Marsh's bowling takes a back seat as fellow allrounders step up

Australia’s captain will likely have a role to play against India later in the year but for now is taking things easy

Marsh: Australia vs England always a fierce battle

Mitchell Marsh has hinted that his five-month absence from the bowling crease is unlikely to come to an end during Australia’s T20I series. Marsh has not bowled in a competitive match since tearing his hamstring during the IPL, including in last week’s 3-0 clean sweep up in Scotland.Australia have an abundance of allrounders in their T20 set-up, with Jake Fraser-McGurk the only man in their squad who neither keeps wicket nor bowls. With Marsh keen to give Cameron Green and Aaron Hardie opportunities with the ball, his own medium pace is unlikely to be required.Related

England turn to young guns as T20I cycle begins again

“I’m sort of just building,” Marsh said. “I don’t tend to bowl myself too much, is the honest answer, and we’re lucky that we’ve got plenty of bowling options within our team, so we’ll see how we go… my bowling’s on line: whether or not I bowl, we’ll wait and see. We’ve got heaps of options. I’m always building something.”Australia will hope to have Marsh fully fit to bowl during their five-match Test series against India, which starts in Perth on November 22 – which he described as feeling “like a long time away”. Their management will carefully manage players workloads before that series, with Pat Cummins missing the whole England tour to give him a break from bowling.”A lot of our priorities will be geared around that,” Andrew McDonald, Australia’s coach, told on Tuesday morning. “You’ll see that unfold with the management of our players. We’ll be very pointed around who does what in terms of [Sheffield] Shield cricket coming into the summer to make sure that they are ready for that first Test match.”Australia play Pakistan in three ODIs and three T20Is in November, and it is expected that anyone included in the Test squad won’t feature in the T20Is. “We may have to give up a little bit in terms of that Pakistan white-ball series with certain players, to make sure that we are firmly prepared,” McDonald said. “We’re really keen for India to arrive.”This UK tour is Australia’s first men’s cricket since their Super Eight exit in June’s T20 World Cup, which saw them win their first five matches before back-to-back defeats against Afghanistan and India saw them crash out. Marsh has retained the T20 captaincy – and will also step in for Cummins in the five ODIs against England – but was coy on his long-term ambitions.”It feels like a lifetime ago now, that T20 World Cup,” Marsh said. “It was just disappointment: we went there with the hope of winning it, like every other team did, and unfortunately, we didn’t play our best cricket at the right time. In tournament play, that’s what you rely on…there’s a lot of cricket to be played between now and the next World Cup [in 2026] but hopefully I’m there.”McDonald isolated Australia’s fielding as the primary reason for their failure to reach the semi-finals, most notably dropping five catches in the defeat to Afghanistan. “We’ve got a few things that we need to work through, but clearly the key area for us that was disappointing was our fielding… that makes it really difficult for the captain and the team to function.”There was some discussion around Mitch Marsh and his captaincy, but if creating opportunities for the team with your bowling changes and your field positions is the way that we’re going to critique a captain, I thought he did a fantastic job. We just weren’t able to execute in those moments, and that really played out in the Afghanistan game.”

Fabrizio Romano shares photo of £55m player travelling to sign for Arsenal

Fabrizio Romano has shared a transfer update out of Arsenal, with Mikel Arteta’s side closing in on another summer signing ahead of their fourth-successive challenge for a Premier League title.

Arsenal prepared to bid £55m for star, four-year contract at the ready too

Andrea Berta is swiftly moving on to his next target after Viktor Gyokeres.

ByEmilio Galantini Jul 26, 2025

Arteta’s side fell desperately short in their bid for title glory last season, lagging 10 points behind eventual champions Liverpool by the final matchday, and this can be put down to a number of factors.

Injuries to key players like Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard, Kai Havertz and more seriously hampered the Gunners, with Arsenal also struggling to break down teams in the low block to an even greater extent than their previous two campaigns.

The north Londoners scored just 69 league goals, far beneath their totals of 91 and 88 in 23/24 and 22/23 respectively. This resulted in Arsenal drawing more matches than any other side in the top 10, so new sporting director Andrea Berta is actively working to add more creativity to their attack in response.

After striking a potential £55 million deal, including add-ons, for England winger Noni Madueke, it is widely reported that Arsenal will accelerate their plans to sign Crystal Palace playmaker Eberechi Eze.

Reports this week suggest Berta is prepared to pay £55m for Eze (TEAMtalk), but Palace are determined to hold for his full release clause.

Their pursuit of the former QPR star will happen immediately after they finally sealed a full agreement for Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres, who comes as an especially crucial signing for Arteta.

Viktor Gyokeres pictured travelling to sign for Arsenal

A breakthrough was reached earlier this week for Gyokeres, with Arsenal set to pay an initial fee of around £55 million for the Swede that could rise to £64 million if bonuses and add-ons are achieved (The Athletic).

The 27-year-old is expected to undergo a medical today before signing his contract, and Romano has now dropped an exclusive photo of Gyokeres travelling to Arsenal with his agent, Hesin Cetinkaya, who was crucial in making the transfer happen.

Romano adds that Gyokeres “only” wanted Arsenal.

The former Coventry City forward is fresh off the back of a stunning 54-goal campaign at Sporting, helping Rui Borges’ men to their first domestic double in around two decades, and Gyokeres is tipped to be a potentially game-changing arrival.

His signing puts an end to both a long-winded transfer saga and Arsenal’s search for a proven, goalscoring number nine – with on-lookers understandably very excited by the prospect of him in red and white.

Gyokeres will also wear the number 14 shirt once donned by club legend Thierry Henry.

£70m star open to Aston Villa move, he's "heard good things" about Emery

Aston Villa have now been handed a boost in their pursuit of a £70m forward, with transfer expert Graeme Bailey revealing he would be open to a move to Villa Park this summer.

Aston Villa eager to sign new forwards

It has been clear that Villa need to sign a striker since the January transfer window, at which point they sold Jhon Duran to Al-Nassr, and the need to bring in a centre-forward could be exacerbated by the departure of Ollie Watkins.

Manchester United have held talks over a deal for Watkins, which means the Villans have started to run the rule over replacements, and Paris Saint-Germain’s Randal Kolo Muani has entered the frame as a potential option.

Besiktas’ Semih Kilicsoy also remains of interest, alongside Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson, with Unai Emery’s side now ready to make a move for the striker, should he become available later this summer.

After losing Duran in the January transfer window, versatile forward Marcus Rashford was brought in, but with the Manchester United man now Barcelona-bound, Emery is also keen on bringing in a forward capable of playing out wide.

Last week, it was revealed that Aston Villa have made an approach for Man United’s Alejandro Garnacho, who could be valued at £70m, and there has now been another update on their pursuit of the forward.

According to a report from The Boot Room, Garnacho is open to a move to Villa Park this summer, given that he is keen to remain in the Premier League and play under Emery.

Aston Villa keen on £21m international star but he's already in talks with Man City

Aston Villa are the latest team to show an interest in a player who has a low release clause until the end of July.

Bailey added: “Alejandro Garnacho wants to stay in England, and there are only so many options. Chelsea, we know, like him, whilst Tottenham have maintained contact.

“But Aston Villa have emerged as an option, I am told the player has done his homework on the possibility of working with Unai Emery, and he has heard good things.”

Garnacho could be "amazing" signing for Aston Villa

Amid doubts surrounding Jacob Ramsey’s future, it could be very important to bring in a new signing capable of playing at left-wing this summer, and the 21-year-old has picked up 31 goals and 17 assists in 110 appearances from that area, including games at youth level.

Ruben Amorim has also singled out the youngster for high praise, describing him as “amazing” after an impressive performance in Manchester United’s 1-1 draw against Arsenal last season.

Alejandro Garnacho in action for Manchester United.

That said, given that Villa are treading a fine line PSR-wise, it may not be financially prudent to shell out £70m on a player yet to record world-class numbers.

Garnacho amassed a respectable six goals and two assists in the Premier League last season, but his performances are yet to justify a £70m outlay, so it may only be worth Villa making a move if the winger becomes available for a lower price.

Renshaw fifty in vain as rain and bad light win to leave points shared

Queensland and Tasmania share the points after only 16 overs were possible due to rain and bad light, with Renshaw posting 51 off 36

ESPNcricinfo staff25-Sep-2024Matt Renshaw’s first half-century of a new summer was the only shining light on an otherwise gloomy day in Melbourne as Queensland and Tasmania shared the One-Day Cup points on offer after rain and bad light meant only 16 overs were possible.Renshaw made 51 off 36 balls with four fours and three sixes as Queensland posted 128 for 5 from the only play possible on a day where rain delayed the start by four-and-a-half hours and bad light ended it early.Persistent rain fell at the Junction Oval on Wednesday ensuring no play was possible until 2.30pm. The rain meant the match was shortened to a 20-over affair, albeit with 50-over powerplay rules in place. Tasmania unsurprisingly sent Queensland in having been skittled by Victoria on the same surface two days earlier. They made early breakthroughs with Gabe Bell removing Ben McDermott while Beau Webster picked up Max Bryant. Renshaw and new Queensland recruit Lachlan Hearne then shared a 79-run stand in just 8.4 overs. They struck seven fours and four sixes between them before Webster broke the stand.Matt Kuhnemann got his first wicket for his new state against his old side, bowling former team-mate Jack Wildermuth for 8. Hearne holed out to deep midwicket off Bell in the 15th over before the umpires checked the light after 16 overs and called a halt to proceedings. Play never resumed and the points were shared.Queensland will remain in Melbourne and face Victoria on Friday with Australia Test opener Usman Khawaja set to play after missing the clash with Tasmania.

Maxwell sets up Australia win in seven-over thrash

Pakistan slumped to 24 for six in the first four overs before finishing with 64 for nine

Danyal Rasool14-Nov-2024It was a shortened game at the Gabba, and Australia made short work of it. After persistent rain and lightning delayed the start by nearly three hours and reduced the game to a seven-over shootout, Australia inflicted a crushing 29-run defeat upon Pakistan. Glenn Maxwell, who struggled in the preceding ODI series, blasted his way through the innings with 43 off 19, before Pakistan slumped to 24 for six in the first four overs before finishing with 64 for nine.Mohammad Rizwan called correctly at the toss and unsurprisingly put Australia in. But the hosts had a clarity of purpose from the outset, looking to hit a boundary off every ball, aware that wickets didn’t really matter as much. Shaheen Shah Afridi was plundered for 16 off his first over to set the tone, and though Haris Rauf’s tight first over had Maxwell flailing, the tide would turn soon.Maxwell deployed the reverse slog expertly, using the bowlers’ pace to get his shots away. Afridi was spectacularly dismissed over third man for six, before he ripped into Rauf, his ODI tormentor, smashing 19 off his second over. When he holed out to Abbas Afridi, Tim David and Marcus Stoinis picked up the baton, with Stoinis’ 20 off Naseem in the final over seeing Australia surge to 93.Xavier Bartlett stuck twice in his first over back for Australia•Getty ImagesPakistan began the innings with Sahibzada Farhan biffing two boundaries off the first two balls, but that’s as good as the chase got for the visitors. Spencer Johnson got him two balls later. It began a remarkable passage of play where five wickets fell in 12 balls for eight runs. Mohammad Rizwan sliced Xavier Bartlett to backward point for a duck, and Usman Khan sent one down deep third man’s throat later in the over.Babar Azam – who came in at number three – miscued a half-volley down to long-off off Nathan Ellis’ first ball, with Irfan Khan joining him two balls later. When Salman Ali Agha, debutant and vice-captain, skied one off Ellis, Pakistan were staring down the barrel of an enormous defeat, despite the heavily curtailed nature of the game. But Pakistan managed to restore some respectability to the scoreline in the final three overs, primarily when Haseebullah Khan and Abbas managed 18 off the fifth over. Wickets would continue to fall, though, with Ellis snaring Haseebullah for his third wicket. When Adam Zampa came in to bowl the final over, Shaheen managed to smear one over long-on for six, but in an innings characterised by clumps of wickets falling quickly, that Zampa signed off with consecutive wickets of his final two balls was a fitting end.

Real Madrid plot blockbuster move for Man Utd star Amorim has praised in pre-season

Amid all the excitement over Benjamin Sesko’s potential arrival, Real Madrid have now reportedly sent their scouts to watch one of Manchester United’s best players as they plot a blockbuster move.

Sesko chooses Man Utd over Newcastle

It’s been a successful summer for Manchester United so far, all things considered. The Red Devils have welcomed both Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo to hand their frontline a major boost, whilst also enjoying an impressive pre-season.

In their latest friendly, the Red Devils eased past Bournemouth in the Premier League Summer Series in a 4-1 victory which featured a much-needed goal from Rasmus Hojlund.

After getting his name on the scoresheet, the Dane also took the chance to add some clarity to his future, telling reporters: “I think the most important (thing) for me is just to keep working hard and stay focused and then obviously we’ll see what happens. I think my plan is very clear and that is for me to stay and fight for my spot, whatever happens.”

That said, fighting for that spot could be about to become far more difficult amid reports that Sesko has now set his sights on moving to Manchester United this summer.

The RB Leipzig forward has been the subject of a £65m transfer battle between Manchester United and Newcastle, but now reportedly prefers a move to Old Trafford.

If INEOS complete their third big-money move of the summer, Ruben Amorim’s frontline will suddenly be transformed. From blunter than ever, United will have three impressive goalscorers to choose from next season. And that would make all the difference.

As one big-money signing potentially arrives, however, one big-money exit could deal Amorim an almighty blow.

Real Madrid set sights on blockbuster Mainoo move

According to reports in Spain, Real Madrid are now plotting a move to sign Kobbie Mainoo in a blockbuster deal worth as much as £70m. Scouts have already reportedly been sent to watch the England international at Old Trafford and new manager Xabi Alonso has earmarked both Adam Wharton and the Carrington graduate as midfield targets.

Bad news for Onana: Man Utd make contact for "incredible" star after Sesko

Manchester United are making huge moves in the transfer market this summer.

ByEthan Lamb Jul 31, 2025

It’s bad news for Amorim, who will be aware like most that Madrid often get what they desire in the transfer market. The Manchester United boss knows exactly how talented Mainoo is, too. It was only last week that the former Sporting Club manager spoke about how his midfielder could help captain Bruno Fernandes.

At 20 years old, Mainoo is not a talent that Manchester United will want to lose anytime soon, which should spark plenty of concern about Real Madrid’s presence.

In 2007, Messi played in a 0-0 Champions League group stage draw with Rangers in his only visit to Ibrox.

He fared much better on the other side of Glasgow against Celtic, though, scoring braces in victories in 2008 and 2016, while also getting on the scoresheet in a shock 2-1 defeat in 2012.

He came up against Fraser Forster as the Hoops defeated Barcelona, with Messi later admitting he was left shocked by the goalkeeper’s display that evening.

“The performance of Fraser Forster against us was talked about for a long time. There was one game in Scotland when he was not human, it was the best goalkeeping performance I have seen. When Victor Valdes said that he was leaving Barcelona we even talked about him playing here.”

Talking in 2015, Messi was asked to name the best stadium atmosphere he has ever experienced as a player. He named Celtic over Rangers, describing Parkhead as “special”, “a tough place to go” and “the best” in Europe.

Messi, who is now with Inter Miami in the United States of America, may never play at Parkhead again, but his three visits to Glasgow certainly left a mark on one of the best footballers to ever play the game.

Jonathan David reveals transfer offer from Inter as new Juventus signing confident of strong Dusan Vlahovic partnership

Jonathan David confirmed that he received offers from another top Italian team, while also addressing competing for the No.9 spot with Dusan Vlahovic.

David still in his early days at JuveConfirms that Inter tried to sign himBelieves he can co-exist with VlahovicFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

David was signed by Juventus this summer in an attempt to secure the club's next reliable centre-forward, while they attempted to sell Vlahovic due to his huge wages. However, the Canadian marksman has no qualms that he could form a lethal strike partnership with the Serbian in attack. There was a small possibility, though, of David joining Juve's bitter Serie A rivals.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Signed from Fiorentina in January 2022, Vlahovic was expected to fill the void left by Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored over a century of goals in just three seasons at the Allianz Stadium. However, he could only score 58 goals in 145 games, as Juventus failed to win the league. The only trophy the Bianconeri have won since Vlahovic's arrival is the Coppa Italia in the 2023-24 season.

A move to AC Milan seemed to be on the cards, but the 25-year-old was adamant on not halving his wages to switch to San Siro. Newcastle were rumoured to hold interest, too, but a move did not materialise. All attempts made by Juve to offload Vlahovic, who has entered the final year of his contract, were futile. However, it seems that he could get a chance to revive his career under new head coach Igor Tudor, despite playing second-fiddle to David. Indeed, the Belgrade-born striker has scored twice in as many substitute appearances in the league, recording a goal every 19 minutes. David, as such, firmly believes that a two-man strike partnership with him and Vlahovic could work out perfectly.

WHAT JONATHAN DAVID SAID

Ahead of Juve's blockbuster clash against Inter in the Derby d'Italia this weekend, David confirmed that the Nerazzurri were keen on signing him. "Not that close. I've had discussions with my agent, but they haven't been in-depth. I'm very happy at Juventus," David told .

On whether he can thrive with Vlahovic, David added: "Yes, it's possible. But these are decisions for the coach, it's more of a question for Tudor. I'm ready for any solution and I'm having fun no matter what. Dusan and I push each other on the pitch because we want the best for the team. I feel comfortable in both situations; they're systems I know. In recent seasons, I've played as a lone striker for the club, but for the national team, I've always partnered with another striker. It's not a big difference for me; I enjoy it either way."
