seen them lurch from 20 without loss to 68 for 6.”It can be a little bit frustrating to be with England like that and not get a game,” Jordan said afterwards.”But I tend to take the positives from a situation and the fact of the matter is that I had not been called up to that 50-over squad for three years so it means I am getting close again. Unfortunately I was not able to get a go but the boys are in great shape for the World Cup and it is good to be playing cricket again with Sussex.”Going out to bat at 68 for 6, Jordan said, was “not ideal”. Brown will certainly have concurred. During that torrid passage, he must have wondered what he was thinking when he looked at a green-tinged pitch before play and decided he wanted to bat. More so when the toss went against him and his opposite number said he was happy for him to do so.Alex Wakely was clearly spot-on about the conditions favouring his bowlers, the ball moving in the air and some nipping away off the pitch too. Moreover, several Sussex batsmen played some pretty woeful shots, as if disoriented to be batting.Ben Sanderson inflicted the first blows, taking three for none in 10 deliveries as Phil Salt lost his off stump, Tom Haines skewed one to point off a leading edge and Stiann Van Zyl drove loosely to mid-off.Luke Wells got a good one from Luke Procter that zipped away and took the edge, Adam Rossington taking a tumbling catch in front of slip, but Harry Finch did not offer a shot to the ball from Nathan Buck that literally broke his middle stump and David Wiese, who had been in excellent form in 50-over cricket, was bowled by a fullish delivery from Jamie Overton, the Somerset bowler who is here on loan, without scoring.Jordan, in fact, was a little fortunate not to go the same way, the ball flying between ‘keeper and first slip as he tried to jam the bat down on another Overton delivery that was well pitched up.From a Sussex viewpoint, it was the last scare before lunch. Nonetheless, 77 for 6 was a test for their digestion. No one could have imagined 370 for 6 at the close, yet from thereon in, Jordan and Brown reigned supreme. That is not to say that nothing troubled them. There was still something in the pitch, clearly, and neither batsman was immune from playing and missing. Yet Jordan, in particular, looked confident, punching boundaries both sides of the wicket and driving forcefully if Northamptonshire’s bowlers strayed in length or line, and the presence at the other end of a batsman with a very different style was certainly a factor in making that happen quite regularly.”We have batted together a few times and we tried to rotate the strike,” Jordan said. “We hit the ball in different areas and that makes it difficult for bowlers to settle on one length or one line.”Brown hit 20 boundaries, Jordan 24, the most thrilling of which came towards the close as he drove Procter straight down the ground three times in the same over, the third of them taking him past 150.”We did not get that many balls to hit down the ground so it felt good at the time and I’m grateful to get a personal best,” he added. The partnership is the highest conceded by any Northamptonshire side for the fifth wicket and the second-highest scored by a Sussex partnership, the highest being 344 by K S Ranjitsinhji and Billy Newham against Essex at Leyton in 1902, which was the highest by any side in the County Championship until Jonny Bairstow and Tim Bresnan put on 366 for Yorkshire against Durham at Chester-le-Street in 2015.That mark could yet be under threat.
