RCB look to spoil Dinesh Karthik's captaincy debut

Both teams begin the new season with rejuvenation on their minds, and both have been hurt by injuries to key fast bowlers

KKR have enough opening options – Agarkar

Big pictureWhen Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore walk out on Sunday, both sides will be conspicuously lacking a familiar left-handed opener. Royal Challengers let go of Chris Gayle, perhaps their biggest match-winner ever, ahead of the January auction, and Knight Riders did the same with Gautam Gambhir, their captain for seven seasons in which they won two titles. If these events show us anything, it’s how unpredictable this league, and by extension the format, can be. Just in 2016, Virat Kohli, the Royal Challengers captain, called out Sarfaraz Khan for his fielding and fitness. And yet, he was one of three players retained, alongside AB de Villiers and Kohli himself. This is a slightly different RCB line-up. After falling flat in 2017, when they finished last, they seem to have made amends with smart buys aimed at remedying their over-reliance on the top order. They will also be served well by domestic talents who have successfully transitioned to international cricket, such as Yuzvendra Chahal.Knight Riders have endured three seasons without a trophy, and have sought to address that by appointing a new captain in Dinesh Karthik, who is in the middle of a late career renaissance of sorts. Karthik, who has a wealth of leadership experience in domestic cricket, recently earned a recall to the Indian side and responded by playing probably the defining innings of his career: all signs of a man high on confidence and at peace with his game. Not a bad way to start. In the newsMitchell Starc has been ruled out of the tournament with a tibial bone stress fracture in his right leg, and the Knight Riders coach Jacques Kallis has pinned his faith on Tom Curran, the bowling allrounder from England, to fill in ably. There were also doubts surrounding Chris Lynn and Andre Russell, who pulled out of the PSL due to injuries, and Sunil Narine, who was reported for a suspect action in the same tournament. But the Knight Riders management has assured fans that all three will be available for the opener.Nathan Coulter-Nile, who was Knight Riders’ second-highest wicket-taker last season, will miss the opportunity of taking on his former franchise. As he has continues to recover from a back stress fracture, Coulter-Nile has been withdrawn from the Royal Challengers squad and replaced by Corey Anderson.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

The likely XIsKolkata Knight Riders: 1 Chris Lynn, 2 Shubman Gill, 3 Robin Uthappa, 4 Dinesh Karthik (capt, wk), 5 Nitish Rana, 6 Andre Russell, 7 Piyush Chawla, 8 Sunil Narine, 9 Tom Curran, 10 Kuldeep Yadav, 11 Shivam Mavi/Kamlesh NagarkotiRoyal Challengers Bangalore: 1 Brendon McCullum/Quinton de Kock, 2 Parthiv Patel (wk), 3 Virat Kohli (capt), 4 AB de Villiers, 5 Sarfaraz Khan, 6 Colin de Grandhomme, 7 Washington Sundar, 8 Tim Southee, 9 Umesh Yadav, 10 Yuzvendra Chahal, 11 Navdeep SainiStrategy puntDinesh Karthik would do well to unleash Piyush Chawla at the Royal Challengers line-up. De Villiers has an appalling record against the legspinner in IPL: 43 runs in eight innings at a strike rate of 97.7, while being dismissed four times. McCullum fares even worse, averaging 8.00 and striking at 80 while also being dismissed four times in eight innings. That’s two of the opposition’s most dangerous batsmen.Stats that matter Sixteen out of 26 matches at the Eden Gardens in T20Is and IPL since 2015 have been won by the chasing team: a strong case for bowling first. Sunil Narine has increasingly proven his utility as a batsman in recent years. His effectiveness shoots up significantly when he’s facing spin. Since IPL 2015, Narine has averaged 17.2 against pace and struck at 145.8. Against spin, the corresponding numbers are 29.5 and 226.9. Both teams are relatively evenly matched at the Eden Gardens. In their five most recent meetings at this venue, Knight Riders hold a marginal 3-2 edge. However, Knight Riders have won all their three matches batting first, while RCB have chased down totals for both their victories. While Dinesh Karthik is solid in the middle overs and a blazing finisher, he has trouble getting going in the Powerplay. Since the 2015 IPL, Karthik has batted 16 times in the first six overs and faced 63 deliveries for a strike rate of 92.1. If Knight Riders win on Sunday, they will tie Chennai Super Kings for 41 home victories – the second-highest among all IPL teams.1:19

RCB: The perennial bridesmaids

Fantasy picks First, the obvious choices: Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers. You’d have to be brave and perhaps foolish to leave either out. Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal are coming off a bumper limited-overs tour of South Africa. They took 33 wickets between them in six matches and averaged 13.88 and 16.37 respectively. Royal Challengers struggled at the death in the last IPL, losing an average of three wickets per innings in the last five overs, and scoring at just 8.64 per over. Kuldeep was the most successful spinner at the death last year, taking seven wickets and conceding a boundary once every 6.67 deliveries.Quotes”Unfortunately Starc got injured but we have got a replacement in [Tom] Curran. We look forward to some exciting stuff from Tom who should stand up and play a big role in the absence of Mitchell.”

Andy Flower: IPL opportunity hinders players' first-class development

Flower, who will take over Andrew Strauss’ duties for much of the season, also said there should be a review of the England Lions programme after poor results

Andy Flower has warned that allowing England players to participate in the IPL can result in them missing out on “growth opportunities” in first-class cricket.Flower, who is standing in for Andrew Strauss as England team director, accepted that those same players benefited from opportunities in other areas, but also suggested that domestic cricket must better recreate the conditions prevalent in international cricket if the England team’s results are to improve. And Flower, who will also sit in on selection meetings and take over Strauss’ role on the domestic structure review working party, also conceded that there should be a “review” of the Lions program as, despite significant investment, they “haven’t done that well.”During Flower’s period as England coach, there was regular tension between those players wanting to participate in the IPL – notably Kevin Pietersen – and Flower’s contention that they might compromise their Test form if they spent the early weeks of the county season playing T20 cricket in India. Under Strauss’ period in charge, the thinking has changed somewhat, with the England management both reluctant to stand in the way of the earning opportunities their players have in the IPL and respectful of the cricketing benefits of the experience.Flower can see the debate from both sides. But while accepting the benefits of IPL experience, he also acknowledges the potential drawbacks.”The ECB position, at the moment, is to allow some of our best players to go to the IPL,” Flower said. “And a lot of people will say things have thankfully moved on from the time I made my decisions around subjects like the IPL.”[By playing in the IPL] They do miss out on some really excellent growth opportunities in first-class cricket for their counties. There is no doubt about that.”But the understanding at the moment is that they are growing in other ways, playing under a lot of pressure, in front of big crowds and among some of the best players in the world at the IPL.”Echoing concerns raised by Strauss in recent days, Flower suggested that it was important that conditions in County Championship cricket reflected those seen in the international game. At present, with a disproportionate number of fixtures in the opening and closing weeks of the season, the Championship is often played in conditions favouring nibbling medium-pacers with few opportunities for spinners and lessened need for pace. And while Flower accepted there would be a window for The 100 in the new domestic schedule, he feels the domestic program had to improve if England were to produce players better prepared for international cricket.”We want to, ideally, recreate international conditions in our domestic cricket,” he said. “If you have proper international conditions, there’s an imperative for fast bowling rather than the little seamers that dominate the [county] game and good quality spin bowling. You get the consequent benefit of batsmen facing that bowling.”There is a review of the structure and that might change. That window – for T20 cricket – is five weeks from the last week of July. There’s a lot of great cricketing time either side of it. And it’s about what they play up to that last week in July. Those decisions are yet to be made.”And, when reviewing the domestic structure, the Lions has to be very much a big part of that decision. Yes, the ECB spend a reasonable amount of money in Lions and Young Lions [Under-19] programmes. What we try to do there is provide some added value experiences that the counties can’t provide in their first-class structure. We try and put the players in alien conditions, against really good opposition most of the time and almost mirroring some long, tough overseas tours.”But I think it would be fair to say we haven’t done that well enough because we aren’t getting those away results. We have to review how we’re doing things and be creative and curious about the way we lead those programmes. And about how we coach and how we help these guys quicker and deeper: about themselves and about the game.”With Flower covering for Strauss, Mark Ramprakash will assume the role of England Lions coach. He will, therefore, coach the Lions side in their tri-series games against West Indies and India and their four-day match at New Road against India.”Ramps is a really good man and a really good coach,” Flower said. “He’s also a young coach learning his trade. This is part of that growth for him. It’s a really good opportunity for him to lead a management and coaching team. He led the South side in the North-South series and did it really well. I was his assistant coach and he was outstanding. He works outstandingly well with Graham Thorpe, with whom he now shares the ECB lead batting coach role.”While Flower made it clear he would not be calling Strauss every day – “We want to give him some space to be with his family,” he said – he did confirm the pair would consult over “substantive issues” as they arose. In the immediate future, Flower will be coaching – “I won’t be coaching,” he says, “I’ll be getting the guys together and making sure they have a great time” – the World XI in the Hurricane Relief match at Lord’s on May 31.”It will be a great game for a really good cause,” he said. “There are no fees for the players and the MCC have donated Lord’s. We have some exciting players – such as 17-year-old legspinner Sandeep Lamichhane – and Rashid Khan, who is one of the best limited-overs leg-spinners in the world. We have Indian and Pakistani players playing together in a World XI, which is exactly what these sorts of events are trying to achieve, and the event is going to do a lot of good for areas extensively damaged by the hurricane.Tickets for the Hurriance Relief match – £20 for adults and £10 for children – can be purchased from the Lord’s website: https://tickets.lords.org/

"Very high priority" – Liverpool have talented defender "top of shortlist"

Liverpool could look to make defensive signings in the January transfer window and one "incredible" ace has been backed to move to Anfield.

Liverpool need to sign defenders…

The Reds' season has just lost its momentum in recent weeks, with the 2-1 defeat away to Tottenham setting them back significantly, and Sunday's 2-2 draw at Brighton also proving to be a frustrating afternoon.

Jurgen Klopp's side are only three points adrift of Spurs and Arsenal in the Premier League title race, and the fact that Manchester City are only one ahead of Liverpool is a bonus, but improvements are needed if they are to go all the way this season.

The summer transfer window was all about the midfield rebuild at Anfield, with four new players signed in that area of the pitch, and five going the other way, including Fabinho and Jordan Henderson.

Now, it may be time to start focusing on the defence, considering both Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip are in their 30s, while Andy Robertson hits that milestone next year. Signing a centre-back who is also capable of playing at left-back could be seen as ideal, and a new update could give Liverpool fans some confidence about it happening.

Piero Hincapie transfer update

Speaking to Give Me Sport, The Redmen TV presenter Paul Machin backed the Reds to complete the signing of highly-rated Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie in January or next summer:

"I think Liverpool would have moved for one in the summer if there'd been a little bit more time and they'd been able to get the midfield targets sorted sooner. I think it's a very, very high priority.

"The other one probably on top of that shortlist is Hincapie from Leverkusen. He will be right at the top of that shortlist. He’s young, talented and can fulfil two roles. That's the profile of defender Liverpool will need moving into January and next summer."

Hincapie has been linked with Liverpool a number of times in the past, and although a summer move failed to materialise, it does feel as though they see him as an ideal signing in the near future. In truth, it is hard to find many negatives against the Reds bringing him in, with the 21-year-old already a key figure for Leverkusen – Hincapie's potential been described as "incredible" by football talent scout Jacek Kulig in the past.

Piero Hincapie's strengths

Last season, the Ecuadorian averaged 2.5 clearances and two aerial duel wins per game in the Bundesliga (Whoscored – Hincapie statistics), and his ability to shine at both centre-back and left-back could appeal so much to Klopp, as well as his long-term ceiling.

There is an argument to say that both Van Dijk and Robertson are not quite the players they used to be – the latter was at fault for Lewis Dunk's late equalier in the 2-2 draw with Brighton – and Hincapie could be seen as someone who can challenge both for minutes straight away.

PCB serves Umar Akmal notice over spot-fixing claims

The batsman had said in a TV interview on Sunday that he had been approached to leave to balls alone during the 2015 World Cup match against India

Umar Farooq24-Jun-2018

AFP

The PCB wants Umar Akmal to explain the comments he made to a TV channel on Sunday about being offered money during the 2015 World Cup to “leave two balls alone”. Hours after Akmal told about the alleged approach made to him during the World Cup, as well as other supposed offers to miss games against India, the PCB served him a notice, asking him to meet the board’s anti-corruption unit on June 27 in Lahore to explain his comments.”I had got an offer during the World Cup to leave two balls alone and they were willing to pay me $200,000 for that,” Akmal said in the TV interview. “It was our first match against India in the 2015 World Cup… in fact, every match I play against India, they offer me money to make some excuse and opt out of the game. But I have told those people that I am very sincere about playing for Pakistan and to not talk to me on this topic ever again.”It is unclear whether Akmal had previously reported these alleged approaches to the anti-corruption authorities, and therein could lie a problem for him. While there is no evidence to suggest Akmal has been involved in any corrupt activity, failure to report an approach is also a punishable offence under PCB and ICC rules. Akmal, ESPNcricinfo understands, had officially reported corrupt approaches in 2014 during the England series in the UAE.The ICC, in an official statement, said it had launched an investigation and that it wished to speak to Akmal “urgently”.”The ICC is aware of a recent interview given by Umar Akmal. Whilst we note that there is no suggestion that any ‘fix’ actually took place, the ICC is reliant on players to report any corrupt approaches in a timely manner. This is critical to our efforts to gather information on potential ‘fixers’ and to disrupt and prevent their efforts to corrupt the game. As such we are taking Akmal’s comments very seriously.”We have launched an investigation and wish to speak to Mr Akmal as a matter of urgency. Our Anti-Corruption Unit is committed to working to uphold integrity in cricket and would urge anyone with any information to contact us via [email protected].”Akmal has been embroiled in a number of controversies of late. In May last year, in the lead-up to the Champions Trophy, Akmal had to return home after failing two fitness tests in two days. In September, he picked up a three-match ban and a fine of Pakistani rupees 1 million for his public outburst against coach Mickey Arthur. Then, in March this year, his future with Pakistan Super League franchise Lahore Qalandars came into question after he was left out of the squad following a poor run of form; it was understood that he was not even travelling to the stadium with his team-mates at that point.June 25, GMT 0244 The story was updated to include the ICC’s comment.

Rangers: New manager name makes "late play" for job, he wants to open talks

It has now been reported that a new manager name has made a "late play" to get the Rangers job over the likes of Philippe Clement and Kevin Muscat.

When will Rangers appoint a new manager?

It's been well over a week since Ibrox chiefs opted to replace Michael Beale, with the Englishman overseeing a torrid start to this Scottish Premiership season. The Gers are seven points behind Old Firm and title rivals Celtic in the table, losing three games already and being booed off on multiple occasions. It quite simply hasn't been good enough from a Rangers perspective, coming after Giovanni van Bronckhorst's tenure didn't exactly pull up trees either.

Glasgow Rangers' former manager Michael Beale.

Releasing a statement last week, the Rangers official website said:

"Results this season have fallen short of what everyone connected to Rangers would expect.

Therefore, the decision was reached today to terminate the contract of the manager, as well as the contracts of coaches Neil Banfield, Damian Matthew, Harry Watling and Jack Ade."

Sky Sports recently shared that the Teddy Bears, in their effort to find Beale's successor, have been conducting the final rounds of interviews in London this week. Both Clement and Muscat are now the two leading contenders for the Rangers job, having beaten a plethora of names to the front of the queue. Former Chelsea boss Frank Lampard, ex-Eintracht Frankfurt coach Oliver Glasner, AZ Alkmaar's Pascal Jansen, Ryan Lowe, Billy Davies and Graham Potter, John Eustace and Scott Parker have all been mentioned as candidates since Beale's sacking, but all of the aformentioned are no longer in the running.

It is believed that the Rangers manager chase is well and truly hotting up, with some reports suggesting that a Gers managerial decision is now "imminent" (TEAMtalk). Indeed, a Clement manager update this week claimed he is now frontrunners for the Rangers hot seat, but there is apparently now a very late alternative contender.

Rangers manager news – Nena Bjelica

Some Rangers manager news on Nena Bjelica, who very recently departed Turkish Super Lig side Trabzonspor, indicates he has "made a late play" to replace Beale and wishes to hold talks with the Glasgow side's board. The Croatian, who's managed a host of sides including Dinamo Zagreb and Lech Poznan, is apparently eager to find a new job quickly.

Bjelica is said to have identified the vacant Rangers manager role as "perfect" for his next job, and some sources believe he's put himself forward and is eager to open talks. However, while there is no information on where Rangers stand in all of this, they're at the final stages in their search for a new head coach – with Muscat and Philippe remaining the favourites. This information comes courtesy of TEAMtalk, who also say Clement has one hand on the Gers post.

The 52-year-old has won multiple league titles in Croatia with Dinamo, and an Austrian second division title with WAC – St. Andrä.
