Everton could sign Harrison upgrade in £13m "magician"

If Everton need to strengthen one position in the upcoming January transfer window, it's their forward line.

Despite splashing the cash on several attacking players in the summer, as Beto, Chermiti, Arnaut Danjuma and Jack Harrison were all brought to Goodison Park, the same problems in front of goal still remain.

Whilst the Toffees have accumulated an xG of 19.01 across their matches so far, as per Understat, placing them in ninth position for that statistic, only six sides have scored fewer goals than Everton's tally of 11.

Three of those teams, Sheffield United, Fulham and Bournemouth, are tied on nine goals respectively, which suggests Sean Dyche's side are one of the worst teams in the league at taking their chances. How they wished they signed Viktor Gyokeres…

When Everton tried to sign Viktor Gyokeres

Following the news that Everton's prospective new owners, 777 Partners, have been given the all-clear from the Football Association to assume executive leadership roles at the Merseyside club once their takeover is complete, Dyche could be provided with funds to bolster his squad in January.

It is clear, especially from the statistics above, that the Merseyside giants are crying out for some added guile, creativity and firepower in the final third.

Viktor Gyokeres

Dyche attempted to fix that problem earlier on in the summer by prising Viktor Gyokeres away from Coventry City.

The Swedish marksman, who fired the Sky Blues to the Championship play-off final last term, made a switch to Sporting CP as the Toffees and Newcastle missed out on a deal for the forward.

It was reported by the Portuguese outlet Record [via the Liverpool Echo] that Everton didn't trigger their asking price for the striker, seeing their offer of €17m plus €3m in bonus rebuffed, with Coventry demanding a fee closer to €20m.

The club instead captured Beto for £25.75m from Udinese, however, the Portuguese powerhouse hasn't torn up many trees at Goodison Park, scoring just once, which is why the hunt for more attacking talent rumbles on.

Everton transfer news – Maximiliano Araujo

According to Football Transfers, a new name has popped up on Everton's radar as the club pursues a move for Toluca wide player Maximiliano Araujo in January.

The 23-year-old, who has been capped six times by Uruguay, is currently plying his trade in Mexico and is also said to be admired by La Liga side Real Betis.

The report details that the Toffees' interest comes after their pursuit of Leeds United's Wilfried Gnonto and Luis Sinisterra failed over the summer.

Araujo is currently valued at £13m (€15m), as per Football Observatory, and could offer Dyche with sought-after versatility having played as a left-back on numerous occasions for his club this term.

Maximiliano Araujo's career statistics

In the 2023/24 campaign so far, Araujo has appeared 15 times for Toluca, scoring twice and supplying one assist. Since arriving at the club in January, his record in total is eight goals and six assists from 37 appearances. Not bad numbers at all.

The fleet-footed wide player has impressed many with his versatility, operating exceptionally as a left back on eight occasions this term while turning his opponents inside out with his pace and trickery on the left flank, appearing five times as a left winger.

Araujo – dubbed a "magician" by one South American football expert – has become an unstoppable force down the left for his club and translated that mantra across to international football last month as he supplied the assist for Darwin Nunez's winning goal against Brazil, with Uruguay recording their first victory over the South American giants in 22 years.

Whilst this famous win strengthened their grip on World Cup qualification, it also provided the masses with the capabilities of the Toluca attacker on the world stage, having previously displayed an abundance of his attacking qualities at club level.

When comparing several of his attacking metrics, including his non-penalty xG, progressive carries and successful take-ons against midfielders across leagues most similar to Mexico's top division over the last 365 days, the 23-year-old has really illuminated his presence as a driving force at that level.

A ball-carrying phenom, who has supplied a consistent threat in the final third, could be a huge upgrade on Everton's current wideman, Harrison.

How Araujo compares to Jack Harrison

Harrison was captured on loan from Leeds United in the summer and his start to life at Goodison Park has been littered with inconsistency.

The 26-year-old was scintillating in the victory against Bournemouth as he registered a goal and an assist, however, his display against Brighton on Saturday was terrible.

According to Sofascore, the Englishman only completed 21% of his passes, lost possession 17 times and provided next to no spark in the attacking phase, completing zero crosses, dribbles and shots on target.

While the distinct lack of goal threat doesn't just fall at the feet of Harrison, he has to provide more quality, and that is something Araujo has provided in abundance as of late.

That is best illuminated by his attacking metrics in the past year with Araujo recording 4.31 progressive carries, 2.55 successful take-ons, 3.48 shot-creating actions and 3.34 carries into the final third, as per FBref.

Harrison, by comparison, has seen his attacking output decline in recent times, having only recorded 1.91 carries into the final third, 1.36 successful take-ons and 3.36 shot-creating actions.

Although the Uruguayan has been plying his trade in a division with much lesser quality than the Premier League, he could provide Everton with the explosive spark that has been missing on the counter-attack, while supplying Dominic Calvert-Lewin with the ammunition to fire in goals.

After all, several gems – who originally began plying their trade in Mexico's top division – have shot to stardom on English shores, including Carlos Vela, Javier Hernandez and Raul Jimenez.

If Dyche can land a deal for this explosive Uruguayan who has taken South America by storm, he could be the latest Liga MX export to unleash his talents in the Premier League.

Moyes could sign a big Aguerd upgrade in West Ham swoop for "exceptional" £52.5m star

West Ham United ended their five-game winless streak on Sunday by coming from behind to beat Nottingham Forest 3-2.

Goals from Lucas Paqueta, Jarrod Bowen and Tomas Soucek secured a much-needed three points after a tricky spell in the Premier League.

While the Hammers are flying in the Carabao Cup and Europa League – through to the quarter-finals and one win away from the knockout stages, respectively – the pressure has still been ramped up on David Moyes for their poor league form.

The Scot will be hoping that Soucek's dramatic late winner is the catalyst for improved fortunes in the top flight as they aim to push towards the European places.

Currently four points behind sixth-place Manchester United, Moyes is crying out for some reinforcements to bolster his squad in January and while signing a striker is a priority, links have been drawn to one of the finest young centre-backs on the planet.

West Ham transfer news – Goncalo Inacio

West Ham are one of several clubs, including Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal, seemingly interested in signing Sporting Lisbon centre-back Goncalo Inacio, as per 90min.

Scouts from the London Stadium were present to spy on three players during Benfica’s recent 2-1 victory over their rivals Sporting Lisbon.

The report states that the Hammers are keeping tabs on Sporting’s Inacio and Benfica’s Joao Neves and Antonio Silva, although numerous scouts from their Premier League rivals were in attendance.

Goncalo Inacio, defender for Sporting CP

It was an embarrassing night for Inacio, who was sent off six minutes into the second half, with the centre-back shown a second yellow card for a foul on Rafa Silva.

While that performance won't put the Irons off in their pursuit of the talented 21-year-old, they will have to act fast to beat off a whole host of competition, with Man United currently in the driving seat.

According to reports in Portugal, the Red Devils are reportedly 'ready to activate' his €60m (£53m) release clause to beat off stiff competition from Liverpool and Real Madrid.

If West Ham were to upset the apple cart by launching a bid of their own for the jewel in Sporting's crown, he would represent a huge upgrade on current left-sided defender, Nayef Aguerd.

How Goncalo Inacio compares to Nayef Aguerd

A technically gifted left-footed centre-back, who is comfortable at driving out from defence with the ball, Inacio's ball-playing ability is crucial in the build-up phase of attacks.

Described by journalist Antonio Mango as "exceptional" for how he dictates possession from the back, the 6 foot 1 titan boasts an exquisite passing range that has stood out in Portugal and is why several European powerhouses are interested in luring him away from Sporting.

In the modern game, you rarely see any big club deviate from a style that requires progressing play from defence and controlling the tempo of the game with possession.

If West Ham were to capture the highly-rated youngster, they'd have a partner for Kurt Zouma who could help them transition into a team that is more comfortable at launching attacks from their own defensive third, replacing Aguerd in the process.

As the table above delineates, Inacio is much better at progressing play from defence, driving forward with the ball and picking out a pass than Aguerd, while the Moroccan international is perhaps more physically commanding and dominant in the air.

If Moyes wants to make the seamless transition towards a more possession-based system given the array of technical talent he has at his disposal, he should look no further than Inacio to carry the Irons towards a brighter future.

Moeen Ali ready to embrace expectation in Sri Lanka

Spin is likely to play a key part of the one-day series and Moeen Ali settled into his work nicely with a three-wicket haul

Andrew Fidel Fernando05-Oct-2018

Moeen Ali had a good day with the ball•Getty Images

England haven’t had a full tour of Sri Lanka since 2012, and though for many in their squad the heat and humidity are a fresh experience, Moeen Ali has done it all before – twice.Moeen was part of England’s 2014 seven-ODI tour of the island of course – the tour in which it was England, not Sri Lanka, who had the captaincy crisis, and the poor one-day record, and the terrible run leading up to the following year’s World Cup. But even before then, Moeen had had a bite of the island’s conditions. Folks at the Moors Sports Club in central Colombo will tell you that in early 2012, Moeen played three three-day matches for the club. He had been pretty good for them too, racking up 335 runs at an average of 67, in addition taking the occasional wicket.Six years later, a much-improved Moeen is back in Colombo, and he knows he is one of England’s key players on tour. As a spin-bowling allrounder, he will be expected to make an impact with the ball as well. If Friday’s practice match is any evidence, he appears poised for a decent haul. Moeen claimed 3 for 42 with his offspin, before England sauntered to a 43-run Duckworth-Lewis victory.”It’s always nice to tour somewhere where you think you’re going to play a big role – it does give you that extra bit more,” he said. “It’s never a guarantee that you’re going to go well. I’ve had that experience as well, going to India and stuff. You’ve got to stay calm about it – can’t get too far ahead.”All three of his wickets were high-quality players. First he bowled opener Lahiru Thirimanne, who was in the Sri Lanka Test team last time the toured England. Two balls later, he dismissed the other opener Dimuth Karunaratne, who is the form batsman in Sri Lanka’s Test side at present. Then later, he took the wicket of Kusal Mendis, whom he will likely bowl at again in the Tests. Moeen’s bowling helped restrict the Board XI to 287 for 9.”It’s good for my own confidence to get a couple of wickets up front against two of their more international type of players,” Moeen said of his double-strike in the ninth over of the innings. “It was nice to get them in the Powerplay. These guys are used to these conditions, and they are good players in these conditions. It’s not going to be as easy as people think, but as a spinner you do have things in your favour, and that always helps.”I thought we bowled well as a team to keep them down – it was a very good wicket. It was nice to come out and break that partnership initially and then to get the other guy out. It was good for your confidence.”That Moeen did not get to bat in the first practice match was partly because Joe Root and Eoin Morgan simply did not get out. The two senior batsmen put on 174 for the third wicket to secure an important first victory of the tour, for England. Moeen said he especially enjoyed Morgan’s 91 not out off 84 balls.”He’s a fantastic player of spin, and I personally love the way he plays when he plays like this – with intent. It’s great to see some of the shots that he played today.”Moeen said there was intent through the whole England performance as well. As the top-ranked ODI side, they wanted to flex their muscles in the first outing on the island.”As the No. 1 side now, you don’t want to come here and start with a loss, especially to a side that’s not their main side. The philosophy that Trev and Morg have tried to emphasise is that we need to win these games quite comfortably. As a side you don’t want to stumble.”

England unchanged as fit-again Jonny Bairstow misses out

Ben Stokes will bat at No. 3 and Jos Buttler at No. 5, with Jonny Bairstow left out despite returning to fitness

George Dobell in Pallekele13-Nov-2018England have confirmed an unchanged team for the second Test in Pallekele. Ben Stokes will bat at No. 3 in place of Moeen Ali, who endured a poor Test with the bat in Galle and will drop to No. 6.Stokes’ technique – and, increasingly, his temperament – are rated highly by the England management. While there was some consideration to his workload, given he will be expected to inject some pace into the England bowling attack and also field in the cordon to the seamers and at slip to the spinners, he was ultimately considered more suited to the No. 3 position than Jos Buttler, who will bat at No. 5.Joe Root has stressed, however, that the batting order should be viewed as somewhat flexible. Buttler was scheduled to come in at No. 3 in Galle if England had bowled first in order to provide Moeen with a break. It’s not impossible he could yet do so.”Ben’s game is in good shape and he is more than capable of batting at No. 3,” Root said. “We are in a fortunate position that many in the side could bat in that position. Ben’s technique is sound and he will be able to adapt to this role. He is one of the fittest guys in the side, so the intensity of batting in the top order and bowling as one of our three seamers will not faze him.”If we feel that he has done a tremendous workload with the ball, then we can adapt and alter the order if it’s necessary, but I don’t expect that to happen. Ben is relishing the added responsibility of doing the job.”Perhaps more significant is confirmation from the England camp that Jonny Bairstow was considered fit and available for selection but has not been recalled.

The emergence of Ben Foakes, who rendered himself undroppable after an outstanding debut in Galle, has squeezed Bairstow out of the side. Now without the allrounder status enjoyed by Moeen and Stokes with which to boost his selection chances, Bairstow has found himself competing for a spot as a specialist batsman. Unwilling – and perhaps unsuited – to batting at the top of the order (he has made no secret of his reluctance to bat in the top four in red-ball cricket), he was effectively up against Buttler for the final spot in the side. Buttler averages 35.97 in Test cricket; Bairstow 37.19.While the catalyst to Bairstow’s exclusion was the ankle injury sustained during the ODI series that provided Foakes with an opportunity, the roots of this issue go back a little further.Since he was moved to No. 5 in May – a move with which he was never entirely comfortable; he has scored all five of his Test centuries at Nos. 6 and 7 – Bairstow has averaged 23.16 in seven Tests. He has also been dismissed for a duck in each of his last three Tests. Over the last two-years, his Test average is 32.77.He was unsettled, too, by talk of losing the gloves. At first, Buttler appeared to be his main rival for the position, but the arrival of Foakes at international level has increased the competition. While he clearly has the ability to reclaim a place in the side, he may need to embrace batting out of position – possibly even at No. 3 – to do so.Jonny Bairstow faces a battle to regain his place in the Test team•Getty Images

“Jonny was available for selection,” Root said. “Trevor Bayliss and I have spoken to him about finding the right balance for this Test with the conditions we are expecting. He understands the situation and is aware that we have to pick the side that is best suited to conditions we can expect in Kandy. It is unfortunate that he missed out through injury in the first Test. He is a integral part of our plans and is a key member of our core squad and his experience around the group is important.”While England arrived in Kandy with some thoughts of playing a fourth seamer instead of a third spinner, an inspection of the pitch has provoked a rethink. With Sri Lanka somewhat disappointed in the amount of assistance the surface in Galle provided their spinners, the Pallekele pitch is already unusually dry and is expected to provide more help for slow bowlers.”Having had a good look at the surface today, we feel the side that won the first Test will give us the best opportunity for us to get something out of this Test,” Root said. “The surface is dry and it will spin. The balance of the team is ideal for these conditions. We can also adapt, if the situation dictates, as we showed in Galle.”England have struggled to maintain a settled batting line-up pretty much since Andrew Strauss’ retirement in 2012. While Moeen has batted everywhere between No. 1 and No. 9, Stokes will now have batted everywhere from No. 3 to No. 11. Root likes to talk of flexibility, but that hints at a certain level of chaos.

Rodgers could find his next Ndidi in Celtic swoop for "fantastic" teen target

Celtic have had a mixed start to the 2023/24 campaign after they decided to bring Brendan Rodgers back to Glasgow after Ange Postecoglou's departure over the summer.

The Hoops were hit with a blow as their former manager opted to part ways with the club in order to join Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur at the end of last season.

Postecoglou secured the domestic treble last season and that achievement is already out of the question for the Scottish giants this time around as the Bhoys lost 1-0 to Kilmarnock in the League Cup.

Celtic are also bottom of their Champions League group with zero wins and three defeats in their opening four matches – competing against Feyenoord, Atletico Madrid, and Lazio.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers.

They are, however, top of the Scottish Premiership and are yet to lose a game in the league, with a record of 11 wins and two draws in 13 outings.

Rodgers added nine new signings to his squad over the summer as Hyeok-kyu Kwon, Odin Thiago Holm, Marco Tilio, Hyun-jun Yang, Nat Phillips, Gustaf Lagerbielke, Maik Nawrocki, Paulo Bernardo, and Luis Palma were all brought in to bolster the side.

The upcoming January transfer window will provide the Northern Irish head coach with an opportunity to make more additions, and the Hoops have been touted with an interest in a Premiership midfielder.

Celtic transfer news – Lennon Miller

According to a recent report from TEAMtalk, the Scottish giants are one of a number of teams eyeing up a possible swoop to sign Motherwell starlet Lennon Miller.

The outlet named both Celtic and Rangers among the group of clubs keeping tabs on the teenage talent's development, as they track his progress ahead of a potential move for him further down the line.

However, they are not alone in their interest as the Scottish gem has a host of Premier League outfits looking at his performances this season.

It is stated that Tottenham Hotspur, Brentford, Aston Villa, West Ham United, and Brighton & Hove Albion have also been sending scouts to watch him on a regular basis this term.

There is no mention of how much it would cost to secure te 17-year-old prospect's services or whether or not Motherwell are even prepared to entertain any offers for him during the upcoming January transfer window.

If there is a deal to be had, though, it could be a difficult one for Celtic to complete if they face competition from multiple Premier League sides, who can offer football in a major European league, whilst the Hoops may not have any European football to offer if they finish bottom of their Champions League group and crash out of Europe entirely.

However, Rodgers could secure his next version of his former Leicester City defensive midfielder Wilfred Ndidi if he is able to win the race for the Motherwell star's signature.

Celtic were touted with an interest in the Nigeria international after the Foxes were relegated from the Premier League but a move did not materialise, after the Northern Irish tactician worked with him in England for a number of years.

Ndidi's form for Leicester under Rodgers

The towering ace made 138 appearances across five seasons for Rodgers during their time together at Leicester, as he excellently anchored the midfield throughout that spell.

Ndidi proved himself to be a superb defensive midfielder who is able to consistently cut out opposition attacks in order to stop his own goalkeeper from being troubled, whilst also being able to create more chances for his own side to make things happen at the right end of the pitch.

In their last full season together, which was during the 2021/22 campaign, the 26-year-old titan made 5.4 tackles and interceptions per game across 19 Premier League matches. He won 54% of his duels that term and was dribbled past 1.7 times per match by his opponents.

Leicester midfielder Wilfred Ndidi.

Ndidi followed that up with 3.7 tackles and interceptions per outing for Leicester last season, along with a duel success rate of 55% and only being dribbled past once per clash on average, across 27 league games.

The right-footed dynamo ranked within at least the top 6% of his positional peers at Premier League level last term for tackles, interceptions, and clearances respectively per 90, which illustrates how impressive his defending was a midfielder.

These statistics show that Rodgers had a terrific defensive presence in the middle of the park at the King Power and Miller could come in to provide a similar set of skills if Celtic are able to snap him up at the start of 2024, or during the summer transfer window at the end of the season.

Lennon Miller's season in numbers

The 17-year-old talent, who was once hailed as "fantastic" by manager Steven Hammell, has enjoyed an impressive start to the campaign with Motherwell.

In spite of his age and lack of experience, Miller has established himself as a dominant force in midfield for his club and is now a regular starter.

The teenage whiz has started nine of his side's Premiership outings so far this season after four appearances and one start in the Scottish top-flight last term.

His defensive qualities have been on full display as the Hoops target has made an eye-catching 3.6 tackles and interceptions along with 7.7 ball recoveries per game. He has also only been dribbled past once per match on average, which shows that the young gem is stopping opposition players far more often than they are getting the better of him.

Miller, at the age of just 17, has won an outstanding 71% of his duels – including 79% of his aerial battles – in the league this season, which shows that he is already physically prepared to compete at first-team level.

The Motherwell battler, who does not turn 18 until next season, has also produced one goal and one assist in five League Cup appearances this term.

Looking at his statistics during the 2023/24 campaign, the impressive teenager could be Rodgers' next Ndidi as he has the physicality and the defensive awareness to consistently cut out and stop opposition attacks to help his side at both ends of the pitch, just as the Nigerian gem did for him at Leicester.
