Payments to counties count as Hundred losses, says Surrey chief executive

County pre-season sales suggest new competition would not have attracted new audience in London

Andrew Miller07-May-2020Richard Gould, Surrey’s chief executive, has cast further doubt on the ECB’s claim that the inaugural season of the Hundred would have proved profitable, had it not been postponed until 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.Gould – whose county voted against the creation of the new competition when it was first mooted in 2016 – also suggested that the Hundred would have failed to attract a new audience to the Kia Oval, a claim backed up by pre-season ticket sales data seen by ESPNcricinfo. On Tuesday, Tom Harrison, the ECB chief executive, told a Department of Culture, Media and Sport select committee hearing that the Hundred had been on course to deliver an £11 million profit in its first season, with a projected revenue of £51 million against costs of £40 million. However, that figure becomes a loss of £12 million once payments of £1.3 million to each of the 18 first-class counties and MCC are taken into account – a total outlay of £24.7 million that was promised to the clubs in return for their support in re-writing the ECB constitution and paving the way for the creation of the new competition. And speaking to Sky Sports, Gould insisted that the true cost of the Hundred could not be seen without accepting those figures belong in the competition’s P&L.

“I wouldn’t say that the competition is profitable at this point, because the money that was being paid to the counties was there to do a job,” Gould said. “It was to allow a six-week window to be created in the middle of the season, and to offset the cost of doing so.”I don’t want to get into an argument with the ECB directly, but I think those costs should be included within the calculations. And that would then allow you to understand the absolute net position.”Surrey’s opposition to the Hundred has softened since the details of the competition were finalised last season, including the retention of some of the county’s identity in the naming of the South London-based franchise, Oval Invincibles.ALSO READ: Harrison denies Hundred gamble as ECB face £380 million lossHowever, Gould remained sceptical that, in London at least, the competition would manage to tap into any demographics that had not already been drawn to the Kia Oval to watch Surrey in action in the T20 Blast.Comparative year-on-year figures for Surrey’s pre-season sales up to February 28, shortly before the Covid-19 outbreak, show that the club’s overall number of ticket transactions had dipped below 20,000 for the first time in four years.

And while the number of junior tickets was slightly higher than in previous years, the club’s demographic breakdown suggested it was the Blast, not the Hundred, which had attracted more Under-45s and female fans in the pre-season window.”This is where Surrey has always been slightly different in some areas,” said Gould. “Many other counties have had success in T20 but certainly the new audience, defined in terms of age and gender that the ECB is after through the Hundred, has been delivered through the Blast at the Kia Oval for the last 3-4 years. There’s no doubt about that.”Nationally, however, the ECB believe that they had been on track to attract a new audience, with 17% of their ticket sales for the Hundred having been to Under-16s, compared to an overall figure of 9% in 2019, notwithstanding the attraction of the World Cup.ALSO READ: Explainer: Will the Hundred make a profit? This figure compared favourably with the Blast (13%) and, especially, Test cricket, where just 3% of tickets are sold to Under-16s. And given that the tickets had not yet been on general sale, and that the BBC had been due to launch a major marketing campaign in May, an ECB spokesperson stated that they had been “comfortable” with the position so far.”I suppose one of the good things about the Hundred is that it provides more opportunities and more games for those people to return to watch that [competition] as well,” added Gould.”But when you look at the level of sales that have been delivered in the Blast, you can see the whole of cricket was moving into an extremely ebullient summer, following the huge success of last year. There’s an added frustration that, having delivered such a bow wave through both international cricket and domestic cricket, that bow wave has now hit the beach unfortunately.”

Daryl Harper 'extremely proud' of much-debated Sachin Tendulkar lbw decision

“I considered the action before me and applied the law without fear or favour”

ESPNcricinfo staff22-Jul-2020Former ICC umpire Daryl Harper has said he is “extremely proud” of his controversial ‘shoulder-before-wicket’ decision which had Sachin Tendulkar walk back for a duck at the Adelaide Oval in 1999 despite the backlash he received back then. Tendulkar was given out lbw by Harper after he ducked into a Glenn McGrath delivery during the second innings of the Test, which India went on to lose.”I look back on that ‘Tenducker’ decision every day of my life,” Harper told . “It’s not that I sleep badly or have nightmares and replays dancing through my brain. When I walk through my garage, I am confronted by a huge canvas print of Sachin and Glenn McGrath, taken momentarily after the ball made contact.ALSO READ: My ‘mistake’ in 2008 Sydney Test ‘might have cost India the game’ – Bucknor”You may be disappointed to know that I’m still extremely proud of that decision because I considered the action before me and applied the law without fear or favour.”Harper was at centre of controversy again in 2011 after he was criticised for a series of umpiring errors during India’s tour of West Indies. During the first Test in Jamaica, Harper had suspended Praveen Kumar from the attack for repeatedly running on the pitch, to which the then-captain MS Dhoni allegedly reacted by saying, “we’ve had problems with you before, Daryl.” Dhoni also publicly remarked about the umpiring at the post-match press conference.

I didn’t have a clean sheet and that always disappointed me when it happened, but my decision-making statistics in Tests with India were second to none at the time

Harper retired from umpiring after that match, two weeks before his contract was due to expire, and had later questioned ICC’s decision to not punish Dhoni for his comments, saying he had felt targeted by the Indian team during the game.”After the Test was won by India, MS [Dhoni] was reported to have said to the media assembled that the players would have been back in their hotel rooms earlier if the umpires had made the correct decisions,” Harper said, recalling the incident. “It’s true… but they would have been back earlier if the Indian fieldsmen had taken their catches as well. Sometimes I wished I could have attended those post-match press conferences on a regular basis in order to set the record straight.””It did turn out to be my final Test, but my contract was due to expire two weeks later after the third Test in Dominica so the end was close, regardless of any comments by MS Dhoni or anyone else.”I accepted that I had made two incorrect decisions during the match and some other moments could not be determined with the available technology. I didn’t have a clean sheet and that always disappointed me when it happened, but my decision-making statistics in Tests with India were second to none at the time.”

Aston Villa hit gold on "deadly" ace who’s worth as much as Ronald Araujo

The 2023/24 season has been an incredibly successful time for Aston Villa. Unai Emery’s side achieved their goal of Champions League qualification, securing fourth place ahead of Tottenham Hotspur by two points.

The basis for that was set by Aston Villa’s impressive summer transfer window in 2023 and was spurred on with the addition of Morgan Rogers in January. The Villans spent £97m last summer, according to Sky Sports, with nine teams spending more.

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery

The signing of Youri Tielemans from Leicester City on a free transfer was an astute piece of business for Villa to conduct. The Belgian took his time to bed in at Villa Park but soon became a key player under Unai Emery.

Not only that, they brought Emery’s former defender at Villarreal, Pau Torres, into the club from the Spanish outfit. The left-footed centre-back became integral to Emery’s system at Villa and cost an initial £33m.

The addition of Nicolo Zaniolo on loan from Galatasary was a smart piece of business, as was the signing of Rogers from Middlesbrough in January, who took to the Premier League like a duck to water. He cost the Villans up to £16m.

Aston Villa's Morgan Rogers celebrates

However, there was one other summer signing, who could well have proven to be Villa’s best in the summer of 2023.

Moussa Diaby’s stats in 2023/24

The man in question here is French winger Moussa Diaby. He joined Villa last July from Bayer Leverkusen, who won the Bundesliga in remarkable fashion this season, going invincible all campaign.

Villa paid £51.9m to bring Diaby to Villa Park, a deal which smashed the club-record transfer. The previous club-record deal was that of Emiliano Budenia, who signed for Villa for a fee of £38m move from Norwich City in June 2021.

Moussa Diaby

Since moving to England, Diaby has gone from strength to strength under Emery. The Frenchman scored ten goals and registered nine assists in all competitions this season, with 14 of those 19 goal involvements coming in the Premier League.

Indeed, Diaby reunited with his former Leverkusen teammate Leon Bailey this summer when he joined the Villans. The pair played together 51 times for the German side, and have since extended that tally to 84, having now combined for 11 goals, including three for Villa.

That will no doubt have been a duo Villa fans were excited to see in action for their side this season. It was a pair that was previously described by Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig as “deadly”, following their 51 combined goals and assists in 2020/21.

Diaby’s market value in 2024

Given his excellent form this season, it may come as little surprise that Diaby’s transfer value has risen greatly. In fact, Diaby is now valued higher than any of his Villa teammates, with only Douglas Luiz as high as him.

Indeed, the 24-year-old is valued at £68m according to CIES Football Observatory, more than the likes of Ollie Watkins, who is worth £51m after a stellar season, and Bailey, who is valued at £42.5m.

Interestingly, Diaby’s value is the same as one of Villa’s primary summer targets, if the rumours are to be believed.

According to reports in Spain, Villa’s manager Emery, and Sporting Director Monchi were in Spain recently to watch Ronald Araujo of Barcelona.

This comes alongside the rumour that “they were interested in the Uruguayan footballer's situation and noted their desire to present a formal transfer proposal”, and now they have secured Champions League football, is a move they could make, according to the report.

This would be a costly deal and would cost tens of millions of pounds. Araujo is valued at £68m by CIES, just as Diaby is. It could well be a transfer that shatters the transfer record they set when buying the Frenchman last summer if it goes through.

Barcelona defenderRonald Araujo.

Regardless, the deal to sign Diaby has proven to be a successful one. He has an impressive amount of goal involvements and has seen a spike in his transfer value which would offer good profit to Villa should they hypothetically decide to sell him.

It is great business from Emery and Monchi, and they will be hoping to build upon that in the Champions League next season.

Carsley appointed as interim England bossEnjoys winning start with Three LionsIsn't entirely comfortable in role yetWHAT HAPPENED?

Carsley has enjoyed a perfect start to his time as interim England boss by overseeing victories over Ireland and Finland in the Nations League. England have also managed two clean sheets in those games, while Carsley has handed international debuts to Morgan Gibbs-White, Angel Gomes and Noni Madueke.

The two victories have led to calls for Carsley to be handed the job on a permanent basis and begin building a team for the 2026 World Cup. The interim boss has previously enjoyed success with the England Under-21s, winning the European Championship in 2023, but says he's not quite used to life with the senior side yet despite his fine start.

WHAT CARSLEY SAID

He told ITV Sport after the win: "I definitely don't feel comfortable still, I have been out of my comfort zone. Enjoyable but we have to had make sure every single day we are producing high standards. [We were] fortunate to get two good results and about building on that."

The England boss went on to talk about match-winner Harry Kane who won his 100th cap against Finland: "Harry took his goals really well, a big occasion for him. Kids being here, an emotional night, but really happy for Harry. He fully deserves all the plaudits. What I have noticed this week is he is highly motivated to play for England and score goals and to have a centre forward like that, hopefully it continues. We played Trent in a different position, along with Rico, you have seen with Trent an array of passing, an ability to control the game. Not a surprise as we have seen him do it for Liverpool."

The Spaniard has been on the sidelines for over a year after sustaining a serious head injury in a horse-riding accident in May 2023. Rico was discharged from hospital later that summer, but it has been a long road back to full fitness and finding a new club. Now, he's completing a medical at Qatari club Al Gharafa and looks set to join up for a new challenge.

The 31-year-old goalkeeper has a respectable reputation in the European game, having played for top-flight clubs across Europe including PSG, Sevilla, Mallorca and Fulham. However, his recent head injury seriously derailed his career. The move to Qatar represents a fresh start, although there's no denying the Qatari league will be a drop-off in quality from what Rico is used to.

After his accident, Rico fell into a coma for three weeks and was reportedly described as being "half a centimetre" from death. Given the extent of the injury, which kept him in hospital for three months, it's remarkable that Rico is back in the game at all.

Kompany tells Bayern to sign £250k-p/w "top class" Man City man immediately

Vincent Kompany is keen to use his newfound wealth at Bayern Munich to make a move for one of his former side's stars this summer, with the Manchester City icon having identified a defender as a priority signing this summer.

Kompany makes shock switch

After suffering relegation with Burnley in a Premier League season in which his side won just five games, a move to Bayern Munich was not what anyone expected for Vincent Kompany this summer.

The Belgian boss, who was previously at Anderlecht and who helped Burnley out of the Championship last season, has been endorsed by Pep Guardiola but struggled to get results at Turf Moor, leaving his side sliding back into England's second tier just 12 months after leaving it.

That prompted Bayern, who have missed out on a whole host of managers this summer, to come knocking as they look to reverse the Bayer Leverkusen dominance that they suffered this season and that ultimately left them trophyless.

Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane

“I'm looking forward to the challenge of FC Bayern. It's a great honour to be able to work for this club – FC Bayern is an institution in international football", Kompany said when he was unveiled by the Bavarian giants.

Now, he is already getting stuck in and has reportedly identified his priority signings, including one from former club Manchester City.

Man City star on Kompany's radar

That comes in the shape of one time teammate John Stones, who has fallen down the pecking order at the Etihad this season.

Suffering an injury-hit campaign, the Englishman made just 12 Premier League starts and was an unused substitute on a further 11 occasions, a dramatic fall from grace from his starring role in the treble winning campaign the year before.

Though he still has two years left to run on his £250,000 a week deal in Manchester, the Englishman has reportedly been considering his options, and may now have been given a way out.

That is because reports from Spain claim that Kompany has made Stones his "priority" this summer as he looks to leave his mark on Bayern, and he believes that Stones' versatility would make him a "valuable" signing.

The pair know each other well, having played together for several years at the Etihad, and Kompany has been full of praise for his former defensive partner in the past.

"I've always said John is one of the most talented defenders. He's got such a bright future", the Belgian explained in 2019. "He's just a top-class defender. If now he gets to play games things will sort themselves out, no doubt."

With Kim Min-Jae having flattered to deceive at the Allianz Arena, and Dayot Upamecano still error-prone, Bayern have been forced to turn to emergency signing Eric Dier more often than not at the heart of their defence, and though the Englishman has produced some excellent performances, his deficiencies are well known.

Stones would certainly elevate the Bayern backline, though it is unclear whether the club would be willing to pay the fee that City would surely demand for the Englishman this summer.

Erik ten Hag's last stand: Man Utd's bumbling manager must beat Aston Villa to save his job – lose & INEOS will have no choice but to put Dutchman out of his misery

The Dutchman has one last chance to prove he is the right man to lead the Red Devils forward, but another humiliation could await at Villa Park.

It's some sort of minor miracle that Erik ten Hag is still employed by Manchester United.

There have been far, too many points of infamy over the last 12 months of his Old Trafford reign. The Coventry City FA Cup semi-final, the 100th-minute collapse at Chelsea, leading Brentford on minute 96 before being pegged back on minute 98, the Selhurst Park massacre, thrashing after thrashing and humbling after humbling.

It would be difficult for players of Football Manager and EAFC to recreate these ludicrous feats in fictional worlds, let alone allow them to play out in reality.

Every time you think the Red Devils have turned a corner, they lurch back into habits of old. There is no learning from past failures, only the doom to repeat them.

And so United are stuck in a loop. Ten Hag supposedly has one more chance to break that cycle – or else it will surely be his head on the chopping block.

Getty Images Sport'One game to save his job'

United have opened the season with a measly three wins from nine across all competitions, including two from six in the Premier League. Those victories have come against Fulham, newly-promoted Southampton and League One outfit Barnsley – hardly an all-star cast.

Ten Hag's notion that his side can compete with the best in the world on their day has come undone already this term. Both Liverpool and Tottenham have effectively walked into Old Trafford, sat the hosts down and tied them to a chair with duct tape while they ransacked the place. No no, you help yourselves to more goals, chaps.

The Sun now report that Ten Hag has only one more chance to prove he is the man for the job. If his side fail to get a result at Aston Villa on Sunday, then it could be curtains for him.

AdvertisementAFPCompetence vs incompetence

There have been many, many think-pieces calling out Ten Hag for failing to instil an identity upon his United team.

Few have come to recognise that the Red Devils' inability to stay out of their own way who they are.

All of United's major wins and results since the start of last season have come as a result of their baffling tactics somehow swinging back in their favour. When games are purposely chaotic and without control, then sometimes you might just strike it lucky. It isn't a sustainable tactic for a serious football team.

Take their two fixtures against Villa last season, for example. Unai Emery's men, at that point, were a little overeager as they pursued a top-four finish, and twice allowed United to grow into open games, with Ten Hag's men doing the double over the Villans.

If Ten Hag is hoping for a similar game this Sunday, though, he will be sorely mistaken. Villa have managed to mature quickly in recent months and are riding a wave of confidence after beating Bayern Munich in the Champions League earlier this week.

The hostile Villa Park atmosphere has contributed to some of the hosts' most impressive results under Emery, who has issued a rallying cry ahead of this weekend's match.

"On Sunday, we will need the same atmosphere with the supporters at Villa Park like on Wednesday," he said.

"I have no doubt they will be there to help and support us to transmit their energy so we can get three points. Manchester United, it is a very difficult match. The players must be really focused to get a strong structure tactically, defensively and offensively."

Getty Images SportSuperstar Duran could land fatal blow

Labelling Jhon Duran a 'superstar' for his 2024-25 exploits is both under and over-selling him. Sure, it's still only October, but at times he has performed beyond even 'superstar' and instead looked more 'superhuman'.

The Colombian is thriving and feasting so far this season, with six goals – most of them absolute worldies to boot – in nine games.

Samu Omorodion made mincemeat of United's defenders on Thursday night, and the almost too-obvious outcome this Sunday is for Duran to run them similarly ragged.

The scary thing for United is Duran isn't even Villa's first-choice striker, with Ollie Watkins still head honcho. But the 20-year-old's introduction from the bench is inevitable, and boy is he going to be licking his lips at the prospect of tearing through a tired defence.

Getty Images SportLosing the dressing room?

What is already an uphill battle for Ten Hag could become an almighty mutiny if he isn't careful.

He has spent over £600m in three years assembling a team that is firmly his. No longer can he claim that he is adjusting his tactics to suit the need of a squad not totally in his image.

And yet he is running the risk of disillusioning some of his closest allies in the dressing room.

He hooked his new centre-back pairing of Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martinez – both of whom he worked with at Ajax – during Thursday's draw with Porto, while Marcus Rashford came in for criticism post-match.

"I have to watch it back and over the left side, definitely we didn't defend well tonight," Ten Hag said. "Marcus also played a part in this but as I say, it had to do with [Alejandro] Garnacho coming on – and nothing against Rashford."

Meanwhile, after Christian Eriksen claimed FC Twente players wanted it more than United's in last week's 1-1 draw, Harry Maguire blamed the squad's fragile mentality for letting the lead slip at Porto.

"I think it's more the mental issue [conceding twice in quick succession] and it's something we have to overcome. It probably starts with belief," Maguire said.

"When we go 2-0 up and concede, does the belief go a little bit between the boys that we can go on and win the game here? So it's something we need to be aware of."

NSWE lodged a proposal to the Premier League at a recent summit, suggesting that the losses which clubs can make over a rolling three-year period be increased. The current limit is £105 million in that time frame, and Villa wanted more leeway with a new £135 million cap.

However, this initiative was rejected outright at a vote, with 15 rival clubs going against it. Villa are one of a number of clubs who will have to make at least one sale by 30th June to avoid sanctions, according to Sky Sports, despite Unai Emery sealing Champions League qualification and millions in broadcasting revenue as a result.

"I think it’s a blow," said journalist Dan Bardell to Villa News, after their proposal to increase the loss threshold was snubbed.

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery.

"Obviously, the club are trying to push that through and you’d imagine that the difference in the two sums would alleviate Villa’s PSR problems. They’re now potentially going to have to sell someone by 30 June and from what I’m hearing they’re looking to shift someone to comply.

"I don’t think they are alone in that but in a summer where there’s an international tournament, the market is typically slow. It’s a difficult situation for Villa from everything that I’m hearing about it."

Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz continues to attract interest from Arsenal as a potential sale, but Emery will be reluctant to lose such a star player who bagged 10 goals and 10 assists in all competitions last season.

Monchi will also have to work harder to navigate the market in terms of incomings. Cost-effective but quality options are a necessity in this situation, but one astute option could be Inter wing-back Denzel Dumfries.

That is according to Inter Live, which also claims that Aston Villa are ready to formalise a bid for Dumfries amid the ongoing uncertainty over his future at San Siro. The 28-year-old bagged four goals and four assists in 31 Serie A appearances last season as an attack-minded full-back, and there is little doubting he could do very well in the Premier League.

"He is really our very best player at the moment, he’s involved in everything," said Van der Vaart to Dutch broadcaster NOS.

"He has provided seven assists in the last seven games, but it could have been even more. He is always on the move. A really great player. His touches are also good, which was different in the past. He is the ideal full-back."

IPL player reports corrupt approach, BCCI ACU starts investigations
