Rangers: Beale struck gold with signing of colossus who’s now worth £5m

Glasgow Rangers made the decision to part ways with manager Michael Beale earlier this month after the English tactician endured a difficult start to the season.

The Light Blues lost three of their opening seven Scottish Premiership matches and were knocked out of the Champions League by PSV during the play-off round, which meant that the club moved into the group stages of the Europa League.

This came after the former Chelsea youth coach was allowed to oversee an overhaul of the playing squad over the course of the summer transfer window.

As shown in the table above, the former Rangers chief was able to snap nine new recruits to bolster the team after the likes of Alfredo Morelos, Ryan Kent, Scott Arfield, Antonio Colak, Fashion Sakala, and Ianis Hagi moved on, either on loan or permanently.

The results on the pitch did not justify the mass changes and the board made the decision to ditch the English tactician, who has since been replaced by Belgian boss Philippe Clement.

However, not all of Beale's deals were to the detriment of the club as one player who has been a standout performer on the pitch since his arrival is goalkeeper Jack Butland.

How much did Rangers pay for Butland?

Rangers did not pay a penny for the former England international as they agreed a pre-contract deal for the shot-stopper back in June, ahead of his contract with Crystal Palace expiring at the end of the month.

Rangers goalkeeper Jack Butland.

At the time of the move, Beale claimed that the club had signed an "excellent" goalkeeper who is now in the prime years of his career at the age of 30.

His performances so far this season have backed up that claim but there may have been some doubts over how it would pan out at the time due to his difficulties in England in recent years.

How many Premier League appearances did Butland make?

He racked up 87 Premier League appearances throughout his time down south with various clubs but none of those came during a loan spell with Manchester United last season.

Butland spent the second half of the campaign on loan at Old Trafford but Erik ten Hag did not feature him in a single competitive match before his return to Palace, and eventual move to Ibrox.

That came after the 30-year-old ace only played ten top-flight games in two-and-a-half seasons with the Eagles as he failed to displace Spanish titan Vicente Guaita to earn a regular spot in the starting XI.

He did play nine times during the 2021/22 campaign. However, the Englishman was unable to catch the eye as 43% of the shots on his goal found the back of the net and his side only kept one clean sheet, as per Sofascore.

Former Crystal Palace goalkeeper Jack Butland.

His troubles at Palace, and United, came after an impressive start to his senior career with Birmingham and Stoke in his younger days. He racked up 214 competitive appearances for those two clubs combined and kept 60 clean sheets in total.

Butland became the youngest goalkeeper in England history when he made his debut against Italy in 2012 at the age of 19 and has earned nine caps for his country to date.

The 6 foot 5 colossus enjoyed a fantastic spell with Stoke after coming through the academy system at Birmingham as he won their Player of the Year award for the 2015/16 and 2018/19 campaigns.

He kept 18 clean sheets and saved 71% of the shots on his goal across 45 Championship starts during the latter season but failed to build on his form for the Potters as his career fell by the wayside at Palace after a move to Selhurst Park in 2020.

How has Butland performed for Rangers?

Rangers now appear to have benefitted from Butland's declining career as they swooped in to sign him for £0 and the towering gem has been a revelation this season.

The former England international has hit the ground running at Ibrox and already established himself as a star and key player for the club with his fantastic performances between the sticks.

He has averaged a Sofascore rating of 7.11 across nine Scottish Premiership starts and kept an eye-catching six clean sheets to date, with an impressive 77% save percentage.

Rangers goalkeeper Jack Butland

Whereas, Allan McGregor only saved 57% of the shots on his goal and kept eight shutouts in 24 top-flight appearances for the Light Blues last season.

This suggests that Rangers have secured a huge upgrade in goal by replacing the veteran Scotsman with Butland, who was hailed for his "outstanding" goalkeeping by journalist Josh Bunting in August, over the summer transfer window.

The former Stoke star has also enjoyed a strong start to life in Europe with an average Sofascore rating of 7.35 and a save percentage of 75% across two Europa League group stage outings.

How much is Butland worth now?

Football Insider recently reported that the Light Blues value the 30-year-old colossus at a fee of at least £5m amid interest from Championship side Birmingham.

The outlet claimed that his former club are keen on a deal for the Gers star, just months on from his move to the Scottish giants, but also add that the Ibrox side will not entertain any offers for his services during the upcoming January transfer window.

They have also stated that his internal valuation at Rangers will only increase further beyond £5m if his impressive performances on the pitch continue throughout the rest of the 2023/24 campaign.

The interest from Birmingham highlights how much of an impact Butland has made for the club this season as he has done enough to attract attention from elsewhere after three months of competitive football.

His valuation has quickly soared from £0 to £5m since Beale snapped him up for nothing from Palace and the former Gers boss, therefore, deserves credit.

The ex-QPR head coach hit the jackpot for the club with his move to sign the giant stopper, who now looks set to play a key role for Clement moving forward.

Klinger reaffirms Middlesex's Gloucestershire hoodoo

Middlesex beat Gloucestershire at Uxbridge for the first time in 12 attempts last year but normal service was resumed as they succumbed to Michael Klinger’s ebullience

ScorecardMichael Klinger’s assured half-century saw Gloucestershire resume their T20 hoodoo over Middlesex with a comfortable six-wicket win at Uxbridge.Gloucestershire’s first defeat to Middlesex at Uxbridge last season came at the 12th attempt but thanks to Klinger’s 58 that result proved the exception. The 38-year-old Australian was content to play second fiddle initially to Miles Hammond before taking responsibility for seeing his charges comfortably to their under-par target with a succession of elegant variations. For Middlesex, the only cause for cheer was a belligerent 33 in just 12 balls from James Fuller, back playing again after an 18-month injury hell.Middlesex were glad to have skipper Dawid Malan back from 12th-man duties with England, but the left-hander’s recent run of low scores continued as he chipped one back to David Payne in the first over to depart without scoring.Worse followed in the next over when Paul Stirling skied a top-edge from Matt Taylor which eventually came down into the gloves of wicketkeeper Gareth Roderick.Nick Gubbins responded with four quick-fire boundaries but when he edged Thisara Perera to Roderick, Middlesex were 35 for 3.Attempts at a rebuild by Stevie Eskinazi and John Simpson also came up short when the latter holed out at long-off for 13 off Benny Howell. It was all-rounder’s last contribution to the bowling effort as he pulled up injured one ball later and promptly left the field. He has damaged a groin and could miss several weeks – a blow for Gloucestershire as he is the kingpin of their attack. However, there was to be no respite for Middlesex as Ryan Higgins grabbed the chance to bowl against his former county and promptly had Eskinazi caught off the glove. At 63 for 5 off nine, Middlesex effected a rally of sorts courtesy of Dwayne Bravo and Hilton Cartwright, the pair adding 47 in seven overs before Cartwright failed to clear cow corner.Such was the Gloucestershire strangled-hold, typified by Middlesex old-boy Tom Smith’s four overs for just 15 runs, it was the 18th over before Bravo (34) flayed the first six of the innings. He would depart next ball, hit wicket, to cue Fuller’s extraordinary cameo.Gloucester began their pursuit of 161 at full throttle, Hammond, in only his second match in almost three years because of architectural studies, hammering eight fours in a breezy 36 before hitting a Bravo full toss straight to substitute fielder James Harris.Under no scoreboard pressure skipper Klinger and Ian Cockbain continued, albeit with few boundaries, to tick the score along until the latter lofted Stirling to Cartwright on the square leg boundary with the score on 93.Roderick weighed in with 24 to go with his three catches and although Klinger, too, left before the end, bowled by Bravo, Gloucester eased home with eight balls to spare.

North Carolina in line to host World T20 regional qualifier

ESPNcricinfo has learned that visiting teams for the World T20 regional qualifier have already been notified that Raleigh has been tentatively pencilled in as the host site

A new turf-wicket facility in North Carolina is set to be announced as host of the 2020 World T20 regional qualifying tournament scheduled for September 16 to 23, according to multiple ESPNcricinfo sources. The top two finishers out of the four-team event – featuring hosts USA, Canada, Belize and Panama – will advance to the Americas regional qualifying final in 2019 where Bermuda and Cayman Islands await. The September tournament would be held at Church Street Park, a $5.2 million dedicated cricket pitch opened in the Raleigh suburb of Morrisville in 2015. The ground’s address is 5800 Cricket Pitch Way, highlighting the support in the local Morrisville community whose 25,000 population includes a 30% South Asian demographic. In addition a natural-turf wicket, the ground has floodlights that are good enough for club cricket regulations but not believed to be adequate for international cricket.ESPNcricinfo has learned that visiting teams for the World T20 regional qualifier have already been notified that Raleigh has been tentatively pencilled in as the host site. However, an official announcement for the host city has yet to be made despite the tournament’s scheduled start less than two months away.Multiple sources have confirmed that local cricket officials in the area are hosting ICC officials this weekend for a final inspection of the pitch and facilities at Church Street Park to make sure it is suitable for international cricket before giving the all-clear to assign it as the tournament host site. Church Street Park has hosted national junior tournaments and regional tournaments for senior men’s cricket before. It was also used as one of eight sites for USA Cricket regional combines this spring, but it has never hosted an international tournament. If the North Carolina venue does gain the hosting assignment for the T20 Qualifier, it will also most likely host the 2018 Auty Cup between USA and Canada as well. However, if Church Street Park fails its ICC inspection this weekend, the most likely venue to host both the T20 Qualifier and the Auty Cup would be Woodley Park in the Los Angeles suburb of Van Nuys. Woodley Park hosted the Auty Cup and WCL Division Four within weeks of each other in October 2016.Sources have told ESPNcricinfo that USA Cricket and Cricket Canada officials have been engaged in discussions to hold the Auty Cup immediately after the conclusion of the T20 Qualifier to save on travel costs and streamline logistics. The Auty Cup would most likely remain a three-match 50-over series format, with USA using it as preparation for ICC WCL Division Three that is due to be held in October or November at a location yet to be announced.Church Street Park is used regularly on a weekly basis by the Triangle Cricket League, which was founded in 2009 to support the rapidly growing cricket community in the area of North Carolina, known as the Research Triangle. The ‘Triangle’ is a geographic reference to the major university cities of Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill, which are less than 25 miles apart and home to North Carolina State University, Duke University and the University of North Carolina respectively.Church Street Park is located four miles southwest of Raleigh-Durham International Airport. Due to its proximity to the Research Triangle, it also has strong local support infrastructure that makes it an appealing venue to host international tournaments. One of the most prominent supporters of the facility and cricket in the North Carolina community is Alvin Kallicharran. The 69-year-old former West Indies opening batsman has been a North Carolina resident since 1995 and continues to do youth coaching in the area. The fruits of that labor are starting to show as Smit Doshi emerged last year from North Carolina junior cricket to be picked at age 15 as the youngest player in the USA U-19 squad that went to Toronto for the U-19 World Cup Qualifier.Then-ICC head of global development Tim Anderson led an ICC delegation that also included the regional development manager Ben Kavanagh and ICC Americas high performance manager Tom Evans to visit the Church Street Park site when it first opened in 2015 and highlighted the venue’s potential as a future tournament host site.”There’s not a lot of good cricket grounds in America and you guys, you’ve got one,” Anderson was quoted by Raleigh’s newspaper as telling Morrisville officials during an open public meeting in November 2015. “This is beautiful. We were saying – we’re all from Australia – and this would be a good cricket ground in Australia.”

Rangers: "Standout" teen gem has more goals than Lammers this season

Glasgow Rangers finally gave a convincing performance at Ibrox in the Scottish Premiership as Philippe Clement’s reign started with a bang.

Hibernian were the visitors and having gone undefeated under new manager Nick Montgomery, the tie had the makings of a potential banana skin for the new manager, yet this was avoided as the Light Blues strolled to a comfortable 4-0 win and a new era in Glasgow has begun.

The Belgian will hope that this result gives the players a much-needed confidence boost and with a European tie against Sparta Prague to come on Thursday evening, a chance to build momentum will come around rather swiftly.

The 49-year-old tactician looked like the most qualified person for the role following Michael Beale’s sacking and with a debut win banked, his priority should now be to get a tune out of the current crop of players and enable them to showcase their true talents.

Cyriel Dessers enjoyed a decent game against Hibs, getting on the scoresheet while making three key passes, and he could soon be revitalised under Clement as the season goes on.

Danilo and Todd Cantwell also returned from their recent injury woes, and they will both be dying to showcase their vast talents under the new manager.

Rangers forward Sam Lammers.

One name who will also be keen on stepping up to the plate is that of Sam Lammers, who has failed to really woo the Gers support, despite having wonderful technical ability.

Has Sam Lammers been a good signing for Rangers?

With Alfredo Morelos, Ryan Kent, and Scott Arfield all leaving the club once their contracts expired at the end of last season, Beale knew he had to add some much-needed quality and depth to his attacking options.

Lammers was identified as a target, yet with his goalscoring record rather poor, it was clear Beale was looking at utilising the Dutchman just behind the strikers rather than as a centre-forward.

Since the start of the 2020/21 campaign, the 26-year-old dud had scored just six goals across 76 matches, and it was hardly a goal return that was going to satisfy the masses at Ibrox.

Beale clearly was not deterred by this and secured his signature from Atalanta for a fee in the region of £3m and on the surface, this was a lot for someone with such a poor record in the final third.

This has not improved since joining the Light Blues either, as he has scored just once in 17 matches so far during the 2023/24 season.

Even when you take his lack of goals out of the equation, the former Eintracht Frankfurt forward – who was part of the side that defeated Rangers in the 2022 Europa League final – has failed to stand out.

Indeed, he has failed to create a big chance in the Premiership so far, while ranking third across the squad for big chances missed (three) and ranks in a lowly 15th spot for key passes per game (0.6), suggesting that he is not contributing across other metrics either.

Unless Clement can give him a major confidence boost in the coming weeks, Lammers may go down as yet another summer signing who has failed to live up to expectations and these are ultimately what Beale was judged on along with the poor results.

With so many attacking players departing Glasgow over the summer, Beale looks to have made a mistake when buying Lammers, especially as one teenager who left the club currently has more goals than him this season – Robbie Ure.

What happened to Robbie Ure?

The 19-year-old striker emerged through the academy at the club and began to make waves for the B team during the 2021/22 campaign, scoring twice in the UEFA Youth League and he built on this platform last season, becoming a key goal-scoring threat for the B side.

He continued his wonderful form in the Youth League which included another three goals scored and he impressed in the tie against Napoli youth, with Rangers Review journalist Joshua Barrie stating Ure was a “standout” for the team.

By this point, he had already featured for the senior side, making his debut against Queen of the South in a League Cup in August under Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

He certainly took the opportunity with both hands as he scored less than ten minutes into his first ever appearance for the Light Blues, and it looked as though he was a player who could develop into an excellent centre-forward.

He even drew praise from Arfield, who lauded the youngster as “magic” during a post-match interview, and it would have given him a wonderful confidence boost.

Ure even managed to play twice in the Premiership that season and hopes were high that he could kick on over the summer.

With his contract expiring, the Gers offered him a new deal but the 19-year-old wanted to depart the Ibrox side and go after new challenges, and following a trial at AZ Alkmaar he eventually ended up signing for Belgian side Anderlecht in what looks like a decent move for the talented striker.

He has joined the setup at RCSA Futures, which is their B team, and they play in the Belgian second tier, yet it gives Ure the chance to experience first-team football on a regular basis rather than warm the bench at Rangers.

He has started off rather well too, finding the back of the net twice across just three matches and if he keeps this sort of form up, he may just be given an opportunity in the senior side before the end of the season.

Although not the immediate answer to Beale’s problems, Ure has scored more goals than Lammers this season, in far fewer appearances too, and perhaps integrating him more into the first team would have been a wise move.

It looks as though the Ibrox side have fumbled badly on this one, especially if he goes on to make a name for himself on the continent.

Lammers will surely embrace the chance of a fresh start under Clement, yet Ure is currently outscoring the Dutchman across the current campaign and the ceiling is high for the young sensation, which means that there is work to be done before the former Gers youngster can be forgotten.

Sibley 106 v Leicestershire 100 is sorry tale for Foxes

Dominic Sibley made more than the entire Leicestershire team as Warwickshire’s steady tread towards the Division Two title remained unabated

ScorecardDominic Sibley’s century, his second of the season, helped Warwickshire establish a dominant position after bowling injury-hit Leicestershire out for just 100 on the first day of their Specsavers Division Two county championship match at the Fischer County Ground.Sibley, who took just 49 balls to reach his half-century, during which he hit Leicestershire triallist Usman Arshad for four consecutive boundaries, was made to work rather harder thereafter, needing a further 107 deliveries to reach three figures. By the time of his dismissal shortly before the close, however, the league leaders already led by 90 with seven first innings wickets in hand. With five first-team seam bowlers out injured, Leicestershire gave a first-class debut to academy graduate David Sayer, and a trial opportunity to former Yorkshire and Durham seamer Arshad, with 20-year-old Ben Mike making only his second first-team appearance.A green tinged pitch and cloudy skies saw Warwickshire captain Jeetan Patel exercise the away team’s right to bowl first, and Keith Barker quickly picked up the wicket of Foxes’ opener Harry Dearden, the young left-hander thin-edging an out-swinger to wicketkeeper Tim Ambrose.Colin Ackermann may have been slightly unfortunate to be given out leg before to Barker, the ball hitting him well above the knee roll, but there was no doubt at all about Paul Horton’s dismissal soon afterwards, Chris Woakes removing the opener’s middle stump with a ball that seamed back in and took the inside edge.In the circumstances Leicestershire could have done without any self-inflicted wounds of the sort inflicted by Neil Dexter, who in looking to get off the mark gave his partner Mark Cosgrove no chance of getting home. The Australian had given up as Woakes, in his follow-through, picked up and hit the stumps with his throw..Ateeq Javid, formerly of Warwickshire, left a delivery from Barker that trimmed his off bail, Dexter pushed indecisively at a swinging delivery from Woakes to edge a catch behind, and Olly Stone was too quick for Ned Eckersley.Arshad gave Woakes a simple catch at extra cover off Stone, with the only bright spot for Leicestershire the batting of young all-rounder Mike, until his attempt to pull a short delivery from Stone was top-edged into the hands of Chris Wright at long leg.Wright himself picked up the final Leicestershire wicket, bowling debutant David Sayer.Leicestershire’s problems continued when they came out to bowl, with Sibley and fellow opener Will Rhodes taking full advantage of some loose bowling from the inexperienced members of the Foxes’ seam attack to compile a partnership of 123 before Rhodes was given out leg before to a full, swinging delivery in the first over after tea.Ian Bell came and went quickly, leg before to Mohammad Abbas, but Jonathan Trott joined Sibley to build another partnership before Sibley went leg before to the persevering Mike just before the close.
