Tottenham in contact over midfielder with 12 goals and 11 assists in 24/25

Tottenham Hotspur have made an enquiry to sign a Europa League midfielder ahead of interest from the likes of Aston Villa and Manchester City.

Tottenham fall to first leg Europa League defeat against AZ Alkmaar

Spurs fell to a fourth defeat from their last six games in all competitions on Thursday evening, losing 1-0 to AZ Alkmaar in the first leg of their last 16 Europa League tie.

An own-goal from Lucas Bergvall in the first half means Ange Postecoglou’s side have it all to do in the second leg, and the manager wasn’t impressed with what he saw from his Spurs side.

“It wasn’t good, not a great result… actually the result was probably the best thing out of it in that we’re still very much in the tie. We were nowhere near the level we needed to be, a disappointing night overall.

“It’s hard to say at the moment, but we just didn’t get to grips with the game, at all. We know it was a tricky surface, we knew that from (training) yesterday, but we just didn’t handle it well, really struggled with any sort of intent.

“We weren’t aggressive with the ball, weren’t aggressive without the ball and we just allowed the opposition to play the game on their terms. Every away game in Europe is tricky, we understand that, we prepared the players for that, but it’s fair to say we didn’t handle it.”

To rub salt into the wound, striker Dominic Solanke was also replaced after suffering an injury and may now be in a race to take on his former side Bournemouth this weekend.

Away from the pitch, though, Tottenham appear to be working behind the scenes on potential summer signings, with Southampton forward Tyler Dibling linked with a move to north London.

Dibling reportedly wants to join Spurs after talks, whereas Eintracht Frankfurt midfielder Hugo Larsson is also on Tottenham’s radar.

Another midfielder of interest to Spurs appears to be Viktoria Pilsen midfielder Pavel Sulc, with an update recently emerging on the 24-year-old and a potential move to England.

Tottenham make enquiry over move for impressive midfielder

According to reports in the Czech Republic, relayed by Sport Witness, Tottenham have made an enquiry over a move to sign Sulc from Viktoria Pilsen.

Aston Villa have also made contact over Sulc, whereas Manchester City have sent scouts to watch the Czech Republic international.

Sulc is personally waiting for a ‘big transfer’, and with his current contract set to expire in 2026, Viktoria Pilsen could sell this summer instead of potentially losing him for free a year later.

Hardie makes strides after Scorchers batting promotion

The allrounder is already on the radar of the national selectors and has made the most of a chance to bat No. 3

AAP20-Jan-2023Touted for Test selection by Ricky Ponting, West Australian allrounder Aaron Hardie looms as a multi-format star in the making after continuing a superb BBL season.Hardie’s imperious form since being promoted to No. 3 has been a key factor in Perth Scorchers making yet another run at the title. The 24-year-old again starred in Wednesday night’s seven-wicket win over Hobart Hurricanes at Optus Stadium, plundering an unbeaten 90 off 62 balls as the Scorchers easily chased their target of 147.Four-time champions Scorchers sit atop the BBL ladder with two games remaining and have lost just once at their home fortress.Related

Hardie has scored four half-centuries since being elevated to first-drop to replace the injured Mitchell Marsh, who noted during the broadcast he might have to consider handing over the No. 3 slot for good. The young gun has shown an ability to adapt his game across formats, having scored a remarkable 174 not out in last season’s drawn Sheffield Shield final to secure WA the title.All-time great Ponting floated Hardie as a bolter for the Sydney Test against South Africa, and the towering right-hander who averages 45 with the bat in first-class cricket seems destined for higher honours. That could include the IPL, with fellow West Australian fast-bowling allrounder Cameron Green recently sold at auction for $3.15 million – a record price for an Australian player.Hardie did not nominate this season and is believed to be considering a return to county cricket which could place him in the sights of national selectors ahead of the Ashes series.”I’ve put my name in the draft before but didn’t put my name in this year for various reasons,” Hardie told reporters after Wednesday night’s game. “Obviously if you put a number like that on the end of it, it’s silly to say no.”I don’t really want to pigeonhole myself into any sort of format. Just being able to contribute in all the games possible. That allrounder role takes its toll on the body in four-day cricket but I also love that challenge…I’m enjoying playing all three while I can.”Hardie has not bowled in the BBL since straining his groin earlier this season but said he was ready if needed, although that may be unlikely given the Scorchers’ enviable depth.Lance Morris snared 2 for 21 against the Hurricanes after being named in Australia’s squad to tour India next month. Spurs "magician" could become Iraola's new Kluivert if he replaces Ange

This time last week, Tottenham Hotspur were preparing to overturn their 1-0 deficit to AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League.

That victory not only saw them make it through to the competition’s quarter-finals but also took the mounting pressure off of Ange Postecoglou’s shoulders.

Tottenham Hotspur manager AngePostecoglou

However, that pressure was quickly piled on again when the North Londoners fell to a dismal defeat away to Fulham in the Premier League.

With yet another league defeat under Postecoglou’s belt, links to potential replacements have been rife again, with Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola seemingly among the favourites.

If the Spaniard were to get the job, he could turn one of Postecoglou’s marquee signings into his new Justin Kluivert.

Justin Kluivert for Bournemouth.

Why Iraola could be a great Postecoglou replacement

So, with recent reports indicating that Iraola is a genuine candidate to replace Postecoglou at the end of the season, why would that be good for Spurs?

Manager Focus

Who are the greatest coaches in the land? Football FanCast’s Manager Focus series aims to reveal all.

Well, the first and most straightforward answer is that despite losing his star striker to the Lilywhites in the summer, dealing with his own injury crisis earlier in the campaign and generally having less money to play with, he’s doing a better job this year.

As things stand, Bournemouth are tenth in the Premier League, with 12 wins, eight draws and just nine defeats to their name, while Spurs are down in 14th, with just ten wins, seven draws and a whopping 15 defeats to theirs.

Moreover, despite taking over the Cherries when they were one of the favourites to get relegated, the Spaniard’s overall record of 1.49 points per game on the south coast is only marginally worse than the Australian’s record of 1.59 points per game, which includes the incredible start to last season.

Overall, while Postecoglou has been able to make Tottenham more attacking, he’s clearly struggling, even with his star players back, so seeing him replaced by Iraola in the summer wouldn’t be a massive shock.

Furthermore, the former Rayo Vallecano boss might be able to get even more out of the North Londoners’ stars, especially one who could be his new Kluivert.

Iraola's new Kluivert

If Iraola were to take charge of Spurs in the summer and lead them into next season, then there are a few candidates who could see their form improved in a way similar to Kluivert at Bournemouth, from Brennan Johnson to Dejan Kulusevski.

However, when it really comes down to it, there is one player who we can see becoming as crucial to the Spaniard in North London as the Dutchman is to him on the south coast: James Maddison.

There are a few reasons for this, with the first being that, like the Cherries ace, the Englishman is a technically brilliant player who can, and very occasionally has, played off the left in the past, but primarily thrives in an attacking midfield role.

Moreover, while the former Leicester City ace can and does get involved in play across the pitch, he is at his very best on the edge of the opponent’s penalty area, either playing a teammate in with an exquisite ball or timing his run perfectly to put the ball in the back of the net himself.

For example, despite being criticised at points this season, the “incredible” midfielder, as dubbed by talent scout Jacek Kulig, has scored 11 goals and provided seven assists in 38 appearances this term, resulting in a goal involvement every 2.11 games on average.

For his part, the former Ajax star has been one of the most impressive players in the top-flight this term, dazzling Premier League defences on his way to scoring 13 goals and providing seven assists in 32 appearances for Bournemouth this term.

It’s a fine record, one that comes out to an average of a goal involvement every 1.6 games, and shows that Maddison – a fellow “magician” in the words of Statman Dave, can be the creative heart of the team.

Ultimately, if Ange is to be replaced in the summer, Iraola looks like a brilliant candidate to do so, and as he has done with Kluivert, he could help supercharge Maddison.

The Bavarian giants reclaimed the Bundesliga title in the 2024-25 season but remain eager to strengthen their squad over the summer. Bayern had been keen on Florian Wirtz but look set to miss out on the Bayer Leverkusen star to Liverpool. Vincent Kompany's side have therefore now turned their attention to Dutch forward Cody Gakpo, according to reporter Christian Falk.

Gakpo's versatility makes him an attractive proposition as he can play on the left or as a back-up to top scorer Harry Kane. According to Falk, Bayern are also looking at Rafael Leao and Karou Mitoma who are considered more "realistic targets" than Gakpo at present. Bayern would have to sell out around €50 million (£42m) to land Gakpo, per Sky Sport Germany.

Sussex steady as rain cuts deeper into Gloucestershire's season

Sussex reach 47 for 1 with only 16 overs possible on first day in Bristol

ECB Reporters Network27-Apr-2023Gloucestershire’s misfortune with the weather continued as only 16 overs were possible on the opening day of the LV= Insurance County Championship match with Sussex at Bristol.Having seen their opening home game against Yorkshire washed out without a ball bowled and then been denied a probable victory at Worcester by rain, the hosts suffered more frustration when covers were brought on at the Seat Unique Stadium with little more than an hour played.Sussex had reached 47 for 1 when the drizzle started. As forecast, it turned into heavier rain by early afternoon and further saturated an outfield that was soft at the outset. Umpires Billy Taylor and Mark Newell took the decision to abandon play for the day at 3.15pm, by which time there was standing water on several areas and seagulls wading on the covers. What action there was saw Marchant de Lange strike an early blow after Gloucestershire had won the toss, Sussex opener Tom Haines being snapped up at gully by Miles Hammond looking to play a wide delivery off the back foot.Haines departed for 3 with the total on 9 in the third over, Ali Orr having already lifted Tom Price for a six over midwicket from the 11th ball of the match.Price, fresh from a maiden century and a hat-trick on the same day at Worcester, was not at his best, conceding 19 from his initial three-over spell from the Ashley Down Road End. De Lange was more accurate and ended his opening stint from the Pavilion End with figures of 1 for 5 from five overs, including three maidens.Orr had hit Price for another boundary off a no-ball and greeted the seamer’s switch of ends with a superb driven four through extra cover.Ajeet Dale was the third Gloucestershire bowler used and he sent down five tidy overs for ten runs having replaced Price. The floodlights were already on when play ceased at 12.05pm and, although the rain was light to start with, ground staff aware of the forecast for an afternoon deluge quickly brought on the heavy covers. Orr was unbeaten on 31, having looked in good touch, while Tom Alsop was 11 not out.

Chelsea may be brewing Estevao 2.0 in 19 y/o with the "world at his feet"

Chelsea’s pursuit of the finest South American talent isn’t slowing down. The Blues have been linked with a move for Millonarios teenager Nesyer Villarreal, even sending scouts to monitor his display against Santa Fe in midweek.

Last summer, the club signed Brazilian teenager Estevao for a fee in the region of £29m, but he will remain with his club until July, joining the Blues after the FIFA Club World Cup.

Young Brazilian star Estevao Willian

“All the time, I’m very anxious to go.” The youngster said on the Denilson show when asked about his move to England. Will he live up to the lofty expectations?

Why Chelsea signed Estevao

The teenager doesn’t turn 18 until April, but he has already begun to showcase his incredible talents for Palmeiras since making his debut for the club in 2023.

Across 60 senior games for the Brazilian side, Estevao has scored 20 times while chipping in with ten assists, which works out as a goal contribution once every two matches.

The right-winger even made his debut for Brazil in September last year, going on to appear another three times for his country. A big future ahead indeed.

An extra year with Palmeiras should hopefully give him more confidence before making the move to Chelsea ahead of the 2025/26 season.

If Maresca gets things right next term, the Blues could have a formidable squad, packed with some of the finest young talents on the globe.

Could the manager even be brewing his own homegrown Estevao too? As youngster, Tyrique George has begun to make a solid impact for the club.

Chelsea could be brewing their own Estevao

During the 2023/24 season, George starred for the U18s, netting nine goals and grabbing six assists in the U18 Premier League for the Blues.

These displays meant the Englishman was given a chance by Maresca this term and has already featured in 17 matches for the Stamford Bridge outfit, mirroring Estevao in typically operating on the flanks.

Tyrique George

Nine of those have come in the Conference League, a competition used as a chance to unleash young talent by the manager.

George has managed to create three big chances throughout the competition while averaging 1.4 key passes per game and succeeding with 1.5 dribbles each match – a success rate of 60%.

Highly impressive indeed. Teammate Jadon Sancho knows a thing or two about bursting onto the scene before becoming one of the finest young talents on the continent and he said that George “has the world at his feet” in a post on X last year.

If he continues developing and gaining first-team experience, the 19-year-old could be the next big thing to emerge from the Cobham academy, no doubt about that.

Will Estevao’s arrival limit his game time, however? That much remains to be seen. Although while all the focus will be on the Blues’ incoming Brazilian sensation, the west London side do already have their own wing wizard brewing in the form of George.

There remains a continued push to scour the globe for the very best young talents, yet having witnessed the success of the likes of Reece James and Mason Mount in recent years, Maresca and co must not ignore the wealth of talent being developed in the academy ranks. George included…

Ben Stokes reaps rewards of IPL gymwork after playing the 'John Terry role' at CSK

England captain looks to be leaner despite limited playing time in India this winter

Vithushan Ehantharajah31-May-2023It’s not often you get to the eve of the Test summer and an England captain likens himself to a Chelsea footballer. But such are the demands on a modern cricketer like Ben Stokes, the comparison made sense.”I played a little bit of a John Terry role winning the IPL,” the allrounder joked during press commitments at Lord’s a couple of days after Chennai Super Kings won a thrilling final in Ahmedabad. Terry famously lifted the Champions League trophy in 2012 dressed in his full Chelsea kit despite missing the final against Bayern Munich through suspension. While Stokes did not go fully yellow, a winner’s medal is on its way to a player who made just two appearances despite joining the franchise for INR 16.25 crore (£1.6 million approx). The last of those was on April 3.Stokes has been back in the UK for two weeks and watched the Ravi Jadeja-inspired victory over Gujarat Titans on his phone in the bar of the Royal Garden Hotel in Kensington, where England are staying for the Ireland Test. He will likely bag a win bonus, too, and any other extras the owners wish to bestow upon the playing group after a fifth IPL title.Perhaps Ledley King would be a more accurate England centre-back to draw parallels with, considering where Stokes is at right now. A Tottenham Hotspur legend, King was blighted by issues to his left knee throughout his career, not too dissimilar to what the Test skipper has been dealing with since 2017. King managed his issue by limiting training between games. Stokes is following suit.Taking cues from the 40-year-old James Anderson, Stokes has opted to limit his bowling between Tests. He has not bowled at all this week, believing there are a finite number of overs left in a body with much more than its 31 years on the clock.”Before I didn’t have to worry about that,” he said on Wednesday. “I could just bowl and bowl and bowl and turn up pretty fresh. Now I’m probably not able to do that, so in between games is probably the most important bit of managing anything correctly.”The thing about me is that I don’t need much bowling for the rest of my body to tick over. I can have quite a lot of time off and then build up quite quickly. It’s not doom and gloom if I do or don’t bowl in this game.”Ben Stokes did not bowl during England’s practice sessions at Lord’s but is ready for action when required•Getty ImagesNevertheless, he declares himself fit enough to bowl at Lord’s if required and to send down however many overs required of him throughout the Ashes, too. Even at face value, it is a huge improvement in attitude above all else. He was deflated by his knee at the end of February after the New Zealand series, and that in turn was affecting his batting. To go by his net sessions this week, that is no longer the case. There had been fears before his IPL stint that Stokes would return from India more broken than before, but those did not eventuate. Instead, the lack of playing time meant he ended up using the world’s premiere T20 competition as a glorified training camp.”I think I would much rather have been playing,” Stokes said. “I’ve then seen that as an opportunity to train as opposed to playing and then topping yourself up as the tournament goes along. Once you get into the tournament it’s like play, travel, all that kind of stuff. So, I was actually able to turn a disappointing situation into a positive one because I was able to concentrate on properly being able to train, whether that be technical stuff with the bat or fitness stuff, stuff in the gym and being able to concentrate on something else.”And that was a really good way to get through that long period of having something else to focus on, as opposed to being disappointed I wasn’t playing. So looking back on it, you might say it’s disappointing to only play two games but I was able to then do something else. Sitting here today, I’m actually thinking it could have been a blessing in disguise – every cloud has a silver lining.”Related

'We know England are going to come at us. They're changing the way Test cricket is played'

Inside the first month of Stokes' captaincy

The work put in is noticeable. Though you’d never say he was overweight – certainly not to his face – Stokes’ more pronounced cheekbones suggest he’s back to the sort of lean figure that marked his stellar year in 2019. Considering a bowler of his pace will put around eight times his body weight through that troublesome left knee at the moment of delivery, it will help him deliver as a functional allrounder this summer.Given the game’s direction of travel, you might regard Stokes’ use of the IPL as a training camp as a crass victory for the diehard traditionalists, though only a player of his stature has the privilege to do such a thing. His lack of playing time will not have affected his stock with CSK, who have an eye on him leading them in the future when MS Dhoni decides to call time. But they may think twice about extending it on the same terms in 2023.To have arrived back primed for the red ball, even in lieu of a run-out in the County Championship for Durham, means Stokes is something of an outlier, albeit a very specific one given his situation. Ahead of a home season in which the longest format is considering its very existence, as franchise competitions multiply and encroach on previously sacred turf, Stokes – a self-proclaimed “huge advocate of the Test format” -acknowledges both codes are up against each other. Though not necessarily in a bad way.”The whole landscape and the whole game of cricket is literally just changing in front of everyone’s eyes so quickly. I see T20 and Test cricket being able to keep being successful and progress side by side.”Look at what T20 has done for the game in general, the amount of attraction it’s brought, new fans, new players it’s brought into playing cricket regardless of the format. And also what T20 has been able to bring in terms of Test cricket. The transition between the two games is so different but at certain periods in Test matches you do see that T20 side come out, which is only because the players have been playing it. So, I don’t see a world where T20 and Tests aren’t being played in the future.”He cedes that commitment to a brand of cricket reliant on ignoring risk and blue-ticking fear may be a little trickier given the excitement around the five-Test series against Australia just around the corner.”It’s hard to ignore and not see,” he said of the anticipation. “I don’t know what this build-up period before the Ashes is like compared to 2005, no idea, it’s very hard to ignore and not be able to see the excitement.”It is Ireland first, however. A one-off four-day fixture even the visitors regard as a distraction given their own bigger carrot of June’s World Cup qualifiers in Zimbabwe. A reminder that whatever trepidation there may be of the new world, the old one was far from equal.

USWNT Rondo: Assessing Lily Yohannes' high ceiling, Alyssa Thompson's starting status, and Emma Hayes' first full year on the job

GOAL and INDIVISA writers debate the state of the USWNT after two impressive showings in international friendlies

Another window, another excellent pair of results for the USWNT. Emma Hayes has the U.S. rolling once again. Entering the friendlies, the USWNT was coming off a pair of close losses earlier this year – to Japan and Brazil – and was playing with a roster missing three of its top players in Sophia Wilson, Trinity Rodman and Mallory Swanson.

But with back-to-back wins – 3-0 over China last weekend and then 4-0 over Jamaica on Tuesday – Hayes improved her USWNT record to 18-2-2 since debuting with the team last June, and reinforcing her status as one of the best managers in the game.

She's been excellent in her first year in charge. It's not just the Olympic gold medal. The former Chelsea boss has ushered in a new era of talent, expanded the player pool, and showed why this side could be very, very good for many years to come. And this window was no different.

Her favored front three are all out? No worries, here's a rejuvenated Alyssa Thompson and a charging Ally Sentnor. Need help in central midfield? How about the tempo-controlling 17-year-old Lily Yohannes?

It all makes for positive vibes around a team that has an admittedly long ramp to the next major tournament in the 2027 World Cup. The results are good, but are they meaningful?

And with questions around an uncertain goalkeeper situation, are the U.S. any closer to figuring out who will be between the sticks when the games start to count for something?

GOAL and INDIVISA writers debate the state of the USWNT after a pair of impressive showings in international friendlies in the latest edition of… The Rondo.

Getty ImagesWho was the surprise performer in this camp?

Ryan Tolmich: She's only turns 18 next week, but there aren't many better passers in the world than Yohannes. She's rapidly evolving into one of the most fun players to watch in the USWNT, largely due to her innate ability to make the near-impossible look so effortless. Her passing range is ridiculous, as is her vision, allowing her to dictate games in ways that few players in the world can. The scary thing is that she's getting better, too. If she can add some goals to her game, Yohannes will be a special, special player – and in truth, she probably already is.

Celia Balf: Lo’eau LaBonta. Being called into camp and then earning her first cap at 32 years old was absolutely something special. But the way she fit into the game with the utmost poise and delivery showed she deserved to be out there – and be out there. The midfield is a tough place to enter on the USWNT, yet she came in for Cat Macario in win over China as the nine and held her own. And then she came in for Sam Coffey in the midfield against Jamaica.

Jacob Schneider: The real surprise was from someone who didn't perform. It was rather strange that Crystal Dunn didn't get a look. Seems her veteran presence might be appreciated a bit more – tough for her to not get in against Jamaica, and – unless there was some injury issue – perhaps this is a sign that she's on the outside looking in.

AdvertisementGetty Images Is Alyssa Thompson a starter going forward?

RT: Until someone proves otherwise, absolutely. Even when Triple Espresso does come back, they might return to a USWNT featuring a very different version of Thompson – one that has taken a huge leap forward in confidence and ability. Her pace makes her an absolute menace, while her decision-making in front of goal has seemingly improved, as well. No attacker is just walking into a fully fit starting lineup, given the amount of options up front. But Thompson made a strong case to be a go-to starter.

CB: Yep. Her speed is unmatched on the wing, plus she has been involved in almost every goal the USWNT has scored in the past few games. She may not be scoring much herself – yet – but her delivery, and the chaos that she brings to the opponent’s backline is on another level. She also complements Cat Macario really well with runs off of her.

JS: Absolutely, especially with Wilson, Rodman Swanson all unavailable. Without question, she is a locked-in starter.

Getty Images Sport What are the takeaways from the goalkeeper competition?

RT: Realistically, not much, except for the fact that Phallon Tullis-Joyce is Hayes' pick for No. 1 at the moment. That situation is fluid, of course, but the fact that the Manchester United goalkeeper started both games is a pretty clear indication that she is, at the very least, near the top of the list. There will be other opportunities for the contenders in the future, but for now, Tullis-Joyce has done nothing to hurt her case to be the USWNT starter.

CB: Hayes has Tullis-Joyce at the top, for now. Earning back-to-back starts is a statement, and two clean sheets is another. Granted, Tullis-Joyce hasn’t been fully tested, with both games being snooze-fests for the USWNT defensively. But getting minutes and earning a clean sheet is never a bad thing for a keeper. The USWNT have a bit of a break before the next group of friendlies, so we’ll see if Emma brings another new keeper into the mix, as she did with this camp.

JS: Tullis-Joyce is the starter at the moment, but we haven't learned much her. Rarely tested across both matches, she's yet to have a real challenge on the international stage. However, Hayes seems to trust her – which is not something to be taken granted.

Getty ImagesWere these two victories meaningful?

RT: Not particularly. The USWNT plays some of the sport's heavy-hitters throughout a calendar year – and these two teams were not that. Was this productive? Yes. Will players have learned some lessons? Sure. But are these two games that, ultimately, will have any impact? Not really, at least on a team level, particularly in comparison to the last window's battles with Brazil.

CB: Yes and no. Near-term, no. But in the big picture? Yes. Nearly every game the USWNT plays matters. While the result may not move any kind of needle or alter global standings, it’s all part of fitting into the larger vision that Hayes has for this team. No one likes to win more than Emma, so to say the results don’t mean anything will never be true. However, now is the time for her to experiment, for things to not necessarily be perfect. That's how players learn, and it gives Hayes time to correct.

JS: It's progress for the team from the perspective of growth and unity. This is a new-look core compared to last summer. Sure, there are a few familiar faces, but this group is relatively young – the starting XI against Jamaica had the fewest combined caps of any USWNT in the past 24 years – and is still learning and uniting. So in that respect, yes, the results matter.

Worth way more than Dibling: Spurs hit gold on "frightening" Ange signing

This summer has to be a massive one for Tottenham Hotspur.

Ange Postecoglou’s side have seriously struggled this season through a combination of poor form and a torrent of injuries, so much so that they’ve lost more games than they’ve won in the Premier League.

However, as there were at the start of last season, there have been signs that the Australian could make things work with more backing, and based on reports from the last few weeks, Daniel Levy and Co appear to be looking to make signings in the coming months.

One of the players most heavily touted for a move to N17 has been Southampton gem Tyler Dibling, although if he did join the Lilywhites, he’d be worth considerably less than one of his main rivals for game time.

Why Spurs want to sign Dibling

While Spurs’ interest in Dibling is now in the open, the North Londoners are not the only club keen to secure the youngster’s services, with fellow Premier League outfit Newcastle United also said to be interested.

So, why are a number of the league’s biggest clubs circling a winger from a club who look destined to be relegated to the Championship?

Well, simply put, he has been one of the very few bright spots for Southampton this year, and while he hasn’t necessarily lit the world alight, he’s done enough to suggest that his ceiling is extraordinarily high.

For example, despite being just 19 years old and playing for a genuinely awful Saints side, the Exeter-born “game-breaker,” as dubbed by analyst Ben Mattinson, has scored four goals and provided two assists in 30 appearances, which is not bad going for his debut season in the top flight.

Moreover, while his primary and best position is off the right, the young Englishman has also shown himself to be a versatile attacker, making five appearances as a centre-forward this season, five in attacking midfield, and one in right midfield.

Finally, over the last year or so, Tottenham have clearly chosen to target up-and-coming talents in the transfer market, with moves for Lucas Bergvall, Archie Gray, and Wilson Odobert.

So, in their case, signing Dibling would also fit nicely with their long-term vision for the team, and it seems more than likely that his €25m valuation from Transfermarkt, which is about £21m, will start increasing very soon.

That said, if Levy and Co can bring the youngster to North London in the summer, he’ll have to work hard to match the valuation of his biggest competitor for game time.

The Spurs star worth millions more than Dibling

Now, when it comes to the winger options at Spurs, Postecoglou has a few players who can choose from on the left, but when it comes to the right, the only truly natural option he currently has is Brennan Johnson.

The Welsh international joined the North Londoners from Nottingham Forest in the summer of 2023, and while things haven’t necessarily been plane sailing since then, he has established himself as a useful attacking outlet.

For example, despite enduring a slow start to his first campaign in the capital, the 23-year-old scored five goals and provided ten assists in 34 appearances, totalling 2248 minutes. This comes out to an average of a goal involvement every 2.26 games or every 149.86 minutes.

This season has been even better, as in 39 appearances, totalling 2493 minutes, the “frightening” ace, as dubbed by content creator HLTCO, has scored 14 goals and provided four assists, which comes out to an average of a goal involvement every 2.16 games, or every 138.5 minutes.

Impressively, despite getting so much stick earlier in the season that he deactivated his Instagram account, the Welshman is currently the club’s top goalscorer.

So, when you take all that into consideration, it’s not massively surprising that Transfermarkt values him at €50m, which is about £42m, or £22m more than Dibling is currently worth.

Ultimately, if the Spurs do sign the young Saints star, then they’ll have yet another promising prospect in their squad. However, seeing if he can take Johnson’s spot from him in the long run will be interesting.
