Arsenal are readying a bid to sign one of EURO 2024's surprise performers ahead of the new Premier League season, it has been reported.
Arsenal transfer news
Mikel Arteta's side have signed just one outfield player so far this summer, with Riccardo Calafiori arriving from Bologna in a deal worth up to £42m including add-ons. He became the club's fourth summer signing after the arrivals of youth goalkeepers Tommy Setford and Lucas Nygaard, while they have also confirmed the permanent arrival of last season's golden glove winner David Raya following his loan spell in north London.
With three weeks left of the transfer window, the Gunners are expected to be busy as they look to eclipse Manchester City at the third time of asking, having finished as runners up to Pep Guardiola's side in each of the last two seasons.

One man who is seemingly bound for the Emirates Stadium is Spanish midfielder and EURO 2024 winner Mikel Merino, with an agreement reportedly having been reached with the player and Fabrizio Romano adding that discussions are taking place over a deal with a fee of around 30m euros (£25m) for the former Newcastle and Borussia Dortmund man.
There are still issues in the Gunners frontline that will need addressing though, with at least one forward expected to be added between now and August 30th's transfer deadline and Reiss Nelson likely to depart the club should an offer arrive. Now, the Gunners are reportedly accelerating talks to sign another in-demand star from EURO 2024.
Gunners preparing offer for Turkish star
That comes with Arteta's side pushing on with a deal to sign Turkish winger Barış Alper Yılmaz this summer. The Galatasaray man impressed in this summers European Championships despite his side being knocked out in the quarter finals of the competition, and even drew high praise from Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk.
"Baris Alper Yilmaz was running constantly. He was running elusive. It was difficult for every defender. He made it very hard for us. He couldn't score a goal though. If we were to describe him in any way, he is a really important player," the Liverpool centre back explained after the game.

His performances caught the eye of a whole host of clubs but it is Arsenal who are looking to seal a deal, according to reports in Turkey, relayed by Sports Witness. They claim that Arsenal are readying a 20m euro (£17m) bid for the 24-year-old after having "accelerated transfer talks", with his agent having recently flown to England to hold talks with Premier League sides.

Yilmaz still has three years left to run on his £13,000 a week deal in Turkey, and it had previously been reported that Gala would hold out for 30m euros to part ways with him, but this report suggests that 20m euros will be enough to secure his services, though other Premier League interest is expected to challenge Arsenal for his signature.
The 21-year old smashes 29-ball 71 in shortened game before Todd Astle wraps up victory with 4 for 13

The 21-year-old, all of three T20Is young, made the joint second-fastest T20I fifty by a New Zealander in a 10-overs-a-side contest at Eden Park to help New Zealand hammer 141 for 4. This was 65 too many for Bangladesh, who ended their tour with six straight losses. The rainFor over two hours, intermittent rain kept a thin but boisterous crowd on tenterhooks. When rain finally abated to give way to some cricket, Liton Das, leading in place of the injured Mahmudullah, elected to bowl. But soon enough, all that glee at getting to do what he wanted, disappeared as Allen and Martin Guptill bristled their way to an 85-run opening stand in just 5.4 overs.Guptill sets the tone, Allen followsGuptill scored each of the 23 runs New Zealand made in the first two overs, which also consisted of six dot balls. Swinging cleanly to pepper the arc between cow corner and long-off, he did all the early running. Allen, who faced just one delivery in this phase, opened the scoring with an audacious reverse sweep for four off left-arm spinner Nasum Ahmed.

That reverse sweep was followed by a muscular hoick over midwicket for back-to-back boundaries. This much was clear. He had no fear, neither was he unfazed at two relatively low scores in his first two outings. If the ball was there to be hit, he was going after them. This forced the bowlers to also alter their lengths and in doing so, they erred and Allen made merry. What Allen did wellAllen has a still head and incredible hand speed in finding his desired areas. If the bowler went length, he backed away to muscle it away or slap it over the infield. When they went full, he cleared his front leg to clear the sight screen. If they tried to bang it in, he flat-batted them. If they went full and wide, he got down on one knee to scythe this away. If they tried a leg-stump yorker and missed, he was ready to scoop them fearlessly over short fine.It was almost as if the bowlers had no answers to Allen’s pyrotechnics. The reward in the end, a maiden T20 fifty and plenty of chatter on social media about what he could potentially achieve at his upcoming IPL stint with Royal Challengers Bangalore, where he’d team up with Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers. All this as Guptill also found his own hitting range in making 44 off 18 before holing out to sweeper cover.Todd Astle had a memorable return to the New Zealand side•Getty ImagesFielding lets Bangladesh downNot for the first time on tour, Bangladesh’s fielding was a disappointment. At Eden Park, where the boundaries are slightly odd-shaped because it’s also a Rugby ground, Bangladesh’s struggled with their angles, grassing as many as four catches and bailing out of one completely.Allen was put down twice in the fourth over. First, Rubel Hossain put down a tough chance running back from mid-off. Then, Soumya Sarkar failed to get around from mid-on to grab a steepler. Then in the seventh over, Soumya put Allen down again on 51 when he did all the hard work in running in from long-off and then putting in a full-length dive – doing most things right – before grassing the ball off his fingertips. Then in the penultimate over, Shoriful Islam bailed out of a catch to once again reprieve Allen for the fourth time in the night, but by then the damage had been done. But there was some silver lining in Shoriful’s bowling efforts. Hitting the hard lengths with his left-arm pace and mixing it up with the wide yorkers, his two overs went for just 21 for the wicket of Glenn Phillips as he looked to accelerate towards the end. In a game where New Zealand went at 14 an over, this was commendable.Southee, Astle inflict maximum damageSoumya was done in for pace as he lobbed a return catch to Southee off an inside edge in the very first over. Off the next delivery, Das walked across to paddle, only to see his middle stump flattened by a full and furiously straight delivery. Opener Mohammad Naim muscled his way to two sixes, but the entertainment was all too brief, as he was one of four victims of legspinner Todd Astle, who was playing his first game of the season. One of those wickets, to dismiss Afif Hossain, was particularly impressive. Imparting plenty of revs on a wrong’ un that he landed on a length to get bounce – almost Rashid Khan-like, he beat a swinging Afif Hossain’s slog sweep with part-time wicketkeeper Devon Conway effecting a smart stumping. He finished with figures of 4 for 13. Southee then returned to take another, although he missed his hat-trick in doing so. It wasn’t a batting performance Bangladesh would want to remember.

United were beaten 3-2 by Nottingham Forest on Saturday as Amorim sustained his second successive Premier League defeat, having also been beaten by Arsenal in midweek. The Portuguese has now been in charge for five games and has made multiple changes to his starting XI for each fixture, something that has irritated Neville.

United are currently 13th in the Premier League and Neville has urged Amorim to follow the example of Enzo Maresca, who has guided Chelsea to second-place since taking the role at Stamford Bridge. Neville has also claimed that his erratic team selections suggest that Amorim does not trust his squad.
WHAT NEVILLE SAID
Neville told : "When you keep changing players and you keep changing your back three and you take five players off, you're basically saying to all of them, because they've obviously been taken off at the start of the game, that you don't trust them.
"Ten Hag kept doing that a few weeks ago when he kept changing the back players, changing the midfield. All of a sudden you've got a completely different system, a completely different set of players on the pitch at the end of the game. You can never get consistency.
"It looked really scruffy. They looked a mess at the end United with no real shape. In the first half they weren't brilliant but at least they had a shape to them.Â
"Pick an XI that you think are the best. Almost give that XI the faith and trust. Maresca's doing it now at Chelsea – he's playing an XI on a Sunday or a Saturday and then he's playing a different XI in midweek.Â
"He's sending some messages to the players that there's stability here and this is what we're going to do. When you change players all the time you're just spinning plates and there's no consistency. You need to build patterns together. You need to build that idea of what you are doing together."

Luke Procter puts up a fight for Northamptonshire against former side on compelling last day
Paul Edwards18-Apr-2021 The blackthorn is in flower and the chiffchaffs will arrive soon. The County Championship season has begun with some fine games and few can have been more engrossing than the one that concluded at Emirates Old Trafford this evening. All the same, when folk arrived at the ground on a sunlit morning some rather desultory chat centred on how many sanitiser breaks Northamptonshire’s remaining seven wickets would survive before Lancashire sealed their first victory of the season. The all too easy assumption was that either Saqib Mahmood would blast the visitors out or Matt Parkinson would twirl them back to Wantage Road. Adam Rossington’s cricketers adore such blithe expectation; it gives them the chance to trample on it.As things turned out, after nearly a full day of compelling cricket Lancashire did win this game but only with 13.3 overs left in the contest. Parkinson’s leg spinner was, so the umpire Mike Burns decided, edged onto his pad by Luke Procter and caught by the batsman’s old mucker, Steven Croft at backward short leg. Procter is a phlegmatic sort of bloke but he looked aghast. He had batted 371 minutes for 93 runs and there were times in the day when it seemed he would guide Northants to a draw against the side he had represented with limitless pride for many years. Anyone thinking of mentioning to Procter that he had played a noble part in a wonderful day’s cricket should probably wait a few weeks before doing so. On second thoughts, make it a few months. It was neither Parkinson nor Mahmood who had made the vital late breakthroughs just before the last hour commenced. That honour fell to Luke Wood, who had Nathan Buck caught down the leg side by Alex Davies after the former Lancashire seamer had shared in an eighth-wicket stand with Procter that had sucked up 18 overs. With the final hour plus eight overs left in this rich game and three wickets in hand, some in the Northants dressing-room may have been wondering if an escape was possible. Instead, Wood followed his removal of Buck by yorking Simon Kerrigan first ball. After that it really did seem a matter of time; not that anyone told Procter.Suddenly it was very much more than half a day since Northants had lost three wickets in ten overs of the first session. At that point the visitors’ frailties looked likely to send us all home quite early. The reverse sweep will never be pleasing on the eye but rarely can it have appeared quite such a misbegotten thing as when Ricardo Vasconcelos attempted to play it off Parkinson’s second ball of the morning. The Northants opener left all his stumps exposed, missed the ball and was bowled off his boot. Nought for technical merit and less than that for artistic impression. Three overs later Rossington pushed all too loosely at Wood and nicked a catch to Keaton Jennings at first slip.Related

'Sack it, I'm going to try and rip it' – Matt Parkinson on his ball-of-the-century contender
Saif Zaib’s dismissal by Parkinson was more controversial. Burns’ judgment that the batsman was playing no shot was fair enough; Zaib’s jab down looked an afterthought. It was surely stretching it, though, to argue the ball would have hit the stumps and one wondered whether the leg spinner’s Warnesque dismissal of Rossington on Friday evening coloured the judgement. Probably not. Burns took a while to make the decision and the old sweats told us all to look in the book. (Slight yawn, to be honest. Even Zaib knew he was .)That, though, was the last success Lancashire were to enjoy for nearly 37 overs. Encouraged by Procter, Tom Taylor played very straight and took what luck was available for a minute short of two hours. So secure was Taylor’s defence that his dismissal seemed to surprise his opponents as much as everyone else. But then he was stumped off the 92nd ball bowled in first-class cricket by Rob Jones, a leg spinner whose enthusiasm is inversely proportionate to his success. It should also be noted that Jones’ wicket in his only over – and his second success in the Championship following that of Tom Fell – was perfectly timed. Ten balls later the new ball became due and we readied ourselves for some last rites. Procter, in sharpest contrast, did not. He continued to resist, this time in company with Buck, whose first dozen balls brought him 13 runs, the same number Taylor had scored off 115. Four slips were posted for Mahmood and we awaited a collapse that turned out to be as quick to arrive as Billy Bunter’s postal order or the result of a public inquiry. Instead of a rapid subsidence Northamptonshire’s batsmen relaxed into obduracy. Lancashire’s cricketers became nervy, their appeals more hopeful. The new ball lost its initial shine and Vilas called up Wood, who never wants for enthusiasm. If contests like this lie in wait for us over the next five months we shall be blessed indeed. “At last a day of real warmth, the path through the hanger wood sunlit and dry,” wrote John T White in his Country Diary piece for in April 1983. “A time for just standing and staring and it was my good fortune that I did so.” Our good fortune, this afternoon, too. It seems we are to have another benevolent Spring and we needed one.Leg spinners like Parkinson will enjoy that and so will their colleagues across the land. Most cricketers are born to the open air and to the lengthening days of summer. Even an indoor net confines them outrageously. This is the time of Dennis Potter’s blossomest blossom.
Arsenal, having just made it two wins from two in a tough victory against Aston Villa, could yet turn their attention straight back to the transfer market after holding talks to sign a Premier League winner.
Arsenal transfer news
With Riccardo Calafiori already settling in and Mikel Merino on his way, Arsenal have focused on adding quality to their squad this summer rather than welcoming excessive incomings. Merino will come in and likely take Thomas Partey's place in Mikel Arteta's starting line-up, even after the midfielder scored his side's second at Villa Park this weekend.
The change that brought Arsenal to life against Aston Villa was the introduction of Leandro Trossard. The former Brighton & Hove Albion winger came from the bench in the 65th minute and opened the scoring in the 67th, making the impact that Gabriel Martinelli failed to do in the first hour of proceedings.
Whilst that left-wing spot remains in question too, the Gunners could turn to the transfer window and experience to answer those questions at long last. According to Graeme Bailey for HITC, Arsenal have held talks to sign Raheem Sterling after his camp made contact with the North London giants alongside the likes of Aston Villa and West Ham United.
Arsenal inform club they're about to bid £20m+ to sign "gifted" gem
He’s one for the future…
ByTom Cunningham Aug 25, 2024
Offering the Gunners the chance to reunite Sterling and Arteta for the first time since their spell together at Manchester City, which was full of success, Arsenal could yet end their summer with a bang.
Amid the speculation, Arteta recently spoke about his previous work with Sterling, saying via Sky Sports: "My time with Raheem was exceptional. We built a really strong relationship together. He was unbelievable at that time.
"He taught me a lot as well, about individuals, how the players think, how we help them and support them. He is someone I have really strong feelings about."
"Unbelievable" Sterling could increase Martinelli questions
It's arguably reaching a point with Martinelli where a blip is turning into serious question marks over whether he should be Arteta's starting winger on the left-hand side, especially with Trossard pushing the Brazilian all the way from the bench. And the arrival of an experienced option in Sterling would only add to those question marks.

One of the driving forces behind Manchester City's dominance over the years, Sterling has since been cast aside at Chelsea. But Arsenal could yet come swooping in, even with his reported £325,000-a-week salary.
His output levels in a poor Chelsea side were better than Martinelli's in an Arsenal side firing on all cylinders last season. The Premier League has seen what the England international can do with quality around him and it usually results in silverware. Now, in the final five days of the window, Arsenal could take full advantage of his current situation at Stamford Bridge.
The deadline for the summer transfer window officially passed on Friday night and Glasgow Rangers were able to bring in two new additions to Philippe Clement's squad at Ibrox.
Rangers brought in defender Neraysho Kasanwirjo on a season-long loan and secured a permanent deal for attacking midfielder Nedim Bajrami, who was playing for Sassuolo in Italy.
The Light Blues ended the summer transfer window with 11 signings added to the group, including Jefte, Liam Kelly, Mohammed Diomande, Oscar Cortes, Clinton Nsiala, Connor Barron, Vaclav Cerny, Hamza Igamane, and Robin Propper joining alongside Kasanwirjo and Bajrami.
Clement's array of fresh recruits, barring Bajrami who was unavailable, were unable to get the job done against fierce rivals Celtic in the first Old Firm clash of the season on Sunday.
The Light Blues were comfortably beaten at Parkhead in a 3-0 defeat, thanks to goals from Daizen Maeda and Kyogo Furuhashi in the first half and a strike from Callum McGregor in the second 45.
It was a disappointing afternoon for the Glasgow giants and a timely reminder of how much work there is to do for Rangers to be in contention to win the Scottish Premiership title, which was not helped by their failure to sign a winger on deadline day.
Rangers failed to land Premier League forward
It was reported by Fabrizio Romano just after 10 pm on deadline day that the Gers were in 'advanced talks' to secure a deal for Southampton winger Sam Edozie.
However, the deadline passed and Rangers did not announce the signing of the talented young flanker, which meant that they failed to get a move over the line in the end.
Former Manchester City winger Samuel Edozie.
It was then reported by The Sun that Edozie was unable to land a loan because of the Premier League side's demands. They wanted a £1m loan fee as well as wanting the team taking him to pay all of his £30k-per-week wages.
That meant that Rangers ended the window without bringing in the extra left winger that they seemingly wanted, as the 21-year-old ace is a right-footed forward who typically operates off the left – cutting inside onto his favoured foot.
Edozie has only made two appearances as a substitute in the Premier League for the Saints this season, but did contribute to their Championship promotion last term.

As you can see in the table above, the English wizard was directly involved in nine goals in 32 outings in the second tier as Southampton went up via the play-offs.
Clement and Koppen seemingly saw something in him that they liked, as they reportedly wanted to add him to the squad on deadline day, but a deal could not be ironed out in the end, possibly due to Southampton's huge demands.
How Rangers can forget about Sam Edozie
The Rangers manager was recently asked if he would be open to looking at the pool of free agent players to bolster his squad and confirmed that it is a "possibility", which suggests that the club are prepared to explore that route.
Of course, the summer transfer window officially slammed shut last week and that means that the Gers cannot go and sign players, permanently or on loan, from other clubs until January.
However, they can swoop to bring in free agents, who are not currently contracted to any club, to bolster their options if they decide that they do not want to wait over three months to make further additions.
The Gers could, now, assess their options in the market and see if any of the available players would bring the required quality to Ibrox to improve the squad.
Following the failure to sign Edozie on loan from Southampton in the final minutes of the window, it appears as though a left winger would be a welcome addition to the club.
With this in mind, there is one name that stands out on the current list of free agents as a potentially brilliant coup for the Light Blues if they can convince him to move to Scotland – Sofiane Boufal.
Why Rangers should sign Sofiane Boufal
Rangers should swoop to sign the Morocco international in the coming days or weeks as he has the quality to make Clement and Koppen forget all about Edozie.
The 30-year-old forward was recently with Qatar-based outfit Al-Rayyan SC but endured an injury-hit 2023/24 campaign before being released this summer.
Boufal missed a whopping 35 matches through injury and that restricted him to making just 16 appearances for the club, in which time the winger produced four goals and two assists.
This means that it would be a risky move by Rangers, due to his injury issues, but there is a reason these players are free agents and there will be an element of risk with any signing from that pool of players.
Prior to his injury-hit spell in Qatar, the left winger caught the eye with his impressive performances on the flank for Angers in the French top-flight.

As you can see in the table above, Boufal produced 12 goals and created 14 'big chances' in two Ligue 1 seasons, whilst creating around two chances per game on average.
The forward would also arrive at Ibrox with Premier League experience under his belt, having racked up four goals and three assists in 70 games for Southampton earlier in his career.
During his time with the Saints, Boufal scored their 'goal of the decade' with an amazing solo run and finish against West Bromwich Albion, as shown in the clip below.
The 30-year-old star, who was once hailed as "unbelievable" by former teammate Nathan Redmond, is capable of incredible quality on his day, which is also backed up by his superb contributions in Ligue 1 during the 2021/22 and 2022/23 campaigns.
Therefore, Rangers could forget about Edozie by taking a gamble on this free agent in the hope that he can recapture his form from his time in France after his injury troubles in Qatar.

Nunez has come under scrutiny this season after managing just three goals for Liverpool in all competitions from 19 appearances. There have been questions raised over whether his style of play suits Liverpool's system and his lack of goals this season is likely to lead to further speculation over his position at the club and whether the Reds may look to offload him at the end of the current campaign.
