England fast bowler Liam Plunkett has been signed by Melbourne Stars as a replacement for legspinner Matt Parkinson who has been ruled out of the BBL with a back injury.Parkinson, who plays for Lancashire, had been withdrawn from the England Lions tour of the UAE after scans showed up a stress fracture and he has not recovered enough to take up his Stars deal.Plunkett is a key member of England’s white-ball sides and will share overseas duties with Nepal legspinner Sandeep Lamichhane. The Stars have also signed Dwayne Bravo for the duration of the tournament.Plunkett’s next international commitment is likely to be England’s one-day series against West Indies which starts on February 20. There is a warm-up match scheduled for February 18, the day after the BBL final, so depending on how far the Stars progress in the tournament his availability could be restricted in the closing stages.Melbourne Stars squad Michael Beer, Jackson Bird, Scott Boland, Liam Bowe, Dwayne Bravo, Jackson Coleman, Travis Dean, Ben Dunk, Seb Gotch, Evan Gulbis, Peter Handscomb, Sandeep Lamichhane, Nic Maddinson, Glenn Maxwell, Jonathan Merlo, Liam Plunkett, Marcus Stoinis, Daniel Worrall, Adam Zampa

Ten Hag can upgrade on Man Utd defensive duo by signing £60m "tank"

Manchester United have been a total enigma so far this season; they stand on the verge of an early exit from the Champions League, they have played out some genuinely shocking defeats in the Premier League, and rival fans seem giddy at the prospect of Erik ten Hag losing his job.

However, with 15 league games played, they are somehow just three points behind defending champions Manchester City and look like they could now mount a serious charge for the European places following their comprehensive victory over Chelsea on Wednesday evening.

The Red Devils could potentially be on the long road back to recovery, and while the previously derided defensive pairing of Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof have done an admirable job to get them there, Ten Hag should really be looking to upgrade them in 2024 – the pair having both been tipped for an exit over the summer.

Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.

Luckily enough, it appears as if that is precisely what the club are planning to do, as the three-time European champions have recently been linked to Crystal Palace's vice-captain, Marc Guehi.

Manchester United transfer news – Marc Guehi

According to Football Insider, Manchester United have made Guehi their 'number one target' for the January transfer window.

The 23-year-old is currently on £50k-per-week at Selhurst Park, and with his contract set to expire in 2026, the Eagles are reportedly sounding out his interest in signing a new deal to see him remain in south London well past that date.

The former Chelsea man joined Palace in 2021 for a fee in the region of £20m, but it will reportedly cost three times as much for the Red Devils to sign him as the required fee is said to be in the region of £60m.

While that is undoubtedly a significant asking price, the performances of the "absolute tank", as described by former England U21 goalkeeper Josef Bursik, in the last couple of years more than justify it.

How Guehi compares to Maguire and Lindelof

The first thing to note is that Maguire and Lindelof have looked significantly better this year and have subsequently played themselves into the team far more than most would have expected prior to the season.

They have still made mistakes; there is no getting away from that, but they have partially rebuilt their reputations – Maguire, in particular, after winning November's Premier League Player of the Month award.

However, if United really want to progress and get back to where they deserve to be, where they should be, they must move on and improve upon both defenders. Which is where Guehi comes in.

The Palace vice-captain is still just 23 years old but has already accrued significant top-flight and international experience. He has been consistently impressive for Roy Hodgson's side and comes out on top in several key statistics.

The 'brilliant' centre-back, as described by BBC Sport pundit Garth Crooks, wins more tackles, makes more clearances, and recovers more balls, all while committing considerably fewer fouls than his competition.

Additionally, while the Swedish international has the most accurate passing of them all, Guehi is only marginally less precise, suggesting that he could adapt to a more adventurous style of play at the Theatre of Dreams.

Finally, while there are plenty of footballing reasons to sign the Palace defender in January, there is also a fairly significant financial one.

Combined, Maguire and Lindelof earn a whopping £310k-per-week in Manchester, and while the Abidjan-born wall would make a pretty penny in red, the wage bill would be significantly healthier.

Avanti, Abel!

Farke could land lethal Rutter partner in Leeds move for £16k-p/w whiz

The January transfer window is just around the corner and it will be interesting to see whether or not Leeds United do any business next month.

German head coach Daniel Farke is tasked with leading the Whites back to the Premier League at the first time of asking after their relegation from the top-flight under Sam Allardyce earlier this year.

His team are currently third in the Championship and seven points off the automatic promotion places as it stands, which shows that they are competing for a top two spot but still have some way to go before they can believe that it is a realistic goal.

Leeds United manager Daniel Farke.

Therefore, the ex-Norwich City and Borussia Monchengladbach tactician may want to dip into the market to bolster his side to give them a better chance of closing that gap to move ahead of Ipswich Town and Leicester City.

Angus Kinnear has confirmed that there is wiggle room for the club to make further additions to the playing squad if the manager feels the need is there to do so.

This comes after Farke was allowed to bring in nine new signings during his first window in charge; including Sam Byram, Ethan Ampadu, Karl Darlow, Ilia Gruev, Joel Piroe, Djed Spence, Jaidon Anthony, Joe Rodon and Glen Kamara.

Leeds transfer news – David Turnbull

Ahead of the January transfer window, the Whites have been named as a possible landing spot for Celtic attacking midfielder David Turnbull.

Speaking on Go Radio this month (via HITC), pundit and former Hoops centre-forward John Hartson has claimed that he could see the Scotland international moving to a 'top' Championship club "like a Leeds United".

The 24-year-old whiz is out of contract at the end of the current campaign and this means that the Whites could swoop in to secure a pre-contract deal ahead of next summer or look to snap him up for a cut-price deal in January.

However, any such plans would be ruined if the Scottish giants decide to agree a contract extension with the talented wizard between now and the turn of the year.

Celtic midfielder David Turnbull.

Whilst it may seem to be a random comment for Hartson to make, as Leeds have not been linked with any real interest in Turnbull, it would make some sense when you consider that Farke was once close to signing him during his time at Norwich.

In the summer of 2019, the German head coach attempted to sign the young talent from Motherwell and the Canaries had a bid of £3.25m accepted by the Premiership side.

However, he turned down the move to Carrow Road and opted to complete a transfer to Celtic instead. It was reported that the player turned down higher wages in England to join the Hoops due to footballing reasons.

Norwich had been promoted to the Premier League ahead of that summer and Turnbull would have been fighting against relegation instead of competing for trophies, which is what he has been doing over the last few years in Glasgow.

This suggests that Farke is, or at least was, a big fan of the player and he must now reignite that interest to secure a deal for him in January as the impressive ace could be a lethal partner for Georgino Rutter.

Rutter's season in numbers

The current Leeds star has been in phenomenal form in the Championship so far this season as a centre-forward who can link play brilliantly to create huge opportunities for his fellow forwards on a regular basis.

Farke has managed to get the best out of the French dynamo, who joined from Hoffenheim in January of this year, after his struggles under the previous managers in the Premier League last term.

Rutter has racked up an eye-catching four goals, seven assists, and 16 'big chances' created in 17 league starts for the Whites so far this season.

He currently ranks within the top 1% of Championship forwards for Expected Assisted Goals (0.45), assists (0.43, and shot-creating actions (4.59) per 90 this term.

Leeds forward Georginio Rutter.

This shows that he has been an outstanding creator within the division as the 21-year-old star has consistently split open opposition defences to create chances for his teammates to score from.

His sublime creativity could make him a lethal partner for Turnbull at the top end of the pitch as the Celtic gem could be an excellent alternative number ten option to Joel Piroe.

The statistics that show why Leeds should sign Turnbull

The 24-year-old number ten is a goalscoring midfielder who also has the quality to create chances at an impressive rate, which makes him a different type of player to the club's current star in that role.

Piroe has managed eight goals in 19 Championship starts this season, although three of those appearances came at Swansea, but he has only created one 'big chance' for his fellow forwards.

David Turnbull in action for Celtic.

He is a natural centre-forward who has been deployed in a deeper role and has not offered much in the way of creativity, whereas Turnbull is more of a traditional attacking midfielder.

That is not to say one is better than the other but variety can provide opposition teams with different problems to deal with, which is why the Hoops gem could be an excellent signing to add competition and quality to the squad.

Turnbull has scored seven goals and created four 'big chances' for Celtic in eight Scottish Premiership starts and 12 league appearances in total this season.

The £16k-per-week magician produced ten goals and 12 'big chances' created in 26 league starts over the previous two top-flight campaigns combined.

He averaged between 2.9 and 3.2 key passes per game across the 2020/21 and 2021/22 league seasons for Celtic, and Crysencio Summerville (three) is the only Leeds player with more than 2.3 per match this term in the Championship.

Turnbull, who was hailed as "excellent" by boss Brendan Rodgers earlier this season, has the goal record to suggest that he has the quality to finish off the chances that Rutter can create, and the creative attributes to break down opposition defences to set-up the club's other forwards.

Therefore, the pairing could be a lethal one for Leeds as they both have the ability to be outstanding creators who can also chip in with goals to punish teams in the final third.

PCB's case against BCCI dismissed by ICC dispute panel

The ICC said the judgement was “binding and non-appealable”

Nagraj Gollapudi20-Nov-2018

India and Pakistan fans revel before the first ball•Associated Press

The PCB’s attempts to claim damages worth USD 63 million from the BCCI have met with what is now a final failure: the ICC’s Dispute Resolution Committee (DRC) rejected the PCB’s claim that the BCCI’s failure to honour an agreement to play bilateral series in 2014 and 2015 was a legal breach. The three-person DRC said the claim “must fail” because the agreement signed between the boards carried a “moral obligation” but not a legal one. That will not be the PCB’s only defeat. As is the norm in arbitration cases such as this, the party that loses the case usually ends up paying the costs for the proceedings, and the BCCI confirmed that it would seek legal costs from the PCB. “After hearing the evidence and arguments of the parties over three days in Dubai, the Dispute Panel by its award published today has rejected all of the PCB’s contentions and accepted the BCCI’s case inter alia on the ground that the BCCI Letter was non-binding and merely expressed an intention to play,” the BCCI said in a statement. “The BCCI wholeheartedly welcomes the decision of the Dispute Panel. The BCCI will now move the Dispute Panel to recover its legal cost from the PCB.”In a brief initial response, the PCB said it noted the DRC decision with “regret” and “disappointment.” The PCB also said it would “determine its future course of action” after consultations with its members, but the ICC made it clear that the DRC’s judgement was “binding and non-appealable”.The panel, comprising Michael Beloff, Jan Paulsson and Dr Annabelle Bennett, conducted hearings between October 1-3 with several officials from both boards as well as senior ICC officials attending. The central question the DRC had to consider was whether the BCCI had indeed breached the agreement to play seven bilateral series between 2014 and 2023. Two of those “designated” tours were to be home series hosted by Pakistan scheduled for November 2014 and December 2015, both of which did not take place, and for which the PCB claimed damages.Ultimately, the case hinged on how the DRC viewed the agreement the two boards signed on April 9, 2014 – an agreement, incidentally, signed in the chaotic days of the Big Three governance reforms. The PCB’s contention was that it was legally binding, an argument which, at various points in its 26-page judgment, the DRC appeared to think was sustainable; the BCCI argued that it was not and that it was only one step in a process that would lead to bilateral tours. That letter was signed by Sanjay Patel, then BCCI secretary, and Najam Sethi, who was the PCB chairman in 2014. That draft agreement was a result of PCB’s conditional support of Big Three governance changes (the Big-Three model was eventually reversed by the ICC).The DRC quickly concluded that both boards were at “cross purposes”. The BCCI said the agreement was the first step which involved boards proposing dates, followed by a second step where member boards agreed to an FTP schedule for the commercial cycle 2015-23, and a final step involving member boards entering into bilateral FTP agreements in accordance with that schedule. The PCB, however, considered the April letter to be, “in itself”, legally binding, and “any subsequent FTP Agreement to be no more than a formality, ‘a routine matter’, as Mr Sethi for the PCB put it in his oral evidence.”However, it would not have helped the PCB’s case that they sent the BCCI a draft long-form FTP agreement in June 2014, which was never signed, but which could imply that the PCB itself recognised the need for further steps after the April letter. And in an internal PCB board meeting, members were told that an MoU had been agreed but that a “legally binding agreement will subsequently be signed” – the implication again that the April agreement was not so.The DRC rejected the PCB’s claim that the April letter was a “quid pro quo” for its support to the Big Three’s attempts to overhaul the ICC’s governance and financial structures. The DRC pointed out that it was not the BCCI, but in fact, Cricket Australia and the ECB that had told the PCB they would not sign FTP agreements if the PCB did not agree to the Big Three model. But the complexities of the matter were apparent in the judgment, with the DRC rejecting the BCCI argument that the April letter was “uncertain and incomplete” and “therefore could not be contractually binding.” It was “a difficult argument to sustain (and one which the Panel rejects) for various reasons including BCCI approving bilateral tours without FTP agreements.”Their conclusion, eventually, fell against the PCB’s claims on a line of argument raised by the current ICC chairman, Shashank Manohar. The April 9 agreement, according to the DRC, was at most a “letter of intent”. If seen through a “microscope” the DRC said the PCB argument that the letter was a binding agreement “burns bright.” But if a “telescope is deployed”, and a broader take is considered, the argument is “extinguished.””In the Panel’s view, the reasonable observer apprised of all the facts would conclude that the April Letter was no more than a declaration of intent, albeit an intent sincerely held by the BCCI (and of course by the PCB) at most, as Mr [Shashank] Manohar (President of the BCCI from October 2015 to May 2016) put it, creating a “moral obligation” but not a legal one. Context trumps text.”

Bumrah finishes with nine as India retain Border-Gavaskar trophy

After rain delayed the final day in Melbourne, India needed just 27 balls to wrap up victory

Andrew McGlashan29-Dec-2018The first session was washed out, Google Trends for ‘Melbourne weather’ from India went through the roof but in the end, it took them just 27 balls to retain the Border-Gavaskar trophy.Jasprit Bumrah claimed his ninth wicket of the match, the first India quick to reach such heights in Australia, when Pat Cummins’ fine innings ended with a catch to first slip. Then in the next over, Ishant Sharma found Nathan Lyon’s top edge as he hooked and with that, it was all over.”The credit has to go to our bowlers, especially Jasprit, they have been outstanding,” Kohli said after the game. “The way Jasprit bowled in Perth it was almost criminal not to get wickets, but the management told him they would come in bunches.”Australia had managed to take the match into the final day and the first part of Sunday was spent with the teams kicking their heels in the dressing room as showers scudded across the ground. Any early lunch was taken at 12.15pm but during the interval, the skies cleared to allow India to resume their quest. The new-ball was only five overs old and was in the hands of Ishant and Bumrah, the latter immediately making life uncomfortable with his angle and bounce as he has throughout the match.Cummins had put Australia’s top order to shame with his display, but hopes of a maiden Test hundred – or something even greater – vanished when Bumrah found the outside edge and Cheteshwar Pujara, the man who set this all up for India, grasped a good low catch at first slip. There was no final-wicket stand to annoy India when Ishant sent down a bouncer to Lyon who hooked and sent the top edge to Rishabh Pant to allow the celebrations to begin. The Border-Gavaskar trophy has been retained, a wonderful end to 2018 for India, but an even bigger prize awaits in Sydney at the start of the New Year. “Nothing will distract us from winning that last Test,” Kohli said, “we’ve worked really hard for this.”
