Ange thinks 19 y/o could usurp Bentancur, Spurs now favourites to sign him

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has personally set his sights on a 19-year-old midfielder who he thinks could challenge Rodrigo Bentancur.

Spurs targeting new midfielders ahead of summer window

The Spurs midfield could look slightly different by the start of next season. While both Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr have become fixtures in Postecoglou's starting elevens over the Australian's debut managerial campaign, the same certainly cannot be said of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

He’s being “courted” by the Lilywhites.

ByEmilio Galantini Apr 11, 2024

The Denmark international has actually played a lot of Premier League minutes, but the vast majority of them have come as a substitute. Hojbjerg has started just six top flight matches over 2023/2024, with reliable media sources like Fabrizio Romano claiming he could leave in search of more game time.

The 28-year-old's contract also expires next year, so Spurs would surely rather sell him for a decent market price now than risk losing him for free. Bentancur is another curious case, as the Uruguayan has impressed overall during his time at N17 but also finds himself on the treatment table more often than not.

Bentancur missed 43 games across 2022/2023, mainly due to an unfortunate ACL tear, and unfortunately for him, he was sidelined again this season with torn ankle ligaments – with that injury resulting in his absence for six matches (Transfermarkt).

Supporters will be hoping that is more or less the end of Bentancur's real unluckiness when it comes to fitness, but in any case, it has been widely reported that Postecoglou's side could look to bolster their midfield options.

Tottenham are believed to hold an interest in Conor Gallagher amid his contract stand-off with Chelsea, while other names like Atalanta's Ederson are on their radar ahead of the summer window. This week, an interesting new name has now been linked.

Ange sets sights on Hugo Larsson for Tottenham

Indeed, it is believed the Lilywhites now hold a real interest in Eintracht Frankfurt midfielder Hugo Larsson.

The 19-year-old has burst on to the scene in Germany this season, starting 20 Bundesliga matches and impressing, which has turned the heads of elite clubs across Europe.

According to Football Transfers, Postecoglou has personally set his sights on Larsson, and the Spurs boss believes he could even challenge Bentancur for a place in the side.

Tottenham's manager is believed to be a real admirer of the Sweden international starlet and has been impressed with his performances, so much so that his side are intensifying their efforts to bring in Larsson as they emerge as the frontrunners for his signature.

No 'official complaint' from Quetta Gladiators over alleged Peshawar Zalmi ball-tampering – PCB

Quetta failed to make a formal complaint against Peshawar within the 48-hour window

Danyal Rasool24-Feb-2020Peshawar Zalmi will have no case to answer for alleged ball-tampering during their game against Quetta Gladiators, after the PCB confirmed that Quetta had failed to formally make a complaint. Quetta captain Sarfaraz Ahmed’s claim they had reported what they perceived as ball-tampering by Peshawar has been refuted by the PCB, who in a press release stated Quetta had not filed the complaint through the “correctly stated procedure”.Following the conclusion of the match between Quetta and Peshawar on Saturday, Sarfaraz said his side believed Peshawar had altered the condition of the ball, and they were taking the matter up with the match referee and the PCB. “As far as ball-tampering is concerned, we have followed the protocols of [the] PCB and submitted our report on the matter,” he said. Team manager Nabeel Hashmi, who was with Sarfaraz at the press conference, appeared to clarify the comment, suggesting a formal complaint had not been made. The procedure to file a formal complaint was never followed though. Quetta wrote their complaint on the match evaluation form, which is not the platform to lodge formal complaints. Instead, the PCB pointed out, “all Reports must be completed on Form “Rep 1″ (or such other form as may be made available for such purpose by the PSL from time to time). All Reports must be signed and dated by the person lodging the Report.”That needed to be done within 48 hours of the conclusion of the game, which Peshawar won by six wickets. With that time having now lapsed, the window of opportunity available to Quetta to make a complaint has closed.”The Pakistan Cricket Board today confirmed match referee Roshan Mahanama has not received an official complaint from Quetta Gladiators against Peshawar Zalmi for changing the condition of the ball…” the PCB media release said. The PCB made clear they will not recognise Sarfaraz’s public comments as an official complaint, and were not happy with the manner in which Quetta had handled the matter.”We are aware that a statement on changing the condition of the ball has been made without providing any concrete evidence or lodging a formal complaint through the correctly stated procedure,” Wasim Khan, the PCB CEO, said.”In this case, this should have been submitted to the match referee by 6pm on Monday, 24 February. Such irresponsible statements without formal follow-up will only effect the integrity of the event and cast doubts on international cricketers, and, as such, I request the players to use caution and show responsibility.”A source at Quetta Gladiators told ESPNcricinfo that they had no intention to formally complain, insisting Sarfaraz’s comments had been misinterpreted. Quetta merely wanted to raise awareness of the issue, and to ask umpires to pay more attention to the ball’s condition, which would explain why they included their remarks on the umpire evaluation form instead of lodging a complaint to the match referee. The PSL resumes in Multan on Wednesday, where Multan Sultans will take on Peshawar. Quetta next play in Rawalpindi against Islamabad United.

Will Man City make late transfer swoop for Erling Haaland cover? Pep Guardiola explains pre-deadline plan after selling World Cup winner Julian Alvarez to Atletico Madrid

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola revealed if the club are planning to buy Erling Haaland's cover before the transfer window closes.

Manchester City parted ways with World Cup and Copa America-winning Argentine forward Julian Alvarez earlier this summer as he moved to Atletico Madrid for a whopping £82million (€95m) transfer fee. With Alvarez's exit from Etihad Stadium, Pep Guardiola currently has only Erling Haaland in the No.9 role.

Haaland has once again got off to a blockbuster start, as he netted a hat-trick in the second match of the 2024-25 Premier League season on Saturday as City thrashed newly promoted Ipswich Town 4-1. However, the question remains regarding what will happen when the Norwegian is not able to take to the field?

WHAT PEP GUARDIOLA SAID

beIN Sports asked Guardiola after the match if the club are planning to buy a striker before the transfer window closes on August 30, to which the manager replied: "Erling cannot play every game. The absence of Oscar Bobb is a big, big blow.

"But Phil (Foden) can play there, close to the box. (James) McAtee can play there, because he’s really good in these spaces, and even Gundo can play there. I don’t know what’s going to happen at the end of the market, but I think we’re going to continue in that way."

Defending champions City, who are looking to land a record-enhancing fifth successive Premier League title, have made a perfect start to the current season – with Haaland leading the way – and will be back in action when facing West Ham next weekend.

Nathan Lyon ponders impact of no crowds for Virat Kohli

With or without a crowd, Australia’s leading spinner is eagerly awaiting the rematch with India

Daniel Brettig14-Apr-2020Australia’s No. 1 spin bowler Nathan Lyon has revealed members of the Test team are becoming increasingly resigned to the likelihood they will make their return to Test cricket in front of empty stadiums next summer, leading them to ponder how India’s captain Virat Kohli will handle an atmosphere devoid of the noise and energy of a crowd to play to.Back in March, the Australia ODI team played one match against New Zealand at a deserted SCG before the visitors flew home amid escalating measures against the coronavirus pandemic. While there is cautious optimism within Cricket Australia about resuming international cricket in time for the home season, there is widespread acceptance that spectators may not be permitted to watch in large groups at grounds for quite some time beyond that. For Lyon, this would likely mean playing the 100th Test of his long and increasingly decorated career at an empty ground – he has currently played 96 matches and claimed 390 wickets, second only to Shane Warne among Australian spin bowlers. Pondering such a scenario recently, Lyon said that he and Mitchell Starc had thought about how Kohli might fare without a crowd to help bring about the combative environments in which he thrives.ALSO READ: Not sure who went ‘easy’ on Virat Kohli for IPL contract – Tim Paine”He’s probably good enough to adapt to any scenario,” Lyon said. “But it’s funny you say that. I was actually talking to Mitch Starc the other day and we actually said that if we are playing with no crowd, it’ll be quite amazing to see Virat trying to rev up the seats. It’s going to be a little bit different. But Virat is a superstar. He’ll be able to adapt to any climate that we’re able to play in.”I’m excited about the prospect of India coming out to Australia, it is up there with the biggest series alongside the Ashes. They’re an absolute powerhouse of the cricket world. Playing in front of crowds or no crowds is out of our control. We’ve got to follow the advice of all the amazing medical people around the world. I haven’t thought about no crowds or massive crowds – it’s just about the opportunity of playing against India again. They had the wood over us last time they came over here but we’re a much stronger side at the moment.”One player Lyon was adamant that Australia needed to reassess their approach to is Cheteshwar Pujara, who has long been the ice to Kohli’s fire and proved the immovable object for the Australian bowling attack in 2018-19. Pujara carved out three centuries in Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney to be the backbone of India’s 2-1 series victory.

“I think Pujara flies under the radar a little bit when you look at the Indian side,” Lyon said. “Obviously you look at Rahane and Virat and these guys. But Pujara is a wall. He’s the new wall I should say. It helps that he played exceptionally well last time out here. He adapted his game. He had a bit of luck which is what you need when you’re playing at the top level.”He obviously played his absolute backside off, which for India was good to see but we’re going to have to make sure that come this summer we have to come with some new plans to combat Pujara. As I said, he flies under the radar a little bit – he definitely won’t he flying under the radar come this summer.”Prior to India, Australia’s scheduled tour of Bangladesh has been postponed as cricket is placed on hold along with the rest of global sport with the World Test Championship – with the final slated for June 2021 – one of the tournaments likely to suffer significant disruption.”Obviously it’s disappointing to not be heading over to Bangladesh. That was going to be a massive challenge for the team,” Lyon said. “It’s a place where I get personally challenged as well, and somewhere I enjoy playing my cricket. Regarding the scheduling, no doubt the ICC and Cricket Australia and all the big bosses will do everything they can to make sure we’re getting back and playing cricket.”I think it’s important that the two best teams over that period compete in the Test Championship final, so obviously I want to be there. I want Australia to be there. I think we’re heading in the right direction, we’ve got a young side but we’re building towards something pretty special I believe. That’s a decision for the big bosses of the ICC and everyone else involved. We’ll just have to wait and see.”Lyon’s own winter was going to include a stint playing county cricket for Hampshire, a move that has also been scuppered by coronavirus. He is hopeful that a future visit to play a northern summer at the Rose Bowl will be arranged.”Pretty disappointing that I wasn’t able to get over to Hampshire and be part of that amazing club over there, play a lot of county cricket and hopefully help them on the way to a championship. But that’s not meant to be,” he said. “Throughout our Ashes build up we spent a lot of time there, which was absolutely brilliant. So there are a lot of goals to go back there. I’ve got a good relationship with the club. They’ve got some unbelievable facilities there to train with and I feel my game could go to a couple of new levels if I was able to spend some time over there during the county season.”

Ratcliffe getting serious: Man Utd step up contacts to sign £35m "monster"

Manchester United have reportedly intensified contacts to sign a "monster" in a £35m transfer, according to a new update.

Man Utd transfer rumours

Sir Jim Ratcliffe is preparing for his first summer transfer window as co-owner at Old Trafford, and all going to plan, will have Omar Berrada as chief executive, Jason Wilcox as technical director and Dan Ashworth as sporting director for the upcoming market.

It remains to be seen who will be in charge of United next season, though, with Erik ten Hag‘s future appearing to be in the balance following heavy rumours of a move for either Thomas Tuchel or Graham Potter this week.

Wilcox and Ashworth are thought to be planning to overhaul the “spine” of the United squad, with big earners Raphael Varane and Casemiro potentially just two of 21 players who could leave Old Trafford this summer. As a result, Everton centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite is seen as the “long-term answer” at Old Trafford and is therefore “top target” for United, with confidence over a potential £60-70m transfer being completed by the end of June.

Meanwhile, Bayer Leverkusen star Jeremie Frimpong has been another heavily linked target. Recently, it has been claimed that the Red Devils are keen to trigger the player’s £35m release clause and were in concrete talks over a deal. Now, a new update has emerged.

Man Utd step up Jeremie Frimpong contacts

According to reports from Germany, relayed by Sport Witness, Man Utd have ‘intensified contact’ to sign Frimpong, however, they aren’t the only side to have increased their efforts to land the full-back.

His £35m release clause is only active until the beginning of Euro 2024, though, so the Red Devils may have to make their move relatively quickly once the domestic season reaches its conclusion.

Bayer Leverkusen star Jeremie Frimpong.

Frimpong, described as a "monster" in the final third by The United Stand's Beth Tucker, has gone from strength to strength with Leverkusen after joining from Celtic back in 2021, helping them to the Bundesliga title this season.

He’s played a key role in their unbeaten campaign in all competitions so far under Xabi Alonso, mainly turning out as a right midfielder, and has earned praise from Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes, who said that the left-back is a "simply incredible footballer, technically great and very intelligent," before adding: "Part of the reason why we dominate games to the extent we do at the moment is to do with him reading situations very quickly and coming forward to create overloads."

Should Frimpong arrive at Old Trafford, he could come straight in as first choice ahead of the likes of Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Diogo Dalot, or provide a versatile option further forward, and it looks as if the Red Devils are working to get a potential early summer deal done.

Sterling completed a season-long loan move to the Emirates Stadium from Chelsea on the deadline day after he was deemed surplus to Blues boss Enzo Maresca's needs. After officially putting pen to paper on a Gunners deal, he watched his new club in action against Brighton on Saturday. On Tuesday, he was handed over his new shirt number, 30.

Sterling was elated to join a club like Arsenal, who in the last two seasons had handed champions Manchester City a run for their money in the Premier League title race. The England international believes Mikel Arteta's side are a 'perfect fit' for him as they complement his hunger for success.

WHAT RAHEEM STERLING SAID

In his first exclusive interview with the club's official website, the 29-year-old said, "I’m buzzing. It’s one where we left it late but it’s one I was hoping for. Looking at everything, I’m just like: ‘this is a perfect fit for me’, and I’m super happy that we got it over the line. It’s a perfect fit for me to be at a football club like this, where you can see that hunger, that desire, year on year, they are pushing and pushing and pushing. That’s exactly how I am as a person.

"Each year you want to get better and do better than the previous year. Hopefully, I can gel really well with the boys and get going. It’s time now to meet the boys, get settled in and hopefully now see some game time and make my mark."

Adelaide to host India for pink-ball Test in December

Australia’s Test season is likely to start at the WACA when they play Afghanistan for the first time in Test cricket

Daniel Brettig and Andrew McGlashan27-May-2020India are set to play their first day-night Test in Australia at the Adelaide Oval and an opening Test at the Gabba in Brisbane, where the hosts have not been beaten since 1988, if the tour gets the green light with Perth having to accept the opportunity to host Afghanistan at the WACA.Cricket Australia is due to confirm its tentative schedule for the 2020-21 season by the end of this week but although venues will be allocated there will be a lot of uncertainty remaining depending on how the Covid-19 situation develops over the next few months. However, the prospect of needing hub venues to host multiple Tests appears to have receded. The India Test series will be scheduled to start on December 3 in Brisbane – where they did not play on their successful 2018-19 visit – before heading to Adelaide for the pink-ball match that has become a traditional part of the Australia season but was absent on India’s previous visit, before the holiday-season Tests in Melbourne and Sydney.Whether there is any chance of crowds being present at matches during the summer will depend on developments at government level regarding mass gatherings. The Test season will be pencilled in to start at the WACA when Australia play Afghanistan for the first time in Test cricket. The association had pushed hard for an India Test at the Optus Stadium where Australia secured their one victory in the 2018-19 season, with matches on the west coast also favourable to the Indian time zone, but they will have to make do with an ODI against them this time.If the Afghanistan Test goes ahead as planned, it will be the first at the WACA in three years. Given the presence of two Test venues in the city, the state association had put themselves forward as a hub venue – along with Adelaide – should the India tour have to be based in a restricted number of cities for bio-security reasons. There remain many moving parts to the schedule, including T20I series against West Indies and India in the early part of the season meant to act as warm-ups for the T20 World Cup which is now expected to be postponed. The ODI series against India, currently set as three matches in January, may expand. There is a chance the team could still travel overseas this year with the possibility of the limited-overs tour of England that was due for July moving to September. If the T20 World Cup is postponed, there are strong suggestions the IPL could take its place, meaning those Australian players with deals would miss part of the domestic season.”It’s not necessarily a new problem; we’ve had the Champions League in that time of the year for probably half a dozen years which has clashed with the domestic schedule here, so I’m sure whatever the solution we’ll sort it out,” Pat Cummins, who has a record US$2.2 million deal with Kolkata Knight Riders, said. “It’s a once-off [the current situation]; it’s unprecedented, so we’ll wait and see. Nothing’s for certain yet.”

Celtic have been rinsed by "lost" midfielder who earns more than Iwata

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers arrived at the club last summer for a second stint in Glasgow after former boss Ange Postecoglou decided to move on.

The Australian head coach enjoyed a terrific two seasons at Parkhead, winning five trophies with the Scottish giants, and did some exceptional work in the transfer market.

He made use of his knowledge of Asian football to recruit the likes of Daizen Maeda and Kyogo Furuhashi, among others, whilst also landing signings such as Jota and Alistair Johnston.

Kyogo Furuhashi

However, one slip-up the now-Tottenham boss made came when he decided to make use of the British market to bring in James McCarthy in the summer of 2021.

How much Celtic paid to sign James McCarthy

The Hoops swooped to sign the central midfielder on a free transfer ahead of the 2021/22 campaign after his contract with Crystal Palace had expired earlier that summer.

Celtic signed Joe Hart and McCarthy on the same day and Postecoglou described both players as "top-class" operators, although only one of them has gone on to prove that to be true.

The former England international shot-stopper has kept 61 clean sheets in 148 appearances for the club in all competitions, and was named in the PFA Scotland Team of the Year last season.

McCarthy, as you can see in the table above, arrived at Parkhead off the back of an unimpressive season in the Premier League with Palace, with unremarkable statistics in and out of possession.

His poor form translated over to his time in Scotland and Celtic have been rinsed by the midfielder since his move to the club in 2021, with his wages going down the drain with little coming back in return.

How much James McCarthy is set to cost in wages

By the end of this season, the Hoops will have paid McCarthy roughly £2.18m in wages – £728k-per-season – on a weekly wage of £14k-per-week.

In that time, the 33-year-old veteran has only made 27 first-team appearances for the Scottish side, and has started just four Scottish Premiership games.

The former Ireland international was described as looking "lost" and not match "fit" by former Celtic man Frank McAvennie in October 2022, and that is reflected in his lack of action on the pitch – with two league outings and zero starts since the start of last season.

Celtic midfielder Tomoki Iwata.

His £14k-per-week is more than Tomoki Iwata (£7.6k-per-week) earns at this moment in time, despite the Japanese midfielder emerging as a key player for Rodgers.

The 27-year-old ace has made 20 appearances for the club in all competitions this term and started nine league matches, which suggests that he is far more integral to the team than McCarthy, who has not played a minute of Premiership action during the current campaign.

Rodgers must now drop 2/10 Celtic star alongside McGregor

The Hoops boss should take the attacker out of the starting lineup against Hearts.

ByDan Emery Apr 29, 2024

Therefore, Celtic have been rinsed by the midfield dud, who has zero goals and zero assists in 12 league games for the club, as he has not contributed much on the pitch to justify the millions sent down the drain on his wages over the last three years.

With one year left on his current contract at Parkhead this summer, the Hoops may want to look to move him on for good to avoid paying him another £728k over the next 12 months.

O’Neil must drop Traore and unleash "fantastic" Wolves sensation

Wolverhampton Wanderers return to Premier League action this afternoon, taking on Crystal Palace at Molineux in what is their final home game of the season.

If the Old Gold win their final two games, they could snatch a top-half finish, yet it could depend on other teams' results whether this happens.

Wolves manager Gary O'Neil celebrates a Premier League win.

Regardless, Gary O’Neil has enjoyed a solid debut campaign in the Midlands as he will be aiming to take six points from six in the next two games, albeit while facing the frustration of having to pick a side without the likes of Pedro Neto and Craig Dawson due to injury.

Could there be a change or two in the starting XI? As several players performed poorly against Manchester City last weekend – including Boubacar Traore.

Why Boubacar Traore could be dropped against Crystal Palace

The promising starlet started the game in the heart of the midfield three, alongside Mario Lemina and Joao Gomes, yet failed to really assert his influence throughout the clash.

Indeed, he may have finished the game with a 92% pass success rate, yet the youngster failed to deliver a key pass or create a big chance when he did have the ball.

Additionally, Traore also lost possession four times, succeeded with just one dribble and was dribbled past once in what was a fairly underwhelming showing.

He was even given a match rating of just 4/10 in 90min for his display, and it looks as though he could drop back to the bench for the clash against Palace today.

Thankfully, O’Neil has the perfect replacement – Tommy Doyle.

Tommy Doyle’s statistics for Wolves this season

The youngster wasn’t in the squad for the 5-1 defeat to City due to being on loan from the Champions, but the Old Gold have made his move permanent ahead of next season, activating the option in his loan contract.

The Englishman has certainly enjoyed a fruitful loan spell in the Midlands, making 30 appearances across all competitions, scoring once during an FA Cup tie against Brentford.

Tommy Doyle

Hailed as “fantastic” alongside Cole Palmer and Liam Delap by talent scout Jacek Kulig in 2021, Doyle failed to really make the grade at City, playing only seven times for the senior side.

A move to Wolves has certainly reinvigorated the midfielder, and he could turn out to be a shrewd investment, especially as they could cash in on him a few years down the line should Doyle utilise his talents.

Among his teammates, Doyle currently ranks seventh for accurate passes per game (32.3) in the top flight, along with ranking third for accurate long balls per game (3.1) and eighth for interceptions per game (0.5), showing his talents off across a range of metrics.

He is still only 22, which means the midfielder will continue to get better and better the more he plays in the Premier League.

City’s loss is Wolves’ gain as the £10k-per-week ace could turn out to be a superb piece of transfer business. The youngster will be well rested ahead of the Palace tie and this could see O’Neil unleash him in the starting XI in place of Traore.

Palace have been in solid form of late, securing a stunning 4-0 win over Manchester United in midweek. If Wolves want all three points, they will have to perform at their very best.

Maresca reveals Jackson will sign new contractDiscusses failed move for Victor OsimhenTrusts Jackson to be the team's main strikerGettyWHAT HAPPENED?

Maresca's start to his Chelsea career has been inconsistent as the Blues have won, drawn and lost one game each in the Premier League. However, Jackson has been performing much better under the Italian, and scored in the 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace on Sunday. After the game, Maresca confirmed that the striker is set to sign a contract extension at Stamford Bridge.

Speaking to the media, Maresca said: "The only thing I know is he's signing a new contract – I don't know how many years.

"I'm very happy. Nicolas is doing a fantastic job with us. He scored again. He had more chances but we're happy with him."

Chelsea were very active in the transfer window and had been looking to sign a striker over the summer. The Blues had been linked heavily with a move for Napoli's Victor Osimhen and Brentford's Ivan Toney. However, they failed to sign either player, with Toney moving to Napoli and Osimhen left in limbo at Napoli. Maresca added: "I had faith, and the club also, even before [in Jackson]. We trust Nicolas. When the transfer window was open, I said he was doing fantastic with us."

When asked about Osimhen's failed deadline day move, Maresca said: "We want players but we wanted a player that we decide. It has to be on our conditions. If a player is not here then it was not.

"We will see in January."
