Ex-Liverpool Man Slams ‘Troublemaker’ After £40m Exit

Fabinho will undoubtedly go down as a Liverpool legend after winning everything there is to win at the club in the last five years. He leaves in somewhat of an abrupt manner, though, with a move to Al-Ittihad set to be completed, according to Fabrizio Romano.

After struggling for form last season, a move away has arguably come at the perfect time for all involved, with Liverpool cashing in, and potentially using the money to welcome reinforcements.

According to Romano, the Reds are looking to sign Southampton teenager Romeo Lavia this summer, in order to boost their midfield, with a £45m bid set to be submitted – while Khephren Thuram's name has also been touted in the media.

Fabinho's pending £40m departure, however, hasn't left everyone recalling what an excellent presence he's been around the club in recent years, with former Liverpool player Jermaine Pennant taking aim at the Brazilian in an unexpected fashion.

What did Jermaine Pennant say?

Speaking to Lord Ping, Pennant said: "Fabinho’s performances over the last two years suggest that either his legs have gone or he doesn’t really want to be there anymore. Rumour has it that he’s a troublemaker in the changing room, that’s what I’ve heard from people close to the club.

"I’ve heard he’s a bad egg. I don’t know the ins and outs, but I hear he’s a nuisance to management in terms of professionalism. In his performances and in training, he’s not giving his all. You can see it."And his performances suggest he’s on the cliff of his peak.

"Some players can go on for a long time, but his body and his style makes it look like he’s not athletic. He’s 29, he’s one of the older 29-year-olds. He’s not mobile or agile, so it looks like he’s coming to the end of his prime. So £40m for him would be perfect.

"There’s still hope it might go through and Liverpool can invest that in a younger, fitter and stronger player."

What's the latest Liverpool transfer news?

Pennant also revealed that he believes Liverpool should sign Thuram to bolster their midfield after the departure of Jordan Henderson and the pending exit of Fabinho.

Speaking again via Lord Ping, he said: "I’d like to see Liverpool sign Khephren Thuram, he plays for Nice and he’s a box-to-box midfielder. I think he would be perfect, he’s skilful and he can tackle too. He’s like a young Gerrard, basically.

"He’s a Jude Bellingham-type player and he’d be your Fabinho replacement and he could play with Alexis Mac Allister. He could cover the whole of midfield like a better Henderson."

alexis-mac-allister-liverpool

So far this summer, Jurgen Klopp has welcomed both Alexis Mac Allister and Dominic Szoboszlai, significantly improving his midfield. With Henderson leaving, and Fabinho set to follow, beyond Thuram, the Reds could also reportedly bring in Lavia.

It certainly seems as though they could do with at least one more midfielder this summer, if they don't want to be left short of options in the coming campaign.

Meanwhile, a sensational report in The Mirror has suggested that the Premier League giants are ready to offer Kylian Mbappe a one-year loan deal from Paris Saint-Germain before he joins Real Madrid next summer.

It remains to be seen whether Liverpool can pull off what would be an incredible deal.

Sri Lanka pin hopes on quicks to avoid whitewash

Both teams have lost an influential spinner – Ravindra Jadeja and Rangana Herath, but India still appear to have all bases covered on a green Pallekele surface

The Preview by Andrew Fidel Fernando in Pallekele11-Aug-20172:45

Agarkar: Play Kuldeep, he’ll be useful in away Tests

Match FactsAugust 12-16, 2017
Start time 1000 local (0430GMT)Big PictureIndia have arrived at Pallekele, and oh my, a 22-yard carpet almost as lush and green as the surrounding hills has been rolled out before them. The track is likely to be shaved before the first ball is bowled on Saturday, but nevertheless, this one may be a unicorn of an Asian surface, where teams consider strapping three quicks to the plough. The visitors have thrashed Sri Lanka on a batting pitch. They have spanked Sri Lanka on a bone-dry turner. Now they have the chance to collect the set. With their most-experienced quicks and best spinner now unavailable for this match, Sri Lanka are now relying largely on surprise. The attack for this Test could be the greenest one in recent times – three frontline bowlers likely to have played fewer than 15 Tests put together. Sri Lanka are hoping that a batting order that has spent weeks preparing for Rangana Herath and Nuwan Pradeep will be caught off guard by Lahiru Kumara and Vishwa Fernando. The young quicks, at least, could not hope for friendlier conditions at home. But the thing about this India side is that they have all bases covered. If they feel this is a surface that will be conducive to seam bowling, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who is capable of running through sides in such conditions, becomes a strong contender to play. Umesh Yadav and Mohammed Shami have also been intermittently menacing even on flat and dry tracks. Spying a pitch that suits them now, they will have their sights set on the kinds of heavy hauls that are rarely accessible to them on the continent.Though there may be temptation to become complacent with the series so handsomely won, there are some statistical records that could spur India to maintain their intensity. They have never whitewashed Sri Lanka at home in a three-Test series. A victory here will also give them five straight wins on the island – all those achieved under Virat Kohli’s captaincy.Form guideSri Lanka LLWLW (completed matches, most recent first)
India WWWDWIn the spotlightHis hundred in the last Test may have been on a dustbowl, but Dimuth Karunaratne has prospered on seaming decks as well. His second-highest Test score of 152 came on a virtual plantation of a surface in Christchurch, against the likes of Tim Southee and Trent Boult. Though he has a modest first-dig record, Pallekele is one of the two venues in which he has scored a first-innings hundred – in 2015, against Pakistan. The most successful Sri Lanka batsman in the year so far, Karunaratne needs to carry his form right until the last innings of the series. No Indian has scored three Test centuries in an away series of three Tests or fewer. Only one has managed that in India. Going by how the series has gone, it might need something special to prevent Cheteshwar Pujara from becoming the first. In Galle, scoring a flawless hundred in perfect batting conditions, Pujara made no bones about his greed for hundreds. He enjoys the difficult ones more, but he will never look away from easier ones. This, against a deflated home side, is a great chance for him to add to his 13 Test tons.Team newsDhananjaya de Silva may retain his place despite two modest outings at the SSC. The attack, however is difficult to pick. Dilruwan Perera will probably play, thanks in no small part to his recent batting form. Lahiru Kumara and Vishwa Fernando seem the likeliest quicks. Then the quandary becomes whether to field three seamers and play Dushmantha Chameera, or whether to select Lakshan Sandakan, who bowled well in his only Test at this venue.Sri Lanka (possible): 1 Upul Tharanga, 2 Dimuth Karunaratne, 3 Kusal Mendis, 4 Dinesh Chandimal (capt.), 5 Angelo Mathews, 6 Niroshan Dickwella (wk), 7 Dhananjaya de Silva, 8 Dilruwan Perera, 9 Dushmantha Chameera/ Lakshan Sandakan, 10 Vishwa Fernando, 11 Lahiru Kumara,Virat Kohli will lead a changed XI yet again with Ravindra Jadeja suspended for this Test. Kuldeep Yadav should be a direct replacement for him, but India could look to rest one of the quicks. If the pitch is seam-friendly, three specialist quicks could play, leaving out either the allrounder Hardik Pandya or the second spinner.India (possible): 1 Shikhar Dhawan, 2 KL Rahul, 3 Cheteshwar Pujara, 4 Virat Kohli (capt.), 5 Ajinkya Rahane, 6 R Ashwin, 7 Wriddhiman Saha (wk), 8 Hardik Pandya, 9 Bhuvneshwar Kumar/Umesh Yadav, 10 Kuldeep Yadav, 11 Mohammed ShamiPitch and conditionsPallekele naturally affords quick bowlers a degree of pace and bounce, and the colour of the pitch on the eve of the match suggested there would be seam movement for the first two days as well. This ground is one of the wettest venues on the planet, however, so expect rain to hold up play at some point.Stats and trivia India have eight Test wins in Sri Lanka, which means they are tied with Pakistan for most victories on the island. If they win in Pallekele, five of their nine wins in the country would have come since 2015, and would also have come consecutively. Pujara is the leading run-scorer for 2017, with 843 runs at an average of 76.63. Karunaratne is fourth on that list, with 614 runs at 43.85. The two highest individual scores at Pallekele (Kusal Mendis’ 176 and Younis Khan’s 171*) have come in the second innings. There has not been a drawn Test in Sri Lanka for three years. Each of the 18 most-recent matches have yielded results.

Bravo-McCullum carnage overshadows Gayle's 93

The win increased the gap at the top between the two sides as Knight riders moved three points ahead of second-placed Patriots

Darren Bravo and Brendon McCullum blitzed eight sixes off the final 13 balls of a rain-reduced chase to leave hosts St Kitts & Nevis Patriots shell-shocked as Trinbago Knight Riders escaped with a dramatic eight-wicket win (Duckworth-Lewis-Stern). The win increased the Knight Riders’ first-place advantage over Patriots to three points and a win in either of their final two matches will clinch them top spot in the league stage.Knight Riders held slim hopes after Colin Munro fell in the fourth over of the chase to Samuel Badree, after which rain halted their 13-over chase – a consequence of two lengthy delays during the Patriots innings – and reduced it to a six-over sprint in which they needed 52 off the remaining 17 balls. Yet, Knight Riders reached the target with four balls remaining.Lewis leads offEvin Lewis hits a ball to the boundary every 4.06 deliveries so far in CPL 2017, a rate behind only McCullum (3.80) and Mohammad Nabi (2.92) for players facing a minimum of 30 deliveries. Lewis was twice as good on Wednesday night, hitting every other ball he faced for four or six in a rollicking 14-ball 39.He distributed his punishment evenly against Knight Riders, driving Ronsford Beaton for a straight six in the second over before doing the same to Sunil Narine in the third. In the next two overs, he pulled each bowler over square leg for another set of maximums. Lewis was on track to bring up the fastest fifty of CPL 2017 – currently held by Darren Sammy off 23 balls – before he was given out to Narine caught behind. Replays showed the ball missed the bat entirely on a back-foot swipe, with the sound of the ball clipping the pad flap. That duped the umpire into upholding Narine’s appeal for a catch as Lewis walked off bemused.Action. Camera. Lights?Just 5.5 overs into the match, with the score at 60 for 1 and Gayle on 19, a floodlight power-failure halted play and eventually resulted in a 90-minute delay, which shaved off two overs from each innings. Just 2.1 overs after the break – as Patriots advanced to 86 for 1 – a further 45-minute rain stoppage caused another five overs to be peeled off. With only five overs left in the innings, Patriots went on to nearly double their score. Their 162 in 13 overs ended up as the sixth-highest first-innings total of the tournament, and the highest scoring-rate of any innings in CPL 2017 (12.46 per over).Vintage GayleChris Gayle was near his menacing best at Warner Park. On three separate occasions – Ashley Nurse in the seventh, Dwayne Bravo in the 10th and Ronsford Beaton in the 13th – he smashed sixes off consecutive balls. He reached his fifty in 34 balls; in the next 12 deliveries, he raced to 93.Gayle needed two boundaries off the innings’ last three balls to reach a ton and Beaton, the bowler, served up another pie, but the batsman mistimed it to deep midwicket. Gayle’s 93 was the second-highest individual score of CPL 2017 and also moved him to the top of the season’s run charts.Knight Riders ambushLewis and Gayle’s knocks, however, were mere afterthoughts in the face of the assault from Darren Bravo and McCullum. Set an adjusted DLS 13-over target of 169, Knight Riders scored only two runs off the bat in a five-run opening over from Ben Hilfenhaus.McCullum got hot in the second over against Carlos Brathwaite, taking him for a six and two fours, then followed up with a trio of boundaries off Hilfenhaus in the third. But Narine and Munro fell in the space of four balls to the Australian and Badree, before rain stopped the chase with the score 34 for 2 in 3.1 overs. When the rain finally ceased, the target was reduced to 86 in six overs. The drama was just beginning though, as Bravo pumped his first two balls straight over Badree’s head for six before heaving a short ball over midwicket for a third in three balls to start his innings. From there on, the equation was simple.

Wolves: Lopetegui "hopeful" of securing huge in-house agreement

Wolverhampton Wanderers are looking to secure a big in-house agreement, according to talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook.

Who have been linked with exits at Molineux?

Over the course of the last few months, all three players in question have been linked with moves elsewhere as Wolves continue to endure a tumultuous summer transfer window.

In the case of Neto, Sporting Clube de Portugal have expressed an interest in taking the Portugal international on loan for the 2023/24 campaign and is said to be 'very well regarded' by the Lisbon giants, as per A Bola.

Football Insider claim that Arsenal had considered an approach for the £50k-a-week ace earlier. However, it remains to be seen whether they would re-ignite their attraction towards Neto after bringing in Kai Havertz from Chelsea.

Nunes has been mooted with a potential transfer to Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain, as per L'Equipe transcribed via Sports Mole and also Liverpool in recent months as his stock continues to rise. Contractually, the deep-lying midfielder is tied to the Old Gold until the summer of 2027 and earns around £85,000 per week at Molineux, according to Capology.

Kilman has also garnered attention this window from Serie A giants Napoli, who saw a £30 million bid rebuffed for the former Maidenhead United defender last month, as per Telegraph Sport.

Earning a modest £15,000 per week at Wolves, Kilman and his current employers are said to have opened dialogue over improved terms to fight off keen suitors, this off-season, as per The Express & Star.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, talkSPORT reporter Crook thinks that Wolves boss Lopetegui will be doing everything he can to keep the trio around despite prying eyes from elsewhere.

Crook stated: Liverpool bid on Nunes in the January transfer window, but they seem to be targeting other midfielders.

"Neto, we know that Arsenal have liked in the past, but if you look at that forward area now with Kai Havertz coming in, where is he going to play? Do they need him? Probably not.

"Kilman, the interest from Napoli was real. I think Lopetegui has made it pretty clear, maybe that's why he's coming out and saying what he has, that he doesn't want to lose him, I think he will probably end up being captain if he stays.

"So, I think they're really hopeful that he will sign a new contract."

What now for Wolverhampton Wanderers?

The fears of a Kilman exit won't be over yet and it remains to be seen as to what the club will decide should another offer come in, with Napoli now eyeing up a loan-to-buy offer for the centre-back.

Spanish coach Lopetegui will be aiming to bulk out his squad by adding some additional bodies before the end of the window, though he has been hamstrung quite severely since the start of play in the market due to the Old Gold's well-documented financial issues.

Nevertheless, recruitment will be a priority of urgency at Molineux and Stuttgart defender Konstantinos Mavropanos has been eyed as a potential defensive reinforcement, according to The Sun.

Southampton striker Che Adams.

Scotland international Che Adams has emerged as a target for Wolves and Southampton are reportedly bracing themselves for incoming bids amid further competition from Everton and Bournemouth to secure his signature, as per Football Insider.

Conversely, Wolves now look set to miss out on Bristol City talent Alex Scott after news broke that Bournemouth have swooped in to acquire the Guernsey-born playmaker, as per Telegraph Sport.

England ODI moved out of McLean Park

The Napier ODI in McLean Park between England and New Zealand has been moved due to a delay in re-turfing the ground. The game, which was scheduled for February 28, has been shifted to Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui. This is the third straight ODI that has been moved out of McLean Park after a match against Australia in February was abandoned due to poor drainage. A subsequent game against South Africa in March was moved to Hamilton. The completion of the $2 million overhaul of the McLean Park outfield, which began in October, was then delayed, forcing New Zealand Cricket to also move out the January 2018 ODI against Pakistan.Inclement weather in Auckland, where the new surface is being grown, has postponed the re-turfing process. “We’ve been advised by our sportsground turf specialist up in Auckland that the volatile weather conditions have obstructed the opportunity to get this specialised grass grown and we haven’t been able to access the 7600 tonnes of special grade sand we need to lay the carpet in time,” Napier City Council CEO Wayne Jack said.”Sadly, despite huge effort on all sides, these are factors outside of our control. We’re now revising all our time frames.”

VAR Misses Big Handball in Chelsea vs Liverpool Encounter

Anthony Taylor and his team have come under fire after failing to award a penalty to Liverpool in their clash with Chelsea following what appeared to be a handball by Blues striker Nicolas Jackson.

What’s the latest on Liverpool and VAR?

The opening weekend supplied plenty of drama in the Premier League, including at Stamford Bridge on Sunday 13 August where Chelsea hosted Liverpool.

The game finished 1-1 after Luis Diaz’s 18th-minute strike was cancelled out by new Chelsea signing Axel Disasi before half-time. Both sides had also seen first-half goals chalked off for tight offsides, Mohamed Salah for the Reds and Ben Chilwell for the Blues.

Read the latest Liverpool transfer news HERE…

The Blues were the better side over the course of the 90 minutes, although neither team created a wealth of opportunities in the second half. However, Mauricio Pochettino has to settle for a point in his first competitive game in charge of his new side.

However, things could have been very different had Liverpool been awarded a penalty in the second half as a result of a handball from another new Chelsea signing Jackson.

Dominik Szoboszlai’s corner from the left-hand side was flicked towards goal by Diaz at the near post, only to hit Jackson’s hand in a raised position. While the distance between Diaz and Jackson was short, the forward’s arm was not in a natural position, despite being close to his body.

Diaz’s header looked as if it could have been heading into the far corner, with Robert Sanchez sprawling towards his left-hand side in preparation.

It proved a controversial decision, and one that Liverpool players and fans will feel hard done by.

Should Liverpool have been awarded a penalty against Chelsea?

According to VAR (via Sky Sports), a penalty was not awarded due to “the proximity [of Jackson] from the flick-on” and because “his arms and elbows are tucked into his body”.

Speaking at the end of the game, Roy Keane admitted Jackson was “a lucky boy”, despite believing it would have been harsh to give a penalty against the forward.

However, Daniel Sturridge added: “I’d have been fuming, not gonna lie. If I’m flicking that in, that’s going bottom bin that is. I’m wheeling away in jubilation maybe. He’s gonna hit the target, so as a player, when you make that connection in the box…it’s an unnatural, natural position. It is close to him, but in a way it’s a 50/50 decision, and it’s gone Chelsea’s way.”

Lewis Dunk conceded a penalty in Brighton & Hove Albion’s 4-1 win over newly-promoted Luton Town the day before for what appeared an incredibly harsh handball, with the centre-back not even facing the ball as he dives to block a cross.

Considering that decision was given and the Jackson decision wasn’t, it’s clear to see why supporters are already annoyed at a lack of consistency in decision-making by Premier League referees.

Chelsea’s clash with Liverpool also showcased some of the Premier League’s new guidlines when it comes to dissent, with both Jackson and Alexis Mac Allister being booked for waving an imaginary yellow card after being fouled, while the game also saw a greater amount of added time in both halves to make up for time-wasting.
